Contacted Michael & Son regarding a water heater not creating hot water. Glenn was dispatched to resolve the issue. He was able to re-light the pilot light, then the burner and the unit began heating water. He never tried troubleshoot the cause, only set about attempting to sell us new equipment. When he saw we were not quick to bite on the sales pitch, he tried even harder by detailing numerous worst-case scenarios if we didn't replace the unit right then. The detail he went into on how he would go about the replacement was way more than necessary. Then came the price, $3300!! It took forever to get to point where we could pay for the service call and be done. Afterwards, he sat in his truck for 20 minutes in front of our house, he just wouldn't leave. Realizing the unit probably needed repair or replacement, we contacted another A+ plumbing company and had the unit troubleshot. We had two options, a $500 repair on a 12 year old unit or replacement for $1900, a 40%+ savings over Michael & Sons pricing. Can't say I would ever contact Michael & Sons again or recommend them either.

It was a so-so experience. The work was fine, to some degree. I'm going to have to call them back because my water pressure in my master bedroom, which is the main room that we use water in the house is still low. I spent $783 for them to replace a valve and I don't like the water pressure. I thought they were expensive. The quality of experience was fine, the guy was polite and everything. I need to call them because I don't like the water pressure in my bedroom, it's not what it was before. I would like it to be of some semblance of what it was before. These guys are very popular around here, they have their advertisements everywhere and they're a very big local plumbing company here. But, I'm going to have to call them back as I see it because that particular part of the experience, I'm not satisfied with. I'm sure they will come out, but then again, they're going to be asking me for some more money too, I'm sure and I don't think that's fair. They could have left my water pressure how it was. That's one thing they could have done for sure. Again, I thought the price was a little high too. I spent almost $1000 with them.

Allen was the technician who ran the job, and he was very personable and professional, communicated very well and was willing to take the time to discuss the details of the whole job. The only small thing that we need to have looked at again is the outlet that doesn't quite go into the electrical box all the way--it's quite possible that there's a stud behind it and it's simply won't go in all the way, but haven't had a chance to discuss with Allen yet (he left a direct number where we could contact him, which was very nice!). We didn't realize that electrical work could be that expensive, though, which is probably likely due to the fact that we haven't had any electrical work done in years.

The company is, in my opinion, undependable.
Description of Work: Calls were exchanged to schedule a time on a Sunday. I was told twice that the electrician would be at my apartment in Chapel Hill this Sunday between 10 am and 2 pm. I adjusted my schedule accordingly. At noon, I was told that the electrician would not be coming and that the company wanted to reschedule. I said I preferred not to go ahead with this company. I have had to approach another electrician.

Extremely poor. They could not provide service in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Discovered a pinhole leak in the hot water line in the wall. Called them at 8:15 am on Friday, they said they would have someone out to our house the same day. The repairman would call 30 - 45 minutes prior to arriving. At 2:00 pm they called and said that they could not get anyone out until Monday leaving us without hot water for 3.5 days. That is unacceptable service when they tout their 24/7 service in their ad. Found another plumber who could come out on Saturday.

While reinforcing the power box on the outside of the house, the electrician run 3 long screws thru the wall and into the dining room... And the plumber, while replacing the leaky tub spout, twisted the copper pipe in the wall behind the tub requiring the tub surround to be removed to fix it. Both of the techs were apologetic and I know things "happen" but we already spend over 30K to get the house ready for sale including all new flooring and paint... Now we had pay our contractor stop what they were working on to remove and replace the tub surround, fix the walls and repaint.
Description of Work: Got got both an Electric and Plumbing discount deal to finish up some punch list items... Install GFI breakers, firmly attach power box to house, fix leaky tub spout, and other small things.

I had an unacceptable experience with this company. If I could grade this company a Z, I would do so. The whole issue started with a strange noise in one of my bathrooms. When the toilet would flush, it would sound like the pipes were rumbling through the wall. Long story short, we contacted Michael & Sons. A nice gentleman (or so we thought at the time) by the name of Everett came by and told us that we needed to replace the pressure relief valve. He specifically suggested that we try changing it ourselves. He told us it was like “screwing in a garden hose.” The water pressure was not measured on this visit. Everett also told us if we had any trouble with it to give them a call. We followed Everett’s instructions, and to make a long story short, it was not like screwing in a garden hose, as it turns out the PRV that we purchased from Lowe’s did not fit our piping. We called M &S after hours and Glenn serviced us. During the process, Glenn commented that our PRV was in pretty good condition, and he even showed us that the washers were still fine. At some point, it came up that we were replacing the PRV to settle the noise between the walls. Glenn emphatically told us that would not solve our problem. (Note: We still have the documentation that states this.) Naturally, we were shocked and appalled by this revelation since we had been told something entirely different. In summary, for the next two days I went back and forth with the owner, Lou, and the manager, Duane. Both of them were full of excuses. They could not fathom that Everett told us such a thing. Lou even had the colossal nerve to blame my husband, and then when that didn’t work, they threw poor Glenn under the bus, calling him inexperienced. Even with the all of these atrocities, I still entered into a temporary truce with them, meaning I would keep a look out to see if the sound return, document, and then we would decide what was next. Well, I did all of that, and surprise, surprise, the sound returned multiple times, not just in the original location but in my master bathroom. Every time I heard the sound, I became frustrated and angry. I paid this company over $500.00 for a worthless repair that did not even solve my problem. After multiple times of hearing this noise, I decided that I wanted nothing further to do with this company. (Luckily, I was able to find someone respectable to assist me.) I requested the cost of the PRV be refunded to my credit card minus the cost of the after hours visit. I also told Lou to retrieve this worthless PRV that his company installed that did absolutely nothing for me. I have heard nothing but crickets from this gentleman. I will remind you that if the water pressure had been measured prior Everett dispensing advice, this unnecessary repair could have been avoided. Lou, nor Dwayne had no explanation as to why this was not done, yet that had excuses and finger pointing for everything else. I will be the first to admit. I was extremely naïve and trusting with this company. I will not make that mistake again when I hire another contractor. I am under no allusion that it will be an easy fight in getting my refund, given the arrogance of this owner, but I plan on fighting him tooth and nail for it. I am still on the fence as to whether this company is ethically challenged or incompetent, but in my opinion, I would THINK TWICE ABOUT HIRING t this company to come into your home. I can not in good conscience let others make the same mistake I made. Save your self the unnecessary hassle, and in my case the worthless repair. The owner, Lou, will have all kinds of excuses on this site justifying his actions, (which I can dispute with documentation, I also have the original PRV, which is in fine condition in my possession) mark my word. My advice to him is to save it for court. *Update 10/2/2017* This matter has been resolved AFTER taking the company to court and successfully obtaining a judgement against them in Wake County small claims court. It took the intervention of the courts to obtain a satisfactory resolution. In my opinion, this whole ordeal was unnecessary and the management is incapable of customer service. I will NEVER do business with this company again.

The switches (which I purchased independently) did not work as expected. Michael and Son's Electrician Marshall checked them ahead of time, and thought they would work as well. Everything went well with Michael & Son and the technician, Everett C, especially considering it was 9:00PM on a Sunday night. Everett provides me with options and explanations along the way and answered all my questions thoroughly and in terms I could understand. Everett went the extra mile to find the water meter in my yard to be able to complete the job that night and not leave me without water until then next day. It was buried in a flower bed but he found it and got the job done.

Technician tested water pressure and recommended replacing the pressure control valve. The total for the requested sink and spigot work and the pressure valve came to over $1000 in addition to the Angie's List $200 deal we had already paid $119 for. We let him do the two sink valves and paid him $112 in addition to the $200 credit from Angie's List. He finished the work in less than 30 minutes. The sales pitch took longer than the work. I got a local company to test the pressure valve and replace the two spigots. He found the valve to be working properly and completed the rest of the job in a total of 2 hours for $294.

We called to get a quote on moving an electrical panel. The scheduling process was handled smoothly and an electrician was dispatched to the house within a business day (at a low dispatch fee compared to other companies). Harrison gave us a courtesy call in advance of arriving, arrived on time, and spent a good chunk of time assessing the job and advising us on our options. Gotta say - what a gem! He was professional at all times, respectful of our home, knowledgeable about his product/service, personable, and creative. He left us with total confidence in Michael & Son's ability to get the job done on time and to our satisfaction. I only wish the quote to do the work was lower. It would be a no-brainer in that case!
