Express Yourself Paint

Interior Painting, Exterior Painting, Pressure Washing,

About us

We were established in 2006 through a lot of sweat, tears and 80-hour work weeks, like most small businesses. I left my cushy upper management job in corporate to take over the great business my wife had started. She had decided to make our home a happier place by learning to paint faux finishes through our home like marbled ceilings and a brick painted patio. Then the neighbors wanted them, their friends and so forth. The name "Express Yourself Paint" came from customer's expressing their unique character through faux finishes. We started out in an eight-foot utility trailer with the forty-foot ladders hanging out to infinity with red flags tied to them and a used spray gun. We looked more like the Red Neck Painters of Raleigh. Thanks to all those trusting souls who allowed us to paint for them in those early days! We came from humble beginnings, but we wanted to create a different kind of painting company. A company that is high performance, uses modern technology for communicating and scheduling making for a more satisfied customer experience while still applying paint the old fashion way...brushes, rollers and sprayers. Our desire to be different has resulted in us becoming the largest and most successful repaint company in the Triangle. All that said, we still trip over our own feet sometimes and as of yet have not discovered how to be perfect. Give us a try and we will most definitely put our best foot forward for you. We can't leave the light on for you because we are at your home painting, but we will definitely bring all the paint and the fixings. Our sincere wish for you is to experience, "The Power of Paint!"

Overall, I was basically satisfied. They were punctual, and pleasant to work with. However I was not satisfied with several items. First, the price of the job was divided per room, which included paint .However the price of the paint and supplies were not itemized . It was estimated that the job was to take three days. When I asked if the job would take less time, would the price be lowered, I was disappointed that the price would be the same. The first day the painters came to my house, I asked them if they could help me take the curtains down, since I did not have someone to help me earlier. They said that they would take care of the cutains. When I came back after the painting was finished, I found the curtains piled up, in a major mess on the floor in a room that they were not painting. After the first walk through, some areas needed to be repainted and additional areas done. The " popcorn" ceiling in the bathroom was redone, but it still did not seem to improve. The lower portions of closet doors were redone, but they did not seem to improve. (I ended up painting them myself .) The living room ceiling was redone, since the initial brown water stain was now a large yellow spot. The spot disappeared after being repainted. However, I now found two living room walls spackled, apparently they had had a mishap( I wish I would have asked about what had actually happened.) They were soon repainted. The last items which were painted were two window frames and window sills. A month or so later I discovered they were painted with the wrong type of paint, flat instead of semi gloss. When I called Mr. Roberts and asked if his men could repaint the window frames and sills with the correct paint, he said that they ran out of the semi gloss paint, and that I should get a handyman to do the repainting! Finally, I discovered that the two large bathroom mirrors, which were to be removed from the walls (to have wallpaper taken down from behind them) were not. Despite the fact that not everything was done "up to par", Mr. Roberts was helpful by recommending a couple of handymen, one of which I hired to do a number of jobs at my townhouse.
Description of Work: Removal of wallpaper from two bathrooms and kitchen. Painting of those two bathrooms, kitchen, two bedrooms and living room. Painting of several ceilings.Painting of dining room trim.

Connie from EYP came and did the original quoting. I found her very helpful and kind to work with. She helped us choose paint colors, and we continue to be very pleased with the choices. The appointment was scheduled quickly and the two painters who arrived were very courteous and professional. They were very careful and did not make a mess considering the size, height and area of the foyer. They painted these areas very fast and with good quality, making sure I inspected it when it was done. Because they had some remaining time, they offered to help put a second coat of paint some molding in a recently painted bathroom. I am very pleased with the service all around and would use them again. I also feel it was a great deal for the quality and speed of the work.
Description of Work: Quoted and performed the interior painting for our foyer, upstairs hallway, living room and trimmed the den.

I had to contact the company on two occasions because I did not receive a response to my initial request about the offer. When I spoke with the owner he was very courteous and immediately came out to look at the rooms I needed to have painted. We scheduled the job to be done three weeks later. Two courteous painters arrived on time and began the job. They were unaware of the amount of paint colors being used and didn't have enough rollers. One of the painters had to leave to get more rollers. While they did a great job, it took a long time for them to complete the first two rooms. One of the painters had to leave an hour early to pick up his child. While the work did not get done in 8 hours, which was the deal, the owner arranged to have the painters come back and finish the job which they did.
Description of Work: Express Yourself Paint painted two bedrooms, including casings, a hallway, down the stairs, under the breakfast bar and the wall near the garage entrance.

I bought an Angie's List deal with this company. They had a very nice lady come review the project and she told me all the things I needed to get fixed before they could paint. She was very thorough and helpful. The painting went fairly well however I did need to monitor that all the little details were being taken care of. If you ask or remind them to take care of something, they will do it. The work was fast but the main guy was not always on time. We didn't pay a lot and it was a good value. I would use them again.

please see above. It went very poorly and I was not happy with an incomplete job.
Description of Work: I had wanted to get 2 rooms and a hallway painted, I also wanted a stairwell painted. I was willing to pay more if it took longer, but I could not get them to even do the original work. I had to finish painting my family room myself even after they came back to do the trim. They did not paint trim on my windows and my whole fireplace was left for me to paint, They cancelled on my original scheduled work day after I took the day off work. When they finally came the next day, the one worker was 2-3 hours late. I have to say what they painted was done well and they cleaned up after their work. The estimator was poor and did not have a clue how long it would take to do this paint job.

Great response time for our Big Deal purchase. David Roberts actually came out in advance to help scope our project and set expectations. He helped us determine the quantity of paint to purchase, as well as advised on the type. The painters arrived on time, prepped and painted with great precision. They did a very nice job and we have since used this company for additional projects. It was great to have the project expectations set in advance, since the deal was for a set amount of time and it can be hard for us non-professionals to estimate what can be done during that timeframe. Highly and enthusiastically recommend this company!

We bought the paint, they came in and made it look beautiful- in no time at all (5 hours). They did not paint behind the toilet, however (although I just noticed that several months later). They couldn't reach it with their sprayer, I guess. I would use them again.

I was blown away with the service. First I paid extra to have a consultant come over and help me select colors for the room and design the paint scheme. I had found a painting technique I wanted used, and they were more than willing to accommodate my request. They also helped me pick out the paint and gave me guidance on how much to buy. The work was done well within the time I purchased (they gave me an estimate up front to make sure I didn't go over my coupon). They were meticulously clean when they worked and put down thick protectors for the furniture and floor. I would definitely use them again.

The experience went very well. The owner contacted me and came out for a preview. Very professional and prepared the paperwork on a laptop and emailed it to me immediately. The painters were on time and did an excellent job. They prepped, painted and then cleaned up. No problems. Very happy with our experience.

The painters arrived just a few minutes late (about 8:40 AM and left at 4 PM)and then proceeded to spend the next 30-40 minutes cleaning their buckets and preparing to paint (things that should have been done prior to arrival). When they worked, they did good work covering the halls, living room and kitchen with paint (I had already primed the walls before they arrived). However, they took a lot of mini breaks during the course of the day. I fully anticipated 8 hours of labor from each painter (16 total) as constituting a "days worth." All told, with the numerous breaks and earlier than expected departure, the total amount of labor for the two was about 12 hours. The additional 4 hours would have saved me from having to re-do several areas where they did not apply enough paint...or missed entirely. All in all, I was little disappointed...something that might have been avoided had they provided 16 hours of paint time vs 12.
Description of Work: I purchased a coupon for $349 for 2 painters for a day. The total experience was average. The two men who arrived were to spend the day painting my hallway, kitchen and living room.

This will be a long review so in summary based on our experience: - only believe exactly what is on paper and ignore any verbal promises made - if issues arise, don't expect to work through this with David as a valued customer. We were treated as a problem to be shut down not as a customer to be satisfied. We purchased an Angie's list coupon for two painters for a day (16 man hours) to have an average size bedroom painted. This seemed reasonable given our previous experience with professional painters. David visited and quoted 22.9 man hours in writing to complete the job. However in presenting the quote he verbally said that the quote was on the basis of average painters and his painters were well above average and typically completed jobs faster than estimated. He told a story about a customer who wrote a negative review because they finished up faster than quoted. The week before the scheduled start-date I had to schedule an international business trip for the following week. My wife tried to have the date changed but they said it was too late. The day arrived and it was raining. The painters worked through the day but said that everything was drying slowly due to the humidity. However, they also said that there was no way that they could have finished the job in a day even on a clear day. They said David was not a painter and frequently overpromised. At the end of the day there was still one coat lacking on three walls and the ceiling and two coats on one wall. They were very embarrassed to leave the room in that state and my son's room full of our daughter's furniture. My wife offered a gratuity because they had worked hard and apologized. They refused the tip a few times because of the state of our house but my wife insisted. My wife asked if they would be able to fit more time in later in the week to finish the job and the lead said that he would call David as soon as they left and ask him to call her. That evening I called back home and had to speak with my wife and kids who were all crying because the job wasn't finished and neither of the bedrooms could be used. My wife was facing spending the rest of the week with the kids sleeping with her in our room. I spoke to her again at the end of the next day and she hadn't heard anything from David. So I sent him this email: "David, I understand from [my wife] the upstairs of our house is an uninhabitable shambles and the painters, who worked very hard, were very embarrassed to leave the job in that condition. I don't believe anyone could think that leaving 1 or 2 coats on every wall and ceiling remaining to complete the job constitutes "done or nearly done" as you promised [my wife]. I am out of the country this week. [My wife] was surprised you didn't call today. Can you please call me tomorrow on 919.XXX.XXX so we can discuss this? Thanks' Remember, I was 4,000 miles away and dealing with a very unhappy family back home but I was trying to be restrained in my email, asking him to call me so we could work to resolve the problem. Another day passed with no call or email. Finally the next day I got an email from David that started like this "I am truly disappointed in the tone of this mail. Any communication I made setting expectations was in good faith." The email then went on for 500 words lecturing me on how the job was done and standards of painting project management, the humidity and how they had completed 76% of the job and the quote was for 86% of the job. It then ended like this " Had someone simply requested that we try to schedule in the remaining work I would have jumped through hoops to do so. However, based on EYP fully meeting our obligation on your coupon and the tone of your request below, I suggest that you find someone else to complete the room or finish it yourself as was originally communicated to me." Of course my wife had requested from the painters that David call her to schedule more time so that the kids would have somewhere to sleep and so I wouldn't have to spend the following weekend completing the job. And my email requested that he call me to discuss. What he chose to do was take offense at my email, lecture me and then fire me as a customer while ignoring the two requests for communication that we had made. What seems clear to me is that he decided he wasn't going to get enough money out of us for completing the job so he found an excuse (the "disappointing tone" of my email) to not come back and to blame it on me. His email was written up like an Angie's List defense (which he'll no doubt quote from in response to this). It took me all day Saturday and Sunday but I finished the job. I've done a fair bit of painting in fixing up a couple houses. The quality of the work done by the painters wasn't nearly as good as I could do myself. In their defense they were trying to get as much done as possible. It would be worth checking out other reviews to see what the quality of the work is. This coupon was no deal.
Description of Work: Purchased two painters for a day (16 hours) coupon to paint an average size bedroom. David quoted. Painters performed plaster repair, priming four walls, 1 coat on 3 walls and ceiling. One wall unpainted at the end of 16 hours. See below for issues with getting job completed.

Service included having owner come out to review what we wanted painted and to set expectations. Overall we where please with the amount of painting which could get done. Only issue was owner indicated the trim would not need to be taped which we wanted to do in advance to maximize actually painting time. The 2 painters end up taping anyways. On the day of service the painters arrive at ~8AM working basically non-stop until ~4pm. They got done what was expected. Only draw back is they had a few small spots they missed which we did not catch before they left.

They power washed my solid wood custom door with bleach, which was not requested on my part and is now damaged. When working on the windows they scratched over 50 windows. It has been a complete nightmare. The owner does not keep his appointments. He has not replied to my phone calls and emails. He has dragged his feet for the past two months. When giving the opportunity to fix the scratches on the window he actually made is worse. Now I have a broken widow with many other widow with deep scratches. It has been two months and I am still dealing with this nightmare. Please be extremely smart and not use this company unless you are prepared to spend thousands of dollars in headaches.

The final product turned out good, hence the 'B' rating for quality. But the experience could have been better. We really did not have a lot to do to our house, it was a freshening up of the house to get ready for sale. I expect it should not have take a team of two people more than 10 hours to complete. However overall it took 5 days to complete which started to be a concern because of the bad weather coming in from Hurricane Sandy and our house was due to go on the market 6 days from the original estimate of time. The painters came on time the first day to power wash and said they would return in the afternoon to start painting allowing time for the house to dry. They did not come back until early evening. They put in two hours and left saying they would return the next day. Well the next day turned into 3 days later, a Friday (3 days before my house was to be listed and the beginning the rainy weather). They promised me they would come out at 1pm that day (several times they assured me). They didn't show up until 6:30 PM at night to finish the majority of work! It was dark. they were doing work with a flashlight. The painted my front door and put on so much paint it dripped down to our threshold and my son didn't realize it when he came home that night and traipsed paint up our carpet on the stairs. I was very upset. Then they promised to finish the job on Saturday and asked me the earliest they could come out. I told them 8 AM. They never showed up in the morning and didn't come til 1 PM. By this time, I got David the owner on the phone (after several emails over the course of this project) and asked him to please come out to the job site and talk to me. Thankfully we were able to get the paint out of our carpet on the stairwell. Once the guys did get out they finished the job and did a satisfactory job. Scott and his team of painters are good guys, and they work extremely hard. They were just too overbooked. I realize they had some last minute emergencies but I felt they could have done much better scheduling and communicating to us. Considering I also used two other Angie's List contractors to do tile work and landscaping and both were outstanding, I was very disappointed in this experience. I really hate to leave this type of a review, but I use Angie's list religiously and rely on accurate reviews in choosing my contractors. In this case, it didn't work out well. But 2 out of 3 times it has worked out great.
Description of Work: We requested a freshening up of our exterior of our home before our house was listed. We basically wanted to focus on the white trim areas, power wash the whole house, such as our window sills painted, front porch and rails, front door painted, garage door, and to replace a rotten fascia board over the garage with fiber cement and have that painted.

The owner of the business came by for an estimate of what was to be done. I got the paints he suggested. Chris and Brandon showed up on time and were very professional. I had only planned to have the walls painted, but at the last minute I changed mind and decided to have the ceilings and the trim painted white. The painters were very accommodating, and had no problem with my last minute decision. All went well, the home is older and rental that we just acquired this year. Unfortunately the previous owner neglected to repair or do simple maintenance. When the guys finished it really did look like a new home!!!! I am very pleased with the whole experience.

They sent a competent, but recently hired estimator out to estimate the job and we came away from the visit feeling confident that we could come in at or slightly above the cost of the Special. The estimate that came back indicated that they were recommending a second coat and that they obviously didn't think the job could be finished in one day. They itemized separate amounts for the kitchen, dining, room and stairway well in excess ofan additional $500 + paint. They also requested that we use only premium paint (Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore only. We ultimately used Sherwin-Williams; eight gallons of paint cost about $200 on sale). We called to ask for a re-evaluation of the costs and settled on an additional $481, which we still felt was too steep, since what were to receive amounted to "2 painters for 2 days," but decided to go ahead because we had a hard deadline for finishing the job. Aside from the price--which we did agree to--we were very satisfied with theresult. The two painters were excellent, a pleasure to have in the house for both two- and four-legged occupants, and were extremely careful with the furniture, mirrors, and glassware.. The estimated paint requirements were spot-on and the negotiations over price were business-like and not disagreeable. Our painters finished two coats in exactly 2 days, so I think the lesson we learned is that you get what you pay for and you must be prepared to pay for what you get.
Description of Work: We bought the Angie's List "$349 for 2 painters for a day" Specia from Express Yourself Painting painted over our developer's grade beige open-plan first floor (@ 800 sq. feet) with a darker shade of eggshell finish paint., Areas included the foyer, great room, kitchen, stairway to second floor, and dining room. The job included no wainscoting or other trim, but did include painting between existing molding in main area. There was minimal need for preparation. The painters moved furniure, mirrors, and a piano using protective sliders and swept the area when finished on the second day.
