Description of Work: Saje Construction was hired as a general contractor for our master bathroom remodel. We knew things were not going to go right almost from the beginning, as the contractor did not even put down drop cloths on the carpeting and furniture as they began demolition of the old bathroom. From there, things only got worse. Deadlines weren't met, drywallers came and went without any oversight (there were 6 different ones- how would they know what they did or didn't do!), and the subs were constantly being rescheduled. The real problem, however, wasn't the subcontractors, it was the total lack of professionalism and quality work provided by Saje Construction. | |We left access to our home with the contractor for 2 1/2 weeks while we were away, with the assurance from him that everything would be completed upon our return. During that period, I continually asked for pictures and updates of the progress, all to no avail. | |When we returned, we found our bathroom in shambles, and the surrounding areas no better. The carpeting in our bedroom was stained, our bedroom walls had holes in them from the work he had done in the bathroom, and our deck was covered with a huge paint spill that he hadn't bothered to clean up before our return! | |The work in the bathroom was almost beyond words. The medicine cabinets were hung at different heights, and totally devoid of any bracing-just set in holes in the drywall, without any support. The same was true of the door frames into the commode and the walk-in closet- no headers, no shims, no bracing, just frames placed in the drywall. We asked him to match the trim of the existing wood, which was a simple stained clamshell trim. Instead, he installed colonial trim, which was paint-only! | |We had chosen wire shelving for the walk-in closet, which, in hindsight, we realized was a mistake. That notwithstanding, the poor installation by the contractor reflected his total lack of knowledge-or even worse, caring about the job. The shelving required 105 screws. Of those, only one (1) went into a wall anchor, and two(2) went into studs. The remaining 102 screws simply went into drywall, with no support for them. When we removed the shelving, a simple tug was all that was necessary to remove it from the wall. We shuddered, imagining that it would have been only a matter of days before our clothes, shoes, drywall, and shelving would all be lying in a heap. | |Apparently, the contractor decided to paint the bathroom himself, rather than sub it out, as was assumed by us. His lack of experience was glaring, as the walls were not prepped properly- the paint literally peeled off the walls, ceilings and borders were not cut properly, and baseboards and trim we're not even caulked. | |We have had to spend considerably more to undo his damage and construct it correctly than originally budgeted. It has been a lot less stressful, however, having people we can trust to do a good job around us. Lest anyone feel that this review is too subjective, know this: that several other tradespeople and contractors have viewed Saje's work, and all have agreed that they have never seen such shoddy workmanship. | | | | | | | | | | | |
