As mentioned above, Eddie was professional and I felt confident in his abilities. He did not need to add coolant. Also, my phone contact with Cape Fear was excellent. The person I spoke with to schedule an appointment was competent, friendly, and I felt reassured Cape Fear is a good company. I will contact them again when needed.
Description of Work: I did not watch the check-up process but Eddie, the Cape Fear service person, has years of experience and I felt confident he would do the right things. He checked the air conditioner as well as the duct work for possible leaks including going into the crawl space to do a complete duct work checkup.

The technician (Steve) showed up on time with a phone call 30 minutes prior to arrival as requested. He was exceptionally professional and cleaned the unit thoroughly (including clearing out at least 6-10 inches of mud/leaves/debris that had encircled the base). He found a few things that could use repair but explained to me in detail why they should or shouldn't be repaired (it's an 18 year old unit). He explained everything patiently and professionally, never overselling service or repairs. I will undoubtedly use Cape Fear again for any HVAC projects I need completed, up through the replacement of the air conditioning unit when it finally gives up the ghost. This was far and away one of my most positive experiences with a home repair service.

Stephen Rardon from Cape Fear is the man! He is extremely thorough and detailed and went above and beyond during the AC tune-up on my system. He pointed out that the Heat Exchanger for the furnace had 3 rust holes which is a health hazard as that leaks carbon monoxide into the air being blown into the house. I guess it's not enough to set off my carbon monoxide detectors but I'm definitely glad he pointed it out. He also found a capacitor that was weak and that the blower wheel was pretty cruddy. He emailed me the technical reports containing photos of the issue so I have them which was great. Funny thing is I used another company in the fall of last year to do furnace tune-ups on both my systems and was told everything was fine. I immediately called my home warranty company to get a claim initiated on the heat exchanger and other 2 items. They sent their own contractor to diagnose all 3 things and concurred and submitted them to the warranty company. Waiting to hear how much they'll cover. I may just cash out and have Cape Fear replace the whole unit. We'll see. I'd recommend Cape Fear to anyone. They're the real deal, no corner-cutting,

Absolutely happy with Cape Fear! I dealt with Tim P****** on the sales end to get a quote for a Trane furnace to go along with the Trane air conditioner they had on special on Angie's List. I also got quotes from 2 other companies. Tim from Cape Fear was the only one who pointed out that the old air conditioner had a 5/16" refrigerant line but it actually should have been a 3/8" line so he recommended changing that line and do the 3/4" suction line while they were at it. He gave me a great price and the quality of the work was outstanding. Steven and David, who were the technicians doing the installation, were both great. Steven arrived early even to get a jump on things while David was picking up the new equipment. They ran the new lines exactly how I wanted and were able to hide them inside of gutter downspout which hides them really nicely. I popped in on them a few times while they were working and both offered great info about everything which left me feeling extremely in-the-know. They did a neat job and I feel the price, quality and value was outstanding! Would definitely recommend Cape Fear to anyone and I'll most likely be using them to replace my 1st floor packaged unit down the road. Thanks guys for a great experience!

This was a $29 big deal purchase. It was lovely, but we ended up not following through with service with them, even though we needed some service because it was such a different review than what we had gotten previously from a very well-reviewed company. He was ridiculously nice, the guy who came to do the service, but it was just one of those things where we opted to wait and not do any repairs on our heating unit this last winter. We ended up having such a mild winter that our unit did not actually stop working. He was the one who said that we probably be fine going through. I am not sure if we would actually use him in the future or not mainly just because it was just a vibe we got off the guy who came and that was it. I would not give them a bad review but it wasn't a glowing experience that made us want to follow through with them. They were extremely communicative and set up everything with us right away. He showed up when he was supposed to show up. He did smoke, which, actually, bugs me because I am slightly allergic to cigarette smoke. When he was in the unit working -- I know that everything is connected -- when he turned the unit on I think it was just on his clothing -- it is not like he was smoking inside the unit -- but he was just, like, a walking cigarette. As a result when he turned the unit on and air started circulating again I came in the house. That is the vibe I am referring to. I thought that was awfully disrespectful. I found a cigarette butt in my yard so that would be the only super- negative aspect of it. The fact that he smoked on the property and got smoke in the house kind of bothered me. They also told us we needed a new upstairs heating unit, even though our house was built in 2008 so it is not that old. We got a second opinion and were even told by the City of Cary that we did not need to put a new heating unit upstairs. It was like we were getting misinformation so that is another reason why we probably won't got ahead and do anything else with them. I question whether or not they are taking on too much or not being a smaller company. The price was great.

Another company had a regular maintenance agreement for our HVAC, so when our Rheem AC died that company gave us an estimate of $7100 for replacing the system, including the ventilation pipes that would need to be re-done in a larger size in order to accommodate the new system, necessitating a larger opening in the roof. That seemed reasonable, and that company had done a well for us in other respects in the past, but we decided to call Cape Fear AC & Heating and get a second estimate. Tim came out and had several valuable insights. First, he found that our existing 1.5 ton (a measure of heat removal per hour) system for the downstairs was inadequate, and so he recommended upgrading to a 2-ton system. He did a careful computer analysis, mapping out our floor plan, windows, etc., with his software in order to make that determination. Second, he observed that the air intake was inadequate and so he suggested adding a second return and suggested a good place to put it. Third, he did some investigation for different possible replacement manufacturers, and found that if we replaced the original 19-year-old Rheem unit with a new unit from the same manufacturer, we would not need to install a larger ventilation pipe. He made a phone call to confirm that. That saved quite a bit of extra work and expense. He offered us the system with no haggling for $4900. I inquired about the more expensive systems with higher SEER levels and he helped me to do the math to figure out that it probably wouldn't be worth it, in spite of the energy savings and rebates. We also ended up upgrading both thermostats to programmable Honeywell 6000 thermostats for a total of $175, which was a great deal, so total cost was $5075. The installation went well. Two guys worked hard for an entire Friday. There was a problem when they finished and we couldn't yet use the system, and they offered to have someone come out that night and continue working on it, but the weather was pleasant and I needed to leave for the evening and so I asked them to send someone on Monday. Eddie came on Monday morning as promised and promptly resolved two problems: a damaged switch needed to be replaced, and also the thermostat wires were damaged because another vendor had placed the hot water heater on top of those wires a month earlier. Eddie was able to solve both problems. Eddie also took the time to show me in detail how to program the new thermostats. I was very pleased with everything that the company did, start to finish.
Description of Work: Replaced HVAC system (both AC and Heating) in my attic. They installed the new unit, including a 2-ton Rheem 14-SEER AC system, and removed the old unit, which heats/cools our downstairs. Also, they added a new return (air intake) because they calculated that my existing return was insufficient. They also replaced two thermostats with more modern programmable thermostats at my request.

Let me begin by saying if I could give A+'s or 100 out of a scale of 1-10 I would. Since I moved here, these people were the most professional, honest and sincere contractor I have ever used. We purchased the $519.00 deposit for the a/c unit. The great service began with the call from the office to schedule, Kaleigh was wonderful and helpful. Told her about some of my experiences with less than honest and trustworthy vendors. She said that she had also recently moved here and that Cape Fear was wonderful to work for and they did great work and were looking for long term customers and not just a one-time buy. I then talked to Shane and he was wonderful as well. I told him I just wasn't looking for a one-time job which a lot of Angie's List things can be, I wanted a long term relationship with a HVAC company that will take care of my system's needs for years to come. He assured me that they were looking for the same kind of customer. We scheduled the very next day for an assessment of my system's needs. The next day, Tim showed up to discuss what we might be interested in down the line. We were so impressed with his professionalism, image, demeanor and knowledge that we went ahead and order a system for the upstairs. It was a unit that was 20 years old and needed replaced anyway. The install folks showed up the next day and did the work installing the new unit and fix the ducts and distribution system upstairs. All work was GREAT. They were clean and you never even knew they were in the house at all. I cannot recommend Cape Fear more strongly. Best contractor we have worked with since I moved to Cary!!! John

Purchased coupon through Angie's List. No contact from vendor, so I called them myself to schedule service. Technician arrived on time and was polite and professional. The $39 coupon on Angie's List seems like a good deal. Here's the catch: Cape Fear Air Conditioning and Heating Co. adds about a 900% mark-up to the parts that it installs. This is how they are able to offer a $39 coupon for service. Example: The technician told me the capacitor in my air handler was "running weak", which is true. Then he told me that his company would charge $90 for a new capacitor, plus labor to install it. The part costs, on average $10 (visit Grainger.com and search "Oval Motor Run Capacitor, 7.5 Microfarad Rating, 370VAC Voltage") and takes 4 minutes to install (go to youtube.com). This company is counting on you to be a) ignorant and/or b) lazy, as the core of their business model.
