I was pleased with the quality and price of the work of Hugh and his crew. A retired commercial properties paint contractor spontaneously complimented the appearance of our house after the painting was completed. Some specifics: Hugh Gambrell's estimated price was "in the middle," between the highest and lowest bids. More importantly, he met his estimate as his completed-job charge. I had agreed to pay for the paint and materials separately, and he provided me his receipts, levying no surcharge for himself for such purchases. Hugh worked with me to use a particular solid oil stain that I had specified for the cedar siding and the decks: It was the same Cabot stain originally used on the house 20 years ago; but, it was recently (2014) discontinued by Cabot, yet still available limited to local warehouse stocks Tinting machines are no longer calibrated for this type oil stain, so color matching required extra work. Hugh obtained a great color match of the two different paints used on the different components. All told, he had to obtain paint from three different retailers to complete the job! Hugh and his son performed several attendant construction tasks to support the painting job: repaired/replaced some cedar shingle siding water damage on two "dog house" dormers on a 12:12 roof over the garage, repaired some wood rot damage on a basement door frame, patched some stucco flaws on walls and a chimney-top, and also installed a chimney cap I had previously purchased. All this work was done very well. Hugh was quite personable and clearly wanted to do the work to my satisfaction. His crew was also invested in the job and worked well around my doing some DIY work on the decks which they painted. My only less-than-totally-delighted element was that they rotated my house with some of their other painting jobs, working here only 1-3 days per week, rather than just knocking out the whole job at once. So the job took several weeks. Admittedly, this is pretty common practice for contractors. Frqankly, I had told Hugh I was not up against any time deadline, and I suspect he might have scheduled differently had I specified an earlier deadline. (So I had no real complaint about this...I'm just keeping this review real.) Hugh's collaborativeness and obvious desire to do a quality job stood out. I would definitely use Gambrell Painting Service again.
Description of Work: Cleaned, then painted the exterior of my 20-year old, 2-story home and the decks. This involved using two different types of paints, one for the stucco and the other for the cedar shingle siding and the treated wood decks that had to match in color. He also painted columns and exterior doors on two porches. (This is a house that is 4 levels high, including basement and attic at the rear of the house, for which three other painters declined to provide estimates because of height issues.)

Hugh did great work. Everything he did was top notch. He went above and beyond the agreed upon work. Almost every day he would perform minor repairs that were beyond his scope of work. He would spend the time to find out exactly what we wanted and then would make sure we were happy after each part was performed. The work took a little longer than expected due to the excessive rain and cold temperatures over the winter but was no fault of his. Overall, we are extremely happy with the work and would recommend Hugh's painting for a quality job.
Description of Work: Stained entire house and deck. Performed minor carpentry repairs.

I didn't find them on Angie's List, although they are listed. I had a general contractor refer them to me. I checked the BBB and they had an A+ rating, can't get any better than that. They came in, moved the furniture, masked everything off covering everything in plastic sheeting. They took great pains to cover everything up. The job took a little over 4 hours to complete shooting the texture material and painting everything to match. After they were done they took the time to clean everything and put back the furniture. We could not have been happier with the quality of work and they are very personable people. I have seen many such repairs, but unless I point them out, you won't see these repairs. That's sort of the point, you can't see the repairs. We would not hesitate to use them again, and might get them back again soon, my wife keeps finding things for them to do. If you need their services, call them. You will be glad you did.
Description of Work: We had some water damage from a leaky waterline t-connection in the ceiling, some stains from a roof penetration problem, a leaking upstairs shower drain, and a popped corner bead. Hugh's did the finish work on ceiling repairs and water stains. They had to match the existing paint and texture on a "popcorn" ceiling.

They came out and looked at the work that needed to be done. They were really nice. They were excellent people. Their quote was high. I understand that they do very high-quality work. If you can afford them, they are a good company to be used. However, I was able to get an excellent job done by another company at less the price. The quote was for $2500. I got the job done at less than $1500. I will not consider Hughs Painting for a future bid.
Description of Work: Hughs Painting gave me an estimate for interior painting, five months ago. The estimate was for repairs in the wall and painting work.

They are fantastic and very professional. They were wonderful in picking the paint and type of paint. They did a fantastic job in prepping the house and replacing any wood that needed to be replaced. I'd recommend everything about them. From start to finish Hughs Painting was absolutely wonderful.

Hugh and his wife Adell run a very professional operation. They did a lot of the work themselves but called in some experts for the drywall and wood repair when necessary. This was a huge job and we were on a very tight deadline. Hugh said he could finish by April 30th and he did, even though he had to work late some evenings to stay on schedule. We changed our mind about the interior paint color after seeing one large wall done but that was not a problem, the color was darkened and the wall repainted. Since the entire interior of our house was under siege, it was very important to have some space that was complete and liveable at each stage. Hugh had a plan to do just that for us, completing one area before starting another. Scraping all the popcorn ceilings was a big messy job. Hugh and Adell did a great job of keeping the dust down and the mess to a minium. They tarped everything, hung huge sheets of plastic to contain the dust, and cleaned up carefully at the end of each work day. They were respectful of our privacy and our property and they showed up every day on time and worked hard as did all the other members of the crew. Hugh was on site every day and I never felt like he had subbed the job out to someone else, even though there were several others here working at different points in time. I highly recommend this company and the very fine people who run it.
Description of Work: Large common area of interior painted-very high vaulted ceilings All popcorn ceilings in the interior scraped and painted (2000 sq ft house). Some took extensive "mud" and smoothing before they could be painted. Entire exterior painted - three color schema Large wrap around deck stained Rotted wood replaced and repainted New wood french doors to front deck primed and painted Front door to the house repainted
