It went really well. He's a craftsman. He's a seventy year old Sicilian and he's been doing it for forty years so there is not much that he doesn't know about it. He did substantial amount of work. He cleaned up and took all the debris away. I would recommend him. It was $200 cheaper than the other guy. He's a gawky old man.

It went well enough. We thought that the price was a little high for the actual work done but, he came out promptly and the work was done very satisfactorily. He cleaned up after himself. He's courteous and professional and did the work. It took less than 2 hours, I think. We have no complaints. He did what we needed when we needed it so, we're happy with that.

Great! He does things right without rushing through the job!
Description of Work: Don came over an gave us an estimate on exterior masonry work to be done on our home. He was very reasonable and was true to his estimate. He did excellent work and we will be calling him again soon for some other repairs. He is a master of his craft.

I have used several contractors in the past and I have to say without a doubt that Don has to be the best contractor I have ever used! He spent two days working at my house and was always punctual. His main concern was doing a good job and making sure that I was happy with the work. He is very meticulous in his work and takes the time to do it right. Although Don charges by the hour he does not goof off at all. His work is that of a perfectionist and he has a strong work ethic. He is very honest, and when he gave me the final bill after completing the work he itemized everything down to the penny including receipts for the materials and hours of labor. He is also easy to talk to and just a genuinely nice man. If more contractors would strive to be like Don there would be a lot of happy homeowners out there! I hope to use him again in the future to replace my concrete slab patio with some type of designer stone such as man made flagstone.
Description of Work: The concrete mortar on the exterior of my crawlspace block foundation was coming off due to the sloppy job the builder's subcontractors did in mixing and applying the original mortar, making my foundation look unsightly. In order to save some money I took on the time consuming job of removing the old chipping mortar and pressure washing the foundation. Prior to hiring him, Don came out to give me an estimate and also gave me advice on completing the prep work. After I finished the prep work, he even came out a final time to inspect my prep work to make sure it was completed properly before starting his work. I hired Don to apply a new layer of mortar to the entire exterior foundation of my house, and he did a fantastic job at a reasonable price!

Very well.
Description of Work: These day it is very difficult to find some one for small jobs. I needed to reapir a few Bricks that the other contractor damaged, also had to fill a gap with grout. Don responded very quickly to my request, appreared even a few minutes too early to start the work. He did a very clean job and every thing went smoothly. He is very professional and accomodating. I wish there would be more people out there like him. Very hightly recommended.

I obtained a building permit for the project. Donald advised me on how big and deep the foundation needed to be. He even came out after I had dug the foundation to inspect it. Always very prompt and professional. When the county building inspector came out, he informed me that the foundation had to be deeper. But if the foundation was dug deeper, it would be under the existing house foundation which would not be advisable. I would have expected Donald to know what the code called for on residential fireplace foundations. We decided not to proceed with the project because of what the inspector pointed out to us. We did trust that Donald would have done a good job, and would not hesitate to call him again for masonry work.
Description of Work: I contacted Donald about building a fireplace onto our existing home. He returned my call the same day and was at my house the very next day. He helped me determine materials that the job would need and he provided me with an estimate of labor costs to build the fireplace. When I had a question he would return my call promptly the very same day.

I think things went very well. Don was there early to get started and worked all day, a total of 9 hours. Which was pretty true to his estimate. We are pleased with the quality of his work and will use him for some future projects.
Description of Work: We have an all brick home that aesthetically was in need of some masonry repair. Don was extremely knowledgeable & experienced and spent the day repairing a variety of cracks and broken bricks. We liked that he didn't just patch over the existing mortar cracks but took the time to drill out the existing mortar and bricks (if they needed to be replaced). He repaired a broken brick step and also put rebar in to stabalize a brick pillar that had come detached from the wall. He spent tome answering my questions, giving me tips, and educating me about the work he was doing.

He is a great guy. He charges $20 an hour and he is always very fair. He doesn’t goof around and gets down to business. He is prompt, reliable and honest, and when he is done, the work is perfect. The work that he has done for us looks good, and the joints have held up for a long time. He is a pleasant person, and if he says he is going to be here at 7 a.m., you would hear his cement mixer starting up at 7:05. In fact, he would be sitting out in the front at 6:30. He never uses subs, and once in a while, if it is needed, he will get a helper. I would rate him highly overall. When he says that he is there for an estimate, he is always there. If there is any change - which there rarely is - he communicates right away. He is not fast, but he is very careful and very reasonable. I’d rather have somebody do the job right at a reasonable price than have somebody for less and then have problems. I wouldn’t consider hiring another brick mason.
Description of Work: We use the services of Don Ostwalt who is our brick mason. He is going to do a small patio for a barbecue grill for us.

WE had several people bid the job for the addition. Mr Ostwalt was NOT the lowest price, but he was 1)prompt in appearing for the estimate and 2)he pointed out different considerations and ideas (which we liked) and 3)he was, in our opinion, very realistic about what the job involved. He likes to work from 7am-3 pm, at which time he departs and does estimates for other jobs. You could set your clock by Mr. Ostwalt. He was out front in his truck around 6:30am drinking a coffee. At 7am, he began mixing concrete and 7:05am you could hear his cement machine. He would have a little midmorning break, a little lunch break and clean up and finish by around 3-3:15pm. In his hourly calculations, we were not charged for his breaks. Our first job, the addition, was done by the job. Part of the job involved taking bricks from several different cubes of different bricks, mixing them up to appear random, and then moving them to his work area. We homeowners worked with him on this because it kept the cost down and it helped us to deal with any issues as they came up. If you yourself would not be into participating in this way, I assure you that Mr Ostwalt could have done this brick mixing himself. It simply would have added to the cost. To tell the truth, he is such a pleasant man, it was a pleasure to work with him and the work went quickly. Let me describe this man so you will have a picture. He is local to Mooresville. All his family is here. He is in his late 40's, very agreeable, quiet, yet still friendly. A family man, his children are now grown, but still live in the area. In the time since his working on our home, he has also given advice and consultation to a Girl Scout Silver Project and a Boy Scout Eagle Project which involved brickwork. He is generous and sincere in spirit. I am convinced that he is one of the most honest people I have ever met. Don Ostwalt likes to work locally, although he tell us once that he was doing a big job for someone in Boone,. Perhaps he might travel some you need someone of his skills and work ethic. To continue about the jobs, anything that came up was completely resolved. Never once was there anything done that wasn't of high quality and workmanship. Now when rains pour, our large patio drains perfectly into 2 storm drains and a wall drain which distribute rainwater to the garden. All mortar joints have all held - no cracking or flaking. I am very confident that if a problem did come up, he would come to the house and repair it. However, there has been no problem. I have recommended Mr Ostwalt to several people who have been just as pleased as we are. I wouldn't have anyone else do brickwork. How fortunate to find someone who is pleasant, professional and talented. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO DO ANY WORK OF BRICK OR STONE AT ALL, large or small, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER HAVING DON OSTWALT GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATE. WHEN YOU HIRE HIM, YOU WILL FIND THAT YOUR CONFIDENCE IS WELL-PLACED.
Description of Work: We had Mr. Ostwalt do several large jobs at our home in the course of a remodel. He is an individual who pretty much works alone. I know he has helpers available to him, should he need them, however, no assistance was needed on any of the work done at our home. There were really 4 major jobs over 2 years time. 1) Build an addition using several kinds of brick in order to match existing home which is over 100 years old. This job took several weeks. Mr. Ostwalt was extremely careful and also had some good design ideas which added interest but no additional cost. His work was superior. He is not fast, he is careful. If you care about quality, Don Ostwalt is your man. 2) Build large front door stairs. The stairs are rectangular with rounded corners, so one can climb them from any of three sides. There was a good amount of cutting and fitting, and matching to the brick on the addition. He worked with the electrical to sequence in the wiring and boxes for in-step lighting. The stairs are large, strong and perfect. 3) This is the big boy - a very large irregularly shaped patio that wraps around our garden and has a good amount of patio furniture on it now. I want to point out the size because it is a challenge to do such a large odd-shaped area, have the design stay consistent, and most of all: have it drain properly so water does not collect. We had an additional challenge in that we had to somehow disguise 2 septic pump out lids (the big ones that are 2 feet in diameter). Mr. Ostwalt was brilliant in suggesting that we integrate some large flagstone pieces into the overall pattern, two of which are the septic covers. When we need to pump out, he will come, open them up and reinstall after the pump out. He designed it so that this could be done easily and properly. I can't tell you how happy we were to have his input and expertise on that issue. The patio also involved transitioning from the brick wall to the paver patio as well as transitioning 2 doorways with their sills. There were a number of installation considerations. EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT - AND I AM VERY PARTICULAR. 4) Rock stairs and a rock wall made to be complimentary to the existing stone wall which surrounds our big patio. The wall looks as if it has been there for years. Our house is old and the aged look is exactly what we wanted. THE ADDITION WAS BID BY THE JOB - $3500 as I recall. We purchased the bricks and materials, so this is a labor price. It was worth every penny, and in fact, we added some additional because he did such a great job. We had him return to do the stairs, patio and wall. THESE OTHER JOBS WERE AT $20/HOUR. I really don't know the final total because we paid him wheel, and there were different phases of the job, so it didn't all happen at once. Never once did he pad his hours in any way. I also want to point out that we live on Lake Norman, which sometimes seems to result in inflated estimates and charges by some. Not so with Mr Ostwalt. ETHICAL.
