Not sure what may have happenned? Our phones are answered live on the weekends by our office staff. In any case we were in contact with the customer on the following week and we installed a new system for the customer on 8/16/11. Our post install survey indicates that the customer was very satisfied.

We bought a home that had a 20 year gas back unit. We new we wanted a Trane system so we looked up sales representatives in the area. We chose Allen Kelly based on an advertisement we heard on talk radio. They sent someone out to meet with me in very short notice and were able to schedule it for the time we requested.
Description of Work: We had a new trane dual back installed at a home we recently purchased in November. The sales representative was very helpful and the technicians were as well.

My experience went very well. I called the Company and was able to set up a rountine maintenance service within a reasonable time frame. I agreed to a one year contract that definately made sense when comparing the cost to a one-off service...I was also able to use the coupon that was in the Angie's List monthly mailer that was received the night before my appointment (a nice surprise) . The technician arrived on-time (8am appt) and worked diligently on my AC system. He found a couple of problems and promptly fixed them once I approved the cost. I found the cost of freon to be below what I have experienced in the past and received a discount because of the 1 year contract. I felt the technician took pride in his work and provided a comprehensive service that definately was valued. I will have a follow-up maintenance done in the winter (part of contract) and will certainly call them if I have a problem. I have used a different company in the past and felt ripped off and misled but didn't from this one.
Description of Work: I had them perform a "checkup" service on my AC unit.

This is very unfortunate and embarrising for our team. I investigated this customer's situation and found that we did infact drop the ball. Our sales person's home was heavily damaged by the tornadoe and quite frankly had too much on his plate. This was our fault. Since then, our sales person is refocused and has gotten his home repaired. We appologize! Every customer is important to us. Brett Chappell Sales Manager

We contracted with Allen Kelly after our A/C unit went belly-up. Doing our due diligence, getting multiple bids, and reviewing the potential work orders and pricing, they were chosen from 3 other companies based on the quality of equipment offered, the knowledge and insight of the salesperson Bob and the warranty offered on the service and products. They ended up matching the best price quote we had as well. Kudos to Bob as well for squeezing us in the day our unit broke as our normal company who services the units couldn't send anyone out until 2 days later!! We set up the appointment around the 1st of June and their scheduler was only able to fit us in 2 weeks later, slightly disappointing but understandable. During this time they brought window units for the house, which was a nice touch. The install experience overall was very good. The installers were on time, friendly and worked hard. They finished on time as well (it was estimated as a 2 day job). However I have given a "B" on quality because in their rush to finish, they had left a bit of work debris in our basement/yard, in a couple areas over did the plaster around a couple vents which some wires got stuck in, but more importantly forgot to run a vent line to the kitchen. Thankfully, we called our salesperson that afternoon, who sent the guys back out first thing the next morning to fix. They were apologetic and handled it with total professionalism and class. The system is now running light years better than what we had and had also passed city inspection flawlessly. I would recommend using them because they seemed to reflect the quality of service and products highlighted in their previous reviews here in Angie's List.

My AC unit in the attic was leaking down into the bathroom below on a Sunday. I put in an order with my home warranty but the company who was supposed to come out to my house, never did. The home warranty company tried other places (supposedly) but couldn't find one. That told me I could find one myself and I would get reimbursed. I found Allen Kelly through Angie's List. I gave them a call and the woman said the repairman would be out later in the day. Within two hours, he came. So quick for a Sunday. There were apparently two issues with my AC. There was water coming from it which is not supposed to happen. But if it does leak, it goes into a pan where if a certain amount of water collects, a switch automatically shuts off the AC unit. With my unit, the AC leaked and did not stop once it went to that level. The repairman seemed to have fixed the problem. However, several days later the unit leaked but once it got to a certain level, it shut the unit off (like it is supposed to). So he definitely fixed part of it. The home warranty sent out a different person to fix the issue. He too apparently had the same idea as it continued to leak. So both of these professionals had the same idea. If I do need to have my AC or heat fixed again and can't get it through my home warranty company, I will definitely give this place another try.

Company called the day before installation to remind me of installation and give me time that installers would be there. Installers were on site before appointment time (8:30 am). However, I was asleep and did not respond until just before 8:30 am. Installers called, knocked on door, and waited for me to let them in. Installers went to work right away. Put down drop cloth to protect carpet from front door to indoor air handling unit. Work was completed in a timely manner. Installers had to wait on transition duct to be fabricated and brought to job site. This allowed installers to take exact measurements before duct was fabricated. Air handling unit is a very tight fit in space provided. Complete installation and removal of all old equipment was completed by 3:30 pm. I still have to get work inspected by City of Durham.
Description of Work: Replaced outdoor heat pump, indoor air handling unit, and thermostat. Removed original heat pump (1985) and newer (2004) air handling unit. Took old equipment for disposal. Took mercury bulb thermostat for recycling. Installed new pad for heat pump. Pulled permits with the City of Durham.

Everything that follows is my opinion. The tech basically spent ~5 minute examining the HVAC unit only to pronounce that he did not know what the problem was. The examination was extremely cursory - he took off a panel, looked inside, and that was pretty much it. He then offered to quote installation of a UV lamp. Allen Kelly charged $109 for that cursory examination - basically, $109 for just showing up.. I paid them, but I won't use them again. I considered not paying them, but it was not worth the trouble. Instead, I gave them the opportunity to make it right, and they did not take that opportunity. Read on: Here is the problem: I got NO value for that $109. NO VALUE. Allen Kelly was supposed to diagnose the problem - they did not do that. I'm supposed to pay $109 for that. It was a rip-off. Allen Kelly later called back with a quote: If I bundled the UV lamp with replacement of the coils, the cost for the UV lamp would be ~$600. If I did the UV lamp stand-alone, the cost was ~$750. Why 2 different prices? Either way, the pricing was pretty high - other providers will do it at about 60% of that price. I complained about my service experience to the person who called me and said I was an unhappy customer. I told her that I got NO VALUE for the $109. I told her I wanted Allen Kelly to make it right. First, she tried to defend the $109 charge. As I continued to complain (it was like she did not hear me), she offered to have a "Manager" call me. I said a Manager was welcome to call me. Well, 2 days later and I have not received a call. And, that lack of response - Allen Kelly not seemingly caring about their customer's happiness, has led to this review. We will find a different HVAC provider, and we urge you to do the same.....
Description of Work: I had a smell coming out of the ducting for our upstairs air conditioner - musty, like old socks. I asked Allen Kelly & Co to come out to diagnose the problem and to propose a solution.

On Friday, January 7, 2011, an Allen Kelly technican (Ruthy/Raleigh - not sure of his name) came to service our HVAC gas pack unit. Shortly after arriving, the technician came to my door again and asked me to come outside to show me a problem. He took a roofing knife and inserted the blade into the tube of the heat exchanger to show me that there was a "crack" and told me our unit was a dinosaur (the Trane unit is 11 yrs old and has never required any repairs and provides excellent, economical service). The crack in the metal was tightly touching his knife blade on all sides (we examined the "crack" after the technician left and it was then over 1" long and 1/4" wide with shiny metal showing on every side). The technician also thought there might be a gas odor and told me he would have to turn off our unit because of danger from carbon monoxide and potential gas leak. I told him that wasn't possible as we were leaving town in 1 hour and the plumbing would freeze. He then checked the unit for gas leaks and found none. I called AK's office and spoke to Mr. Corr (sales person) who told the technician not to disable the unit and told us to turn down the heat while we were out of town and to air out the house when we returned a week later. The technician never replaced any of the screws to secure the lid of the unit and left all the loose screws in the exhaust vent of the HVAC unit before leaving our home. Mr. Corr told us he would email us a proposal for a new HVAC system by Monday, Jan 10. If we gave him approval by Wednesday, they would install the new system the following Saturday when we returned. We had to call Mr. Corr on Wednesday because we had not rec'd his proposal. He emailed a proposal on Thursday, Jan 13. After returning home, we were able to apply a temporary patch to the heat exchanger and install carbon monoxide detectors that gave us time to obtain other estimates for repair and/or replacement. Allen Kelly's replacement estimate was higher than the other 4 contractors' estimates. We wrote a letter to Allen Kelly & Co on February 16th expressing our dissatisfaction (we never rec'd any type of response) and cancelled the $149 service contract payment with the credit card company.
Description of Work: We had Service Contracts with Allen Kelly & Co. and the first two maintenance/checkup visits (Nov 2009 and July 2010) were very satisfactory with professional and competent technicians. The 2010 Fall service call was delayed to January 2011 because of an illness/death in our family.

Response from Allen Kelly and Company Inc
Customer states that a letter was sent to our Company. I have contacted our management team as well as the Owner (Allen Kelly) and we have no record of this letter or complaint. Our service technician did find a crack in the heat exchanger and the intent with the knife blade was to help the customer see the crack. As a professional contractor we are not allowed to "patch" a heat exchanger. There are no approved "patches" for this unit. I contacted the customer. We had a good conversation and we did drop the ball on providing a timely quote. I am reviewing the quote and will provide a new quote for the customer for a new unit as well as for the heat exchanger only (per the customer's request). Our goal is to add this customer back to our family of more than satisfied customers. The customer is faxing me the letter that was not recieved. 6/16/11 C. Brett Chappell Sales Manager

Service call went great. They were a little later than the time they told and thus I couldn't give them an 'A' on that, however, given the time of year and the temperature outside, and the fact that they did call us and keep us informed, I was OK with that. Chris our technician was very courteous and talked to us in detail about what he was doing and how long it would take. He didn't mind me looking over his shoulder a little either. The repair went very well, and we were sitting in a cool house before we knew it. The Angie's list Coupon didn't hurt either. Great company, will definitely do business with them again, if I need to.
Description of Work: HVAC and A/C for the 1st and 2nd story were out. Serviced the fan on the HVAC (melted iced up fan), diagnosed problems in both HVAC and A/C and added Freon to both Systems which were low.

The technicians, Dustin & Justin, were very thorough. Before closing up the first air handler they showed me the old & new coils, explained why a replacement was needed and also explained how the new coil was superior to the old one. They also tested the replacement coils and found that one of the replacements (brand new out of the box) also had a leak. This necessitated another run to the supplier, in turn making the job longer, but I really appreciated their attention to detail which saved me from making a future service call. They cleaned up after themselves well, but we found a few scuff marks and dirty hand prints on the wall later that night. Fortunately those marks were easily removed so no harm done. Overall I am highly satisfied with this company and the work they did. I called around & got several estimates for this job: Allen Kelly was $400 cheaper than the next lowest estimate and they did excellent work. I will definitely use them again in the future for any heating or A/C work.

I got several quotes for a heat pump and air handler and settled on Allen Kelly to do the work. The salesman convinced me he knew what he was talking about, that they would do a good job and the price was right - almost $1000 less than the nearest quote and there were a couple significantly more than these two. The two guys who installed the units arrived when promised and the installation went smoothly and quickly. I am very satisfied with the quality of the work.

Began with quote from Bob the sales guy who was very thorough and clear probably due to the fact that he had worked in the service department for years. He presentation didn't feel like the typically uncomfortable pushy sales visit. He gave me all options low/medium/high and allowed me to choose. His office staff was great. I spoke regularly with Angie who did the planning/scheduling stuff. A few weeks later their site supervisor came out for the visual assessment. The guy was really professional and knowledgeable. His crew follow up a few weeks later. They were also well led by an experienced person who really ran the team tight. They even politely refused snacks choosing rather to complete the project as efficiently and quickly as possible. There was a slight mixup on site with a American Standard furnace that came packaged from the factory in the Trane box. I was called by the company owner and informed that the new system was of comparable grade to the new system. Both are made in the same factory and carry the same warranty. In all, the quote wasn't the cheapest but the job was excellent. Even a few weeks later, I wanted to add the same really nice thermostat that was on the new unit down in the bottom level. After buying the controller from them, Bob came out and installed it for free. He also gave me some tips on the bottom unit and ways to extend its life. Great experience.
Description of Work: Replaced upstairs AC/Heating system. This system was a variable speed, 3 ton, Trane. It covered condenser, coil and furnace along with install. Also installed new flue exhaust and did some vent work to include adding a new return.

I called at 7:30 a.m. to report a problem -- the cheerful person at the office gave me an estimate of initial charges and told me that a technician would probably be there around noon. Received a call by 9:00 a.m. that the technician was on his way. Technician arrived as expected, very cheerful and professional. Used a systematic approach to identify the problem and explained what he was doing at each step. My air handler is a Lennox and this company normally handles Trane, so he was careful to check with Lennox to make sure that the replacement part he wanted to use would actually work. He made a second trip into the attic crawl space to double-check the manufacture date on the part to be sure that the part he needed was appropriate. He determined that what he had on hand would not be the right replacement so left the site and returned in about 30 minutes with the right part. Heat was restored -- he checked on this before leaving the site. Charges were what I expected. All the work that was completed was documented on my receipt. I opted to set up a maintenance agreement with the company so my price on parts was discounted and additional system maintenance was performed during the visit today. My total bill includes a cost for replacement parts today plus a one-year maintenance agreement.
Description of Work: Checked entire system to diagnose why my heat stopped working -- repairs involved replacing faulty capacitor and pressure switch. Very thorough & systematic about identifying the problem. The technician kept me apprised at each step -- what he was doing and why. Asked about prior service records and even called the manufacturer to make sure that the new pressure switch he intended to use would be compatible with my system.

What I can say that is good is they were pretty quick at getting somebody there and were somewhat pleasant on the phone. It ends there. The service man called and said the system was overpressured. He let out 3 PSI and said it was fine. It was 109 for the diagnostic fee and 50 for the work. I should have known that wasn't the problem, but these guys are professionals right?? Wrong, tenant called me back saying the heat still isn't working. I called the heating company again. They sent him back over. Now they are saying the blower motor is bad. It will cost around 575.00. Neither the service man nor the office could break down the numbers on parts/labor. It was one of those mystery numbers that I am suppose to just accept, or I don't get heat. Wrong again! So I figured it out myself, by calling johnstone supply and finding out that a new universal blower motor costs between 60-90 dollars depending on the HP. So had I told them to go ahead and replace a blower and hope they got it right this time (i didn't) it would have been a grand total of 645 dollars labor and 90 dollars in parts for removing 4 screws, a set screw and round trip to part store, and ohh yeah, leaking out 3 PSI of an overcharged system that wasn't the problem anyways. It wasn't my system that was being overcharged!! I wish I could find a good HVAC guy!!!
