Sperling Concrete

I wanted to share an experience I had with Sperling Concrete recently that might help folks looking for a company in the Lake Norman area to do concrete work for them. I had Norm Sperling replace my entire driveway for me last year. I was very happy with the work they did. Fast forward over a year and I had the manhole for my water line that was located in the middle of the driveway crack. I reached out to Norm and told him about my problem and he went out of his way to find a replacement box (because it was not the normal size) and he and his team dug up the damaged area, replaced the box, and re-cemented the area so this won't happen again. I would recommend Norm and Sperling concrete to anyone!

My old concrete was broken and I wanted to replace most but not all . Mr. Norman Sperling submitted the best quote and I hired him. He came and finished the job in one day but he did not replace all the areas that we agreed on . Only about 2/3 . He insisted that he told me in advance . I honestly don't recall this and it was my mistake that the work order did not spell in details . Mr. Sperling seems such a nice guy that I did trust him and he kept repeating that he stands behind his job. My advice for any one hiring Mr. Sperling to be extra careful and does not buy his charm. I am not sure about the quality of his work but it looks fair so far. So his low estimate was not really lower , it was just he did less work of what I thought he should do.

I was initially impressed with Mr. Sperling because he was very responsive & prompt in coming out to give me an estimate. He looked over what we needed done then said he'd email me the next day with his estimate, but I never heard anything back from him. I called him a week later but got no answer & his voicemail was full. I cannot recommend him based on his lack of response.

The demolition job was an 8 hour operation using 4 workers that obviously had extensive experience. The set up of the formwork and pouring was another 8 hour day and the pour was an additional day with 6 workers and supervised by Mr. Sperling. The driveway was cut 3 days later for expansion joints under my request for additional ones. I negotiated a >$8K job and was very specific with Mr. Sperling regarding my requirements for adequate expansion cuts as well as his crew working to avoid irrigation lines. The did an OK job as it relates to taking care of my lawn and cleanup I would give a C+ as there were many concrete blobs in my grass and in my garden. But, all this said that he and I agreed on a 4000psi concrete in which he told me he would show me the receipt to prove that it was the correct hardness (he did not). I believe him though. The resultant driveway is and looks great. The water flow, which was complex, is well designed. These two factors of quality of the end product and the water flow gives Norm an A.

Willie the cement guy came, they laid off our porch at such a slant that we could not have sat anything down without sliding off. And of course that came with an increase of price to have it level as it should have been. Then less than one month the "best concrete money could buy" began to crack! We have called,texted many many times to Mr.Sperling and the concrete guy Willie, and nothing until today October 24th they came and did their fix and told us to get someone else to fix it if we want. Please use someone else if you want good concrete- see the picture of our "fix" very sad about this.

I called many contractors before deciding to go with Sperling Concrete. Half never called back and the ones that did were all over the place in quotes. Norm and his crew were very professional and did an amazing job! Driveway came out beautiful. They were also patient with me on last minute changes. Highly recommended!! AAA+++

I believe in being fair so I will attempt to lay out my thoughts. I will say I called a lot of people to give me an estimate and they were one of the two (out of 10 contractors I called) that actually gave me an estimate. Pros: Very friendly and professional approach. Hard working Tried to do their best Stood behind their work Finished product looked good Cons: Concrete was very rough initially and the coping on the pool was crooked and didn't line up at the joints. They agreed there were issues and decided to demo and redo. The second pour was so slippery that 2 people fell the first day. I ended up acid etching the surface myself to make it usable. The surface is great now. So here is the bottom line: The PM admitted to me that he had never done a pool deck before (after work had already started.) I would have liked to have been assigned someone with experience with pool decks as I'm guessing that pool decks are quite different from other projects due to the finish required, connections for the stair handle, coping, etc.. I do feel that the completed work would have been better if that had been the case. I shouldn't have had to oversee the project as closely or have to go back and do things like drill in the winter cover studs but I just didn't trust them to do it right. I'm on the fence as to whether to recommend them to anyone. I think they would probably do good work on something like a driveway but not on a pool deck project. Although maybe now that they have some experience they might do better.

Norm was very good about showing up for the estimate and to discuss the job. Some shrubs had to be removed and they took them out. They were very cooperative about moving irrigation and landscape lights. The workers were very professional and made sure I was happy with work. The crew was also very neat and cleaned up completely when the job was finished. I was very pleased with a all aspects of my experience with Sperling concrete from plan through completion.

I rate the work very good. I thought the price was reasonable. And, yes, I would hire him again. The only issues I had were knowing what day and what time the worker would show up. Wasn't always when I was told. My impression is that the person who does this work stays very busy and may have challenges juggling his schedule.

Sterling Concrete was one of a few companies who had given us estimates for our driveway and walkways. Hands down Sterling was the best we could have chosen and we knew it from our first meeting even before we received the quote. We are extremely satisfied with Norm and all who came to do the job. They were impeccably honest, sincere, confident and patient with us. From beginning to end we never had to remind the crew about anything. Matt, Norm's foreman, took control, made suggestions and was totally a customer service orientated guy. They know their stuff. And talk about going the extra mile.... Norm took my boat to his yard while the job was being done and brought it back when it was time. He never asked us for compensation and being the type of person he is he knew he had relieved us of the pressure of putting it somewhere. I for one hesitate to recommend contractors. However, this is the first and only time I've ever done so without hesitation. Wonderful job by true craftsman. Thank you Norm and thank you Angie's List Sincerely, Terry B.

I was satisfied with the concrete work that Sperling did for me and would have given a high grade on that. However, the patio was poured in the Fall of 2013 and the seal began to peel over the Winter. In the Spring of 2014, I contacted Norm and he said he would check it out but never did. I called again in the Summer. I called again in the Fall and Norm actually stopped by the house and looked at the patio. To this date I have heard nothing from Norm. The original concrete patio did not peel, only the new concrete so I believe the seal was put on prematurely. In summary, the patio was put in in the late summer/early fall of 2013 and started peeling as soon as the weather got cold. It has looked a mess for all of 2014 and now we are in 2015. I think I have been very patient in trying to get this resolved. Whenever I have spoken with Norm he is polite but is slow to respond.

He is good. The guy was very qualified for the work. They were hard workers. They stayed until the job was done. I just trust them that is why I used them. They are excellent. One of the fact is that they are not very responsive.

Terrible experience! During the first pour they ran short on concrete and had to wait until the afternoon for more of the same color. When the concrete dried it was the wrong color and did not match the first pour. They then dug up the mismatched concrete with sledge hammers ( some of the small concrete particles dinged my garage door) and they re-poured the mismatched section. The second pour did not match either and they eventually color coated the second pour to come close to the original color of the existing patio. This wasn't bad enough but it dragged out over several weeks for a job that should have been done in two days. Dealing with the owner was great at first but became an extremely painful experience after things started to go bad. Sperling's number two person was tremendous and told me after the whole thing was done that they shouldn't have done the first pour in the rain. Even though I have stamped concrete you can see the rain marks. The only thing I was satisfied with was the price but I would have paid more for a more professional job. Additionally, my new driveway, since this is a new home, is stained from the concrete color stain and concrete that was dripped from their concrete buggy during the job.

Norm came out a day earlier than we expected. Looked over the problem and said he could repair it and gave me the cost. He also said that if it were him he would not invest the money. The concrete was not installed correctly when it was poured over 20 years ago. Repairing the cracks wouldn't prevent more. Other that the appearance it would not become a big problem. I was impressed with his honesty. Glad not to have to spend the money. Sperling Concrete's business card is in our file and will be the 1st business we call if any concrete issues come up in the future.

Mr. Sperling was great to work with on this project. I had discovered that over time half of my garage floor had settled and had to be replaced. Although Mr. Sperling had several projects pending because he was doing a patio next door and because my project was almost of an emergency nature, he agreed to do my work while he was doing my neighbor's (which had already been scheduled).Mr. Sperling kept track of the project and checked back throughout the two days to be sure the crew was doing a good job and that I was satisfied with the outcome.

Sperling Concrete was prompt, professional and offered an excellent price. We had a concrete walkway placed from the front porch to the driveway and we also had a sealant placed on the front porch. Norm and the two gentlemen working for him were exceptional down to the driver of the concrete truck (sorry I didn't get his name). Augustine and Beto the gentlemean working for Norm were very friendly and competent at their jobs. We were very pleased with the finished product. I would like to say that I don't usually write reviews, but Norm earned a great review, did a fantastic job and deserves to have his business used on Angie's list.

Norm runs an excellent business.. I found him through the HomeAdvisor and then joined Angie's List to see other reviews.. He is very quick in getting back to you about estimates or answering any questions you have.. He is extremely busy so be prepared to wait for the actual scheduling of the pour.. It was fine since we've had nothing but rain and cold for like 2 weeks straight so when he said he was way behind, I believed him.. When he was able to work me in I was thrilled, the guys just showed up, graded and put the forms in.. Pretty much caught my wife off guard as all she heard was noise in our backyard.. hahaha.. The pour came about 3 days later and they showed up on time and ready for it.. Norm and his crew did an excellent job.. He did however mark up 2 posts on my fence as the space for the concrete tub to pass into my backyard was very tight.. So left a few marks but cleaned them off after the job was completed.. There was no up front deposits or payment right after completed.. He wanted to make sure the concrete set and cured to my satisfaction.. That was Excellent.. I am really happy with Sperling Concrete and will be using them again in the near future..

Gave me estimate to do patio. My neighbor did the same. Afterward I agreed and we said we would schedule a time. So I put in the forms to the HOA with him listed as contractor. After I got my approval I could not reach him in any way. My neighbor experienced the same. Would not answer emails and would not return calls. Finally gave up and had another contractor complete the work but this delayed me a great deal.

Bought Norm's (Sperling Concrete) special and he came out immediately to look at the project. Couldn't be a nicer guy. Took about week to get on the schedule and then they had everything done in about 2 hrs. All his guys were very professional and polite. Will definitely use again if needed & will be sure to refer him.

They did a good job. They guy was difficult to track down on at times but did the job on time and it was done well.

I have used them before and will use them again. Their workload was heavy and due to that it took a while to get tom my job but i told them i was in no hurry. They are first class

It was a reasonable price. They did what they said they were going to go, they were here on time, they finished it, and they did a nice job. They are very clean. He's hard to get, I called and finally got him, not that he was committed to anything, he just kept saying he's busy but finally he get back to me sometime in September. I think honestly he does bigger job, I only had a small patio put in and we had a lot of rain in the summer. He didn't say that he was coming, he said, "I'll call you when I have free time," so he's hard to get. It took a long time before he could make room for me.
