Everything went well because we did not have any problems. Their price was fair. Everybody was very nice and professional.

The project started on time and progressed as expected. Gilbert Stroud, the owner, was at the job site DAILY overseeing each aspect of the job. Each contractor that he brought in was the best in their field. The workmanship, skills and care taken by each one was quite impressive. What struck me the most was how my home was not treated like a construction site but rather with respect. Each evening when the work was done, each contractor saw to it the site was cleaned and as orderly as possible. Gilbert would call us while the work was in progress with suggestions or enhancement ideas and give us the opportunity to make changes as we went. We are thrilled with the end results. Our curb appeal has been taken to a whole new level. We highly recommend that before you call and "price shop" a project that you call Stroud Custom Homes and "quality shop". The old addage of "you get what you pay for" just doesn't apply here. We got much more than we paid for and couldn't be more pleased. Butch and Vicki Rasmussen New Bern, NC
Description of Work: When we decided to have a porch built on the front of our house and a huge deck removed, we were concerned about quality workmanship and quality materials. We contacted Stroud Custom Homes a well known new homes builder in the area. The owner, Gilbert Stroud met with us to discuss the project. He accepted the job even though it was much smaller than their usual projects. Mr. Stroud drew up blue prints detailing everything we wanted in the porch. He discussed the details of the materials that would be used giving us insights on various choices we had. He walked us through the process and helped us make decisions that we would be happy with for years to come.

We are absolutely thrilled with the work of Stroud Custom Homes and would recommend the company to anyone. SCH was suggested to us by the local realtor through whom we purchased our house in 2005. While usually SCH designs and builds new homes (many of which are in New Bern's most desireable neighborhoods) the extent of our remodeling plans made the project a good fit between us and the company. It was crucial that the contractor and subs be absolutely reliable and ethical, since most of the work on this project was conducted while we were not on the premises, but rather, living hundreds of miles away! Stroud Custom Homes exceeded our expectations in regard to communication, quality, scheduling, cost, and attention to detail. We were kept informed of progress and of issues through calls and e-mails which often included photos. An example of an "issue" was the unfortunate surprise discovery of areas of rot underneath the old siding on our house. We were provided with photos of the damage and subsequent repair. SCH also is creative, accommodating our ideas, and offering new ones. They designed and produced a unique "gable ornament" at our request. They diplomatically offered advice on design, such as the selection of paint color, and steered us to established local vendors for materials (i.e., light fixtures and flooring). The subcontractors were efficient, and, during times when we were on the scene, pleasant and polite. Clean-up following each cycle of work was utterly thorough. We consider ourselves truly fortunate to have worked with Gilbert Stroud and his crew. The results speak for themselves: we've had no subsequent problems and have received many compliments on the beautiful transformation SCH gave to our home, where we now live year round.

Description of Work: My home was built by Sugg and Stroud in 1996. Stroud now builds homes under the company listed. I purchased the home in June 2005 and have had endless problems with it. Most notable was having to have a brick chimney torn completely off of the house and rebuilt because the structure was determined to be flawed and a serious risk to the occupants. It was found that the structure was likely to topple through the roof, and that simple roofing repairs would never satisfy the underlying issue. Two unbiased and unrelated engineers predicted this same outcome. There has also been multiple window replacements, septic system replacement, water damage to flooring seaming from inadequate flashing around exterior siding and windows, in addition to poor lawn drainage and grading. I have shouldered the responsibility of fixing all of these at great cost. I contacted Gilbert Stroud in the spring of 2008 to see if he would possibly assist with the chimney repair. I was quickly dismissed as the house was 12 years old and that any warranty was expired. There's nothing I can do about that, I hired a very poor home inspector when I was purchasing this residence. What I can do is warn others who might consider a home built by this company about my experiences. Expect Mr. Stroud to deflect questioning about this report by saying that the home was built by a different company, namely Sugg and Stroud. Question? If this were a glowing report about a Sugg and Stroud home, would he then be quick to highlight his partnership in the company during the construction of that home? Who knows? What I know is that I have put out well over $10,000 to repair things that no home should have to have repaired. As an officer in the military, I assure that this information is accurate. As the saying goes, buyer beware!
