Every aspect of the experience with Custom Glass & Doors Studios was performed with excellence. Furthermore, the people with whom I interacted (employees and subcontractors) were all very pleasant and courteous. They were a joy to work with. The quality of the work was fabulous, they were always on time, followed up, etc. It was a superb experience.

I contacted CG&D for two sets of shower doors in guest bathrooms. Since these were guest baths, I wanted something that looked nice but wasn't too expensive. The owner, Trip Cathcart, was very knowledgeable, professional, and responsive. He clearly laid out my options with pricing for each, and I appreciate the fact that he did not try to oversell me on something more expensive. The installer, Rocco, was great - very efficient and didn't leave any mess. I'm very happy with my entire experience with CG&D and highly recommend them.

The price was so much better than other quotes I had gotten - $133 per instead of $265 per. The order took about 2 weeks, and was very nicely wrapped. They provided me with plastic spacers for in between the glass and wood also. Very friendly staff and everything went perfect. Thank you!

I wanted to change out the brass custom glass on our transom and side lights to update it a bit. I met with Trip on Jan 26 and all was great. He gave some great design ideas and explained the process. I signed the contract and gave him 50% deposit. Within 2 weeks an installer came and measured for the glass. Then he had to come back again within a week as apparently they needed more measurements or something. They had said 6-8 weeks for installation. On 3/12 I approved the final design and was told installation would be around 4/21 as apparently the 6-8 weeks is after you approve design (I was never told that). I sent a note on 4/11 and asked for an update. Apparently the glass had been backordered and Lisa would let me know of a new installation date. I heard nothing...I followed up with a note on 4/24 with Lisa. Again I was told they were backlogged and she would let me know of a new date. I heard nothing. On 5/4 I sent another note and got a little short with them asking what the deal was. It had been 4 months since I wrote the check and I had nothing done yet. Trip called and was really nice - wanted to come out and measure. What?? He had already had someone measure twice! He came out on 5/5 and took another template. Apparently our front door was installed backwards and the transom had some manual adjustments done to it so he wanted to verify the template. Why he didn't come out sooner, I have no idea. He said it would be ready in 2 weeks. I sent a note after 2 weeks as I had heard nothing (reoccurring theme...I had to keep following up with them!). Installation began the next week. The outside clear glass was done by a contractor, and was put in great. I am not pleased with the installation of the leaded glass which was put in by Trip himself.. A piece of the leaded tape they used on the inside came off within a week. There is a smudge right at eye level that was not cleaned off before they installed so there is no way to clean it now. Trip came and put silicon on the piece that had come off and said this is only the 2nd house he has ever had this happen to. Regarding the smudge he first went in to a talk about how standards say you stand back so many feet from the glass and if it looks ok, it's good. I don't care what standards are! He did offer to remove and reinstall the side light to clean the smudge but at this point I just want them out of my house. I've had to take off work way too much for this installation. I would not use them again. The leaded glasswork is really good, but the process of having to always follow up and the fact it took almost 5 months was just not a good experience.

Response from Custom Glass & Door Studios
I am Trip Cathcart. I founded CG&D Studios in 1985 and continue to own and operate our studio today. Having worked for our clients for the last 29 years, I appreciate the expectations of each client in every phase of their project. My staff and I, including my artist and carpenter (whom [member name removed] refers to as a contractor) are committed to quality as well. In fact, when [my carpenter] left [member name removed]'s house this morning he reported that she said that the art glass is beautiful and that she is very happy. He was surprised when I shared her negative review. To address her specific complaints: Responsiveness Grade D - I counted 41 emails to and from [member name removed] during the design, build and installation process. My staff and I made 13 trips to her home. I made 3 phone calls to her during the build process - she did not return my calls, apparently preferring email, which I respect. I answered her numerous questions as accurately and as timely as I am able. She mentioned that she got a tardy response from [my artist]. [my artist] is typically very responsive. She was on vacation March 14 - 19, but she had her vacation responder on her email. Delay in Production and Installation - [Member name removed] and I met on January 28 and my team and I performed the final installation on May 30. [Member name removed]'s project took too long, no question. There were, however, unique circumstances. Hers was a complex installation requiring that we remove the old art glass and install new clear insulated glass units, followed by installation of new updated art glass. During the fabrication of the art glass, we had difficulty reconciling the measurements. I went out to the job myself to measure on May 5 and determined that her entire entry, door frame, sidelights, and transom, were installed backwards when the house was built. To give her the best installation we would have to reorder all the glass and start from scratch. And that is what we did. When she asked me how much longer, I told her it would take 2 weeks just to get the glass in before we could start work, and at least a week to fabricate the art glass. I reiterated that several times. On May 28 Steve installed the Insulated glass, and, after sufficient drying time, my installer and I installed the art glass on May 30. In hindsight, I should have gone out to her home before May 5 - we did not anticipate her entry being installed backwards. Quality of the Installation poor: Overall quality grade C. [Member name removed] says "I am not pleased with the installation of the art glass which was put in by Trip himself". She was very happy with the installation the day I left on Friday, May 30. However, a small piece of lead became dislodged from the transom over the weekend. I am not sure exactly how that happened, but [my carpenter] reinstalled it Monday morning, June 2. I followed up to put a bead of silicon on the lead over the transom to assure stability. Seeing that the lead was installed properly, I assured her that this was unusual (in 29 years I only remembered one other instance), and that it would be fine. She had numerous other complaints - lead width on the edge, bumps in the lead, etc. I answered each question, assuring her that it is normal, which it is. She was most upset about a smudge behind the glass. Although it was a sunny day and we were 18 inches from the spot where she had seen the smudge, neither she nor I could see it. She said you could see it in the morning when the direct sunlight was shining through the glass. I explained the glass industry standard for visual defects as outlined in the ASTM glass industry manual. I also offered to remove the glass and rework it. She refused. If she changes her mind, we will come out and remove the glass and rework it. However, the quality of the installation is, in my opinion, excellent. In summary, we take pride in our craftsmanship and service, and we emphasize making the customer experience a happy one. We take great pride in our work, and in representing our studio well, and if a client is not happy with our work or the customer experience, then we have not done our job as well as we should have. [Member name removed]'s art glass is beautiful, and the quality is outstanding. However, if [member name removed] wants us to remove the art glass and refund the cost of the art glass, I will gladly do that. As for the customer experience and our responsiveness, we tried to do our best. Next time, we try harder. Thanks, Trip

May 16, 2014 -- by Ed Oberzut My wife and I experienced a great challenge when we worked long distance with a craftsman at CGD on a customized project of designing our colorfully stained glass bi-fold doors. But, when the finished doors arrived safe and sound very well packed in a tractor-trailer at our condo, we were so pleased when we opened the boxes. Immediately, a local craftsman installed the doors at the wide entrance to my office. We were positively thrilled to finally see our functional art piece in place. Our joy was so great that we felt we needed to share the experience, so we planned a “Grande Reveale” party for the other condo owners in our complex so they could also enjoy the beauty of our stained-glass folding doors. Prior to the party, the doors were covered over with sheets, like the veiling of a great art piece. At the beginning of the party, the room was lit only with a few candles and all the guests were quietly brought into the room to view the unveiling. We played American Indian drum music to a crescendo. At the proper moment, bright lights on the other side of the closed doors came on and the drape covering was quickly lowered. Everyone gasped with delight at the same time! The light showed up the marvelous colors and the Native American design. It was an awesome experience! The folding stained glass doors by CGD are our pride and joy and add so much richness and colors to our condo.

I did not do business with them but everything was fine with the quote process. They knew what they were doing and I had no issues with that but I went with a different company. We talked on the phone and they came out within a day or two. They were just a little on the pricey side and that was all. They were good.

The service person, Mike McCarthy arrived precisely as scheduled. He was able the confirm our diagnosis of the reason for the dead bolt lock malfunction. He corrected it by placing a cardboard sheet under the lower hinge, which altered the path of the door so that the dead bolt lock then functioned perfectly.
