Very well, starting with the project manager John Dewald. We obtained multiple bids for the job, and John worked with us to find the best systems, discounts, and rebates--and for significantly less than other companies. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about a new HVAC system that they consult with John before making any final decision. The removal and new install was on schedule. The crews were efficient and polite. The new systems are working well, and are energy bills have started to decline! I would definitely use ARS again.

Sometimes you just know a long term relationship is going bad and you try to ignore it, because getting out seems too hard. But after reading the ARS review from October 31, 2013 I had to laugh. I hate to write bad reviews, but we barely escaped this reviewer's fate, having heard the dreaded MOLD story twice a year since having ARS install our humidification system. If the installation was going to create the potential of mold, shouldn't we have been told before we installed it? But by the time we got to the black light and mold saga, we had become deeply suspicious of ARS and their sales techniques. The old Metro company had installed our entire HVAC system in 1997, and maintained it through ARS's purchase of Metro until last year when we just snapped. Everything Metro does feels like a hustle or an up-sell. Everything. To ARS, a functioning HVAC system does not exist, or so it seems. Something is always leaking, dripping, rusting, or about to explode and you had better let them fix it!!! But when you let them, more troubles seem to arise. Our $6K air cleaners burnt out their control panels after warranty. New panels were so expensive, they recommended we put in MORE new air cleaners. We actually did let them replace our entire systems -- up and down -- because we were too stupid to know better. But our new systems were not compatible with our old thermostats. So we needed new thermostats. Then it took 3 more trips to get the light working in one of them. Then one of them failed. They came and replaced it with the old kind of thermostat--the one we'd been told was incompatible. Then a bunch of coolant ran down an inside wall after an installation of a coil. Not saying they did it; just saying it was an odd coincidence. Then they left gas leaking in our attic. Not much. Not a huge danger. But dang. Dealing with ARS and trying to sort the necessity from the hype just wore us out. But by then we were in to them for . . . probably $20,000 in repairs over the years. Just guessing here. We feel so stupid. It felt as if someone at ARS had pegged us as pigeons--and plump, stupid ones at that. And we were. We got what we deserved. We kept them on because (1) we were lazy, and (2) we are ignorant about HVAC and (3) they had installed EVERYTHING here and knew where the bodies were buried, so to speak. But eventually, being overwhelmed by suspicion, we did not renew our service contract. At the recommendation of an HVAC parts dealer, we hired Nolan HVAC, a small, local company. What a breath of fresh air. And we haven't spent a nickel in almost 18 months. Everything just keeps ticking along, and they assures us our system is working fine. What is good about ARS? They come on time for service visits. They do okay with emergency visits -- our longest wait was 4 days. Their repairmen are overwhelmingly polite. One should give credit where credit is due. If you are a mechanically inclined person who knows when to second guess and how to say NO then you will probably be okay with ARS. We need someone we feel we can trust. Because, yes, we are stupid.
Description of Work: This was our last semi-annual service visit after 15 years with ARS Metro.

ARS has been our HVAC service company for over 10 years. We have annually paid for their HSP plan to do a check on our system twice a year. We've had our entire HVAC system replaced by them, including ductwork, in pieces over that time. Yesterday they came to do our heat check. The technician replaced our whole house filter. After doing so, he said we had mold (in his words "growth"...he seemed to be trained not to use the word mold for some reason) on the exterior of the air handler box where the coil is located, and said he recommended that we install a UV light because he suspected that there was also "growth" inside the air handler box where the coil is located. He said ARS was having a "special" price only for October on this UV light and that if we paid for it yesterday (the last day of October, we could take advantage of that special price. He also saw that we had "growth" on the floor vents downstairs in our house and took a photo. I explained that our ductwork had been replaced by ARS about 6 years ago. He said that the "growth" should not be happening, and that he would recommend to his superior that ARS do at least complimentary duct cleaning, if not a complimentary replacement of our floor vents. He said, and I quote, "I'll go to bat for you". All of this sounded great, so we paid him for the UV light in advance of the installation. He said that ARS would call me within a couple of days to schedule the services. Problems: 1- today I noticed that he did not give us the 10% discount on the UV light, as is customary for HSP customers. He instead gave a $10 discount...I believed it was just an oversight. So I decided to call today to address that, and to go ahead and schedule the installation of the UV light so I didn't have to wait for them to call me. I wasn't at all concerned at this point and firmly believed that the discount issue could be easily resolved over the phone. 2- When I called ARS at 1:30pm, I spoke to Dana, who said that according the their records, the technician had installed the UV light yesterday. This is patently untrue, and my husband crawled under the house to inspect the air handler to see if the hole that would be necessary to install the light had been cut in the box to install it. There was no hole, and nothing there had changed, as the technician had showed us a photo of the box yesterday and pointed out where the opening would have to be cut. Dana said she would call the technician to get confirmation of the installation and call me back. I also told Dana what the technician had said about the duct cleaning and/or vent replacement, and she said she would ask the technician about that when she called him. Obviously I knew the light had not been installed, and thought for sure that Dana would call back and apologize for the mix up, and schedule the installation of the UV light and the duct work. 3- When Dana called back at 1:44pm, she still claimed that the UV light had been installed. This, again, is patently untrue. She said she would check again, and call me back. I started to become very concerned with this entire process, so I attempted to call Dana back at 2:15 and only got voicemail when I asked the receptionist to patch me through to her. I left a voicemail to tell her that I'd had second thoughts about this whole deal and wanted to come to their office, pick up my check, and write them a check for just the filter that had been replaced. After waiting about 35 minutes for a call back, I went ahead and stopped payment on the check I wrote for the filter and UV light (which my bank will charge $8 to do), and called Dana again at 2:50 and left a voicemail saying that I had stopped payment and would like them to let me know where to go to write them a check for just the filter. It's now 3:15 and I still have not heard back from ARS. I have to agree with some of the other posters on Angie's List about this company. I have been with them since they were a small local company named Metro and at that time they were a top notch company. They were since bought by a huge national company called Servicemasters, and changed the Metro name to ARS. I believe they have gotten too big for their britches, so to speak. I'm convinced that the technicians are being trained to push new goods and services to customers that they probably don't really need, and obviously their customer support leaves much to be desired these days. I don't blame the technician one bit in this situation. He was very friendly, polite, professional, and was just toting the company line as he was trained to do. I think most of the problems with this company lies in the back office, with folks who never lay eyes on the customer, and really couldn't give a darn about them. If I hadn't decided to call them today, I might have just flushed $339 down the toilet, as they would just have proceeded under the false assumption that services were rendered, and a happy customer had resulted. I think when this HSP plan runs out next year, I'll be looking for a new HVAC company....a nice small local one that provides more customer centric service. Update: Dana finally called at 3:25 and said that she finally confirmed what I already knew to be true...that the UV light had not been installed. She wanted to schedule the installation of the UV light and have some other group come out to "inspect" the ductwork (not give a complimentary cleaning, as was promised). I told her she needed to listen to her voicemails, that I had already stopped payment on the check. She stated she would have to contact the accounting department to inquire what I needed to do to pay them for just the filter. Update 11/17/2014: Just wanted to add one further item. I sure was glad I stopped payment on that check! I went to the ARS office to pick up my check from them, and at that time they assured me that it had not been processed through their accounts receivable system. Lo and behold, the next week, the check was presented for payment at my bank and was of course refused because I had put a stop payment on it. Also, I find it odd that every other review on Angie's list of D or F received a response from this company asking to make contact and make things right.....except mine. I guess they knew they were totally in the wrong and had no chance at all to "make things right".

They came out PROMPTLY. I thought we would suffer a few days in the July heat but they came right out. We had a previous company that we used but they kept putting us off and putting us off. They would send a guy to replace the Freon every 10 days or so. They said we would need $2500 in repair! Finally, we called ARS and the guy FIXED the problem. The AC lasted another summer and I am truly grateful. The AC will need replacing next year and we will ONLY call ARS to do the job!

The installer took time to explain everything to me, including telling me that water should be shut off at the street rather than indoors because of older style in my home. I was uncomfortable with the new toilet's seat because there was too much space in the hinges and it moved from side to side. Since my old seat was in good condition, he took off the new seat and left it for me and put the old seat back on. He also checked out the plumbing throughout the house and in the crawl space to make sure there were no problems with any other connections or faucets and no leaks anywhere. He said that service came with the deal, but I wasn't expecting it. In all, he spent quite a long time in my house and told me of any problems that might occur in the future and what to do about them. I appreciated his attention to detail, and I was quite satisfied with the work. The new toilets works very well and I'm happy with it.

The man who came out was very good. He was a little exasperated with me. I asked him about another thing and it seemed like I was not supposed to do that. I asked him what it would cost for a pop up in my bathtub upstairs. I was extremely pleased with his service. He did a good job on that and the toilet works really well. He was just great. I was actually very very satisfied with the deal. The product was extremely good and the installation seemed to be just right. I just seemed to be getting that I was not supposed to ask him any other questions because he was not very happy about it. He may have had a tough day. People have bad days but I was very happy with his work. The actual work that he did was very good. The toilet was great and the price was excellent. I was very happy about it.

ARS sold and installed the two systems we have. We had excellent experiences during the installs and ARS has done the inspections in the years since the installs. They arrive promptly, take care to protect the house as they work on the units and give a through description of what they find. Our units are fairly new but did require some adjustment and cleaning. The only down side is they do try to up sell add-on such as uv disinfection, and surge protection but there is no pressure , only how it could help. The price was a special deal. I plan to use them in the future.

After purchasing Angie's List special over weekend, ARS called me early Monday morning to schedule. Richard arrived a few minutes early and was very professional and polite throughout the install. After completing the routine toilet replacement, he even looked at a few other plumbing matters without trying to "sell," like the hot water heater (11 yrs old) and confirmed that it is at end of life and should be replaced soon. Also looked for and located the main cutoff valve, which I wasn't sure where it was because it is behind drywall in basement bedroom with a small boxed door to access it. Great service and professional job.

I purchased The Big Deal for a new Gerber toilet and was contacted the same day to schedule the installation. Ben (the installer) called while on his way and arrived exactly on time. He discussed what the Deal would and would not cover, and then got to work removing our old toilet and installing the new one. He patiently answered all my questions, and also asked as he worked about preferences for things like caulk around the bottom (we have wood flooring). He did a great job, cleaned up after himself, made sure the toilet was not rocking and would flush properly. It was a most pleasant experience and we are VERY happy with the service and our new toilet! I have seen some unfavorable reviews of ARS, however I have nothing but the best to say about my experience. I would definitely use them again in the future.

It went very well. I was only able to get one toilet through Angies List but ARS agreed to provide a second toilet at the same price and details. The technician found a bad valrve and suggesting replacing it which I first thought was too expensive, but upon checking some previous work I decided the cost was in line and had it done/. I was very pleased with the work and the result.

The technician arrived promptly but did not understand the work that was to be done. The problem had to be explained to him. He then stated that he did not have the equipment to test the system and find the leak on his truck and was not trained to do this work. He called his supervisor and then offered to return with the necessary equipment. However, what his supervisor told him to do was: 1) not what the gas utility required, and 2) significantly more costly and time consuming than the correct procedure. I refused to pay for the service call and contacted another provider.

Response from ARS Rescue Rooter
Our technician met primarily with the Angies list member husband and we feel this may simply be an issue of communication. To recap the situation, the gas company had shut off the gas flow for safety issues. As a recommended vendor of PSNC, ARS was an option to contact to perform the repair work. When the customer contacted ARS, they were told that there would be a service charge of $99 to come to the home, review the situation and prepare a written quote for needed repairs. Because of the extreme danger that accompanies a gas leak, there is a set procedure that we follow per industry and gas company guidelines. This procedure involves isolating the gas line, pressurizing the line, searching for the leak, making repairs, and keeping the line under pressure for 24 hours. At that time we return to verify that there is no loss of pressure and all leaks are secure and the home is safe. It is only after the second trip to the home that we feel proper protocol has been followed and the home is safe. PSNC is then notified that a professional repair was completed. Our technician was fully capable of performing this process but it does require 2 trips to the home. He did contact his supervisor to confirm the estimate since a second visit is required. ARS quoted on invoice # 538855 dated 8/30/13 the diagnostic charge of $99 (which was for the initial visit) and an additional charge of $149 to perform the steps listed above. This was a total of $248 for 2 visits and the required repairs. The homeowner initialed both the invoice for $99 and the recommendation sheet for the additional $149 acknowledging this would be the total charge. However the homeowner refused to pay for the initial $99 fee and initialed the statement that he refused payment. ARS received no payments from the homeowner. Again we feel that there was some sort of miscommunication since the total charge of $248 was certainly within normal charges for this amount of work scheduled to be done to proper safety standards and with associated warranty. ARS will not perform gas line repairs that do not meet safety standards under any circumstances. We will contact the homeowner and try to determine where the misunderstanding occurred but I also invite them to contact me directly as Manager at 919-291-4682. Thank you for your consideration. The plumber had some trouble with the seal for the new toilet, it appeared to have an irregularity, so it leaked. He patiently reinstalled it and put in a new seal and the leak was fixed. Later we discovered that the toilet rocked back and forth (as the old one was done.) I called ARS and they sent a more senior plumber out. It turned out that there was some sort of irregularity in the floor. The senior plumber fixed that (I know not how) and it is fine. They were very prompt in coming back out and fixing what was my problem not theirs.

We had an almost completely clogged culvert drain under our driveway, had other groups say they could clean it but then decided it was too large. ARS/Raleigh decided they could, but would need to return with larger equipment,. They did the next work day, did the work when we were at work, and removed an impressive amount of dirt, rock and roots. They also regraveled around the culvert. The drain is now entirely clean and free-flowing. The only thing they could have done better, in hindsight, is ask us where the mud/rock should be left. They spread it out nicely over the ground around the driveway, but that's pretty visible, so the next weekend we raked that all up and moved it to a less conspicuous location. Not a big deal, and given we were away, I don't know what else they could/should have done. Overall. 5/5.
