Tom comunicated the work to be done and returned with sample bricks to ensure best match with existing steps. Work was thorough and well done. Tom answered all questions and provided insight into the project. Had a couple of delays around Christmas but this was not an inconvenience for us. All in all, very pleased with Tom and the project.

Tom was wonderful to work with and very affordable. He was respectful, took care not to damage our home, cleaned up well, and checked in quite frequently to ensure all the work was done to satisfaction. We were very happy with the results, and gave us other good advice about repairs as well.

This review is in addition to a review I wrote on 7/22/14 saying Tom was not getting back with me. Tom had his reasons which he later explained and he agreed that this is something he will improve on. Bottom line is when Tom came to do the work he worked hard, did a great job. He was there each day and worked until the job was completed. Each day he cleaned up before leaving the job site. I would hire Tom again and would refer him. Thanks Tom for a great job.
Description of Work: Tom built a block retaining wall along my elevated driveway. The wall was approximately 25' in length and almost 2' in height. Tom also added a nice cap as the top layer of the wall. A small section of driveway was also replaced as part of the job.

There are tricks in every trade, and Tom Markulin appears to know them all. I had made some ham-fisted repair to some of the steps as an emergency safety measure so we could get in and out of the house. He fixed those in a professional manner and erased any sign of the bad work I had done. For the rest, as agreed, he repaired my other loose bricks and rejointed and repaired the mortar work on the rest of the stairs. He arrived on schedule, on time, and was prepared to do the work. He and a helper did a very professional job. They left my steps in excellent condition. He did clean work and cleaned up after completion. In addition, I want to mention that Tom Markulin is a very pleasant person and very easy to work with. I recommend him wholeheartedly.

Called Masonry Concepts on or about 4/15/14. Tom called me back. I explained I needed an estimate for a relatively small job. Culvert retaining walls along driveway. Since it was Easter week and he was busy we agreed Tom would call me back the following week. I waited until Thursday of the following week and received no call back so I called Tom. He was apologetic and stated he was finishing up a job and was it ok to call me the next week. I said ok. Another week went by with no call back.

I'm sorry that I did not follow up in a more prompt manner. I did explain that I was very busy trying to complete the large job I was currently working. The snow storms early in the year as well as the recent rains have delayed most of my projects by a minimum of eight weeks. I completely understand your frustration and I hope you are able to find another mason to complete your project.

I should have paid attention to the B rating, but wanted to give Tom the benefit of the doubt. I called and left a message - twice. On my third call, which would have been my final attempt to reach him, he answered and we made an appointment for him to come out and take a walkaround, seeing what we had in mind. He arrived late, after I called to see where he was, and we discussed the job and options he could offer. He was businesslike at the time, but never apologized for his lateness or not returning my previous calls. This meeting was on a Tuesday, and he said he'd call back with an estimate by the end of the week. It is now more than a month later, and he has never called back. Meanwhile, I found someone else to do the job, and I am extremely happy with them. I will never contact another B rated business again - they are not rated higher for a good reason. Don't waste your time with this guy.
Description of Work: The project involved widening the driveway, demo and removing old sidewalk, removing the old brick front steps and stoop and rebuilding it larger, and pouring a new stamped concrete walkway from the widened driveway to the front door.

Thank you for your feedback. I apologize for the lack of response. This has been a very difficult time. The weather this year has delayed many projects and unfortunately some calls and estimates have fallen through. I do not have any crew or office staff and I apologize for the miscommunication. Email and text are always the best ways to contact me because it gives me a written response for follow-up. There must have been a misunderstanding with you as well. I do remember telling you that I do not do stamped concrete and that you would need to find someone else for the part of the project. Because I couldn't do all of the work, I assumed you hired another company. Thank you for giving me an opportunity, however, I have always maintained an A rating here as well as an A+ rating on the BBB. It was truly a lack of communication on my part and for that I apologize. I am glad to hear you found someone else and that you are happy with your completed project.

Tom showed up on time both to quote the job and to do the work. It took them about a day to finish the work. During the brick repair they found separated foundation blocks behind the brick and repaired that as well. The finished worked turned out much better than I expected. Also when they cut the walkway the cut was very straight. It looks original and the crack is now gone. I would recommend Masonry Concepts and I would use them again.

Overall a very unprofessional experience I would not recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: We contacted this company do a small patio and brick work at our home. He was very accommodating with arranging a visit to see the project and provided nice feedback. Following the estimate (which the homeowner had to drive 2 hours to town to meet with him) he did not follow up concerning a timeline for the project, wasting over a month of our time while we waited for him to start the project or at least let us know when he could begin work.

I requested a quote and Tom came out right away, evaluated the work, and sent the quote for $850 a couple of days later. The other two companies that I contacted were too busy to come out and give an estimate for a smaller job (would have been several weeks delay with one of them). I wanted the job done soon because I am replacing a fence, and Tom's estimate was reasonable and he has good ratings, so I hired him. I arranged to have utilities marked (this took a few days), then they came out to do the work. The first day was excavating and preparation, the second day they repaired the drain, returned the removed dirt to the hole, and repaired a loose brick on the step in my garage. The people were professional, the work done as agreed, and the quality looks good. The original estimate was right on, and happily was a little bit lower than the person from the city who came out said it would likely have cost.
Description of Work: Masonry Concepts performed several services in one project: Excavate and repair a damaged concrete pipe that goes under my yard for drainage; add some mortar and smooth the surfaces of a nearby drain where it had deteriorated; and repair a loose brick on the step in my garage.

The project took several weeks longer than first estimated but the results spoke for themselves. The walls are twice as thick and are much stronger than original and tie into the foundation walls where as before they did not. Tom worked carefully to match the new brick with the old, salvaged as much old brick as possible, matched cracked patio floor tiles, rehung the wrought iron patio gate with a much better fit than original and provided a unique drain system for rain water run off. Big projects like this cannot be rushed so if you want it done right patience pays off. I even paid Tom a bonus as I was that pleased with the final results.
Description of Work: Complete rebuild of the brick patio walls of my 23 year old town house. After comparing 3 bids, Tom Markulin of Masonry Concepts provided both the best price and best ideas as how to tear down and replace 3 brick walls for my outdoor patio. The original construction was both weak and of a poor design. Tom does the work himself and puts both thought and pride into making sure the finished product is what you want. Constant communications is critical. Tom takes the time to be sure you get what you want and checks continuously with you on progress.

Tom was very punctual and came over after a bigger job to do an estimate on repairing some cosmetic cracks on the outside of our slab foundation. He was willing to do the work to satisfy the buyer of our home using the best practices. We ultimately decided not to do the work as our buyer decided to take responsibility for fixing the cracks. I would use Tom again for concrete/masonry needs.
