Description of Work: AVOID THIS CONTRACTOR. Our job was for repairs to fix water damage to dry wall, replace a hardwood floor and water damaged subfloor, replacing insulation in a small portion of the crawlspace, and to replace a front door unit with two side lights. The final job is livable, but far from professional. I just wanted the man and his workers as far away from my house as possible. Practically every thing had to be redone in some fashion. The drywall work was great. I have no complaints about them. The wall was painted by a carpenter who got blue paint on the ceiling and painted the outlet for the cable blue too. The next day, the blue paint was touched up with one coat of ceiling paint but you can still see the blue tinge on the ceiling. The solid hardwood installation was completely unprofessional. The layout of the pieces had multiple instances of "avoid these" joints per the instructions that came with the wood for do it yourselfers. There were many sloppy cuts and huge uneven gaps with strips of wood less than 2 inches wide all the way down both sides of the room. At the garage door and back door the wood was cut so sloppy that white toe round had to be placed to cover the gaps like is used with cut rate laminate flooring jobs. (There is a threshold trim piece that should be used for floating floors). If properly cut, no trim pieces should be needed for a solid hardwood floor at the doors. The flooring workers also left trash in my kitchen, on the fireplace mantel, removed rope caulking from my windows and left wads of it on my back deck steps, and left floor staples and nails all over the deck, in the rug outside the door and on the woodpile. The job also included replacing insulation in the crawl space. We had some batts of R-30 insulation that we gave permission to be used first before getting into the R-19 rolls the contractor brought. The 10.5 inch thick R-30 batts were split into 2 or 3 inch thicknesses and shoved into joists leaving 7 inch gaps between pieces in some places. R-19 insulation, required by code, is at least 6.5 inches thick. When confronted about this improper job, the contractor claimed that this job was done by someone else. I was ready to print the pictures of the water remediation people taking out the insulation and insurance adjuster's pictures of the empty joists. The contractor eventually agreed to correct the insulation job but not without much griping and insisting that his guy didn't do that to the insulation. Upon inspecting the redo, we found that the replacement insulation batts had been cut directly upon the plastic vapor barrier "floor" of the crawl space and left huge slashes in the plastic. The insulation had been installed correctly. The hearth stone took at least 3 times to get it to fit. The contractor insisted on the wood floor being installed first and then the hearthstone despite our wishes for the stone to be done first. The stone was glued directly upon the wood subfloor with construction adhesive. The previous hearth stone was on cement backer board and mortared in place. I wanted to fire the contractor well before this point, but my husband is more willing to give people second chances. The final straw that even got my husband riled was the front door replacement. Everything was a fiasco. I had to drive across town to a showroom that was inconvenient for me but convenient for the contractor. Then the showroom only had a few doors and didn't have any sample of the kind of door or sidelights or glass that was anything like I wanted. The salesperson at the "showroom" was not helpful at all and kept taking away the catalog when I tried to look at it and did not know the product at all. The whole trip was a huge waste of my time. I ended up going online and finding a door I liked, still not knowing what the glass looked like. I sent my contractor a direct link to the door from the manufacturer and I also described it in detail. It took multiple emails back and forth to get the right door to be ordered. It was suppose to come in a week. Day after day, we would get messages that the door would arrive today to be installed tomorrow. The week turned into two, then three. My husband and I shifted schedules to make certain someone was available at the house but the door would not arrive. In anticipation of the door installation, the contractor removed brick molding and inside trim from my front door. This left huge gaps on the sides of the door and I could literally see the outside. The gaps also let bugs into the house, the cold, and blowing rain. The trim was off almost a month during these delays. The first door that arrived was the wrong size due to the supply company's error. The second door was bigger than expected and they had to keep shaving off wood in the framing of the house, the drywall, and the siding to fit the door. We finally fired this contractor during the door job. The new handle and lockset required drilling through the door and chiseling out some areas for proper fit. The contractor left for the day without installing the handle or lock while the door was being painted. He told the painters to install the handle. First, they were not carpenters and did not have the right tools. Second, they were not good painters and I did not them to screw up the door. The paint job on the door was horribly streaked with runs, bubbles, and paint was all over the edges of the sidelights. When we called to complain, the contractor kept saying that these painters do jobs for realtors all the time and they just love the job they do, blah, blah, blah. . . . Then he blamed the paint. He also refused to come back that night or send anyone competent to install the door handle or a lock for the door blaming me for not letting the incompetent painters install the handle. I ended up having to install a locking door knob to keep the door closed for the night. Because of the opening size, I could not install a deadbolt and had an unsecured house for the night. This contractor tries to shift the blame to everyone and everything else. He begrudgingly repairs unprofessional work to something that is passable. When biding on the job, he indicated he would be on the job site to oversee the work. He was rarely on the job and his workers needed supervision. We were told the workers would arrive by 7:00 am and were up and waiting. Most days workers did not arrive until closer to 9:00 am and left before 3:00 pm. We were never sure when or if they would come. Because one of the workers asked how to expunge a criminal record, we would not allow workers to be at the house without one of us present.

Mr. McCaffrey and his crew did excellent work throughout the six weeks he was at my home. The architecture of my home's exterior is full of unusual and difficult angles; thanks to Doug's eye for detail and commitment to performing to the best standards, every plank and join fits exactly and smoothly. In 2015 we are still enjoying the appearance of the work he did and consider that our home's value has been increased. Doug was on the job every day for the six weeks Remodel Raleigh was at my house. He was a firm and effective manager of his workers. The work continued smoothly. I never saw anyone hanging around, goofing off, or waiting for something to do. Morale was excellent. He chose his three carpenters well; they were exacting and dedicated to doing a good job. The same guys worked with him every day. He and his men were not only on time, they worked early and late most days. Their breaks from work were few and short in duration. No one vanished from the job site without explanation. I appreciated not being bombarded with swearing and loud radio music. There was no "collateral damage" to my home or other property. Tools were stored and debris was cleaned up every evening. At the end of the project one of the carpenters spent a good chunk of time running a strong magnet over the surface of my entire property, collecting loose nails and other metallic by-products. At no time over the course of the months during and following the job did we, our dog, or our cars sustain any damage from "left-overs." I am the woman in the partnership between me and my husband. Being the more practical of the two of us, it was my job to choose, contact and confer with Mr. McCaffrey on our job. I am now 61 years old. I have seen my share of belittling and patronizing treatment over the years. Absolutely never in my lengthy experience with Doug and his crew was I treated with anything other than respect, equality, and appreciation for my understanding and intelligence. Doug continually updated me about progress. He ran every decision past me, educating me about the pros and cons and estimating the cost of each change, so that I could make a good decision about what I wanted done. This greatly increased my confidence in him and his work. It was a boon not to wonder each day whether work was being done up to specs and according to my wishes. Mr. McCaffrey only asked for payment necessary to complete the next phase before entering into the that part of the job. There was no "half now, half on completion" requirement which often results in contractors disappearing from one's job for lengthy amounts of time. Finances were handled with full description, accuracy, and in detail. We had quite a few change orders as problems were uncovered on my 34 year-old house. These were handled smoothly. I felt Mr. McCaffrey was collaborating with me; never did I sense I was being pressured or left out in the cold. On my job Mr. McCaffrey demonstrated a high content of character that is unusual in our times. While he and his men had access to my house I never worried for the safety of my person, property, or possessions. At times when I had to be away from home I was comfortable with leaving him in charge. I never had that niggling sense of unease in my mind that one has with some workers. The job was done well. I was treated well. For three or four years now he has been the victim of repeated vengeful allegations about his competence, professionalism, and character. I am the one who recommended Remodel Raleigh for that job, an action I deeply regret. I heard from both these men during it. While I do not know everything that transpired, I cannot credit, based on my own experience with Mr. McCaffrey, that he deserves these attacks.
Description of Work: Doug McCaffrey of Remodel Raleigh removed and replaced the old siding of my entire house with Hardiplank. He made improvements as he went along, such as installing plywood where it was needed around my chimney and outdoor storage room and replacing decking. Where he found damage to the structural band under some of the old siding he remedied that. He replaced some windows that were old and installed plastic sills that would withstand NC weather. He remedied numerous smaller problems that he encountered as the job progressed. His subcontractor painted the entire exterior after the work was completed, including the deck.

I thank [removed member's name] for her kind words. These are the type of words I have heard my entire career. I work every job myself personally all day. I do this for a reason: I sold job, I know the details. Most of all, I know the nuances of how and why you want things done a certain way. It has always my goal to do job right and please my clients.

Description of Work: Did not get builder permit and after work done Doug applied for permit and the city failed the inspection. The bank said he on did 50% of the work he was paid for. Also had medical due to his work. We had sale our house because of the expence to clean and fix things he did not repair.

To whom who may read this. Most of what he said was not true at all. His job was roofing, drywall and painting only. It was suggested I bill insurance more for this work. Yes, there was a permit pulled only because of $$ figure. The only things found wrong were things of owners not related to repair. The gentleman's review of me is not remotely connected with any I have done in 32 yrs. See GC Licensing Board (they threw out his complaint) and BBB. Thank you

The workers were on time most days, worked diligently and cleaned up at the end of each day. At times, I felt there should have been closer supervision of the work being done. There were a few items that were done incorrectly or with less that professional workmanship, but Mr. McCaffrey stood behind his work and offered to correct any and all problems with no hassle or questions. |Remodel Raleigh, Inc. did a good job on installation of new rain system and diverters, good work on the wall waterproofing, and good work on the crawl space vapor barrier and insulation.
Description of Work: Remodel Raleigh, Inc. replaced gutters, waterproofed an exterior wall to crawl space, added vapor barrier and insulation to crawl space, replaced some rot damaged boards and added new flashing, primed and painted new trim boards.
