I purchased the Angie's list deal for $99 for $200 worth of services. This was no deal. I called ARS and promptly scheduled an appointment for Monday May 14, from 4-7 pm. I got off work early to meet the plumber, and at 7 pm I got a call from the dispatcher who said the plumber would not be there for another 30 minutes. The plumber finally showed at 8:30 pm, and told me he would quote the work and knock $200 off the price because of the deal. I showed the simple work I needed to have done, Replacing a kitchen faucet and re-installing a toilet tank. The guy was obviously in a hurry to get home and quoted $540 for this simple job. I can't even imagine how he came to this number. I asked the man to leave the quote and I'd think about it. He took the documentation with him and promptly left. This morning I called my go-to plumbers, who quoted $200 for the job. I will never use ARS plumbing after this experience. The man made me feel like I was a fool who could be taken advantage of. Please refund this deal as I will not be hiring ARS plumbing for any work.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
I am very sorry that there was any misunderstanding with this homeowner. ARS apologizes for being late to the call but unfortunately the plumber assigned to this call was delayed doing repairs on a prior appointment. The homeowner did purchase the $200 deal from Angie’s list which gave credit for $200 towards any plumbing service. Typically there is a base service call of $69 to the home but ARS did not charge this as an additional way of our thanking the homeowner for purchasing the certificate. The plumber reviewed the work that was requested and it was priced accordingly. Please note that all of our prices are published and this book pricing is shared with the homeowner before any work is started. The published price for adding new supplies and installing a new faucet was quoted directly from the published book at $316. The additional work requested involving the toilet was also priced directly from the plumbing price book at $224. This total of $540 for all work with the breakdowns and codes was presented in writing on est # 436683 which was left with the homeowner. The certificate in the value of $200 would have applied so the net amount shown on the estimate for all work was $340. All of our work carries a 1 year guarantee. ARS also carries $ 5 million + liability insurance, drug tests and background checks all employees, and offers 24 hour emergency service with the phones staffed by employees at all times. The homeowner declined our estimate. The homeowner mentions that they had the work performed by their “go-to” plumber for a total of $200. I am glad that there were able to secure a good price but I can not compare our pricing since I do not know the other plumbers quality of materials used, warranty terms, insurance liability or drug testing policy. I can assure everyone that the pricing used at ARS is not at the discretion of the individual plumber but is set at our office for consistency and proper value. This method allows us to audit all charges to assure compliance with standard competitive pricing. It is noted above that the charge was $540 but there was in fact no charge made to this homeowner, only an estimate. We have been in this area for over 38 years and again I deeply apologize that this homeowner was not comfortable with our service. We would be glad to assist with any needs at any time in the future and we are sorry for any negative experience in this case. If the homeowner would like to discuss this, my personal cell phone as Manager at ARS is 919-291-4682 Thank you David Dombrowski.

I hesitated on whether or not I wanted to write a review of ARS because I haven't used them in over 9 months. Further, I wasn't entirely sure that their service was as bad as I thought until I had some time to settle into a new provider. Now that my AC and heating system has been serviced by a new provider since July last year, and I've had time to evaluate, I can safely say that ARS is out for your money. Please understand that we used ARS for three years and I can say that we had called upon them 2-3 times per year to fix out AC unit, usually in July or August. Two problems usually plagued our system. A capacitor in the main unit outside would blow and ARS would have to replace it, usually 2-3 times in a 30-day span. One time, I recall that the newly installed capacitor blew on the technican two times as soon as he turned the unit back on, and he had to replace them again in one visit. The second issue had to do with drainage. Our drain pan would get full in the attic and the unit would automatically shut off so as not to overflow and leak through the ceiling. I'd have to manually scoop out the water and flush it so that I could get the unit to function properly again. ARS had repeatedly come out to "fix" the drainage that was working just fine before they came out for their routine maintenance prior to the summer months. My guess is that the technican inadvertantly bumped the drainage pipe while servicing our unit, but the fact that it happened for three consecutive summers is a little odd. But they still charged me a service call to fix the problem that they likely caused as the unit was draining perfectly before they arrived. I recall that the technician had told me our unit was too old and we needed a new one about 2 years ago. He said we could take our chances, but he gave it six months (keep in mind it was two years ago when he said this). The system is still alive and kicking. So, last July, when our unit failed again (as it usually did in July), I decided to try another provider. They came out, repiared the unit in record time, and even permanantly fixed our drainage issue in the attic. I asked the technician for his opinion on getting a new unit and he indicated that our current system still had a few more good years left in it so long as it was serviced and maintained properly. For the record, I haven't had a problem with my system since July. The capaitor did not blow 2-3 times this year, like it had every single year the first three years I lived in the home. This is the first time in four years that my unit was serviced once and just worked the rest of the year. It was only after I have had some time to evaluate the new service that I can now safely say that ARS does not appear to know what they are doing, at least in Knightdale, NC. Their technicians are always trying to sell me something I don't need. They charge more than the provider I use currently. All in all, I would not recommend them. They were a mess.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
ARS feels that you may have us confused with a different company - please contact us - 919-291-4682 - David Dombrowski - Our records do not match the report filed by the homeowner and we would appreciate the opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings - This home was built in 2004 so it is only 8 years old. The system was not installed by ARS. Our first service call to the homeowner was on 7/3/09 for a defective capacitor – The homeowner has AHS, a warranty service which uses many different providers. We replaced the capacitor and charged the warranty company – nothing was billed to the homeowner. On 1/23/10, we performed a system tune up which is a preventative maintenance program for a charge of $89. There was nothing wrong with the system at this time. On 4/30/10, we replaced the remaining 2 capacitors and collected a total of $98. On 5/8 10 (the next week) we were called because of water in the primary drain pan – there was a dip in the drain line which we repaired and there was no charge to the customer. On 5/16/10, the secondary drain line filled with water – we leveled the pan and made sure everything was operational – there was no charge for this service. Finally on 8/14/10, we found a wire burnt on the compressor which we repaired. The unit was reviewed and was noted to be pulling high amps indicating a potential problem. The unit was working fine at that time. We charged an $89 service call and $39 for repairs. We quoted a price on a replacement compressor in case it should again fail and suggested that they consider an option on a replacement unit since the compressor is the heart of the system. We have not been there since. The homeowner states that we were there in July 2011 for a charge of $500 In all of our visits ARS only charged a total of $226 to the homeowner. We feel there may be confusion between AHS (the warranty company) and ARS since the data does not match. We have not been in this home for over 2 ½ years and we are confused to receive such a negative review with no contact in all of this time or any complaints. Again I request the homeowner to call me directly so we can reassure him that with 38 years in the area and over 250 employees, we are here to stand by him. Thank you.

I used ARS for over 15 years. They were expensive but seemed OK. They were usually prompt and professional. Last year I decided to not renew my annual contract. ARS sent me a letter asking why and promised to send me a $10 gift card if I would explain why i did not renew. This is the letter I sent: "One thing that I could always count on when the technician came for a maintenance call was that he would try to sell me something. Fortunately it was something that I could always pleasantly decline like a humidifier. On the last call, this spring, I noticed that your tactics have changed. This time the tech was trying to find something to tell me had to be fixed. And he found the same repair for both units. I really feel that I had been ripped off for over $700 in unnecessary repairs. I have spent a lot of money with ARS and now I have lost confidence in you. I cannot longer trust you to look out for my best interests as I think you treat your customers like an ATM machine." I never got a reply and of course never got the promised gift card!

We met Rodney with ARS at a home show and signed up for a free estimate. Rodney came out and was polite, professional and knowledgable. He did a complete survey of our attic and crawl space and left no stone unturned. He gave advice with the statement "if it were my home I would..." and always provided a lower cost alternative which was much appreciated by us new homeowners. It would have been easy for any other contractor to come in and sell us services we didn't need. Example: our crawl space was in pretty bad shape, or so we thought. Rodney explained that it would certainly help his bottom line to replace all of the insulation down there but it wasn't necessary since really only a few batts needed to be replaced. Rodney also advised that for maximum efficiency we could install 2 attic fans (one for each portion of the attic) but the really need was in the upper attic since that's where we noticed the temperature difference and if we were going to spend money, he would advise we spend it there. We received a discount for the home show and also tax credits for the energy efficient items that we installed. Rodney was great, his crew was efficient and cleaned up after themselves. I would recommend ARS to anyone looking for an honest company.
Description of Work: We ended having Rodney's team put a vapor barrier in the crawl space, replace a few battings of insulation in the crawl space, install loose fill insulation in the attic to bring it up to code and then some, paint the upper attic (split level home) with radiant barrier paint, install a solar attic fan in the upper attic, installed baffles since there were none previously, put barriers around recessed lighting to hold insulation away from hot light fixture, and installed a new attic access cover that was energy efficient instead of the old plywood that was there before.

They kept after it and kept after it until it was done. They are excellent. I have never seen anyone go over, above and beyond with what they had to do. My daughters use them and everyone else around uses them. I've never heard anything bad about these guys; i love them.
Description of Work: They have done work for me in the past but in January they replaced my AC and heating system. They were here more often than not because every time the AC and heat would be on, it was very noisy and would pop. They had to take the paneling off my walls to keep the duct work from popping; they put it back without causing any damage at all.

Thank you for kind response and your support. In researching your comments concerning our follow up, our notes indicates that we left a message on your phone at the time the service was scheduled. However we only left one message and we did not follow up again. This is not acceptable to ARS standards. Thank you for pointing out this to us. We will create a improved follow up system based on your comments. As our thanks to helping us, I would like to send you a check for $50 to enjoy a nice dinner on us. Again thank you for helping us improve our customers service and follow up. David Dombrowski 919-291-4682

The telephone operator responded promptly and set up an urgent appointment with the plumber. She checked the plumber's whereabouts to let me know the timeframe in which the plumber would arrive. Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
I am confused about the homeowner’s comments and I would like for them to call me personally if possible. The rating is based upon the claim that appx $500 worth of work was performed on May 1st but we did not finish the job. In addition they mention we quoted an additional $2000 to $3000 for other options. Our records indicate that we were at the home on 10/15/2011, over 7 months ago. We were called to remove a blockage from the main line. Using a k-60 machine with a 5/8” cable, we removed the blockage in the main line and everything was working fine. We placed a 30 day warranty on future blockages and never received any other calls. The cost of this service was $486. The reason this was so high is that the home did not have a 2 way cleanout fitting. This required us to work all the way back from the master bath which is very time consuming. We offered, as an option, our installation of this two way fitting, placing a camera through the entire system, and power jetting the main line which returns the pipes to an almost new condition for clearance. This has a 6 month warranty against all obstructions and cost $1311. We never quoted $2000 or more and we left him with an open drain system. If another plumber quoted $500 to install the fitting, camera the system, jet the system, and offer the warranty, then there must be a communication issue. This type of replacement (a repair does not require one) requires a permit from Wake Forest and a subsequent inspection by the Wake Forest inspector. This alone adds almost $100 to the cost. If this permit and inspection was not done for the $500, then the work is illegal and may be tagged by the city. Again I would like for the homeowner to call me since we did the original work for our estimate, kept the warranty, have had no complaints for 7 months, and offered him a legal option for some point in the future. ARS will not violate the law and jeopardize the homeowner property simply to provide very low cost option. Thank you again. David Dombrowski 919-291-4682 Manager ARS

ARS replaced a capacitor on the downstairs system under warranty. While they were there, I had them do a diagnostic on the upstairs system. I had run both systems at a colder than usual setting because the 10 year parts and labor warranty is about to run out. The downstairs system ran fine but the upstairs system never cooled lower than 78 degrees. Scott came out with a ?supervisor?trainer? Scott was fine and the supervisor identified that the upstairs unit had ice on the condensor coils. Scott checked with a leak detector and was advised to adjust it to it's most sensitive setting. Then the unit beeped a lot. I am going to get a new condensor coil and TXV metering device on a 10 year old system. I will create a new entry when the work is done. They were able to collect the needed replacement parts in just a few hours. It was one of the first hot days of the year, yesterday so it was not surprising that they were running late. They were scheduled from 1 to 4 and about 3 I got a call that they were running late. They arrived about 5:30. It was good for me since I was trapped at home and processed paperwork I had avoided for a long time. Everyone I spoke to seemed competent and clear. From making the appt, being notified they would be late, the techs, the parts guy, and the person who confirmed when the work will be done and that it was under warranty. I gave them a B a few months ago because the quality of the techs seemed to vary a lot. They mailed me $80. They deserve this A. Now we will see how they do on the next visit. The supervisor topped off my Puron level so the upstairs would cool better until they do the big repair. I do not know how Carrier makes any money since they have done so much warranty work over the last 10 years.

Things went very well. The technicians were always professional and arrived during the time window specified. It wasn't always the same technician, but that's okay. The sales agent (for the 2 HVAC units we replaced) was knowledgeable and friendly. In fact, when we needed last-minute HVAC service in Virginia, we called the sales agent for help connecting us to someone in Virginia. Price is not the most expensive, but it isn't anywhere near the cheapest. Regarding responsiveness, we have had great service except once. We waited for an estimate for a job to reroute ducts but never received one. I would recommend this company.
Description of Work: We have used this company for years to service our heating and cooling needs through a year-round maintenance contract. We've also used them to replace both of our HVAC units over the last couple of years.
