More than perfect work

Everything went as planned.

This company was recommended by the plumber. I was moving a w/d from a kitchen to another room. Everything Horizon did was fine; they widened the doorway, then replaced the molding, installed the sconces, and replaced two ceiling fans. However, time ran out and Pat Aprea was unable to finish installing a ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms and replacing the ceiling fan in the master bedroom. We made an appointment for him to return the following week. Later that same week, he called for payment. Stupidly I paid the entire bill. Despite repeated requests, he never came back. Several appointments were made, however, he either didn't show or called just minutes before saying he couldn't make it. A year later, I happened to be driving next to the owner. I called his cell and asked him if he is ever in my area; he said no. I've never spoken to him since and of course never received a refund for the work that wasn't performed. What these contractors don't realize is that honesty goes a long way and people are looking for long term contractor relationships with contractors they can trust. I've had a lot of work done since and have only paid for what has been completed. I've never had this experience again, but then again, I won't ever pay in full before the job is complete.

Pat Aprea is a very nice guy and very congenial to work with. He came to the house, assessed the work we wanted done, and provided an estimate within a couple of days. He worked us into his schedule and began the work within a week or two. He created a payment schedule that included a small down payment then several progress payments based on completing actual units of the work we agreed on (e.g., Payment 1 when siding finished, Payment 2 when pressure washing and painting prep done, Payment 3 when windows and doors replaced, Payment 4 when painting completed, etc.) Then left a $1000 payment at the end so that we could make sure that all work was completed and odds and ends tied up before making the final payment. He and his crew were pleasant to work with, kept in touch about scheduling and other matters, and did really nice work. When they were finished the house looked great and I knew the job was well done.
