Express Yourself Paint

Interior Painting, Exterior Painting, Pressure Washing,

About us

We were established in 2006 through a lot of sweat, tears and 80-hour work weeks, like most small businesses. I left my cushy upper management job in corporate to take over the great business my wife had started. She had decided to make our home a happier place by learning to paint faux finishes through our home like marbled ceilings and a brick painted patio. Then the neighbors wanted them, their friends and so forth. The name "Express Yourself Paint" came from customer's expressing their unique character through faux finishes. We started out in an eight-foot utility trailer with the forty-foot ladders hanging out to infinity with red flags tied to them and a used spray gun. We looked more like the Red Neck Painters of Raleigh. Thanks to all those trusting souls who allowed us to paint for them in those early days! We came from humble beginnings, but we wanted to create a different kind of painting company. A company that is high performance, uses modern technology for communicating and scheduling making for a more satisfied customer experience while still applying paint the old fashion way...brushes, rollers and sprayers. Our desire to be different has resulted in us becoming the largest and most successful repaint company in the Triangle. All that said, we still trip over our own feet sometimes and as of yet have not discovered how to be perfect. Give us a try and we will most definitely put our best foot forward for you. We can't leave the light on for you because we are at your home painting, but we will definitely bring all the paint and the fixings. Our sincere wish for you is to experience, "The Power of Paint!"

Ok, did have to call them back to paint areas they missed and then stilled ended up fixing it myself to get it doen right. Not a bg issue but it was work I should not have had to have done.
Description of Work: Bought the deal on Angies list which was two painters for 8 hours. They put a finish coat on the hall two story that i alreay painted and painted the hall and laundry room. They were done in six hourse and left. In addition, I called them back to paint under the laundry sink which is an open area. They did come back and paint it but then still did not paint the other side of the are behind the sink. Quality was good and they are nice but you do have to watch and point things out and be very specific. I fixed the area myself when i painted my wifes office.

When David came out to our home to estimate we indicated that he was here to fix all seams, nail pops from the home settling, and the 8' ceilings in the kitchen, diningroom to be repaired from seams and nail pops. Then paint all the areas listed above. He was very courteous. He said we's have an estimate later that day. We did not receive a phone call or estimate from him until my husband called on Monday. He did get us the estimate on Monday. Included in his estimate was the wording repair all minor seems, cracks, and nail pops. Paint one coat Valspar paint (provided by us) in all areas as listed. Ceilings repair minor seems, nail pops, apply one coat of paint. then in ( ) the price for an addition coat if needed. We purchased paint with primer. The most expensive best quality paint we could find. We also bought enough extra paint to do the second coat if needed. that being said we had already used this paint in two of our bathrooms and one coat was all that was needed even on a dark color. The price was fair for the work we expected to do. A little higher than others but not too much and I liked David and felt his crew would do an outstanding job in my home and take care of my stuff as if it were their own. On the day they were scheduled to start the crew arrived on time but David did not accompany them as he said he would. I was told it would be 2 2 1/2 days to complete the project and there would be 3 maybe 4 people in my home to do the work. Only 2 people showed up. Jason and Ernesto. They began moving my stuff and putting plastic over my belonging. We discussed all the rooms and which colors went were. I showed him lots of seams that needed to be repaired, etc. Jason then informed me that he didn't know we had high ceilings and he would need to get a ladder because he was not prepared to do that type of work on this job. He also told me that seams aren't included in the estimate. I said they were and he looked at the estimate and said oh I guess they are. They got started prepping the walls in the downstairs. I did inform them that they didn't need to be careful with paint on the carpeted area down stairs because it was being replaced. But upstairs they needed to make sure to not get any on it as it was going to someone else when my new carpet was installed. So they did not drape the carpet downstairs. That was fine. At lunch time I informed them that I would be leaving and would be back in a few hours to check on the progress. David said his crews were professional so I was comfortable leaving while they were here. I stayed in a hotel because they needed to move all of our furniture in to the middle of all rooms and it really wasn't a good idea to stay in the home with paint fumes etc. I booked my initial room for 3 nights giving them an extra day just in case they weren't finished. Upon arriving back at my home they had finished one coat in the dining room and living room. The paint was not spread evenly, the cut in line looked like a toddler did it, and there were 50 or more nail pops and many seams still showing. Jason said this is what you get with one coat. What I want to do is a second coat so it will look more professional and fix some of these nail pops that I missed so it looks more professional. Being a painter myself, I felt like he should know better than to try to put off that work to "one coat". He was less than professional and I was not happy with the work already being preformed in my home. We called David immediately but he was not available to speak to so left a message that we needed to speak to him as soon as possible. In the morning of day 2 we had not heard from David so my husband sent him and email with pictures of the shoddy work. He called my husband immediately and said he would have it taken care of right away. When I got to my home there were now 6 people in my home. An additional crew as well as Jason and Ernesto. When I was sitting in my car getting ready to get out Jason came out of the house and slammed my front door.During their prep work they were to take down the blinds and the wall sconce, and brackets for some curtains. Instead they painted around them. Jason was the forman on this job in the beginning. I walked around looking at the additional repairs that were being performed and still saw several seams and nail pops. When I pointed them out I got an attitude. I then pointed out that the brackets needed to come down the holes patched and the wall sconce needed to come down. Ernesto said with a very snotty attitude I am not going to take those down I already painted around them just fine. Jason had instructed him that this is what he was to do. The other forman that was there helping out with his crew of 3 said no problem we will take them down. I left after that as I was very frustrated and not very happy with what I was seeing. My husband called David again since he was under the impression that he would come out and look at the job and talk to me about how this would be rectified. He asked him to meet me at 1 he said he could be at my home at 1:30 He didn't arrive until 3pm. We started to walk through my home and I was showing him the things that they had still missed many more nail pops )this is the second day of painting) He asked Jason to come downstairs and walk through with us. I pointed out the ceiling that had not been repaired. The lines where paint was still uneven. Jason was combative and kept saying that was there before. I didn't make it look like that. These were repairs he was supposed to take care of. While I was gone that morning Jason had painted the kitchen. He got blue paint on my cabinets. When I said there was paint on the cabinets he promptly came back with that was already there! I said it's BLUE! He then said I only painted over the other paint that was on the cabinets from the other painter. I then said what gives you the right to paint any part of my cabinets blue?? He then said you can't yell at me like that I'm not your child! ( I had larangitis so no yelling was even possible) So I told him him then he could get out of my house. He threw his brush up in the air and said fine I'll pack up all my stuff.Just before David had arrived I looked to see just how much paint had been wasted so far since every single wall still needed to be repaired and repainted . When I opened the 5 gln bucket I found a plastic drop cloth in my paint bucket that still had 2 maybe 3 gallons of paint in it!!!!! David helped him get all of his stuff and instructed the other guys in my home to start to clean up some of the mess. There was paint all over my hardwood floors, nothing was covered very well , paint was on my couch, electronics, including a brand new 50 in tv and surround sound speakers, etc. I needed to leave for an appointment but David had gone to the hardware store to get some supplies to clean up a bit. It looked like a bomb has gone off in my home. I was very happy to not have been sleeping there as it would have been impossible to get around anything and everything was covered in sheet rock dust. When I returned some progress had been made and there were lots of little pieces of tape for things to be fixed and repaired for a new crew in the morning.Wednesday morning ( day 3) Brandon, Chris, and Ernesto arrived early to start prepping the walls again. I went through my home with Brandon and we discussed everything to be done. I asked for a realistic amount of time to get the job done and he indicated 3 days should be enough. So I booked yet another hotel for 3 more nights. Brandon, Chris, and Ernesto worked diligently on Wednesday to get all the repairs made and the walls prepped for painting on Thursday, Because of prior engagements Brandon but Chris and Ernesto painted all day. They made progress and looked as though they would be on target for the Friday date. On Friday Ernesto had a family emergency out of state and had to leave. That left Chris, one person, to complete the rest of the job. He worked late but just could not get it finished. So again, I needed to extend my stay in a hotel. On Monday Chris came back (they don't work weekends requiring me to stay in the hotel until Monday) he worked to get the rest of the job completed and was in my home until almost 5 pm. He was alone so it was impossible for him to move all of my stuff back to its original place. My home was left in shambles. I believe this is Davids fault, He did not come by to check the job ever again. He dropped off paint twice. He called my husband for payment of the job immediately after they left for more money That included extra paint and he put in what the repairs to seams that he said were not minor would have cost us since he was losing that money because he didn't include those ones in his estimate. All the seams were ones that we specifically asked to be in the estimate as that was the main reason they were there. We agreed to pay for half of the second coat in a few rooms additional to the original estimate even though we had to stay in a hotel an additional 4 nights costing me much more than his seam repairs. When we started to move our own belongings we noticed that our comforter was ruined. The bed supports were all bent and breaking at a 45dg angle. book case was broken. and there was missed trim and my fireplace surround was not painted. The next day when the crpt inst came I found out they had gotten paint on all the carpet upstairs! I called David about these things 2 weeks ago he said he would call me back and has not. I want him to at the very least reimburse the cost of my comforter. He should refund more of our money as the job was not completed and they left my home in shambles covered in sheetrock dust that I am still cleaning up weeks later. I will never recommend them to anyone. If you do go with them ask for Brandon and Chris. The second crew of 4 was good as well but I can not remember their name. DO NOT let Jason in your home.

Response from Express Yourself Paint
The work scope agreed to for this project is as stated below: "Scope: Caulk all open seams, repair minor sheet rock blemishes such as nail pops, dings and minor tape separation, paint up to two coats on walls and one on trim as indicated below." Each room has the following verbiage. Below is an excerpt. "Hall (1 Coat Walls and Trim) $31 for second coat if desired." The contract stipulated that the customer provide the paint. Basically the customer had EYP quote 1 coat hoping everything would cover in 1 coat. Based on my experience I told them it was doubtful even using all the latest paint and primer in one that one coat would be sufficient. Thus for each room I quoted the cost for a second coat. Out of over a 1000 homes, this home was by far the most cluttered and difficult to work in. Admittedly, on day two when I arrived to review our progress there were items we needed to address. We had missed some of the nail pops in the ceiling and I had them all fixed and the ceiling repainted for example. I couldn't’t touch as is normal for flat white because the home owners mixed sheens. Thus, EYP purchased replacement paint and painted all the ceilings with a second coat free of charge. We also reworked some crooked corners from the previous sheet rocker and some uneven surfaces not included in the contract free of charge in an attempt to satisfy the customer. The largest source of contention was that the customer was adamant that we repair bulging sheet rock joints. As noted above, these are not minor in nature and require hours to repair. I had the sheet rock contractor spend approximately 16 hours doing nothing but repairing seams and in many cases reworking the previous sheet rock work. EYP performed $280 of work gratis. This also required many of the walls to be second coated. The customer said they would share in the expense of re coating some of the walls and in the end contributed $125.5 in labor but refused to pay for any portion of the paint EYP purchased for the second coats totaling $256.57. In net EYP did everything possible to satisfy this customer to the point of providing over $700 of additional labor and materials not included in the contract. The contract states the following: “Payment Terms – Payment due the day completed to customer’s satisfaction.” The project was completed with exception to final touch up on a Friday. One painter returned on Monday to do final touch up and was instructed to stay on the job site until everything was completed to the customer’s satisfaction so that payment could be collected. The owners had all weekend to review the work and had numerous additional “punch” items for the painter to address which he did. They even had the painter paint the inside of the sheet rock openings with trim white requiring 2 coats also not in the contract and performed for free. He stayed until the job was completed to their satisfaction and they called to have their credit card payment processed. The additional complaints sited to Angie’s List were approximately one week after our project was completed to the customer’s satisfaction and payment was processed. During that time, according to the information provided by the customer to EYP, additional contractors were to be in the home replacing carpet.

David was very helpful and tried to accomodate my schedule. He was very friendly. I had a small 2X2 hole on my kitchen ceiling drywall that my plumber cut open to access the leak. The drywall repair work was done well (patch work). The patch has to dry now, before sanding and painting work.

I phoned EYP. Mr. Roberts came to my home to inquire about my interest in the job in regards to colors, what rooms I wanted painted and repairs to walls. Within 24 hours an estimate was provided via email and via telephone and a job start date was scheduled as well as estimated finish date, both of which were as planned.
Description of Work: Repaired nail pops, primed walls and painted entire home with specified colors in a timely and professional manor. Employees were very friendly and communicated well with their plans for the days they were in my home. They assisted with moving heavy furniture and draped furniture well that wa still within the rooms that were being painted. Took extra precautions to prepare floors. I plan to do business with them again in the very near future!

These guys were awesome! David was a professional and provided a no-nonsense estimate, and the painters (Chris & Brandon) were absolutely fantastic. They took great care of our personal items and were very courteous. The quality of their work was great, and they went above and beyond to fix small drywall issues and ensure we were happy with the end result. I would ABSOLUTELY use them again and would recommend them to anyone.

We are very pleased to deal with David & Leigh Roberts, the Angie's Super Service Award Winning owners of Express Yourself Paint in the estimation, preparation, performance and follow up phases. The estimate was unusually detailed, including the particulars of paint ,which will allow us to do touch ups readily in the future. They provided the names of several prior customers and other support date. We considered the price attractive and are very pleased with the results of their work. David and Leigh were readily available during the work to answer the inevitable thought that occur as you paint your personal area. We were only asked for payment after the work was performed to our satisfaction. We recommend them highly and plan further work with them in the near future.
Description of Work: David and his staff painted our large living/dining area, down stairs bedroom and hallways and as well as the deck immediately outside this area. This quality job took three days with the whole first day spent in preparation of the areas to be painted, including putting down protective paper and taping to prevent spill/splatters, patching several spots in the walls and sealing areas in wood work and in molding. They were meticulous in this work, especially in the mowing of furniture including a piano. They then applied two coats to the wall. My wife was very pleased how they kept her informed of the progress each day and working with Mitch on the color selection. The deck required two additional worker, four in all to finish within the projected three days. they were equally attending to detail cleaning up, returning all furniture to its proper place and doing a thorough walk thru which included ratings of their performance. Mitch was very attentive to a few items that needed attention. He is a real asset to Express Yourself Painting. including facilitating estimated for some further work, which we have contracted for at this time.

Summary: Initial Crew were messy (paint over spray, did not put down plastic or shop vac mess) also had no real drywall skill (no tools...gun/screws). This crew was replaced w/ a more skilled drywall person. Once 2nd crew came on board the job went much more smoothly. David listened to the issues and worked to a solution that in the end was very pleasing. He also accomodated a color change. Only a couple of items remain ..... 1) removal of paing on screen 2) removal/replacement of paint from honeycomb blind I will report back as these items are addressed.
Description of Work: > Master Bath Drywall and Paint following previously removed wall paper. Job Scope .......... Master Bath and Master Bedroom ~52hrs estimated for the job. Garage paint was a straight up Big Deal package.

Express Yourself Paint company did a great job for me! David was very responsive to my phone calls and quick to come to my house for an estimate. He did a superb job of estimating how much paint I would need and how long the job would take. He even recommended a good place for me to buy the brand of paint I wanted. The painters did a super job and cleaned up completely afterward. My walls look wonderful!

The manager worked closely with us to choose a paint color, and after the paint dried and seemed different from what we had expected he came right over and corrected the issue. He discovered a problem with the formula and corrected it so that we were well pleased with the result. The painter was great as well, being efficient in his work, courteous, dilligent, and he paid great attention to detail. They offered a reasonable price and provided a good quality of work.

The painters arrived right on time and spent a lot of time carefully prepping the walls (spackled, cleaned, taped off, etc.) We were very impressed with their attention to detail and meticulous work, even before they started painting. They painted the walls, did a second coat, and even went over the trim and rails on the staircase. They did an absolutely beautiful, fantastic job. The area they worked on looks better than new, and we honestly couldn't be happier. It *looks* professionally done...very neat and clean. The painters were friendly, polite, helpful, and professional. They made sure to ask about what exactly we wanted, and they did just that. At the end of the day, their boss came over and looked over everything. They cleaned up the space when they were done. This is truly the best experience we've had with a company we found on Angie's List. They did absolutely everything right. We wouldn't hesitate to hire them again, would definitely recommend them to anyone, & wish we would have hired them to paint the other rooms we already had painted. Thanks so much!
Description of Work: We bought one of the deals offered through Angie's List. Express Yourself provided 2 painters for 1 day, so we had our stairwell and loft area painted.

Overall for painting, they were fabulous! The finished product was amazing. I showed Leigh a picture of an accent wall with an intricate striated metallic finish from the internet with no instructions on how it was accomplished. She matched it almost exactly! I also had her come over prior to our work day to help me pick out colors. She is very experienced and was able to help me pick out colors that would go with my current design and furniture. If you use their services, you should really consider a color consult, too. The dining room "faux" plaster finish was also amazing. I use the term "faux" in quotes because it's not exactly fake. They took plaster and pasted it all over the walls prior to painting. The result replicates the look of much more expensive venetian plaster, and ends up leaving a beautiful, textured finish. They also arrived early and cleaned up nicely before leaving. For the plaster repair, I'd give them only a "B". The first person they sent did not an adequate job, and we had to have another person come out to re-do all of his work. The second person did a good enough job, but I got the feeling that intricate plaster repair is not their specialty. I'm satisfied with the work, and David's response to our issue with the first person to come out was extremely professional. Overall, I would DEFINATELY hire them again, and CERTAINLY recommend them to others.
Description of Work: We hired Express Youself for two jobs: 1. Faux plaster finish in our formal dining room with paint and 2. Metallic accent wall in our foyer They also performed plaster repair on our cracking walls and provided a color consult to help me plan.

The crew showed up early and finished on time. There were a few spots that needed retouching and I was amazed at how responsive David was even though he'd already been paid for the job. He had someone out the next day to make sure I was happy. Outstanding! We felt his quote for the job was fair, his crew were all great, and they cleaned up afterwards. Best painting experience I've ever had and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: David's quote included inside walls/doors/trim painting along with drywall repair, some outside painting and minor wood repair, and the deck restained along with any necessary pressure washing.

It was a great experience from start to finish. Jeanie and Mike arrived 30 minutes early to set up and worked diligently all day long. In addition to the area I had requested to have painted, Jeanie offered to paint 2 additional hallways and all the trim work. They finished the area that I had originally hired them to paint and then continued on until it was time for them to leave. Jeanie is a great asset to this company... she is one of the hardest working and honest people I have ever met. Jeanie and Mike even took a few minutes to play with my golden retrievers. I have already scheduled a consultation with Leigh to have additional rooms of my house painted. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for high quality work at a reasonable price.

We played phone/email tag for a couple of days. Once we got to talk to each other everything went pretty smooth. David said it would take 2-3 days but to fix touch up problems it actually took 5 days.
Description of Work: They painted over wallpaper in my kitchen. They explained exactly how they would do the job and it did not vary from what I had read about painting over wallpaper. Very professional, although I had to get on them for not cleaning up after themselves very well. I am quite happy with the job they did.

The member was a pleasure to work for. Just want to let perspective customers know that there are risk involved in painting over wall paper. The major final touch up resulted from a seam that broke loose from all the moisture applied to the wall while painting, even after using oil primer to create a moisture barrier. Please discuss with us the pros and cons of painting over wall paper before making a final decision. Keep in mind that there may be additional touch ups not normally required so the cost for painting over wall paper is a little more.

They were prompt and willing to communicate with us after hours to select paint colors to ensure the job was done to our satisfaction. The paint looks good. I plan on using them again.

Painters, arrived on time. Performed all of painting required, and were able to even paint and touch up additional trim. They did a great job, and cleaned up.

Painters arrived on time, went right to work preparing the room, setting up equipment, etc. They were very professional and the work performed was excellent. They also moved the furniture and thoroughly cleaned the area upon completion. Extremely happy with the employees and the work they did.

Express Yourself Paint was wonderful. They responded to our inquiry quickly and scheduled the work within 2 weeks. The painters arrived on time, were extremely professional and nice and did a great job. We are very pleased with the company and the service and will definitely be using them again to paint our lower floor once we pick colors.
Description of Work: The painters completed 2 full bedrooms and one large bathroom (with a lot of angles and fixtures) plus an accent wall in another bedroom in one day.

David Roberts came out to see the work area and provide an estimate. He was professional, courteous and had some great ideas about color. I found him to be very knowledgable about his materials and the work needed. They began the job right away and the painters arrived promptly. The work was excellent (the lady painter was a real perfectionist!) and completed in a timely manner. When they finished, the cleanup was thorough and no spots or splatters were left behind. The trim lines were sharp and there were no thin patches on the wall to show the previous paint job underneath. I was billed upon completion and the leftover paint was stacked neatly in my garage. I thought they did an excellent job! I have since used them for lots of other jobs (mostly carpentry and exterior staining) and they have also done great interior work for my parents and in-laws. I have found them to be honest and very fair in their pricing in all projects. I would highly recommend them!
Description of Work: Priming and painting trim and walls in bedroom, priming and painting walls in huge bonus room. In both instances they were covering dark, jewel-toned paint with a pastel color.

There was some spotting that occurred to my siding from the power washing. When I pointed that out to the company, they backed up their guarantee and fixed the issue without charge. I was extremely impressed with their responsiveness and willingness to correct the problem.

Their interior painting crew was excellent, but the exterior crew left a lot to be desired. Both crews are made up of different team members who work exclusively in interior or exterior.
Description of Work: I’ve worked with them in the past. However, this year when I contacted them for additional work they failed to return my call. That left a bad taste in my mouth.

They did a wonderful job. They are a full service. It is a husband and a wife that own the company. They have several people that they work with. Everyone we met was very courteous. I thought that their price was very good for all the work that they did. It took a little over a week to get all of that done. They are easy to get in touch with. They also do excellent work. Their price was competitive.
Description of Work: I used the services of Express Yourself Paint for a number of jobs. They started on the 21st and they finished it today. They power washed the exterior, washed the roof, car porch, washed all the six decks and washed 23 exterior windows. They first gave me a paint color consultation and then they did the painting. They painted the decks, the front door, living room, kitchen, master bedroom, master bathroom and the ceilings as well. They did patch work. They had a carpenter who built a custom case to cover some hanging wires. They also took a doorway and made it into a framed entry way. They put in a new tiled backsplash in the kitchen. Then they did a staging consultation.
