Excellent job by the guy who came over. For starters he was right on time, a few minutes early actually. That's always a plus in my book. I had to rip out a corner of the kitchen ceiling when my wax ring in the bathroom upstairs leaked. The hole was fairly small (around 20x30") and it butted up against the other sheetrock edges so all the edges were nice and straight. I could have handled it except it was above the corner cabinet and my arms were too short to reach everything and it would have been difficult for me to do a decent job. The guy (I think his name was Arturo) was very professional, covered everything up and when he started and cleaned everything up right down to sweeping my patio when the job was complete. There was no mess in my house from the sanding (my wife hates when I sand because I get it over everything!). Overall it's going to look like a patch job because it is and the location was difficult. But it was a hole before and now it's fixed so I'm good with that. It took around 2.5 hours from start to finish. Communications with Jose was very easy, he was responsive and easy to work with. I had to cancel on him twice due to illness and he was very accommodating both times when rescheduling. I had gotten some pricing before and his price was much much better. I would definitely recommend him based on the job that he did for me and I would use him again for any future work. Thank you!

All went very well and I was very impressed with Jose's (the owner) process. First we scheduled a time for Jose to come and assess my project (something that not all contractors have done in my experience). He was very thorough and offered me an option other than just caulking and painting the areas that were shedding. He suggested adding crown molding (quarter rounds) all around the living room between the top of the wall and the ceiling and the same in the master bedroom but just around the the wooden beam in the center of the room that supported a ceiling fan. I hope in the future to have the rest of the bedroom completely done with the same crown molding. On the Saturday that we scheduled, Jose came first to meet with the two workers, Francisco and Miguel, to go over what was to be done. He then helped them get all of the materials inside and made sure they really understood what was to happen. He even noticed some shedding and a crack in the hallway ceiling and offered to do that at no extra charge. Wow, I was impressed. Later, the two guys didn't remember hearing about that but said not to worry, they'd do it anyway. I was quite amazed at the risky aerial acts the guys had to go through. They brought in very tall ladders that extended almost to the ceiling but caused them to have to balance on the very top rung of the ladder and then stretch themselves to reach the corner of the room and try to bring two pieces of the molding together without leaving any gap whatsoever. I held my breath sometimes watching them. When the fit wasn't perfect, they'd come down and go back outside to adjust the cut and try again until it was perfect. The work went on all afternoon and I was able to sit in my living room and watch the basketball game (go Tar Heels) and part of a movie while they did all of the work. At first, I thought I'd have to be sequestered in my 2nd bedroom with my cat, Max, but that was full of a lot of stuff that I put in there to clear the space in the living room and I really wanted to see vs. listen to the basketball game! They were OK with me staying in the living room and dining room and master bedroom once they had finished in there.. Max was freaked out at first with all of the moving in of equipment and then when the compressor guns went off, but gradually, he acclimated somewhat, and at one point got out the front door, but I found him eating grass just outside and I quickly brought him back indoors (he's an indoor only cat). I am very happy with the finished job and would definitely contact Jose again when I need to have more work done on the house.
Description of Work: I needed to have someone shore up my popcorn ceiling in my living room and master bedroom both of which have vaulted ceilings with popcorn that has been shedding and needed to be caulked and painted. I also had a crack in my living room wall that they took care of.

It turned out good. The workers were very good and they worked very hard. We had a little communication problem. The scheduling was very good. The cleanup was adequate.

Contractor provided a quote for work to be completed that was way too expensive for the work to be completed. I contacted other contractors for a quote and received quotes for 1/3 of the price of the Angies's List Big Deal contractor.

Some issues with not getting messages returned quickly; contractor had wrong address and didn't show up to appointment on time. He seemed very nice and looked over the work to be done and said he'd be in touch in a day or two to let me know when the work could be done. I didn't hear back for a week and finally had to email to try and initiate contact again. I understand they must be very busy though. In the time that has gone by, I feel like perhaps it would be better for me to get estimates from other contractors for this work after all.

I was happy with it because they did a very good job. I was happy with the work. Once we discussed some things, the man who came out brought three people for a two-man job. That was kind of silly but it worked out just fine. I would use them again. The man really wanted to do the job sooner but I could not have my kitchen torn apart because I had to remove everything off the walls and I had to get everything off the kitchen at Christmas time and that just was not going to happen with cooking, baking and company and all of that. He also came back on January 13th to finish up a few things that I asked him to go over for me. I had to give him another $150 for the supplies. His price was fine and he was very responsive. I think that I would use them again in the future. We had a little discussion about some extra time that he was trying to charge me for but I did not have to pay it after I talked to him and explained why and he was agreeable to that. That worked out well so I think that we both went feeling good about it.
Description of Work: I used the big deal that I purchased from JHR Carpentry Painting and Contractors for putting in a beadboard kitchen backsplash between the upper and lower cabinets and putting in shelves on either sides of a window.

It was fine but I'm not sure if I would use them again. There was a language barrier between me and the workers, which was very frustrating. The painting was also on the sloppy side and it wasn't satisfactory to my liking. They put something on the rotting section of the door and painted it and put back the rotting hinges. I thought they would have put new hinges on it. They were nice but I'd rather to talk to someone that I can fluently communicate with. We had to pay for material which was fine so we paid $60 more than the deal. They also forgot to fix an area that I told them to fix. Again it was because of the language barrier.
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal coupon from JHR Carpentry Painting and Contractors to repair a door in the crawl space whose bottom hinges were rotted and they painted the perimeter of it. They replaced some rotting wood around some windows with similar material.

We purchased a big deal for 3 hours of drywall repair, and Jose came out to look at the project within a few days. We had the drywall ready for him and he said he could fit us in later that day. His crew came by and did a nice installation job. The wall is very smooth and you can hardly tell it was ever cut out. We had a concern about the thickness of the drywall but Jose called us right back and explained details of how to install the trim over it. Jose really cares about making sure his customer is happy with the job and that really means a lot. You can tell he really cares about the outcome and making sure you are satisfied. Would recommend and will use him again.

JHR did exterior repair on my house. Jose was very responsive and knowledgeable. His crew did a good job over a period of days. During the work, the crew discovered additional areas to be repaired/replaced. We had verbal agreement on the additional repair, but didn't have it written down. I had some questions regarding the final invoice and talked to Jose about it. He was courteous in explaining to me and we had it worked out in the end. Overall we received good service at reasonable price. Thank you.

I purchased the $249 handyman for a day deal or two handyman for 4 hours. They did a nice job.
Description of Work: Jose and his team replaced damaged ceiling drywall, replaced broken tile in the bathroom, adjusted a door that was sticking and would not close and added a joist support in the crawl space as needed from an engineers report. At the suggestion of Jose, they also added insulation in the crawl space that was missing and added caulking in a gap in the molding in the bedroom.

The main job I had in mind did not work out through no fault of JHR Carpentry. They did do a minor repair for me and did it well. The primary problem we had was communication. Messages I left with the person answering the phone somehow did not get delivered or attended to. I think that once this company gets their information flow straightened out, they will do a much better job. I was hoping that I could contract with them for a much bigger renovation project but at this point in time, I did not feel comfortable doing that. I would consider using them again for smaller repairs. The owner seems to be knowledgeable and he gave us good information about some small fixes that we need to do.

I have worked with others in the past, and have been sorely disappointed, to say the least. This is NOT one of those experiences. Jose has been quick to correct any issues, as few as they were, and always immediately. He has gone above and beyond, finding solutions to unique problems. They even found me a great plumber. I would call JHR back in for any other .work I would need done, and have already asked him about doing more. I have already recommended him to many of my friends and neighbors, and I recommend that anyone looking for the utmost in skill and professionalism give him a call.
Description of Work: Jose and the guys at JHR have done a little of everything for me. Scratch that; they have done a LOT of everything for me! They rebuilt my porch, they repaired my siding, they rebuilt the ceiling in my hallway, they painted both the interior and exterior, they repaired sheetrock, built a housing for my air return, rebuilt my brick steps, built me a new, removable, wooden step into my garage, repaired my kitchen cabinets and installed the missing trim, power-washed everything and installed crown molding. And they did it all with the utmost in professionalism - and a smile!

Mr. Ramirez came out to do an estimate. He promised an estimate right away and after waiting a week or more and repeated calls, I finally gave up and wrote up a review on Angieslist with an "F". As soon as I wrote that review, I got a phone call and an estimate with a promise that he can work on my project right away. Unfortunately, he did a rush job. He didn?t show up on time either day he came. One day he was over 4 hours late. I noticed a major problem with opening my high quality Marvin sliding glass door where he had installed the trim. If he could not install trim without causing problems to my sliding door, then I cannot trust him with any other carpentry jobs. He was very challenged in his work. When I called Mr. Ramirez, he did not believe me that it was his fault and told me that he would charge me $200 if it was not his fault for him to come out. I started calling and spoke with an authorized Marvin door installer/repairer who would only have charged me $60 to come out and $25/hr so it would have been much cheaper for an installer to fix the door than Mr. Ramirez. Mr. Ramirez definitely caused the problem to my door. A friend offered to fix it and charged me nothing but I gave him a $25 gift for compensation. I cannot recommend Mr. Ramirez. Apparently my job was too small for him to do properly.
Description of Work: Replaced a door in the bathroom, put up trim around a sliding glass door, and painted both doors. But he caused a problem with my Marvin sliding glass door from his repair.

I purchased a big deal for $249.00 for 8 hours of carpentry, painting etc., on November 21, 2013. Someone from JHR's office contacted me on December 2, to schedule a time to come out to see what we needed done. Jose was very professional, he looked around and made notes and told me he would send me an estimate. I received an estimate for $1230.00 to cut and replace a piece of wood 4x3, replace a piece of drywall 2x2, replace 6 pieces of brick moulding around the garage doors and storage door. After reading the reviews it appears that most of the people he serviced was charged an additiona amount. i have requested a refund and will report the false advertising to the attorney general's office.

Jose came to my house for initial consultation. I knew I wanted the old shelves and cabinets removed on either side of my wood stove but was not sure how I wanted to proceed. I wanted to be able to display items and put furniture against the wall under the new shelves but did not know what would work. Jose made some excellent suggestions, drew an illustration of his idea and I agreed. We made a date for his crew to start. The crew showed up as planned, knocked out the work and created a beautiful product. I was thrilled with the results. Very professional job, polite crew and they cleaned up all debris. Each book case hah a large compartment in the center with 3 12x12" cubes on each side. Very pretty and much better than the ideas I had. They finished the look with crown moulding.
Description of Work: Removed old shelving and cabinets in living on each side of my wood stove. Built 2 custom bookshelves to replace old shelves, installed the book shelves and painted them. The portion of wall below book shelves was motored, sanded, primed and painted. Cracks in stone work around wood stove were repaired.
