Great! We just bought the house and wanted to install skylights in rooms that had no windows. Jim gave us estimates with solar power ones. It was more than what we wanted to spend. We asked for quotes for fixed with shades. He scheduled to have them installed but unfortunately rain was forecasted and we moved the date later in the week. Also, they worked on the second floor in the heat which our heat pump was having issues. The work was great and we love the skylights. They make a big difference. We are already planning to have more installed.

Jim immediately diagnosed the real problem, made a temporary repair, and returned to properly flash the skylight, check for permanent water damage (fortunately, none), replaced a stack collar that was disintegrating, and re-shingled the area of the leak. the following day, there was a heavy rainstorm. No leaks.

I have actually waited 14 months since Jim did the work before writing the review--it may seem odd to do that, but I wanted to experience the skylight through all the seasons and all weather conditions before passing judgment. I can now say that it has performed flawlessly and that Jim's assurance that there would be no leaks was indeed accurate. So kudos to him--he's the only one who's been able to get the job done right (2 previous skylights both failed and leaked). His work was professional, thorough, and of very high quality. I'd use him again.

It went well. Jim had reflashed both of these existing skylights previously due to another leak. This time they had to be re-sealed along the glass. Over the last 5 or 6 yrs, Jim has replaced 8 of our original skylights (20 yrs old). Five of them were extremely large. He replaced them with pairs of Velux units. We have had no problems with any of the replacements that Jim has installed. I would recommend his quality of work to anyone.

He built a beautiful ramp. He was able to complete it in four days. It fits perfectly. The charge was extremely reasonable. I asked for something more than just a plywood ramp and he delivered. He was able to have it match the other wood in the room. He is very nice to work with and does great work as well.

Everything went very well. (see above)
Description of Work: Mr.Ellington came to inspect our three skylights, one of which we were sure needed to be replaced. He told us what was happening with that particular skylight and that it definitely needed to be replaced. The other two skylights he pronounced in fine condition. He gave us an estimate to install the skylight and repair the roof around the skylight. The estimate was fair. . After ordering and receiving the skylight, he was out at 7:30am the next morning. He charged exactly what he estimated! He was a very thoughtful, easy to work with gentleman. He was always prompt and courteous. We would definitely use him again.

They showed up on time and had the skylight installed on the first day. When they opened up the hole in the kitchen ceiling there were several wires that needed to be rerouted. They left while the electrical was rerouted and returned to finish up the framing and drywall. We did have one problem. The ladder they brought into the kitchen had a pointed roof attachment where the ladder's feet meet the floor. They did put down drop clothes but the point of the roof attachment put several small gouges in our kitchen hardwood floors. We are in the process of getting quotes to fix the floor and Ellington promised they would take care of the bill. Overall we are pleased with their work and would use them again.
Description of Work: We needed more light in our kitchen so we decided to add a skylight. We selected the VSE/M06 size skylight with the motorized open/close and a motorized blind via an included remote control. Ellington installed the skylight, framed in the opening, installed drywall and finished it to paint ready.

Short version: I will use Jim again. He does good work, and is a professional. He's not the least expensive, and you need to be very specific about the work you want done. He's nice, honest, and a salesman. At a minimum, you walk away with peace of mind knowing the job was done right. He showed up on time to give an estimate. He explained his credentials and gave a good sales pitch. He talks a lot, which can be both good and bad. It's clear he's been doing this for a long time, knows what he's doing, and knows what he is worth. After reviewing the proposed work, he went home and put together a quote. The quote was written as one price for a few different jobs. This made it hard to tease out how much each item was, in the event that I wanted to do some work later and some work now. In fairness, this is partly b/c he would charge a different price to come back out to the house a second time to do a project. While getting the quote, I asked if my skylight was truly in need of repair, or if the fan alone would likely solve my problem. (I had originally asked him to replace the skylight.) While he never brought it up on his own, he was honest when I asked the question, and told me the skylight did not need replacement. I'm thankful for his honesty, and while I'm not sure I would have done anything differently from what Jim did, I do wish he had told me from the start that my solution wasn't the right solution, and the skylight did not need to be replaced. Jim showed up on time the morning of the job, and was done in a half a day, as he'd promised. The work he was asked to do looked good, and I have not had any problems with it to date. His cleanup was mostly good, but he could have swept a bit better. Also, he only does exactly what you've contracted and asked him to do, which can be bad if you do not know what to ask for. For example, I had asked him to replace some wood trim around the skylight. To me, this meant replace the trim and paint it. To Jim, this meant paint it if he's asked to. Fortunately, during the process of giving me a quote, he did ask if I wanted it primed. I said that I did. I wasn't thinking clearly at the time, and it's more my fault than Jim's that it was never fully painted, but ultimately, I would like it better if it was painted.
Description of Work: Jim installed a ventilation fan in my master bathroom. This required him to install the fan in our skylight alcove, run tubing through the attic and roof to vent the moist air, and do some electrical work for the new fan switch, which also operates on a timer. Jim provided all the materials and equipment for the job. From what I can tell, he used high quality parts, and charged a mark-up for them.

I called on a Tuesday morning to schedule an appointment for an estimate to replace two old skylights. Mr. Ellington explained over the phone what he would do and how much it would cost. He arranged to meet at my home at 7:30 am the very next morning to inspect the situation and provide a written quote for the work. He explained in detail what needed to be done, showed me the skylight he would install, and quoted the same cost that he had given over the phone the day before. He had an opening in his schedule and would be able to do the work the next morning. He arrived on time and completed the work by 1:00 pm. He ran into a few glitches because the house is over 100 years old and the guys who replaced the roof shingles a few years ago did not flash the old skylights correctly. He finished the project in a reasonable time and for the cost quoted. I am pleased with the quality of work, the quality of the skylights, the knowledge and skill of Mr. Ellington, and how quickly he completed the project.

Jim was very responsive to my phone calls and emails. He gave me quotes for one and two Velux skylight replacements and also for an older model and newer model of skylights. I went with the older model to save money. I would never know the difference. He was on time and it looked great. I wasn't actually there when he replaced the skylights but my mother-in-law gave him the check I had written out for him. I completely forgot that I had given him a $350 deposit, so I paid him the full amount plus the $350! Fortunately as soon as I realized I made the mistake, I contacted them and they sent me the check (and an invoice for my records as I had requested) right away. I would definitely recommend Jim.

I interviewed three contractors, in all, for the sklights job. The owner of Ellington Woodworks, Jim, came out for the consultation, and once chosen, then he and his brother worked together on the job. If you want someone willing to cut a real low cost to get the work, don't call Jim. Jim is knows his fair price for a quality job. He is assertive and definite in some things but you can see why because he's also very experienced. He's been doing this (installing skylights) for at least 30 years and takes a lot of pride in his work. He sent me his quote and contract promptly. He required a $1,700 deposit up front, with rest of payment due upon job completion. Both men were professional, courteous, punctual and conscientious on the job. They both have a nice sense of humor, too - without being yuckety yuck or intrusive. Jim may let you know if he sees something else amiss around your place - he's got a critical eye from being a longtime contractor - so he sees other stuff that needs fixing. Of course you can choose to have him repair that or not. He and his brother completed all work within the estimated timeframe. I have had no problem with the skylights - no leaking or sticking. I do not remember how long Jim's guarantee is on his skylight work - I want to say two years. I do remember when I compared his guarantee to other contracters', Jim's guarantee was longer. Oh, and he is a general contactor with a license, which is important. If we decide to install more skylights, I would definitely call Elllington Woodworks. Regarding the chimney rebuild needed in my case due to longtime rotted wood you could see in many places, the company did the same good job and I was/am satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: Installation of two Flux skylights/flashing system in living room (between trusses). In my case, the price not only included custom trim, all painting, slylight screens and a manual control rod, but also hauling away of water damaged wood from chimney shaft and adjacent areas. (The company also does woodwork, hence its name, and rebuilt my entire chimney at a sep. cost.)

Ellington requested a deposit of $600 and signed contact that had a start/end date on a day I said would be inconvenient for me. When I called to confirm a week later, he said he thought the part was in but wanted to be sure before confirming the date. From what he said, I expected a call later that day. When I did not receive a call, I emailed, and called twice over the next week. He did not return my calls. I finally had to demand my money back to get his attention. We did talk about it. He said he thought I over-reacted. Perhaps I did. but the $600 was hard to come by. I explained to him that he had said before he didn't want to work on the skylights in hot weather, and it was getting late in the season. I was concern the work would not get done until fall. He said that he didn't get back to customers until he had the parts and that worked 90% of the time. I said I just wanted to know what was happening and a simple email or phone call saying the part had not yet arrived would have let me know I was still on his radar. He finally accepted the point, but I not sure he will change the way he does business. I checked I would use his company again in the future, but I am not sure.
Description of Work: Ellington replaced electronics in my Velux skylights. He came out in 2009 to give me an estimate, but I couldn't afford it at the time. He also told me that I had wiring problems in the attic that while not critical, did need to be addressed. When I had wiring fixed and had the money I called again and he returned to give me another estimate. I was surprised that his estimate increased about $150 or about 15%. I don't know if the price increase came from him or Velux. He replaced the electronics and the skylights now work okay, though he is not sure how long the blinds will operate. He recommended that I replace the skylights with a new model. We shall see. I keep the blinds closed during the summer months.

They did an excellent job as they promised, on time, and in budget. Ellington's manner both on the phone, and in person is somewhat haughty. He criticized our decisions, the work done by other contractors (to our satisfaction), and was a little put out to be doing such a small job. Later he complained that he wasn't getting enough work. :) That said, we didn't hire him for his personality, he did a quality time, on time, and on budget.
Description of Work: Installed two window style skylights in our main room. It took just a day, and included the trim work, but did not include painting. The skylights are beautiful and what we were hoping for.

Work was performed on time and within the time frame specified. Mr. Ellington provided extra information which was useful and not required. Subsequently, one leak reoccurred. He was back the very next day to complete the work. I await the next storm to see if the problem is resolved. Overall, he is very professional, helpful, and I would recommend him to anyone for this type of work.
Description of Work: Two skylights were replaced with new skylights, and four skylights were redone due to leaking. Some roofing shingles were replaced as part of the process of installation and rehab.
