I have worked around AC systems for years and am fairly competent regarding their operation. This was the first hot spell of the season. I'm sure they were busy. I had reason to believe the system was low on freon. The technician did not want to discuss the likely problem, ignored my requests, didn't share information unless directly asked. He insisted on checking the inside unit. He roughly pried open the cover from the unit, bending the cover in the process, removed duct tape and internal frames to look at the evaporator coil. I asked why.. He said to check for frozen coil. This made no sense since the unit had not been run nor worked at all this season. But reason didn't stop him from continuing. The new excuse was to see if there was obstruction in the coils. The fact that the fan was blowing air just fine made no difference to this technician. With his rough handing of an older unit, my fear is that he was going to cause a leak and therefore decide the unit needed replacement. He was also leaning on a suspended long drain line on the verge of breaking it. I was on the verge of asking him to leave when he started bending the cover but he quickly had caused so much damage and disassembly that I wanted it fixed before he left. Eventually after much wasted time, he concludes everything was fine, sealed everything back up and finally proceeded outside to check the pressure as I had originally requested. Pressure reported as very low. The technician's attitude was of someone trying to up-sell. So the following actions didn't surprise me but did disappoint greatly. He said there was likely a leak. I asked if he could use the freon detector on the outside coils to find a leak as I have had other service personel do in the past. He said that to wave the freon detector over the outside coils he was standing next to would cost $200. He said they were required to check the inside coils as well. The same inside coil he had just opened up but had since closed up and re-duct taped. It would have taken seconds to wave the detector over the outside coils. $200 fixed charge didn't make sense in this situation. It was obstinate and an obvious attempt to charge more money for services regardless of need. He also said they could perform a pressure test for $600. He then says the system needs to be recharged. I say ok. Eventually it occurrs to me to ask how many pounds that will be given a $122/lb cost stated on the phone when I scheduled the appointment. He then says it will be 8 lbs! Apparently this technician didn't see the need to volunteer a close to $1000 cost to recharge the system unless I asked? He then offered to have someone come estimate replacing the system. The entire ordeal was of someone ignoring my requests, being very careless with my property, and proceeding down an unnecessary process of trying to upsell. Technician seemed very untrustworthy and trying to take advantage of what he assumed was an uninformed customer. I felt as it someone was trying to steal from me. I worry about uninformed customers who may be taken advantage of.
Description of Work: System not cooling. Service call to determine whats wrong and fix it. My intent was to have the system recharged since I thought it likely low on freon.

Adam, the rep that conducted the initial visit reviewed the area under question and provided an estimate of the project. He was a great introduction to the company. I agreed to the offer after receiving several other proposals. Following the arrangement of the project, including the date that I had to change at the last moment, the technicians performed the job. They did a excellent job, even better than the original set-up of the condenser, which is the reason for the relocation. Following completion of the project, I mentioned the 10% off coupon that was on-line from Angie's List and it was accepted, to my delight. Anytime you can receive a discount on anything it is great, especially when you do not expect it to be honered. Great job, great price, great dealings with all involved. Tremendous recommendation to all RHA members.
Description of Work: RHA relocated a mini-split condenser from the side of the home to a location under a deck. They placed the condenser on the wall as requested.

Unfortunately, the price was about 20% higher than the other bid and so I decided not to close the deal with RHA but the company is very responsive, professional and I believe would deliver quality work, so I recommend at least getting a quote form them for any HVAC work. I will definitely consider them again, if I need HVAC work done.

They were super. They came in and investigated the existing systems both upstairs and downstairs. I was very pleased with the thoroughness they took in investigating the old system, what needed to be updated, and the options they presented. They made some recommendations. I was going to replace the air conditioning, and they gave me discounts by replacing the entire system upstairs and down. They came in and did the work in a-day-and-a-half as promised. It worked great ever since. It was a lengthy but a good experience. I have had them under service contract for the last five or six years. They came and service the units. I went with them because of their professionalism in maintaining the existing system I had, and I wanted them to get the new. It turned out well.

Adam was very good and knew his stuff. He showed up ready to inspect the location including reviewing the current ducting system. He stated that current duct work showed no signs of needed repair. However, he noted one run was not the appropriate diameter for the rooms that were being serviced. The other estimate we received did not catch this issue. When we called back to discuss the price, they were quite helpful and made some concessions for paying cash vs. financing. Once we decided to go with them to do the job, I wondered whether they could complete the job in 2 days as estimated. To my pleasant surprise, they finished on day 2 with an hour or so to spare. They completed the work with quality using the current thermostat and completed testing of the system. They also scheduled the city inspection that went flawlessly. I checked out the crawlspace and operability and was very pleased. Moreover, Adam helped out with proper paperwork for rebates which were applicable to our job from Progress-Energy & PSNC. All applicable copies for rebates and for our own records were provided in a nice centralized folder. Moreover, the application forms were largely completed. This may seem like small items, but it showed us the attention to detail. We were quite impressed, and will use them for servicing both systems in the future.

Interactions were fine, he was professional, prompt. In the end, his estimate was over twice what we paid.
Description of Work: We're in process of adding onto our home. The person who initiated installation of our hvac system went out of business. According to the initial hvac person's estimate, we still had $1,000 worth of work yet to be completed. We asked for an estimate from Ral. Heating & Air for completion of this job. They gave us an estimate of $1,992.16--nearly twice what we were expecting. We then contacted another local hvac co., told him our story... He looked the situation over and told us, "You don't have $1,000 worth of work to do here." He got the job, finished it promptly and well. We decided to put up the vents ourselves (it's easy), and ended up paying him $589!

Raleigh Heating and Air has had a maintenance contract on my HVAC since 2004. They installed an entire new HVAC system in 2007. Their work is always very professional and I am always very satisfied with the work they perform. On the most recent visit, Joel Heptin performed the semi-annual maintenance. He arrived promptly and did his work quickly and efficiently. This involved accessing the crawl space under my house--not the worst place, but not the most pleasant place either. Joel was undeterred! He checked the furnace completely as well as all the filters and cold-air returns. They now have electronic billing and e-receipts which I like very much. Working with everyone involved at Raleigh Heating and Air is always a pleasure.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience for this replacement or over the years. Not only are the technicians knowledgable, but, everyone from the office personnel to the field techs are very pleasant. Ernest, Jr. & Victor were on time & did not hesitate to answer questions until I knew exactly what they were going to do. The techs also cleaned up the area they worked in when it is complete. Ernest even took my arm to help me walk back to the house after examining the job before signing off on it because I didn't have my cane. Would I recommend them? Most definetly!!
Description of Work: Upon performing the winter tuneup on 2 HV/AC units on 11/21/12, they found the heat pump was not working on one of them. A salesman was sent that same afternoon to go over how much I could spend & what I expected of the unit for the price. He gave me 4 quotes after applying the coupon from Angie's List magazine & a credit for the part which had already been replaced on the air handler before the other part of the unit was checked. He explained the pros & cons of each brand so I could make an informed decision. We agreed on a date for installation which was 11/29/12. The amount of the quote that I chose was what I paid, no surprises.

Adam Hagen arrived promptly to provide an estimate and explain the options available... personable, knowledgeable and absolutely no pressure. He explained the options thoroughly and honestly, which I appreciated. Junior and Victor arrived bright & early on the date of the installation, and were very professional and mindful of both the inside and outside of my home. They removed the old unit and all trash and debris from installing the new unit. Junior is very personable, a likeable fella, and graciously programmed my thermostat to my specifications and made sure I understood what I needed to do to change any of the settings. Everyone I spoke with from Raleigh Heating & Air, either face-to-face or on the phone, was friendly, pleasant and focused on my needs... Adam, Junior, Victor, Chris, Jason, Mark (hope I have this right), Everett, Shellie & Ginger (hope I haven't missed anyone). A top rate company, staffed by professional and personable folks. Thanks everyone! You made investing in a new heating/cooling system fun and not the least bit intimidating! I'll absolutely recommend you to anyone interested in a new heating/cooling system. Thanks again for a job well done... and the giggles & grins.

I called and talked to Cat at Raleigh heat and Air. I was calling for my brother in law who had been injured in a nearly fatal auto accident over 2 years ago. He had just 2 months ago had his last surgery to rebuild his shoulder. He has been unable to work, and his AC/Heat broke back at the end of the summer With cold weather coming on, his mother decided to try and help him by getting his heat repaired. I called Raleigh Heating and Air, and they were incredible! Called first thing in the morning, and by 4:30 there was a tech under my brother in law's house. The previous "tech?" that had worked on the heat had incorrectly connected a great deal of the wiring which had caused a transformer to burn out eventually and thus the entire AC/Heat unit to stop working. The guy from Raleigh Heating and Air, not only rewired the control board correctly, he even was able to install and make work a replacement transformer. The original part could not even be found any more so this guy fabricated one out of a newer transformer. The repairs were complete by 8:30 PM!, and the heat was on and working better than ever. There was a 10% coupon on Angie's site, that I had gotten to my brother in law, which was deducted from total price. This was a great repair, amazing service, and I would highly recommend Raleigh Heating and Air to anyone.
Description of Work: Cat the dispatchlady was awesome! She got the job done, the same day as called as promised. The tech even stayed Late, did not charge extra, and completely troubleshot, repaired, and resolved the problem with the problem with the air handler under the house.

It went better than I would have ever thought it could!
Description of Work: I don't think there enough words to express how happy we are with our new York system! Of course now that we have a new system I'm having a hard time sleeping - this one is so QUIET! I never realized how loud the old system was nor how much it ran in the heat! This one actually cools the house off and then it shuts off! Amazing! It's the little things right? RHA showed up on time for the install. We did a walk around as the techs discussed the options for where to place the new unit and what the pros/cons were for each. We had cleared out around the existing system and it wasn't suitable for this new bigger unit, so and another site was determined to be ideal - so of course it was one where I'd moved some stuff to! Not a problem the guys said, they'd move it. It wasn't much, just a bucket of firewood and some portable "beds" from my vegetable garden but I felt like had failed in prepping right! Anyway, they were here all day and the system is just lovely. They cleaned up everywhere - I think they even vacuumed my carpet outside of the mechanical room! I've found NOTHING out on the ground - no little bits of trash or screws from the old unit - anywhere. They left it cleaner then they found it! I love RHA, they've been great in helping us keep our old system chugging along for the last few years and they've been extremely helpful with questions and our concerns. I'm singing your praises to anyone who asks about HVAC folks - keep up the phenomenal service! The Bates

roMy AC wasn't blowing cool air and after sleeping through an 85-degree night we called Raleigh Heating and Air. I wasn't expecting anyone to come over anytime soon since it was Sunday and the dispatcher level-set expectations with me that we might be further down the list. As luck would have it, Torrie was nearby and so was at our house about an hour after we called. He diagnosed the problem (we were low on Freon) and de-iced the coil, vacuumed all the water out of the pan, and replaced about 2 pounds of Freon. He was professional and honest about what we needed and what we didn't. I was also able to use a 10% off coupon from Angie's List. Good experience and would call them again, which we probably will have to in a year or so since we're about 11 years into this AC unit.

They sent a technician out first, who sent a salesman for follow up. The salesman then came, who confirmed that the unit would need to be replaced soon because the compressor looked like it was about to go out. We were a little stunned at the cost of the replacement. We got a second and third opinion from someone else, who both said it would be impossible to just look at the compressor and say it was almost ready to go out. I feel like they just wanted to sell us a new unit.

We were in the market for a new central air system. We have a maintenance contract with another firm at present. We got estimates from both firms. Both firms did a steller job of working up the estimate to fit our needs. Sizing the system for our home and the new supply vents we were requesting. We eventually went with our current maintenance partner to keep it simple, whereas both firms were very equivalent in price and guarantees as we understood it. But I wanted to give kudos to Raleigh Air for their effort, they certainly convinced me that they would be a good firm to also do business with if our needs changed in the future

Luke and Clifton worked for 2 days clearing out the old duct work and putting in the new unit. OUTSTANDING, EXCELLENT, DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I am so very pleased with the professional service I received from Raleigh Heating and Air. From my initial phone call to the woman who answered the phone and immediately assisted me with an appointment (she was very nice, to the point, never put me on hold, free estimate date made, rate A). Chuck Sharrett came to my home for a free estimate. He explained in detail what he would/could do for me, presented three different options with prices. It was very clear this man new his business. He was very professional, took his time with me, answered all my questions and more. I was impressed with his ability to explain what the job entailed. When he left I felt very satisfied with a better understanding of how the heating/air system worked, the installation, etc. I definitely give him a A+++++rating. INSTALLATION DAY...Jason Hogg and Clifton Bridges installed the new Trane heating/air system. They were extremely professional. It was obvious they both new exactly what they were doing and diligently installed the new heating/air system. I was present during the entire job and I must say Jason and Clifton worked great as a team. Special thanks for Jason and Clifton....you did a great job.....I give you both an A++++++++rating. I am extremely happy with all services from that initial phone call to the very end......HIGHLY RECOMMEND, PRICING WAS VERY GOOD, OUTSTANDING SERVICE. I had four companies come to my home for estimates and I really took great consideration in choosing the company I wanted. I am so glad I chose RALEIGH HEATING AND AIR.

My downstairs heat had failed, and though I was planning to replace the whole downstairs system in a few months, this was a surprise. I had tried to get a home warranty company to repair or replace the failed furnace, but when their provider hit me with an estimate for multiple thousands of dollars for that work and a note that the warranty covered about $400 of it, I decided to replace at that point instead of later. I had a better idea what I wanted this time, and while I got other estimates, I chose Raleigh Heating and Air based upon my experience with them in replacing my upstairs system (earlier in the year). The estimator explained the differences in going to a higher efficiency furnace and I decided it made sense, so I chose that instead of merely duplicating the upstairs system. Not the least expensive nor the most (even though this time I provided model numbers to everybody whom I contacted for an estimate). When scheduling this installation, I was asked whether I wanted the same installation crew as for my upstairs system, and I said yes (with some enthusiasm). The first day, the crew shows up, dismantles the existing system, and removes the existing ducts. I didn't have anything special happening in my crawlspace, so they did not have anything to work around like they had with my attic, and I didn't change anything between the days. The second day they installed the new system and new ducts. Once that was done, they tested it and it all worked perfectly. Both days the crew are on time (actually a little early). The installation crew did not need access to the inside of the house for much of this one (only when replacing the vent boots with insulated ones and sealing the ducts), but they were careful not to bring in any debris and made sure everything was clean as they were finishing. The old downstairs system had looked strewn about the crawlspace in what seemed to be some kind of 'random fit' arrangement, but the new system looked great. Wires were in conduits, the condensate drains were suspended from the ceiling, the ducts and distribution nodes were suspended. The new system needed a different exhaust path, and that was taken care of cleanly, from how it was suspended from above to the hole for it through the foundation wall. Everything looked clean and planned and well implemented, and the crawlspace looked better than it had before. There was a minor detail found during the inspection process (something was a little loose) but one of the install crew came out right away and fixed it. This system was another great improvement, this time in the 'feel' of the downstairs air, and the cost to heat and cool the downstairs of my house.
Description of Work: Remove downstairs heating and air conditioning system. Remove downstairs heating and air conditioning ducts. Install replacement downstairs heating (95% natural gas furnace) & air conditioning (16 SEER / 13 EER) system. Install insulated (R-8 reflective) downstairs heating and air conditioning ducts, increasing return duct size. Install upgraded programmable thermostat with humidity monitoring capability.

It took me a while to choose systems because my house has a split system but is not large enough to require a 2-ton unit on each floor. I originally started out hoping for a very high-efficiency system (instead of what is now only a little more efficient than requirements), but during the estimate process I discovered there could be problems with the increase in system size that would be required by such an upgrade. After considerable research, I decided to go with a system that was equivalently sized to my existing inefficient (and, at the time, failed) system with one that was as good as I could reasonably get in the same size range. The people at Raleigh Heating and Air were helpful through this entire process and provided information or pointers as requested, as well as estimates based upon various ideas I had for configuration, and did not try to sell me a more complex or expensive system. I finally decided on what I wanted, and they provided the final estimate quickly. As usual for me, Raleigh Heating & Air's price was not the lowest, nor was it the highest, but it was toward the high end of the main cluster. When I approved the work, they started very quickly. The crew arrived on time for the appointment, laid down material to protect my carpets, and went to work. By the end of the first day, they had the old system and vent ducts removed. I had asked them (before they started) to leave it in that state, since I was working on increasing the insulation in my attic and wanted to do some work behind (and under) the furnace platform to improve the insulation in those areas while the furnace was out and I could access them. The second day they brought in and connected the new system, ran the ducts, and sealed everything. Once everything had been set up, they turned it on and checked it out and it all worked beautifully. They took up the carpet protection and cleaned up what bits had escaped it. The hallway and stairs they had to use to get to the attic looked as good after the installation crew finished as when they started, and, quite frankly, the attic looked far better -- the new system looked well planned and well implemented, with wiring thorough conduits and ducts and distribution nodes well placed (the old system looked rather like somebody had thrown it together hastily). I was particularly happy with the way the installation crew worked with me on my ongoing attic project. I had been installing a radiant barrier below the roof and increasing the insulation above the upstairs ceiling and they worked around my changes without any problems. They put the new unit on the platform where the old unit was before (I had raised it by a bit and added insulation under it during the night between removal of the old unit and installation of the new unit) and placed the air distribution nodes on insulated platforms I provided. They suspended the ducts from the roof so they would not rest on the attic insulation. They suspended the power, refrigerant, and control lines from the roof to they would not rest on the attic insulation. The new system is great, and it immediately reduced my power and gas bills. Moving from a roughly 25 year old air conditioner and natural gas furnace to a modern system improved the 'feel' of the upstairs, the noise from the system, and the power and fuel consumption. I already had programmable thermostats so that was not new, but some of the added features (like running the air condition a little longer to reduce humidity) also contributed to greater comfort.
Description of Work: Remove upstairs hearing and cooling system. Remove upstairs heating and cooling ducts. Install new upstairs hearing and cooling system (80% natural gas furnace, 16 SEER / 13 EER air conditioning). Install new insulated (R8 reflective) heating and cooling ducts for new upstairs system, enlarging the return duct. Ensure new duct system is fully sealed. Replace upstairs thermostat with a modern programmable unit that can also monitor humidity.
