I called on Monday to get my water heater drained. ARS made a prompt appointment for the very next day to come. They attempted to drain the water heater but realized that the anode rod was completely dissolved by the hard water. I had been having problems with the water heater and decided to replace it, the plumber named Rick was very nice and I appreciated his kindness not to mention the work was done with a satisfaction guarantee or money back from the company. Great job!
Description of Work: I needed a new anode rod because the one from my water heater was completely disintegrated from water. I ended up getting a brand new water heater.

With over 250 employees, each person certainly has a different skill level. However there are set procedures that are to be followed on every service call and you should receive very good service based on company standards independent of who arrives. I will bring this concern to our technical training department and have them review everyone status. I am also refunding the last service call ($80?) since you feel your service quality may have varied. You will receive a check within 7 to 10 days. Thank you for your continuing support. After receiving the estimate and paying ARS to "top off the R-22 downstairs", I contacted several other companies. Raleigh Heating & Air (who I've been told is very reputable and honest) told me over the phone that to service my unit (I gave them the model number) and replace the evaporator coil would be at a minimum $1,000 and a maximum of $1,700. That's right... the maximum cost would be barely less than HALF of what ARS quoted. Two days later I had another company out to try and find the leak. You guessed it, no leaks anywhere. He spent probably half an hour with his freon sniffer trying to find a leak and was not able to find one on either unit. He then checked the pressure on the R-22 on both units and found them both to be perfectly full and both units operating just as they should. Based on that information, I called ARS's customer service line and left a message. They called me back this afternoon, and I relayed the story of the service and the statements made by other companies. The ARS guy who called me back was very professional and stated that they would refund my $170. As such, I am satisfied with their customer service, considering the likelihood that my system actually needed R-22 added is extremely low, and I'd be willing to bet more than $3,270 the tech didn't put any more in there for the $170 I was charged. What it boils down to is this: ARS techs are out to sell you a completely new system as they are most likely paid on commission for sales. Upon relaying this story to a family friend, nearly the exact same situation panned out at their house. In their case, the tech was promptly fired and they were refunded as well. Based on all this, I'd venture that this sort of thing happens with ARS a lot. They were nice about it, but I think anyone would prefer to have decent honest service up front instead of having to double check behind every service - and inevitably pay somebody else to do what ARS should have done the first go-round. To be completely honest, I think I'm the most frustrated throughout this experience that a company would try to pull something like this on someone who's been using them exclusively for HVAC and plumbing for the past two years and was already signed up for their service contract. What kind of company screws over their loyal customers?! The bottom line is this: if you're looking to have your HVAC serviced, you should absolutely call somebody else. In response to the company: I do not feel that ARS was too expensive in their pricing - that's not what I'm dissatisfied with at all. I believe, with very good reason, that the technician reported items being broken or in need of repair that were in fact working perfectly in the hopes of selling me an all new system. The facts behind that are that he told me my system was leaking (it isn't), and that was "extremely low on R-22" (it wasn't). He did not put any R-22 in my upstairs unit - the one was was supposedly leaking and, according to him, "extremely low on R-22". He charged me to put R-22 in the downstairs unit, though I sincerely doubt he did that given the other blatant lies the guy told me. Again, as stated above, no R-22 was added to the upstairs unit by ARS, but when another technician from another company came by, it was found to be perfectly full of R-22 and with no leaks to be found anywhere. As such, my problem with the service is the fact that I was quoted as astronomical amount of money to fix something that is working perfectly - and I believe the number was artificially high in order to price it closer to a whole new system so that the tech could make some extra money. Well, that and I believe I was charged $170 to put R-22 in my downstairs system when I sincerely doubt any was needed or added. Again, ARS's customer service is fantastic - but unfortunately some of their techs are rather dishonest. In response to the response: I do not need someone from ARS to come and try and find a leak. I've already had another company look over the unit for over a half hour with their equipment and were entirely unable to find any leaks. Furthermore, I figured I'd be over this by now, but every response from the company contains statements that are completely and totally untrue. I DID contact the company directly first. I wrote this review AFTER the issue had been resolved, and felt that other members deserved to hear about my experience - afterall, that is why we are all here. I especially felt that way after hearing a family friend went through nearly the exact same ordeal. I had previously felt the issue was entirely resolved, but now I feel like I'm having to defend my entirely factual, objective account of what transpired against complete nonsense. If ARS follows this up with more falsehood, I'll let member services take it from there. ARS has wasted far too much of my time as it is.
Description of Work: I've been on ARS's service contract for both HVAC and plumbing over the past two years and had them out a little over a week ago for the bi-annual service call. The tech told me my upstairs unit's evaporator coil was leaking R-22 and needed to be replaced at a cost of $3,270. He also told me my downstairs unit was low on R-22 as well, but he could not find a leak. Due to the high estimated cost, he recommended that I replace the whole system, despite the system being a higher-end Carrier and only 9 years old and regularly serviced. Our house is on the market, so I opted to have him top off the R-22 downstairs for $170 and decided I would get several other companies to come look at the upstairs unit.

$170

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
I am sorry that the customer feels that they were not properly diagnosed and that they feel we were too expensive in our pricing. Please note that the only money paid by the homeowner was $170 which was refunded (as the customer stated by a very professional person) when the slightest concern was expressed in the name of customer relations. The technician quoted a repair cost of $3270 but recommended that they not spend that money since R22 systems have not been manufactured for over 2 years and the price of r22 has increase 300% since january since it too is under EPA regulation. The book price on this replacement coil as a repair (again not recommended by ARS) is appx $2000 so there may have been other items included in the higher bid. Our replacement cost for both the inside coil and an brand new r410 outdoor unit is less than $4000 in many cases so no one should do this type of repair on an orphaned system. The homeowner indicates that they received a quote over the phone for a lower cost but that price was not guaranteed until the unit could be inspected. The homeowner indicates that the other company found the machine to be at full pressure 2 days later which would be normal since ARS added r-22 to the unit. ARS also utilizes freon testers that are very high end products since we provide them to our employees and we are liable for acccuracy with all of our customers. ARS has been serving the triangle for over 38 years and we have over 250 employees all of whom are drug tested and background checked. With this large of a service group, our standards for honesty are at the highest level as indicated by the story mentioned where a home was not properly diagnosed so the employee was terminated. We performed over 1000 service calls just this past week and our satisfaction rate is extremely high. The customer mentions the bottom line which is this with ARS. We will always recommend replacing a system that is r-22 based that has repairs in excess of $1000 since the replacement equipment is no longer manufactured, is a controlled product scheduled for elimation by the EPA, and most componants can not be replaced legally. This coil may last for months before losing its charge of r-22 (like a slow leak on a tire) which would then be a problem for the new purchasers. In looking at this, the correct advice of not spending any money on an r-22 system but considering having an estimate for a replacement matched AC 410 system (new legal refrigerant) was never requested by the homeowner (this est is free of charge and consists of preparing documentation required by law for obtaining a permit). I will gladly offer to have a senior supervisor at no charge go to this home and show the homeowner the location of the leak. This would validate our diagnosis and not leave the homeowner new purchaser with any surprises. Please contact my office at 919-865-7777 to make arrangements. Again I am sorry that the homeowner did not call us directly with this concern but I will gladly do whatever it takes to assure them of our honesty. Thank you David Dombrowski Manager

I was signed up as a contract customer for two homes for over 11 years and trusted ARS completely. They were nice, they were professional, they seemed to really care. Now I doubt ARS and the thousands we previously spent on equipment because of the experience that both I and my neighbors had. I strongly urge anyone using ARS to get a second opinion before making any large purchase with them. Otherwise they are good for regular service. This company is extremely sales oriented. They also have employees making sales phone calls at night. I had a very RUDE woman calling me and hanging up! I caught her on the caller ID and called back and asked to be removed from the list and she was rude and said that might take a few months. THIS REVIEW HAS BEEN EDITED AFTER I SPENT AN HOUR LISTENING to Mr. Dombrowski in a telephone call. I hope that he will now revise HIS response that contains many inaccuracies. I stand by my comments and what happened to me. I will not be intimidated from honestly sharing my experiences.
Description of Work: RESPONSE TO COMPANY'S RESPONSE: Angie's list does not provide a way to do this so I am making do. The response posted by Mr. Dombrowski is extremely long, contains many inaccurate statements and implies I'm a nut who made this all up. What his paperwork reflects and what happened are different but I am revising my post and muting my prior comments in response to an extremely long conversation with Mr. D. on 3/2/12. First, I told him that the dollar amount and date listed were estimates - we have spent at least $5k, probably more, in replacing and adding equipment as advised by ARS and Angie's list REQUIRES that these fields have an entry (I tried to use N/A). But his assertion that "NO MONIES" were paid by me is false, we've paid ARS at least $4500 in contract fees PLUS over $5,000 in equipment purchases (probably MUCH more) for the two homes over the years. I understand Mr. D's point of view but what I said was a true story and happened not only to me but to another homeowner. We were made to feel that our systems "HAD" to be replaced. His assertion about their life spans is not necessarily accepted by others and most people nowadays would prefer to postpone major expenses until they "have" to be made. I am sure some have more money and prefer to get newer equipment that is more efficient and that's fine. But both I and the other homeowner in my association were made to feel that it was an emergency that we make this huge expenditure immediately and neither of us had the money. Mr. D says that is not the ARS way, and that it was one of his top, long-term employees that met with us. Bottom line: I am editing my post but I stand by what happened to me and to my neighbor and don't appreciate being made out as a liar and hope that Mr. D will also edit his reply since our long conversation. I also hope that the comments he made to me and my husband about Mr. D having business dealing with my husband's company were not meant to pressure me to change my comments or not freely speak my mind and state what happened to me. And "relocating" the units wasn't a priority once I was told that I had a 911 emergency with my systems needing to be replaced at over $12,000 REVISED POST: I have been under contract with ARS on my house and my mother's house for over 11 years. I had a very bad experience with ARS last year and have been meaning to post this. The date listed is an approximation, not an exact date. The dollar amount listed is a low/conservative guess on what we spent on replacement equipment with ARS at my home. ARS was always nice and very professional but based on my more recent experiences, I no longer have confidence in their advice. My neighbors and I were both told we needed to spend over $12,000 to replace all our systems when independent contractors said we had many, many years left on our systems and only needed less than $250 in repairs. Here's the story: ARS told me AND a neighbor (not isolated incident!) that we had gotten them out "just in time" because our Heating and AC systems were about to fail and needed to be completely replaced. "Luckily," the ARS man was able to give us all sorts of discounts, coupons, manufacturer's rebates and other "deals" to save us money if we did the work quickly. After all these deals, it was just under $14,000 that we needed to spend to replace the heating and ac both upstairs and down (4 units total). He showed me photos he took supposedly showing that the pan under my water heater was "rusted through" and other problems. The man told me that ARS had already replaced the systems at about 50 homes around us (townhome area). Both my neighbor and I got another contractor to examine our systems and guess what? I needed only $153 in repairs and neighbor's repair was less than $300 and our systems have many, many more years of life. The pan had only surface rust, did not need replacement. Based upon my experiences, I believe ARS is more dedicated to sales than to the customer's actual need. Mr. Dombrowski says ARS is only trying to "educate" customers but I am a lawyer and I think I know the difference between someone telling me about how a new system would benefit me versus telling me that my current systems are going to fail at any moment and my situation is dire. Yes, ARS educates the customer but I definitely felt a lot of pressure to the point that both my neighbors and I were PANICKED because we didn't know how we were going to pay for this huge "necessary" expense. This is a big company and everyone uses them and thinks they are great but GET SEVERAL OTHER OPINIONS before you make ANY LARGE PURCHASE that ARS recommends!!

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
I am attempting to reach the homeowner since our records do not reflect any of the information on this complaint. The property where we offered to replace her units was not her primary home but a home recently inherited. The customer stated that on Sept 8, 2011 we completed her work and were paid $5000. WE HAVE NOT BEEN TO HER HOME SINCE MARCH 18, 2011 FOR SERVICE AND THAT WAS TO GIVE HER AN ESTIMATE FOR RELOCATING HER UNITS AND UPGRADING. If she paid someone $5000 in Sept, it was not ARS. I would appreciate Angie's list making this correction. ARS performed a seasonal cleaning and maintenance on both systems on March 18,2011. (ticket # 467453) The system was shown in the notes to be operating properly and needing no immediate repairs. There are 2 systems in the home and they are builder grade units appx 12 years old. The technician was paid $219 by credit card for a 1 year renewal ending March 2012 for a service agreement on both systems. (Please note the homeowner later cancelled this agreement and a full refund was made to the credit card) The technician listed 3 items for consideration that may benefit the homeowner consisting of installing an electrical service package which replaces the contactor and both capacitors (items which wear out and could easily fail at this age), replacement of the 4” media filters in both systems as part of normal maintenance, and installation/replacement of the UV light also. None of these items were required and no charges were made to the homeowner. The technician also recommended speaking with a project manager since the homeowner indicated they wished to relocate the units to a different location, replace the vents and possibly upgrade to a higher efficiency. In the complaint, the homeowner indicates that she had a second company (Ed Nolan who is listed as a 1 person company it appears working from his home) perform the needed repairs for only $153. Again ARS indicated that there were no needed repairs and the units were operational at the time. On the evening of March 18, 2011 the homeowner met with ARS. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss upgrading for efficiency, appearance to prepare the house for sale and to move the units. She signed a contract for a net final investment of $12,478 to replace 2 heating and AC systems with high efficiency Trane equipment, relocate the units, provide electrical service, seal ductwork, media filters, new registers and grilles, an all permits and warranties. The installation was scheduled for March 30,2011. This installation was rescheduled at the request of the homeowner 7 additional times until it was cancelled on 6/8/2011. NO MONIES were ever paid by the homeowner. The complaint mentions the water heater which we did not review however the drain pan under the unit did show signs of rust. ARS has changed out many of the systems in this subdivision since the original builder grade equipment is approaching the normal failure time for these units. In addition, many homeowners are concerned about operating costs and comfort and change equipment for the operational cost savings. I again request the homeowner to call me since this appears to be an issue of miscommunication. She indicates that we have always been “nice, professional and seemed to really care.” In reviewing these records, it appears that we stayed professional at all times and the homeowner had solid documented advice and incurred no expense. ARS has been serving the area for over 38 years and we are proud of our reputation and awards. I feel there is a major misunderstanding and I would appreciate the ability to correct this. ARS used to do a wonderful job - would send us knowledgeable, friendly repair people. The last two times they sent someone out, he tried to sell us extras that we did not need. We stopped using them because he claimed there was mold in our system and tried to stop me from touching it. When I did swipe some of what he was calling mold up with a fingertip, it was just a little dust.

I apologize for the method presented by our technician in stating there was mold growing in your system. We specifically instruct our technicians to never state that there is mold present since this requires testing by a lab to confirm. He should have stated that there was some dirt, dust or even a growth of some type and pointed out the areas. With the emphasis on air quality, we do not want to downplay the importance of a clean system but we also do not wish to be too assertive in identifying issues. I have looked at the latest service ticket (1006712) and he did suggest that a uv light installed for $299 might be an item to consider. This is a common accessory for air quality and should help with an older home. ARS is not trying to sell items when we perform the maintenance but we are trying to bring products that are only available through a contractor to the homeowner’s attention if it may be beneficial. With over 225 employees in the triangle for ARS, we constantly try to balance between providing too little information or too much (and appearing like salespeople and not technicians.) Again please accept my apology and I would like to extend your service agreement for free for 1 year as my way of saying we are sorry your experience was not up to our normal level. I will process this unless you contact me and wish to discuss. I would appreciate it is you let Angie’s list know if we have met your concerns Thank you David Dombrowski Manager.

I have been having a lot of problems with my HVAC unit and so I would be hesitant to recommend them. I didn't pay anything as it was covered by warranty. Most of the time when my HVAC went out it was 99 degrees. They have to come all the way, order the parts and it is the same part that is giving a problem on and on. I don't know about their price because everything has been covered under warranty. They have a 24 hour service and somebody answers the call. They are very professional employees. Based on the problems I have had with my AC unit I might not use them again.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
Thank you for your kind comments concerning the professionalism of ARS and our handling all of your problems under warranty at no cost to you. To recap, this is a new construction home built by Savvy Homes and in serviced April 2010. You had 2 main problems both of which were handled under warrranty. The Coil/drain pan in the Heat pump air handler had a leak from a factory defect. This was internal to the equipment and was a manufacturing problem at Carrier corporation. The second problem was a manufacturing defect in the Zone damper for the first floor. Again this was corrected under warranty at no cost. Please be aware that ARS has no involvement in the manufacturing of this equipment and the problems with your home were in no way related to any activity by ARS. They were both problems in the manufacturing process and not the installation. Any item where ARS had control over quality, we handled appropriately and properly. When the factory parts failed, we reacted in a professional manner and provided warranty. The homeowner indicates that he would be hesitant to use ARS based on his experience. I would agree with him that he may be concerned about recommending Carrier or the zoning manufacturer because of equipment failure but I request that he reconsider his thoughts about recommending ARS since we did everything within our power to provide excellent service. We install many brands of equipment and we pride ourselves on our service ability. If the homeowner agrees, I would appreciate it if he could modify the rating since this has an effect on ARS and not the companies that caused his problem when they built the units. Please call me at 919-828-5147 ext 1123 David Dombrowski if anyone has additional concerns or comments thank you

On Sunday afternoon I smelled gas in the garage and I had no hot water. I called ARS and they arrived in 30 minutes on a Sunday They said I had a bad gas valve. They replaced it with the same valve which was on the truck and it was fixed within 2 hours. Plumber was very pleasant.
Description of Work: ARS replaced the gas valve on my water heater

Their equipment works really well. I haven;t had any significant A letters. I really don't like their sales person. I had asked for an estimate on something, and he came back with the number that was around $9000. I thought that was high, so I went to another provider for an estimate. They gave a much better estimate that was something around $6000. ARS sales guy called and asked if I want to do business with them, and I said somebody gave me an estimate for $3000 less. He said he would talk to his boss. He came back and said that they can match with another estimate I got. This was the reason why I was not pleased. I had some very positive, and some very negative experience with them. It is just that I don't trust their sales guy. I may continue to use them, unless something breaks and then I will go to somebody else.
Description of Work: I used ARS / Rescue Rooter in the spring of this year. They came for a half-yearly check-up to make sure everything is working all right. They have been my heating and air conditioning provider since 2008.

I thank the homeowner for his positive comments concerning the high quality of the equipment and the service work. His concerns revolve around the price match guarantee that we offer as a company. I do feel that he may have misunderstood our guarantee since we felt this was a major benefit. (This is similiar to the price match offered by companies such as Best Buy, Sears, etc) ARS has been asked to provide free estimates for solutions to his system in 2008, 2009, 2010 and May of 2011. This house was built in 1975 and offers significant issues with the location of the furnace in a very restricted area. Obtaining proper air flow requires major changes to the ductwork and relocation of the furnace (gas lines, flue etc). Our pricing (done in November 2010 (the price in May was for zoning) ) reflected significant labor for these modifications. Also all of our pricing is standard and published so the salesman does not have the ability to modify pricing on his own. My project manager brought this request to my attention and the pricing issue. Even though I could not verify that we were "apples to apples" with the other company (guarantees, drug testing, duct work, filters, etc) I felt that this homeowner needed to do the job correctly and I agreed to honor our published price match guarantee including all of the duct modifications. At this time I also had manpower available and a large protion of my price model was labor so I chose to provide this at a discount. These pricing models and price match guarantee are all preprinted so there should not be any question concerning trust with a salesperson. He simply does not have that flexibilty to increase prices. Again we never felt a price match guarantee would be viewed as a negative. The homeowner did not do any work with ARS concerning this matter. I will be glad to explain this policy if the homeowner would like to contct me (David Dombrowski 919-291-4682) and we also would like to help him solve his problem and properly design and install his system Thank you

Start: My AC stopped producing cool air. The service man determined that it was leaking. He suggested, given the age of the unit, that I should consider getting a new one rather than replace the coils. I went on line and confirmed that was the best option. Next, ARS came to my house and suggested what I needed to do. They gave me a list of options and the cost of each. I made my choice (this was on a Friday) and they can on Monday to replace the unit. It took 6 hours. In addition, they changed some of the duct work as the old duct work was shooting all the air into only one room. They also put a pad under the AC unit (the original, a " builder's unit", had been put on dirt!). All in all, a good experience.
Description of Work: ARS replaced my Air Conditioner (which had developed a serious leak). They helped me pick a good unit and, as a bonus, redid some duct work that had been put in wrong (it wasn't distributing the air evenly). The work was done quickly and professionally.

They came out for a home warranty call. There was a lot of confusion because I had two zones (2 systems) not working properly. Several missed appointments that 'were not in the computer system', and miscommunications with the home warranty company. We have worked with several contractors and the home warranty company and have never had this kind of problems. Things got so bad we were without A/C for a week during some of the hottest part of the year, making the house unlivable. When they were to replace the evaporator coil, this company was unable to get the "equivalent' coil" that would fit in my system. They wanted close to $500 to make modifications. When we went with another company, they were able to get the correct coil without those additional charges. When I spoke with the manager about it, he seemed unaware of a large portion of the problem. When he could not sell me on the buisness, he just passed me off to another company without attempting to make things right.
Description of Work: The were too repair two seperate systems and replace a evaporator coil in one unit.

I feel that the customer has us confused with a different company. This entire situation was handled through a third party warranty service (AHS - American Home Shield not ARS - American Residential Services) On 7/18 AHS contacted ARS to provide a second opinion on a leaking coil for the homeowner. A different company (unknown ) had provided service to the homeowner and collected a service charge.(This is normal procedure for AHS) on 7/21 we went to the home and verified that the coil was leaking and needed replacement and we added refrigerant (invoice # 483733 - we collected $0 for this call) ARS notified AHS of the situation and was given authorization to order a replacement coil and the $ amount that the homeowner would have to pay that was not covered by insurance. This amount was $586 and was approved by AHS. It is AHS responsibility to contact the customer since they are the insurer to explain the charges that are not covered. On 7/27 ARS was recalled to the home since both systems were not cooling. The upstairs was working properly but the downstairs unit with the leaking coil needed additional refrigerant which we added. This was shown on invoice 485504 and we billed $0 for this call. On 8/3 the replacement coil arrived and we scheduled the repair for 8/4/2011. When we arrived the homeowner indicated that she was not aware of the additional charges require by her insurance company. After review, AHS sent an email to ARS indicating that they failed to contact the customer back on 7/21 to discuss the charges. AHS requested that we install the coil as quickly as possible. The homeowner in subsequent conversations indicated that she was not comfortable with using ARS and was going to request a 3rd contractor from AHS. I believe she may be confusing us with others since the homeowner stated that we had "charged her money" (she did not pay anything to ARS) and that we had multiple missed appointments (all of our appointments were kept and verified by AHS) It is always confusing when the primary person with financial responsibility is the insurance carrier. However ARS followed the exact instructions of AHS at all times and the main issue here was the error on the part of AHS to not notify the homeowner of their instructions on what we needed to charge the customer for items not covered under her policy. We are sorry for any confusion but it appears ARS did everything correctly per AHS. I will be glad to discuss this in more detail since we do not wish to have anyone feel not satisfied in any manner. I did not like them. They are like a nationwide service and they service anything. They do plumbing and all kinds of services. I thought they were totally rough and it cost me a fortune. The last time I used them was in my previous house for a service call. The Freon recharge service is only $25 but this was a total rip off. I wouldn't say he did anything bad; it's just that their job when they come to your house is to up sell you. They sell service contracts and its relatively high pressure pitch on the value of signing their service contracts. I think it's just dishonest. The service he gave me and what he sold me, I could have had it for a 100 bucks. All he did was a Freon recharge and I could have probably done that myself. I suppose he did fine but I was just overcharged. They are one of those who give you a sealed window and they have to be there for four hours. They were fine but it's hard for them to miss the four hour window. He wasn't a bad person but I think it's ethically unprofessional.
Description of Work: I used A R S Service Express about a year ago for a Freon recharge.

They are expensive. They were $5000 more than any other company we interviewed and the price quoted was for a unit that was too big. I didn't like that they didn't stay very long.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
As a follow up to my prior response, I discussed the estimate with the project Manager who was at her home from 5:30PM to appx 7PM when it appeared they were preparing for dinner. Mr. Langdon then returned to the office and ran a manual J load on the home and completed the estimate and emailed it as requested. He followed up 4 times but did not make contact. My concern is that the home had a significant addition from the original space and the Manual J load indicated that a larger unit was required than was there previously. ARS quoted a larger unit as indicated, duct work replacement to correctly service the home AND an electronic zoning system (similiar to an office space) with multiple zones and thermostats to keep the comfort levels balanced in the home. This easily represents the $5000 difference since we were quoting a different design and system than anyone else based upon our computer calculation to ASHRAE standards and current code. With our system, we offer a temperature guarantee which is very important on these very hot days.

It was fine. It just depends on who you get. I think they are pretty good. They have some really good people then they have a couple of people who are just not good.
Description of Work: ARS heating and Air has done several things. They put in a new heat pump and most recently they had to come out and repair it. They replaced a part and it was free of charge.

They are very good at explaining what they are going to do and doing exactly what they said they would. It was a very competitive price. The workers were cordial and businesslike. They were very efficient. When I was inspecting the systems later, they just did some extra things and never even mentioned it. That's the level of service they provide. After they were finished, I was going through it on my own and saw something I didn't understand. I called and I told them that I needed someone to come out and explain it to me. Somebody was out the next day and explained it to me very well, so that's hard to beat. Everything is holding up very well. There were some discounts that were available and they did the paperwork for us and made sure that we knew what the different discounts were. They came out in the morning the day they were supposed to arrive. They were already there waiting for me to wake up. I would use them again in the future if the need arose. I wouldn't use anybody else.

I called ARS when my AC died and they didn't have any appts that day but made an appt for the following one (another night of sleeping in 85 degrees). The young man came out and although he was very polite and professional, I do not believe his diagnostics were accurate (or at a minimum, he did not present all options for repair). He diagnosed the issue as leaky coils and gave a rough estimate of $2400 to replace (but recommended a full system replacement and called the office to set up time with a project manager so that they could give me quotes/financing on a new unit). I asked if he might be able to add refrigerant so that a) I could sleep that evening with some cooling and b) I would have more time to evaluate my repair options since I am selling my house. He did not recommend that option and would not warrantee it, but agreed to do it. Then he was unable to get the system restarted and told me that it was due to a bad thermostat (not sending a signal). The thermostat worked fine when he first arrived (he had turned it on to isolate the right fan unit)! So another $325 added to the repair estimate to fix that. I decided to get another opinion and (based on Angies List remommendations) call Morrissey Mechanical. The service tech was closing up (it was 5 pm) but said he would go ahead and swing by. He arrived, diagnosed a broken float switch (the system did NOT need replacing), he added refrigerant and said the thermostat was fine! Total cost of the repair/service call: $250!!! (Did not charge for the after hours call). AND I got to sleep in comfortable temps last night ;-) I will not be using ARS again.
Description of Work: Tried to diagnose AC unit malfunction. Was not able to repair system. Received an estimate for repair and also a follow-up appt with a project manager to "sell" me a new system.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
I am sorry that this customer feels that there was a misdiagnosis of the major problem with this unit. Please note that no repairs were done or charged to the customer for this system by ARS. The customer paid only the basic service call to come to her home and review the problem. The main issue is the problem that the unit was low on refrigerant. This was confirmed by the second company since they added and charged for refrigerant. HVAC systems are closed systems and are not supposed to require refrigerant (It does not like refilling oil in a car - it does not get "used up") If there is a leak in the coil, the added refrigerant was wasted and the coil needs to be replaced or if possible repaired. She does not indicate if the other group performed a leak check to determine why this was required. The broken float switch would present similiar problems to a problem in the low voltage of the tstat and this would have been caught if any work was actualy performed. The customer would never have been charged for this. If the customer would contact me directly as Manager (David Dombrowski cell 919-291-4682) I will gladly reemburse her the $99 for the service call.I would also request that she contact the company that did the repairs and ask if they performed a leak check to determine why the refrigerant was low to avoid any future issues. Thank you.
