Heating and Air Conditioning

About us

At Comfort Monster, we live by our motto, "Service So Good... It's Scary!" There are reasons why we were recently voted IndyWeek's Best of the Triangle for HVAC, why we have such a high rating on Angie's List and other review sites, and why our customers call us back to their homes year after year. Our technicians average more than 10 years of experience, and they get no incentives for selling you anything. Their focus is on helping you make informed HVAC decisions, not pushing services you don't need. Our system replacement estimates are always no-obligation and 100% free, and we will make financing your new system easy. A few of our credentials: NATE certified, Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer, licensed and insured.

Description of Work: I use G&M Service Co for heating and A/C services. They've done extensive work for us. They've done duct re-working and they did a whole geothermal installation. We've changed our old system out to geothermal and so they've done a lot of work for us.

I initially called the company at 8:22 in the morning and requested service for a heating unit that was not working. They were very responsive to my needs and were able to send out a technician right away and we met at the house about 930 am. The problem was quickly diagnosed and after the part was obtained, it was easily fixed. The issue with the company is that when I got home I did a parts search on the internet and found the part for around $60-$70 depending on where they got it from. I called to question the price of the call. They said the technician accidentally charged me twice for the diagnostic charge ($99) and they would remove that from the charge. Then I asked about the price of the part. They told me it was right at $200. I asked what they paid and they said $70-somthing (and lt;$80). I asked why such the upcharge and they said there is no way that they could stock every part on their truck (which I understand) and there there was a part retrieval fee. I also understand that if they have to drive to get a part that there could be a charge with gas being so expensive, technician time, etc. but the technician was gone less than 45 minutes and once the work was started took about 10 minutes to complete the repair. They were not willing to budge on the part retrieval fee (or whatever they called the fee). Was calling to sign up for a service plan but guess I'll try to go with someone who won't rip me off on markup of parts they need. Also, the technician put a start time of 8 am and I didn't even call until 8:22 and met him at 9:30ish at the residence.

We are very sorry that you have a problem with our pricing. Every service call we make starts with a diagnostic charge ($99). We review this charge with the customer at the time the service call is taken. This charge covers the cost for our technician to diagnose the problem(s) with the customer’s system. Once we diagnose the problem, we refer to our flat rate pricing and give the customer the price before we make the repair. In the case of your service call this price was $211. The pricing included the price of the part(s) as well as the labor to install and the time taken in acquiring the parts. In the case of your service call; the technician left the office at 8:00 that morning, he was dispatched to your home at 8:33 and left your home at 10:58 (total time for the call 2.5 hours). This includes the time it took the technician to obtain the part. The total cost of the service call was $310. This charge is less than If we had billed for the service tech’s time ($100/hour) and the for the parts separately. Again, we are very sorry that you have an issue with our pricing, but I believe you will find that our pricing is comparable to the competitors in the Triangle area.

I've used them a couple of times. I had a maintenance contract and they came out twice a year to check the units. A long time ago one of the units broke and they did the maintenance on it. It was under warranty and they did a reasonable job on it. They are a certified company for the manufacturer. All of the stuff is expensive. I haven't needed them for an emergency. They were on time. I might use them again but I might also look at somebody else.

This was a very good experience from start to finish. The Operations Manager who came out to estimate the job was very through and professional. After inspecting the old system which was still functioning but not very efficient, he sized a new system based on the size of the home and my comments regarding the performance of the existing system. He explained the various options available and the relative cost of each. The difference between the lower grade systems and the top of the line was not that much different, especially with the factory rebate on the higher end system which is what we decided to go with. Once that was decided, the work was scheduled for about 2 weeks later. The crew showed up on time, removed the old system and began installation of the new. It took about a day and a half to get everything installed, including redoing some of the duct work at the furnace. The Operations Manager came by each day to check on the work and see if we had any questions or problems. Everything was cleaned up after the installation and we were totally pleased with the work. Another technician came by to install the and quot;smartand quot; thermostat and explain all the options. We have been using the system now for one summer and two winters, and we are completely satisfied. After the first year, the company inspected the heating and cooling units and the thermostat to confirm that all were operating correctly. We had noticed a high pitched whine from the furnace which turned out to be caused by a combustion exhaust fan that was not perfectly balance. The fan was replaced and the problem resolved. This was a good choice for both equipment and installer. We have an upstairs unit that does not get much use but may have to be replaced in a few years. We will definitely go back to Gand M when the time comes. We have recommended Gand M to our friends.
Description of Work: Replaced existing 1992 HVAC system with a new Carrier system including a 2 ton, 2 stage Performance series A/C unit, and a 2 stage variable speed Infinity series gas furnace with a small fan powered humidifier. Received a $1000 factory rebate on the system.

GM is a local (non-chain) Carrier dealer. I got 3 bids from 3 different service providers for installation of 2 ton heat pump package unit. For initial contact, specification, and bid, G and M sent a very knowledgeable man who was a principal in the company. He took time to do a thorough job of actually determining what would be the best unit for my particular needs. He provided clear explanations and education on the parameters of choosing the appropriate technology and unit size. There was no hard sell.G and M gave me the lowest of two realistic prices, while another company with a hard sell mentality wanted 1500 more but kept calling and lowering the price. The crew that did the installation were excellent, cleanup was superb. The foreman was there most of the day. In finalizing the order I had many phone conversations with the owner. All questions were answered, phone calls returned. There was a part of the duct work sealing that was missed. Upon being informed, a crew was sent the next day and the oversight corrected. The national carrier brand company changed the terms of a company rebate between time of order and time of installation. G and M honored the original terms. An excellent experience in every way. I would definitely recommend these folks very highly, and will use their services for maintenance and repair. I am totally satisfied.
Description of Work: Provide and install Carrier 2 ton hybrid dual fuel heat-pump and propane package HVAC unit with installation and substantial duct work to bring my existing ducts up to code. All existing ductwork mastic sealed. Work included a humidifier, and thermidistat digital programmable thermostat.

On the night of the 'deep freeze' (below 20 degrees), both of our gas furnaces failed. Luckily, we have gas logs so we had heat. My husband called Gand M Services, since they completed the installation of the system last spring. We reported that both drain pipes were frozen over, solid ice, and that we had no heat, other than our gas logs in the living room. Gand M sent one of their technicians over to take a look at the situation and confirmed that yes, in fact, the drain pipes had, once again, frozen over. This was on Friday night. Perri, the crew chief who had been in charge of the original installation, was called by Gand M. Perri was just getting off from work and he called us. We told him what was going on. He went straight over to a hardware store and bought heat wraps and any other equipment he thought he might need for the job. We had experienced this situation previously so my husband had already purchased 2 small portable electric heaters with fans, to use for this specific problem. After contacting Gand M, my husband and I went outside, pulled out 2 large plywood boards, 2 metal saw horses, and 2 large plastic tarps, together with painters tape, and created 2 make shift heating baffles over both of our a/c reverse cycle systems, using the portable electric heaters plugged into heavy duty power cords outside. During the middle of the night, the ice in the pipes thawed enough to allow the water to begin to drain out and our furnaces came back on. We had turned our gas logs on and warmed up the rooms using fans for air flow to generate the heat back to our bedroom, then turned off the gas logs. The next day, Sat., Perri was at our home bright and early and got started. He removed all the baffling materials, finished thawing and removing the drain pipes from both furnaces, wrapped them with heating tapes, installed thermostatic controls with new electric sockets in our attic, wrapped insulation around the drain pipes, and reattached everything. Then he double checked everything in the system to insure it was working correctly. There was no charge for a half days intensive labor. Since one of the thermostats (Special efficiency) was still showing a problem, he called another technician who is trained in this, to come on Monday to check this and find out what was the further problem. The second technician found the water condensation drain pump had apparently burned out, either from 3 years of use or as a result of the drain freezing and over heating the pump. This was changed and we were charged $205 for this. We had received $100 in coupons from Carrier from our previous installation of their new equipment, so we used these coupons together with a check for $105 to pay the bill. Gand M Service responded quickly and Perri did a terrific job of working to insure our systems worked and we had heat again. Whatever he wasn't trained to fix, he called in another person to resolve from Gand M. Together they got everything working and we have been very pleased.
Description of Work: Removed frozen drain lines on exterior/interior of home, in the attic, for 2 high efficiency gas furnaces and reinstalled with heating wraps to prevent freezing on both systems, at no charge, to correct system failure. Also replaced burned out water condensation drain pump on one furnace. We were charged for the pump replacement only.

The system was well designed, corrected a number of previous problems, and greatly improved the airflow throughout the house, and we immediately noted a major reduction in our utility bills. We did however, encounter numerous problems during the installation, one of which required our calling in our plumber, to finally resolve one of the many problems. We had problems with 4 different pieces of Carrier equipment, all had to be replaced. The entire installation took 5 1/2 months from start to finish to get all the 'bugs' worked out. There were numerous problems about ordering and installing the correct equipment, installing the correct sized drain lines, (caused frozen drain lines), causing malfunctions of the furnace, not removing the old furnace flue pipes, etc. We noted that the men who were doing the work were pushed beyond their limits (to hurry and complete the work) because they had another job to go to. As a result, mistakes were made. The men worked long and hard!
Description of Work: Gave estimate based on redesigning the whole house heating/air conditioning systems (2 furnaces/2 air conditioners) for replacing 20 year old furnace and two central air conditioners, each at least 10 years old, plus resizing, replacing all duct work for 3400 sq. ft. house, and replace with high efficiency gas furnace (Carrier), and heat pumps (Carrier). We contacted 4 different companies. Only two responded with written bids. G & M was the only one who gave us a bid based on the overall square footage of our home, our personal needs and usage, and actually redesigned the whole house heating/cooling system to fit our specific needs. G & M calculated and selected the size of the new units based on our specifics, rather than simply replacing the old units with similar sized units, which were inadequate.
