Express Yourself Paint

Interior Painting, Exterior Painting, Pressure Washing,

About us

We were established in 2006 through a lot of sweat, tears and 80-hour work weeks, like most small businesses. I left my cushy upper management job in corporate to take over the great business my wife had started. She had decided to make our home a happier place by learning to paint faux finishes through our home like marbled ceilings and a brick painted patio. Then the neighbors wanted them, their friends and so forth. The name "Express Yourself Paint" came from customer's expressing their unique character through faux finishes. We started out in an eight-foot utility trailer with the forty-foot ladders hanging out to infinity with red flags tied to them and a used spray gun. We looked more like the Red Neck Painters of Raleigh. Thanks to all those trusting souls who allowed us to paint for them in those early days! We came from humble beginnings, but we wanted to create a different kind of painting company. A company that is high performance, uses modern technology for communicating and scheduling making for a more satisfied customer experience while still applying paint the old fashion way...brushes, rollers and sprayers. Our desire to be different has resulted in us becoming the largest and most successful repaint company in the Triangle. All that said, we still trip over our own feet sometimes and as of yet have not discovered how to be perfect. Give us a try and we will most definitely put our best foot forward for you. We can't leave the light on for you because we are at your home painting, but we will definitely bring all the paint and the fixings. Our sincere wish for you is to experience, "The Power of Paint!"

The painters we had , Core 1, were excellent. They surveyed the job, took notes, got the supplies, listened to my concerns and fixed the problems. They used great products and took pride in their work. They asked me to inspect and were gracious about any questions or places I asked them to touch up. ( Only two little ones ) ( I am a bit of perfectionist and they are too )
Description of Work: We needed repairs and painting of our woodwork and walls on the first and second floor of our house. We also had one bedroom painted and ceilings painted.

Multiple repairs were invisible! Painted several rooms nicely in a day. Painters worked fast and cleaned up well. Estimate was clear and provided in writing. Office staff and estimator were easy to reach and communicated well. One small touch up was needed due to lack of lighting in one room. Company came out and fixed with no complaint. Happy with the quick, clean job.

Everything was done as promised. The crew did great work. They were always on time and explained each step in the process. The crew’s leader, David, was very easy to work with and always asked if their work was what we expected.

Crew was prompt and arrived when they said they would. prepped room and stairs and applied first coat of paint to all walls before noon. Took lunch and returned to apply second coat and cleaned up and left by 3:30PM. I did not notice that they had touched the ceiling at the top at the fireplace 24 feet up in the family room until a week later. When I informed Brian about it and showed him the 2 foot spot that the roller touched he said he would see what he could do. One week later I got a call from their scheduler saying that they could schedule me and it would be a $99 trip charge. Their work was good and done quickly but not what I would call good customer service on a complaint that their crew caused.

The painter was done in 6 hours, he had the garage all cleaned up. He told me that he didn't want to stay and sit waiting for it to dry. He told me that he would take it up with Brit Roberts regarding the 2 hours he owned me. I got an e-mail from them stating to finish the work, I owed them another $400 to come back. Since then, it's 3 months, all the new tape is separating again and the ceiling re-cracked. I have tried to contact them 3 times, and no one is returning my call. This was the very first time I used Angies List.

The bathroom, they did an horrendous job. The bedroom was fine and the deck they did a terrible job. They didn't put plastic over furniture. The bath was a remodel so it was brand new and they put marks on a toilet seat which they did replace. The sales people were professional the painters weren't. They just weren't careful they were caress.

Express Yourself Paint did an excellent job with our project. The sales representative was punctual, listened carefully to what we wanted, and submitted a detailed estimate of all work to be done. He even let us add details later without any objection or raising the price. The painters were punctual, amiable and careful to protect the floors and furniture. They helped move furniture and wall hangings beyond what they were expected or required to do. We could find no fault with the end result. It is beautiful. No complaints. Much better than we'd expected, in fact. The old paneling in the den turned out beautifully -- way better than we'd thought possible -- with colors looking just like we'd envisioned.
Description of Work: Paint walls, doors, ceilings, & trim in den, hall, & bedroom. The den walls require special attention since there are paneling (50+ years old). Paint ceiling in additional bedroom. Repair gaping hole (from water damage) & paint ceiling in utility room. Pressure wash the entire house exterior, including windows.

ok. There was no confirmation call or respond to email until after the worker showed up. He arrived without any basic materials ( tape, rollers...) and left to find a Sherwin WIlliams although Lowe's is a mile a way. He returned 45 minutes later and took a brief lunch break. We paid for 8 hours of work. He left early - at 4:30 and we thought he was done. He never finished the job and left the bedroom doors and window trim unfinished. I assumed the company would follow up but never heard from them. The paint looks good and the color change was successful, but there are flecks of something gritty all over so I suspect the wall wasn't cleaned first.

Jeromy from Express Yourself arrived on time. He had a positive attitude and went to work! He did a good job smoothing out the imperfections in the walls and ceiling. He made sure that we were completely satisfied with all the painting before he left.
Description of Work: We hired Express Yourself to paint a spare bedroom's walls (2 coats), trim including 2 windows and 2 doors, and the ceiling. The room had had dark red walls with lots of drips and painted-over gouges. Even though we repaired and painted the walls with primer, they still looked terrible. In addition, the ceiling needed to be sealed from a prior leak and to have nail pops repaired.

There was no extra charges. What I had them do was remove the popcorn ceiling from my bathroom. They didn't do everything that I was hoping would be done. They did remove the popcorn, sanded, and spackled it. The guy did not stay the entire 8 hours cause he did what he could do. It was going to take time for the spackling to dry before anything else could be done. I ended up doing the rest of the job myself.

I had a hole in my kitchen ceiling repaired, caused by previous water damage, and at the same time i had the popcorn ceiling removed, prepped, and painted. I purchased the 199$/8 hours, deal off of here and set up a time to go over the work estimate. After the estimate session it was clear that this job would take more than the allotted time i had purchased. Unfortunately this was my mistake in underestimating the level of work. So I volunteered to take a day off of work and assist the painter who came to do the work. No supplies were provided and i had to do all the setup work, (masking everything off and covering the walls of the room) no big deal. The painter was helpful in teaching me how to do everything, and i learned a lot. I was grateful for the learning and working experience. It was an extremely messy and tiring job, but unfortunately we ran out of time to complete the job, so i had to pay an additional 200 some odd to have him come out and finish the job. Overall it was an enjoyable learning experience and the total cost of everything including supplies came out to about 450 which was still less than the quote the other person gave me as an estimate for the whole job. My only complaints are that they are hard to get in touch with, as i could never reach anyone on the phone and kept having to leave voice mails and would get a call back after about a day. Also after the job was complete i can still see a seam, which they want to charge me 75$ to fix, Hence the C in responsiveness.

It didn't go and I had to fight to get my money back
Description of Work: After purchasing the deal and scheduling the appointment, EYP changed the rules of the deal to suite them. Buyer beware... they do NOT honor the "normal business hours" for this deal. I was told after the fact that they would not do a holiday or a Saturday, and this was AFTER they confirmed my appointment for Memorial Day but then canceled the week before. They claimed they did everything they could to work with me but that was not even close to true. I will never ever do business with this "family owned company". I thought that would to their benefit, but I learned the hard way that that's not exactly a selling point. Lastly, not once was I called by my actual name. I was called by versions of my name (several versions) but one time I was referred to as Jeanie. That's nothing even close to my name. I understand one slip up, but after playing phone tag, every voicemail referred to me in a different name. They might want to work on that. It felt like I was just a number. Never again!

Response from Express Yourself Paint
We are sorry to hear this customer is unsatisfied with our company. Our "normal business hours are Monday through Friday 9-5. We did not state we would work Holidays or weekends in the coupon. Our scheduler did make an error and scheduled her job for Memorial Day. As soon as the scheduler realized this, we tried to call and email the customer weeks before the job to let her know we could not do it that day and we would be happy to reschedule for a different date. We did attempt to reach her numerous times via email and also left voicemail(when voicemail was not full). We did not hear from her via email or phone for a couple weeks. The customer would not allow painters in her house without her there. She also said she was unavailable Monday through Friday so that is why we were unable to meet her request. Angie's List did refund her money.

From the estimate to the painting, EYP was very professional and very thorough in making sure I understood what they were going to do and how they would go about it. Their recommendations were great and their attention to detail was superb. My wife Carol and myself are very pleased with the outcome and feel the price was reasonable as well as all the people involved wonderful to work with.
Description of Work: I have a home theater room that was undergoing some modifications and needed to have some patch work and repainting done once the remodel was completed. This room had a rather complicated previous paint job and I wanted it followed as well as to change the color in parts of the room. I also had some high traffic areas in my home needing repainting and finally I wanted to have my deck repainted and waterproofed.

First time hiring someone for interior painting and EYP came highly recommended. Excellent experience, from strart to finish, but I felt the price was on the high side. I probably would have done it myself had it not been for the Angie's List discount (full price: $468.74, after discount: $350). My stairwell is pretty small (two coats using just over a gallon of paint), so the painters were in and out in a few hours. It was a humid day, so they had to take a longer than anticipated break between coats.

Great. We got a double crew the first day so the job was completed in two days rather the three anticipated

We had high hopes for EYP, given all of the positive reviews. Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t so great. We had a number of issues: Our property was not protected in several areas (vinyl floors, wall switches, shutters, marble in front of the fireplace, and many electrical outlets all had paint splatter). One dresser had a spot of paint splatter as well. See pics. I pointed out some anchors the first day and told the lead painter those were to be left in place. They weren’t. One was a set of anchors for our vertical blinds leading from the kitchen to a porch. My wife and I had to spend time re-measuring, re-marking, and installing four sets of anchors because of this. There was poor/minimal paint coverage in several areas. The first walk through (on the last day) was not thorough. The lead painter and another man arrived that morning and said they’d need about 3 hours to wrap things up. Before I knew it, the lead painter was coming to my office telling me he’s ready to do the walkthrough. That was probably an hour after they arrived. I pointed out several things my wife and I noticed the night before and they corrected those as we walked through. However, when my wife and I had more time on the weekend to really scrutinize the work, we found many areas that still needed touching up. Two small areas had to be patched a couple of times because they weren’t adequately patched the first time. We found long hair in the paint in at least 5 spots. The cleanup was insufficient. There was dust in many places from sanding the “mud” they used to patch areas. There was also debris found behind fridge. They didn’t cover one section of counters the first day. I had to tell them to cover them. We were not able to put our furniture back for about 5 days because they had to come back and fix many issues. They failed to notify me that the toilet seat had been broken. Since we spent over $2000 with them, we had the opportunity to call them back for a “final” final walk-through within ten days. We took advantage of this and even requested that the owner come see all of the issues. He did come out, but as I walked him through the house and pointed out the issues, his comment was basically “uh huh, I see that” or words to that effect. The way he reacted, it was like he wasn’t surprised at all to see all of the issues I was pointing out to him (paint splotches on the ceiling, lines along the baseboard that weren’t even remotely clean and straight, patchy areas, paint splatter, etc.). He offered to buy us lunch at our favorite restaurant, but that’s not what we wanted. Given that we had to redo all of the anchors to rehang the vertical blinds and I had to take off two hours of work to meet with them on the final walk-through, I suggested he compensate us some money instead. I brought this up as he left that day and asked him to think about it. I never heard back from him, so I wrote him six days ago asking him to reimburse us just $100. I haven’t heard from him to this day. Very disappointed on how this was handled. After everything had been cleaned and touched up, the paint job looked ok, but I don’t think it was worth $3000. I will say that the leader painter did do a very good job managing the entire group, directing what needed to be done, being "vocal" when he needed to be when something wasn't done properly, and was thorough getting areas touched up during the final walk through. I think our experience, unfortunately, is what one should expect when hiring a painting company. The owner himself said it takes about nine guys to find one good painter. I think the turnover is pretty high and you never really know what kind of paint crew you’re going to get. The owner told me two of the painters who painted our house were new and one (maybe both) had been fired. I’m not here to train a painting crew. I want an experienced team in my house, especially when spending $3000. We’ll be looking elsewhere next time.
Description of Work: We needed most of the first floor painted and some wall paper removed in the kitchen and guest bath. Most of the house was painted with a single color, with two walls painted another color.

Excellence in service with "Express Yourself Paint" from start to finish. Miss Tracy scheduled estimate and work appointments; she couldn't have been friendlier. Then Brit came onsite to review paint/repair requests. The knowledge he proferred on best solutions and costing options were in depth; the formal written quote was the most detailed project spec I have seen; left nothing to guess at. On day of project start, Jason walked through the house to confirm agreement and make final suggestions on paint texture and such. The guys were in/out within 2-days and I couldn't be more pleased with the result of their hard work. Very professional job at a very competitive price. I will call them for paint projects st my house.

Not good. Typical bait and switch. Do not expect to actually pay the advertised price for any of their specials. The repair estimate for the extra items seemed reasonable but the work was not up to par. The ceiling looked awful. Streaking with yellow and the popcorn was still uneven. I asked about their $199.00 popcorn ceiling smoothing special early which was also advertised on Angies List and I was given a non-sense explanation as to why that would not apply and when I suggested that was false advertising it was removed from the website the next day. Also, do NOT hit reply on any of their emails. They will come back to you 3 days later as undeliverable and you could be stuck with the wrong work to be done. Bad communication between departments as well. Everyone calling and emailing me with the same questions. Just went to the house to see the work and I wish I hadn't. Not good at all. Paint and stripped finish on the living room wood floor and new laminate floors in both bathrooms. Also paint on the windows and paint footprints on the carpeting. The piano which was the only furniture left in the house must have been used as a work station. The top is completely ruined. The trim on the back door which they said they could repaint looks horrible, not even near looking acceptable or covered properly. That will have to be completely redone. They used a slightly different shade of gray in the upstairs bathroom and it now looks like a rainbow of purple and green swirls. The popcorn ceiling which Brit told me would look like new was a mess of yellow streaks. So the original $1400.00 paint job came to $2400.00 with the extra repairs and "touch ups" and then to fix the streaky ceiling they charged me an extra $150.00 (for their own shoddy work!.) It all came to a total of $2515.00. After walking through the house I feel like I should take them to small claims court. It's going to cost even more to fix the mess they left behind.
Description of Work: I called for the Angies List moving special for approx. $1400.00 for 1500 sq. ft.o paint my entire house interior which is 1517 sq. ft.. We also asked if they could repair and repaint the popcorn ceiling in the living room and kitchen (more on that later). Brit said he would make it look new again and they would also do some touching up and repair work around a back door and 2 upstairs windows.

Response from Express Yourself Paint
We are disappointed that this customer is not satisfied with the work that was done in their home. We strive to give the best service and quality of work possible to all of our customers and would like to clarify the following. 1) Our Angie's List $199 Deal is for 8 hours of labor, and may include popcorn ceiling removal. However, this job was beyond the scope of this deal and the customer did not purchase it. We spent 81 hours on this project. 2) Our Angie's List $1300 Deal is for one coat/one color walls/baseboard coverage on a 1500sq/ft (Or less) home. In this particular home we painted walls, trim, doors, primed, did repairs, and painted ceilings. This job was beyond the scope of this deal and the customer did not purchase it. 3) There was no "Bait and switch," nor does EYP have the power to remove these deals, Angie's List has to do it. The $1300 Deal is still up and available as of 3/17/2017. 4) There was additional oil priming recommended by EYP. -Ceilings: When latex paint was applied straight to ceilings a yellow stain came through. This is an indication of previous smoke and/or gas damage. We have no way of seeing this with the naked eye. EYP could not have reasonably known this would occur. This is not a workmanship problem, it is a stain problem with the customers ceiling. -Walls: Before the technician applied the paint, they noticed significant mildew growth in the walls of multiple rooms. EYP recommended a coat of oil primer before paint application. Both the ceiling and walls were quoted and approve by the homeowner. EYP did this work at cost. 5) The paint in the bathroom that doesn't match was supplied by the customer. EYP informed the customer it did not match. EYP recommended painting the entire wall and the customer declined and asked that only quoted drywall repair be touched up. 6) The trim on the back door was painted one coat and the paint was provided by the customer. 7) EYP performed 2 complete walk throughs with the customer's husband. He approved and signed off on the invoice. Job was completed and paid for. 8) Customer called our office 2 weeks after completion, furious, threatening to sue EYP and then hung-up. Since then we have tried to reach out to said customer multiple times and schedule a time to address their issues, but have had no response. 9) EYP's estimates clearly state that the customer must not respond to the estimate directly, but that they need to contact their sales representative. Whose information is also listed on the estimate. 10) Communication. This customer made 10 revisions to their work scope; all of which were updated by the sale representative and resent to the customer. 11) Responsiveness. The ceiling issue was brought to the customers attention on a Tuesday, EYP had finished and was cleaning up on Saturday when customer decided to add additional work to ceilings. EYP recovered all walls, floors and furniture, when on a supply run, and stayed until 7:30pm on a Saturday to finish their project.
