I used to be a big fan of Allen Kelly and Company Inc...until about a couple of weeks ago. Several years ago I needed to replace my upstairs HVAC unit. I researched several companies and chose Allen Kelly. From everything that I could find out, they had a good reputation and their estimate was competitive with the other bids I had received. They installed the new system and I was impressed with their work. The next year, my downstairs unit needed to be replaced. Again I called on Allen Kelly. When my next door neighbor's unit needed to be replaced, I recommended Allen Kelly and they installed his new system. When my daughter's townhouse needed a new unit, I recommended Allen Kelly. In fact, whenever the topic of HVAC units came up in conversations with family and friends, I would always recommend Allen Kelly...but not any more. Two weeks ago my daughter called and said that her air conditioning was not working. I told her to call Allen Kelly. The unit was only 1.5 years old, it had to be something trivial especially since Allen Kelly had come out 6 months earlier to perform their one year installation checkup. The tech from Allen Kelly determined that the drain for the AC coil was clogged and he flushed it out. He told my daughter what the problem was and showed her what came out of the drain. She asked "What is that and where did that stuff come from". His reply "I have no idea". Here is your bill for $177. My daughter felt that she was being taken advantage of especially since they had been out 6 months prior to perform the 1 year checkup on the system. She calls me up and tells me what the tech said. She showed me what the tech cleaned out of the drain (and took pictures). It was a sandy dirty substance that you would not normally find in an AC coil drain pan. I used to work for my father during the summer cleaning AC coils so I know what the stuff looks like. When the tech said that he had no idea where the stuff came from, that tells me he also knew that it was foreign material in the drain. I also know that it is very rare for a drain to stop up after a year and half. Apparently when they installed the unit, there was some sort of debris left in the pan that eventually stopped up the drain. So I called up Allen Kelly and talked to their "Service" Manager Ellen. She said that she would have to talk to the tech that performed the work and get back to me. This was on Tuesday, June 4th. On Thursday, she had still not called me back so I called her. She said that there was nothing that she could do but she would talk to Allen Kelly and get back to me. After waiting until the following Tuesday and not hearing from her. I decided to call Allen Kelly myself. I explained the situation and he said that he would have to talk to the tech and get back to me. Finally on Friday morning, after not hearing from him, I called back. The receptionist said that Mr Kelly was out of town and would I like to leave a message on his voice mail. I declined and said that I would call back on Monday. Later that afternoon, I decided that I should leave a message on his voice mail so I called back. The receptionist said that Mr Kelly had left for the day...so was he out of town or not? I left a message and asked Mr Kelly to please call me back. It has now been almost 3 weeks and no word from Mr.Kelly. Oh, I forgot to mention...after not hearing from either the "Service" manager or Allen Kelly, I called the salesman who sold me my systems. He assured me that this was not typical service for Allen Kelly and Company Inc and that he would talk to Mr. Kelly and get to the bottom of it. Several days later he did call me back and said that he had not been able to get in touch with Mr. Kelly but would keep trying. It's been almost three weeks now and nothing. What kind of company treats customers this way over $177? I am looking for a new HVAC company.
Description of Work: Performed service for a clogged AC drain on a system that they had just inspected 6 months ago. Refused to admit that they might be responsible.

Response from Allen Kelly and Company Inc
Customer feedback is greatly appreciated at Allen Kelly & Co., Inc. (AKC) We value our customers tremendously and welcome positive feedback as well as constructive criticism. We use feedback from our customers to improve our business in many different ways. Customer feedback provides us the opportunity to improve our work quality, efficiency, and overall level of service. It allows us to educate and advise consumers and businesses about our expertise, which is HVAC. Without customer feedback it is difficult to evaluate our performance from a customer’s perspective. Our customers are our evaluators and they grade us on each and every job. So, to all of our customers and prospective customers we encourage your feedback, input, and evaluations. Keep ‘em coming! Over the past 25 years we have received numerous testimonials from thousands of satisfied customers complimenting us on our quality of work, professionalism, high level of service and high touch. Many of these customers give accolades to specific individual employees at AKC, and compliment them for a job well done. Allen Kelly has built a successful organization for over two decades because he understands the value of good employees. So, when our customers give positive testimonials and mention specific employees, those employees are recognized and rewarded. We share these positive customer experiences with other employees and use this as a source of training in an effort for all employees to optimize their potential and meet AKC service standards. On the other hand, in our 25+ year existence we have (rarely) experienced customers that have disagreed with us and seen things in a different perspective, such as [member name removed]. We value this constructive criticism as much as all the positive testimonials. We take this criticism seriously. First and foremost we LISTEN to our customers. We do everything we can to satisfy our customers. And again we use this feedback to help improve our business for the future. Unfortunately, in some instances, usually when the outcome is not what the customer wants, our goal of customer satisfaction is not obtained. This is certainly an extremely rare occasion at AKC. We would not have a 25 year old and growing business if we were not providing customer satisfaction. We are in large part a word of mouth business. And thank goodness for all of our customers who have helped us grow over the years. Ok, now please allow us to address [member name removed] experience with AKC. We appreciate [member name removed] business in the past, and the referrals to his friends and families. We sincerely do. We are disappointed that [member name removed] is unhappy with our work and the decisions we made regarding his daughter’s recent HVAC service/repair needs. [member name removed] complaint was regarding his daughter’s HVAC system, not his own. We have exhausted attempts, and because [member name removed] does not feel like his daughter should pay for our services, we are seemingly unable to satisfy him. This is unfortunate. We always look at the positives from every situation. In this respect we are glad that [member name removed] wrote his comments. What a perfect opportunity to educate anyone that might be reading this. We are in the business of being a trusted source for all HVAC needs for residential homeowners and commercial building owners/tenants. Not only is our job to fix mechanical issues and provide clean air and comfort, but also to advise and educate. [member name removed] daughters situation is a perfect example of the importance of routine and proper maintenance on HVAC equipment. Professional maintenance on HVAC equipment is prudent for several reasons. The primary benefits of professional HVAC maintenance are as follows: • It helps prevent and mitigate the risk of untimely and costly repairs. A properly maintained HVAC system is less likely to fail • It increases efficiencies. The system will operate better. Higher efficiency means it cost less to operate. Dirty filters. Dirty coils. These type things create less efficiency and higher cost to operate • Extends the useful life of the HVAC equipment. Generally speaking a system that is properly maintained will have a longer useful life than a non maintained system We believe the primary reason for the HVAC service/repair need is because of the lack of proper maintenance on the subject equipment. We made an effort to provide these services at our normal rates. The offer was declined. Here are the facts and series of events as we see them: - Installed new HVAC equipment on 11-28-11. This is the subject equipment - Provided free ESA (energy savings agreement) – a/k/a preventive maintenance - This is for all new residential installs performed by AKC - Performed the free ESA on 7-13-12 – full comprehensive cleaning and diagnostic - On 6-4-13 (11 months)responded to a service call regarding subject equipment. Found that the drain line clogged and subsequently technician cleared the drain line; gave customer invoice for services rendered - $109 diagnostic fee plus $68 to clear the drain line = Total of $177 - Customer’s father contacted AKC and challenged the charge for service provided. Service Manager at AKC reviewed customer file/history and interviewed technician that did the work - Service Manager determined that equipment failure due to clogged drain line was not caused by faulty installation done 1.5 years prior; but rather most likely cause was normal course of operation and failure to properly maintain - We regret that [member name removed] feels differently. We regret that we were not able to provide 100% customer satisfaction in this case. We would like to use this as an example of why proper maintenance is wise. Of course we hope that AKC is everyone’s trusted source for HVAC maintenance, service, and replacement needs. Even if we are not we encourage that everyone who owns, or is responsible for, HVAC equipment, to have it properly maintained by a professional HVAC company.

Received estimates from 3 HVAC reps. Allen Kelly rep was straight with me about options, did not try to push me into buying more than I needed. Allen Kelly price was MUCH better than one HVAC rep and slightly better than the 2nd HVAC rep. But I liked the dual thrmostats ( 2 story house) and Allen Kelly was the only one that offered it affordably. The install went smoothly. The installers were pleasant

Initial consultation went great. Bob explained everything in great detail and gave me multiple options. We setup a time for the install and the team arrived promptly. There was an issue with the new unit (a bent fan part) which was replaced promptly. Communication was excellent. Would not hesitate to use them again.

First of all, Allen Kelly did some work on my previous house and they were awesome... so I thought I'd go back to them for more services. The first guy that showed up clearly didn't want to be here and rushed the job. He left doors open and the place a mess. On top of that, he charged me a $100 fee just for coming. This wasn't supposed to happen. I then never heard back from him and after I emailed him back, he said to call the office to get the follow-up. I called the office and they made it right. They credited me the $100 back towards the fee to come back and replace the damper. Overall, I thought they were very pricey and was disappointed in the overall experience. I appreciate them trying to make it right, but the price and overall experience left me not wanting to return.
Description of Work: We needed a zone damper switch replaced. It was obvious what the problem was and this was the primary issue. I figured while I had them here, we might as well just get a routine service for heating and AC. These services were all eventually completed.

Very happy with AllenKelly overall. I received multiple bids and AllenKelly came in competitive to the low side. During the bid conversation the gentlemen I spoke with was very knowledgeable, professional and did not try to BS his way through. The installation crew were on-time, friendly and had the unit installed by mid day. The state inspector came by a week later and was quite impressed with how the system was installed which was great to hear. I have another heat pump unit in the house that is likely on its last legs. I will be using AllenKelly for install when the time comes.

Contacted Allen Kelly on 06/26/2012, Sales Rep on 06/28/2012, system installed on July 10, 2012 Trane THANKS........ ALLEN KELLY FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND ANGIES SAVINGS
Description of Work: After becoming a member of angies list, I begin to check reviews of a/c companies in the triangle area. I ask several individuals that work for the city and co-workers in Cary, NC. It developed into a passion to find the best qualified company to install a new system, being that the a/c install/repair I had for over 10 years visited my house more than my parents. I called Allen Kelly and made a appointment. The sales Rep Bob Breed was on time and sat with me in the garage and explain every detail, and sold me not on the larger unit I was asking for, but a lower cost Energy Efficiency unit 5 ton Trane. The installers were on time and very professional, the only problem they encountered was my curiosity and questions. I hope future customers experience the excellent work ethic of these guys. My system was installed on July 10, 2012. I was more than please with the unit and changes that was made to install the new unit. I live in Durham outside RTP and distance was never a consideration when experience/pros. The only problem with the system I had since install was a blown fuse due to a power outage. Allen Kelly was out the next day and fix problem in less than 15 min and recheck system. I am on an equal pay plan with Duke Energy and have save over $810 since July and can not wait to see my savings when my pay year ends in May 2014.

Another company had recommended a higher-end, much more expensive heat pump...said it was the only option which would also qualify for the tax credit. The sales person for Allen Kelly listened to my usage patterns and made recommendations accordingly. He said I wouldn't get my money's worth if I went with the higher-end unit and instead recommended a considerably less-expensive option. He also informed me that the less-expensive, medium-range unit WOULD qualify for the tax credit as it was dependent on the combo of the outside unit and the inside air handler. He also let me know about a coupon they had on Angie's List. My quotes included actual part numbers, and I understand that this is key as it allows you to verify that you received the parts for which you were quoted. That said, Allen Kelly was the ONLY company from whom I received quotes that gave me this intel. My A/C went out of course during the 1st heat wave of the summer, and although Allen Kelly couldn't get to me house right away, they brought me window units as soon as I picked them for the install. There was a minor issue at my house caused by the installers, and Allen Kelly repaired it with no fuss. From start to finish, the way everything was handled has left me with a very positive impression of Allen Kelly. I would recommend them to anyone based on my experiences. Also, side note for anyone interested, the less-expensive, mid-range option has been great. With my new heat pump, I have kept the thermostat set a few degrees warmer than I did with the old one, yet the house feels just as cool if not cooler. My utilities bill has gone down as well.

They are consistently professional and offer quality service. We have and will continue to use them. The only, extremely mild criticism could be they are not rock bottom pricers (for which I don't blame them nor would I want the resulting service level) and they did not vacuum the attic area in which they worked, leaving metal shards that had to be cleaned up. That said, they protected the living space of the house well, arrived when they said, did what they said, did a high quality job, and I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I had my AC replaced last year when my old compressor failed (by another company) and it actually made things worse! After having the other company come out 4 times with no changes, I had 3 new contractors come in to give me new estimates. I got estimates ranging from $450 for a new plenum to $3700 to move the furnace, redo the plenum and all duct work. I went with the $450. These guys came in Friday morning and provide the lowest estimate for their work. From drawings on Friday morning, they were able to show up at 9:05 AM on Monday to do an install of a custom cut plenum. Imagine my surprise when we pulled off the old plenum and found a ~5" X18" piece of metal last year's guys installed covering the new coil outlet to make the old plenum fit the new coils. Needless to say I'll be having a discussion with those jokers. The increase in airflow to the second and third floors of my three story townhouse is immediately noticeable and I'm now able to actually turn off airflow to the basement almost completely. This is a huge improvement over both the original installation and the work that was done by another company last year. I would work with these guys again. - Bart

I would never use them again, nor would recommend them. I feel like I could have kept my same systems, and just added freon. The air not blowing out with any force, I am not feeling it coming out. Sometimes you can have the thermostat set at 74 degrees, but the temperature would not go below 76 degrees until late at night. I have not heard this happening in a unit. I am going to have to get a Train expert to look at my unit. I am afraid that once my warranty is out, I will have to pay a lot of money on this unit.

I hired Allen Kelly for their expertise, but they showed little of that on this job. They were unable to troubleshoot the Mitsubishi mini split units, because it took them a week to get them working. No one from Allen Kelly showed up for the mechanical or electrical inspections, and their work failed the electrical inspection. When they came back to rewire the units, the mini splits were blowing hot air. I ran out and caught the installer as he was leaving, and he told me that the unit would eventually start blowing cold air. Three hours later, I called and asked them to send someone else out to fix the unit. This repairman called Mitsubishi Tech Support, and they informed him that there was a button on the external unit that would determine how the unit was wired and correct itself! Allen Kelly sent me a bill which was a single number for the entire job. I asked my sales person for an itemized bill that showed the parts and labor. My salesperson sent me a new bill split into two numbers. One for each job. I have used Allen Kelly to maintain the units in my previous home for multiple years, and have been happy with them. However, I have a different opinion after using them for an installation. If the system they installed fails during the warranty period, I will call them. Otherwise I'll give my money to someone else
Description of Work: I hired Allen Kelly to perform two jobs at my house: Install 3 Mitsubishi mini split ductless heat pumps. The ductwork in my house is not easily accessible, so I installed the mini splits to provide additional heating and cooling in our main living areas. I also put a mini split in the garage which did not have any heating or air-conditioning capability. The mini split units are installed on the wall in each room, and then they are connected to an outdoor unit that provides condensation, electricity, and coolant. Allen Kelly tried to sell us 6 mini splits at first, and then determined they could only install 5. My wife and I decided that we would install 3 and see how well it went before we installed any more. The existing air handler for the heat pump in the house was installed in an attic crawlspace, and it needed to be relocated to a better location so that it could be serviced.

WE DID HAVE DIFFICULTY ON THIS INSTALLATION. SOME WAS ON US AND SOME WAS WITH THE SYSTEM. OUR SYSTEM SOFTWARE DOES NOT ALLOW A BREAKDOWN SUCH AS THE CUSTOMER REQUESTED. THE SALES PERSON GENERATED A BREAKDOWN AS CLOSE AS WE COULD TO HELP THE CUSTOMER. WE WERE GIVEN INCORRECT TROUBLESHOOTING INFO BY THE EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER AT THE ONSET OF THE START UP. After 19 years, our HVAC systems needed replacement. (The upstairs unit had failed.) A friend recommended Allen Kelly. We called and received an immediate response--the sales rep, Andy Corr, came over the same morning. We had several bids in previous years, in anticipation that these units would fail, but none was as thorough an evaluation of our needs as Allen Kelly. Their prices were comparable to the other bids we had received. They came back the next day to replace the unit that had failed, then returned a few days later to replace the lower unit. The install passed inspection. Overall, we were very pleased with the professionalism of the sales and install team and quick response we received.

Terrible. Allen Kelly and Company failed. The Allen Kelly sales agent was unresponsive.
Description of Work: We are new Angie's list members. Today, looking for recommendations for an A/C installation company, we were startled to see a favorable grade for a company that caused us a lot of grief. Even though the dates of the bad service we suffered are not current, we felt a debt to other Angie's list members to communicate the facts of our experience. At the beginning of the cooling season in 2009, our upper bedrooms were cool, then the A/C stopped working. We solicited bids and accepted the proposal from Allen Kelly and Company to replace A/C-Furnace serving upper level. The Allen Kelly sales agent ("Comfort Specialist") was articulate and seemed to be competent. On the basis of his recommendation, we agreed to the installation of a new furnace with a cooling coil different than the old one. Installation of the new coil and new furnace proceeded according to schedule. Technicians performing the installation cleaned up after themselves. After the new equipment was running, the house was hot - because the Allen Kelly A/C was not cooling. When we called, Allen Kelly was not able to schedule a repair tech until sundown, and when the tech arrived he was unable to figure out the problem. At the end of the next day, a different Allen Kelly tech arrived, spent three hours and discovered that the valve on the "different type of cooling coil" was shutting off, causing the outside unit to electrically "trip out" on motor temperature. The Allen Kelly sales agent offered no solution, reassuring us that the system would stabilize and we would be comfortable. Over the course of the next two months the Allen Kelly A/C limped along with poor performance. Finally our complaints triggered a response from the Allen Kelly sales agent in the form of a proposal to install more attic ductwork to increase airflow. We accepted the proposal and agreed to pay the extra money. A week later technicians installed ductwork, made a big mess, and left. The new ductwork didn't solve anything - the house was still hot. Our repeated calls to the sales agent were unanswered. Calls to the dispatcher at Allen Kelly with messages for the sales agent were unanswered. Eventually, at additional cost with another installer we replaced the Allen Kelly cooling coil with the correct unit and at the same time removed the extra ductwork Allen Kelly had prescribed, After that cooling coil was replaced with the correct unit, the A/C worked perfectly. Many months later, the upper level is cool and comfortable, even with recent record high temperatures in the region (105 degrees at RDU). Allen Kelly and Company failed in a fundamental way by creating a cooling system that did not, could not perform..

Extremely well! My upstairs AC stopped working completely. I fully expected to have to buy a new unit. I called Allen Kelly and scheduled an appointment. The serviceman, Jason, arrived on time and was very professional. He was able to service both of my AC's and replace our capacitor for the upstairs AC in more than reasonable time period. What I like best is he offered to show me that part he replaced and didn't try to sell me anything else. Very professional.I have other AC companies come in the past and they have always tried to sell me sometime!!

They were willing to let my husband help with some aspects to save money on the total bill. They didn't get here until late in the day, although we knew it would be in the afternoon. It was the day after we called though, so I was still impressed. The price was good. The tech was knowledgable and efficient. Everything is working properly and he was easy to work with.
Description of Work: Our heat pumps were not working properly. They came out, identified the problem, and corrected it.

My upstairs A/C had been giving me some trouble for a number of years. In July of 2011 I requested estimates from three of highest rated HVAC companies listed on Angie's List. The Allen Kelly representative seemed more intent on educating me and providing me with informations and information. In March of 2012, while Allen Kelly was servicing both my upstairs and downstairs systems, it was determined that my upstairs system was no longer servicable. At that time, since I had considered my options for eight months, I requested a confirmation of the price and subsequently authorized the replacement of my upstairs compressor and air handler. An installation date was then scheduled. On the installation date, two technicians arrived at the scheduled time and replaced both the air handler and compressor. The technicians went about their work in an efficient and professional manner, even though access to my access did provide some challenge. After several days utilizing both the heat and cool cycles, am pleased with my new system and will continue to utilize Allen Kelly on other family properties.
Description of Work: Replaced my 1-1/2 ton upstairs heat pump system.

Everything went very well from start to finish.
Description of Work: Approximately 3-4 months ago I noticed that my thermostat's display wasn't working, so there was no way to turn on my outdoor unit. After initial troubleshooting, I finally called my maintenance plan provider (not AK & Co) to address the problem. Their Service Tech, while very professional & courteous, was unable to resolve the problem after 4 1/2 hours, and replacement of the transformer. He informed me that further repairs would likely cost ~$1,500-$2,000, and suggested that I consult one of their sales reps to provide an estimate to replace my 12 year-old system since it was near the end of its life. He also informed me that the new programmable thermostat that I had purchased and installed would not work, and would also require replacement. Their Sales Rep arrived the following day, evaluated my system and provided me with Quote #1 which included a choice of 4 systems averaging $5,000 for replacement. I contacted two more highly-rated companies from Angie's List for additonal quotes. The second company provided Quote #2 - a choice of 5 systems averaging $5,500 for replacement, and a probable 2-week wait for installation. The final company, Allen Kelly & Co., arrived later the same day. Bob (Comfort Consultant) arrived right on time. He was friendly and professional, and listened as I explained the problem. I relayed the original Tech's notes, and Bob said he wanted to check the unit himself before evaluating it for replacement. IN ~30 MINUTES, BOB HAD THE SYSTEM RUNNING AND BLOWING AIR INTO THE HOUSE. I was stunned! Bob explained in layman's terms what he had done to correct the problem, and informed me that he still wanted a Service Tech to come out the same evening to follow-up on a couple of things, and to install the programmable thermostat. Marty (Service Tech) called ~30 minutes before arriving and immediately went to work to ensure that the system was fully functional and blowing cold air. He explained what he was doing and advised me on how to notice a freon leak. And even re-installed the programmable thermostat that the first company told me was no good. It works like a charm now. I'm extremely pleased with the level of service I received from Bob and Marty. Both gentlemen were very courteous, professional and knowledgeable, and didn't want me to incur unnecessary expenses. Had it not been for Bob's expertise, and willingness to assess the initial problem for himself, versus just preparing to sell me a new unit, I'd be out $5,000+ that I don't have. And, if not for Marty, I'd be purchasing a new thermostat and waiting another day to enjoy the cold air that now fills my home. After months of sauna-like conditions in my house, I'm happy to say that my nose and toes are numb from the cold and I couldn't be happier!THANK YOU BOTH! You've got a new customer, and many more to come.

Issues we had: They day of install they left the job site with no air supply into one room, it was never checked. It did not pass NC inspection and when it was fixed for inspection we had a natural gas leak When they came to fix the gas leak they powered off the outside unit and never installed the breakers we had to figure it out ourselves, during this work they left a Stanley knife blade in the garden. To add insult to injury we never go the whole Trane rebate as detailed in the bid. We wrote to Allen Kelly and Trane about our experiences, we also contacted Trane and they put us in contact with another Trane dealer who inspected the work and found it not per Trane procedures they did instal mods and billed Trane. Allen Kelly sent us a letter asking us to recommend other people, they had a complete disconnect from the customer.
Description of Work: I would like to share our experinces with Allen Kelly. They installed a Trane 14 System HVAC in our attic and 15XL cooling unit in the yard, this was a planned install nbot emergency based.
