This is an UP DATE relative to my initial review on 3/11/2017, for Kitchen Tune-up: I received a call from Tom Taube where we discussed the reason for my initial C review. Tom stated that they had dropped the ball and that he wanted to make it right. He came back out and made several suggestions to compensate us for the problems we encountered. He was very sincere and offered to install, at no extra cost, additional cabinet features and to refund the added cost that I had disputed. As I said he was very sincere and concerned and his offer of compensation was more than I had expected. We accepted and set up a date for the installation. On the appointed date and time Tom came back out and completed his promise. Throughout this whole issue Tom was very professional. His attitude confirmed that his company provided true customer service and cared about their customers, on a personal level. Because of his professionalism and concern for his customers satisfaction, I would not hesitate to recommend him - and Kitchen Tune-Up - to any potential customers. He proved to us that their are still "stand up" companies that are willing to go the extra mile. I would give them a AA+ if there were a category for it. Thank you Tom and Kitchen Tune-Up.

Thanks so much for your kind comments. This is a case where being an Angie's List member provided the conduit for our client to express some dissatisfaction which is great because we then knew it existed and were able to correct it. There is nothing more satisfying in our business than a happy customer. Again, thanks for your kind comments.

The process end-to-end was just outstanding. Communications and scheduling exceeded expectations, as did the price. The job was completed exactly on budget for the quoted amount, and the result met with rave reviews from the prospective buyers. The house sold a few hours after it was put on the market, above asking price!
Description of Work: Kitchen for a small rental home needed an update in preparation for property sale, as the kitchen cabinet design was from 1985. The cabinets were painted, and new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware were installed.

I would not use this company. We were not satisfied with their work. The kitchen cabinet refinish was $957 and they wiped them down and added some type of finish that streaked and left spots looking like it wasn't done. Tom, the owner, said this was normal but I had to call them back twice. We signed the contract in April 2016 expecting the work to be completed by June 2016 and it was not done until August 2016. The bathroom reface had parts missing and we had to wait on that. Extremely bad quality control of work. I would not use them again.

During this time period, our lead time did get further out than normal, and we were about 4-5 weeks further out than the expectation we set with [Member Name Removed]. As the business owner I met with her to apologize for this inconvenience. I offered to add 2 roll-out trays (worth $330) to the kitchen free of charge to compensate for this error in scheduling. She agreed this would make her happy. However, before I left, she then changed her story and said she wanted 4 roll out trays. I explained I could not give away $660 worth of trays for a job that bills under $1,000. She continued to pursue this, so in the end I agreed to provide 2 more trays at 1/2 price. So, in effect she got $660 worth of trays for $165. That seemed to end this discussion and statisfy her. Another small delay occurred when our supplier failed to ship the moldings with our order for her bathroom refacing project. We rushed the new shipment and were back a few days later to finish up the molding work. During my final inspection, [Member Name Removed] seemed pleased with the results and there was NEVER any mention of a problem with the quality of the work performed. She did however, question her invoice which was exactly the same as her contract with the addition of $165 (plus sales tax) for the roll out trays. She continued to question why she was being charged for the roll out trays. I explained no less than 3 times that she was being charged 1/2 for the 3rd and 4th tray and the 1st and 2nd were at no charge. She continued to complain about being charged for the trays and said she wasn't happy. THIS is the only issue she was unhappy with during our meeting. My unwillingness to be extorted for more free product is what made her unhappy with us. Our team strives to make our customers happy as that is our most important objective. I'm saddened that after doing everything possible to make that happen, we were unable to do so. When a client says they are happy and accept a solution, I take them at their word. - Tom Taube, Owner

Tom, the owner, and his staff were very easy to work with. I started out thinking that I might need new cabinets and Tom promptly provided samples and I also went to his showroom to see more extensive samples. I also evaluated only getting new doors and putting a veneer on the remaining face of the cabinets. When that was all looked at, I realized that the doors that I had picked were essentially the same as the cabinets that I had. Tom promptly provided a quote for the cleaning/restaining the cabinets. The cleaning/staining process went well, but the next day I noticed that the top finish had not been equally absorbed into the wood resulting in a blotchy look. I called Tom and he promptly sent out one technician to put several layers of a top coat. The results are a uniform finish that I am very happy with. This follow-up was a true test of the professionalism of the company - how well and how promptly issues are resolved. I felt that the price was reasonable and that the results were of the quality that I had hoped for. I would use Kitchen Tune-up again. I found them through Angie's List. My cabinets look beautiful! We bought a home that needed a lot of updating and Tom (and his crew) came a great distance to help us update our bathrooms. We wanted to convert our master tub/shower combo into a large shower only, and put in a new tub in our guest bath and have the walls tiles. The Tile Shop in Matthews is who they work with and they were very helpful in making selections that worked well together. We were especially pleased with the tile crew. Chad (our main tile guy) is very good at what he does, hard working, kind, helpful (beyond what was expected)...very nice to work with! The crew for our frameless glass on the master shower were great as well. Tom and Debi were very courteous and professional and have great people working with them. Overall, we are very pleased with the work that was done and our master shower and guest bath are beautiful! The cost was very reasonable and we would definitely recommend them to anyone working on a bathroom or kitchen project.

I am so happy with Kitchen Tune-Up. All the way through the process of replacing my Kitchen they provided me with great ideas and designs. They walked me through the entire project using special Kitchen graphics software and they showed me how it would look before it was built. Then when I chose the design, they always kept in touch with statuses for each part if the project, and provided accurate dates when the staff would arrive and do their work. Never once did they miss a date. The staff were awesome, they cleaned up after them each day and they worked very hard to meet each deadline. They used state of the art equipment with laser technology, to make sure everything was straight and true, and fiited the cabinets with great care. Their pricing was excellent, and they worked with me jobs that I could do myself to keep costs down. When they completed the work they left the house immaculate, and the kitchen looked wonderful. I am so happy with this company, I will definitely use them again for any other projects I may have in the future. David Green

Kitchen Tune-Up did a very good job in the end. We had to coordinate with Kitchen Tune up as well as the granite company and the painter who was painting our cabinets. I chose not to use Kitchen Tune-Up to paint the cabinets after talking to the owner Tom about his paint choice and process. He used latex paint and brush painted the base cabinets. I was looking for conversion varnish and an all spray job. I also used a different company for granite who was a fabricator and installer. Initially, I was very unsure about the company's competency. They sent Caroline to be our main POC. Caroline is an interior designer, but she did not have technical knowledge to really understand the tasks we wanted done. I was surprised no one did any sketches of how I wanted the island to look. I wish the upfront part of the project went a little smoother and I had more confidence in their abilities from the start. I think if the owner, Tom, came out and looked at the job, I would have been better assured. Debi, the owner, did a decent job of scheduling. I think people showed up generally when they were supposed to. I thought the quality of the work that they did was excellent in most cases. The tile backsplash came out great. Very high quality. The carpenter who modified the wall oven cabinet, added the drawer, and refaced the cabinets and island was highly talented. The quality of work was very good. The only disappointment was the install of our downdraft cooktop. We went from a cooktop with a downdraft motor outside to one with the motor attached internally to the cooktop. I explained to Caroline that I wanted something done about the big outside motor because the new one had a built in motor. She said the installer would know what to do. This was a breakdown because Caroline was not technical and didn't communicate this well back at the office. The installer left the old motor on the house and said it would be fine. It wasn't. After he left, I noticed cold air flowing from the outside into the kitchen. The old motor did not have a baffle to block reverse air flow. It needed a proper vent installed. When I complained to Kitchen Tune-up, they said the cost was only to install the cooktop. So really, they did not do a turnkey install in my opinion even though I mentioned this to our contact on more than one occasion. I ended up removing the old motor, buying a new vent and duct converter from the Internet and installing it myself. It took me several hours. I gave them a B due to this. It should have been done correctly by Kitchen Tune-up. I did think their price was a bit high for the amount of work they did and our painter commented that they bought the cheapest oak breadboard made, so I think they skimped on the quality of that material a bit. It made the painter's work a bit more difficult. Probably my penalty for not using Kitchen Tune-up for the painting. Overall, a good company. I would use them again.
Description of Work: We hired Kitchen Tune-up to modify some cabinetry to accommodate our new wall oven/microwave combo and add a large drawer below it. They also faced the ends of our kitchen cabinets with bead board and refaced our island with bead board and added baseboard and picture framing trim. They did a nice travertine tile backsplash with accent glass tile strip. The tile was included in the price. They also installed our new wall oven and cooktop (purchased separately).

We offer appliance installation as a convenience for our clients and I will say the outside mounted fan created a challenge for us. We were aware of it from the beginning, so Carolyn didn't drop the ball. However, our sub on the job, who is very good, simply didn't have a solution for the fan so we were left without a solution other than to just leave the old fan in place. It was a sizing issue and his availability of properly sized ductwork and such. Possibly some research on the net may have yielded a solution but unfortunately, that particular sub isn't very internet savvy. I'm glad the client was able to figure one out. As for the oak beadboard, we certainly didn't purchase low quality beadboard, but we did purchase the type of beadboard we usually get which is 1/4" veneered beadboard. Some folks may think this is lower quality than the thicker 1/2" product made but the problem with the 1/2" is it is very bulky and then has raw edges showing on the cabinets, whereas the 1/4", will typically tuck behind the cabinet scribes and provide a much cleaner look. So, we used our judgement in what product to use based upon our experience. I am glad they were happy with the final look...I suspect they would not have been happy with a thicker product. In 9 years, this was the first time a customer requested oak beadboard and none of our local suppliers carried it. So, we did have to purchase it from an out of town supplier, that we hadn't used before, basically sight unseen. But as I indicated, it certainly wasn't a low quality product and we didn't "skimp" on anything. The client elected to use another firm for the painting, which we knew and we agreed to do the rest of the work which that vendor did not do. Just because the client didn't use us for the painting, does not affect our choice of product or quality of work on the rest of the project. If we didn't want to do the other portions of the project we would have declined rather than do it at less than 100%. I'm sorry he feels we may have "slighted" him on material or anything else just because we didn't get all the work. We simply don't work that way. We are certainly happy and appreciative that we were chosen to so at least some of the work and are glad he was happy with the quality of our services and his final result.

Experience from start to finish was excellent. Tom Taube came to our house to look at the cabinets and provide an estimate on the work. The cabinets in general still looked pretty good after 22 years, but there were several trouble spots with scratches and worn finish. Based on what we were trying to accomplish, Tom proposed their original Kitchen Tune-Up process. He presented the pros and cons and gave us a good understanding of what we could expect. One cabinet in particular was of concern to me, but Tom assured me that when they were done we would be very happy with the results. He was very open with the process and that it was not going to result in new cabinets, but that there would be much improvement. He had before and after photos of previous projects to share, which gave me confidence in their process. He was able to provide pricing at the time of his visit, and I gave him some preferences for scheduling the work. He did not try to oversell the job, and I felt that he was genuinely concerned with finding the best possible solution for us. At that point, Tom's wife Debi worked with me to do the scheduling. She gave me plenty of notice and worked with me on a convenient date (it was about 4 weeks between the initial contact and when the work got scheduled). She was always responsive to any questions that I had. The crew who did the work were extremely professional and good at what they did. I was working at home the day the work was performed, and they kept me informed as to what was happening and what to expect throughout the day. It was a very long day for them, finishing up after 7:00, and they still had an hour's drive ahead of them to get back to the shop. Despite this, they were still extremely patient, working on minor last minute touch ups. The cabinets looked extremely good after the work was finished. The cabinet that I had been concerned about looked very good and no longer stood out. I felt that the price of the job was very fair and that the process that they used was very appropriate for what we were trying to accomplish. I would use them again without hesitation.

A great experience from start to finish, Tom Taube [Owner] was always available, upfront and honest about all aspects of the project. The contractor's and vendors he works with are excellent, we are very happy with our new kitchen and dinning area. I did my homework before choosing Kitchen Tune Up and received 3 bids for the project, while not the cheapest, I believe you get what you pay for and in this case it was a job well done.

I fell in love with the website, especially after viewing the videos. The owner called me several times, which I liked because it had that "small company- attention feel" to it. I explained my schedule and my traveling husband's busy schedule. Owner explained a new consultant who could come to my house in the evening or weekend. Excellent, now we have a solution. However, he told me to call to schedule it. "Hmm.. you have my phone number, why don't you have her call me?" I thought, but politely said ok at the end of the call. I called without success of finding this new consultant's scheduling opportunities. Alternatively, I asked about sending smart phone pics to them of my kitchen of what I would like done, and having email or phone conversations about what would fit my budget. The answer was "No." Showroom, I think the owner suggested a visit there. Nice solution. I called the KTU call center MIDWEEK for the address and Saturday hours. Excellent, it opens at 10.00 am-2.00pm on Saturdays, at a close location to me. THREE days later, anxious to initiate this project I am driving up and down this mall strip confused about where it is. Finally, after many passes, I saw a piece of paper written in "chicken scratch" that stated KTU had moved half mile away. What? The call center didn't say anything about an address change. Ok, I can handle an address change. I googled it. Indeed, it was about 1/2 mile away. It is now 10:15 a.m. I arrived to a place called Flooring America. What... evidently they are sharing space with another business? It looks dark inside. I pull up, knock on the door. Not a sole is inside. Hours on the door say 10-2 on Saturday. I look to the street, there is an A-frame sign that says OPEN in red letters. Nope, it's not open. Confused and extremely disappointed, I returned home. I called the owner, asking how his business is going. He replied jovially that business is great. "Really?" I asked. I explained that I had just came home from his showroom that had MOVED and had incorrect HOURS of OPERATION, and a call center rep that did not know otherwise. "Oh, we are not open on Saturday," he replied. Really? "Yeah, so and so quit who worked on Saturdays" he explained as he was attending his out of town family member's wedding. I explained my extreme disappointment and felt like it was impossible to pursue/make further attempts to initiate this project.

I'm sorry that this client had a bad experience. Our call center did have the incorrect hours and location. I'm not sure why but we corrected it immediately so the hours are correct. We ALWAYS ask clients to make an appointment with the showroom to ensure that we are there, because, we often have our showroom manager run errands or he may get called to a jobsite. So to ensure no disappointment, we like to have an appointment. As far as being able to work with us, The client is a bit misleading about this. She called me on a Saturday and ranted about the showroom being in a different location and not open. I apologized for the inconvenience. Explained that Saturdays were always manned by Flooring America and they longer do that, but explained I would correct the problem immediately, which we did. I also said I would have someone call her immediately to set an appointment with her. We called her within the hour, she didn't answer her phone and didn't return the call. We called 2 more times, no response. I then discover, upon my return that we already had her on the schedule for an appointment at 4:00pm on March 11th. I wondered if she just confused us with someone else. I went ahead and changed the appointment from my salesperson to me (the owner) since she had a bad experience and I wanted to apologize in person. I called her personally and got her voicemail. I explained on her voicemail that we did have her on our schedule for an appointment and wanted to confirm that she understood that. After she didn't return my second call, we assumed she didn't want to meet with us, so we cancelled the appointment. In checking her physical folder we had placed numerous calls to her, none of which were returned. So, Again, I apologize for her missed trip, but honestly, we did reach out to her numerous times to schedule her and she was very unresponsive. We don't want to become a "stalker", we figure if you are unresponsive, you aren't interested.

My experience with them was okay. I don’t remember a whole lot about it. I think it was satisfactory. The price was okay and I think they did what they said they’d do. They presented themselves fine. They were kind of quiet and really didn’t say much. I had no problems with them. I wouldn’t discourage the use of them but I would probably get someone else to refinish it again. I contacted Kitchen Tune-Up and left a message. Debi returned my call promptly and we discussed the project and scheduled an appointment at my home. Tom, the owner came to my house with a lot of samples and we discussed the pros and cons of my preferences and he explained the process. There was a promotion on the door style I selected which was great. It was still pricey, but gorgeous. Debi called me when the doors came in and scheduled an appointment for install. Danny was professional and knowledgeable and did a great job. They kept everything neat during the job. The cabinets look brand new. We are very happy with our new kitchen. Thanks Kitchen Tune-Up!

Tom and his staff were all very professional and went out of their way to find a solution for us. We have oak cabinet doors that are about 20 yrs old and were built with the type of hinges that are visible beside each door. I had called Tom to inquire about having the doors bored for use with the newer hidden Euro-type hinges. Tom quoted a reasonable price but found after inspection that the way the doors were made (with an inset of 1/4 inch) that a normal hinge would not work. Tom researched and found a supplier who had come up with a custom 2-part hinge that would work with my door, but due to increased cost, we decided not to proceed. I felt Tom acted in good faith and went beyond the norm in researching a solution for us. I would use him again in the future.

I agree with the client in not doing the work. Once we were able to find a hinge solution that worked, the hardware was crazy expensive. Thanks so much for showing your appreciation for the time we spent finding a solution.

Kitchen Tune-Up did very well. Everything turned out well. They had a fairly long delay between their scheduling and actually performing the service, it was probably a month to six weeks but they did indeed come on time and do the work on time. They did more than what would have been covered by the big deal. I think the deal was $250 for $500 worth of stuff and it was about twice of that. As a matter of fact, I am thinking about later this year, they would do an annual service, kind of re-polish it to make sure they stay in great shape and I am seriously considering using them for that and also using them for some counter top replacement work as well. So they obviously did quite well enough, because I am looking at using them again. For what I got, it was well worth what I paid them. That is unusual for me to say because I am usually pretty cheap. Their guys did very well. Even when I made special request, they took that in stride and were able to make things turn out very nicely. They are a good company. They were here exactly the day they said they would come. One fellow they had was a little bit less professional than the others.
Description of Work: They reconditioned the surface of the cabinets in the kitchen. They didn’t resurface them but they have a way of reconditioning them, bringing the stain up and making them look like new again.

He said the work is impossible and offered to replaced the entire cabinets. He said the price would be too high than I could afford and I felt disrespected.
Description of Work: I needed my cabinets on the lower half to have the stain removed and restained.

Wow, I seriously wonder if this client has me confused with someone else as I know she did talk to more than one company. She tried to restain her bottom cabinets and it didn't go well. She asked if we could sand and refinish them. I informed her that we didn't offer refinishing services and also, because her doors are a veneered panel, they can't be sanded anyway and the only way to remove the dark stain and lighten the doors would be to sand them...which is not possible with her doors. I explained that the only options we would have to offer would be to paint the doors a solid color or replace them with new doors. We NEVER discussed installing new cabinets nor did I offer that option as she just wanted us to address the lowers. We had a lengthy, pleasant discussion about her kitchen and other unrelated subjects. Though I could not do what she wanted done, I felt the meetings and discussions were very pleasant and am shocked that she says she felt disrespected. Hence my concern that she may have me confused with someone else. I will call her personally to see if I can find out what's going on.

Great and no problems with them what so ever but Granite Shield can be challenging with so much protocol involved with their warranty, etc.

Not well, lots of problems, lots of excuses. Be prepared to do your own quality control. Despite the awards they have won, it was very disappointing. I think they are coasting on their previous reputation and losing focus.

I'm certainly sorry [member name removed] feels this way. I wish he was able to post pictures of his kitchen as it is beautiful. I think he would agree with that...at least his wife would. We had a few minor fixes to do on the kitchen, one with the tile backsplash - they picked a stone that has a staggered face and then complained that their light switch plates didn't sit flush against the stone. Which they were advised of this prior to the purchase. We went ahead and ground down stone around the outlets to have them sit more flush (and didn't charge them for the hours of labor it took). He also had a problem with some of the electrical work, we had fixed quickly to (what I though was) his satisfaction. We provide a final quality control check at the end of the project when we do a final walk thru. Often customers will bring items to our attention prior to that, which we encourage so we can get them taken care of sooner. That by no means suggests that customers have to do their own quality control. Just because a client sees an issue before we do, that does not mean we don't already know about it or won't catch it on a final walk thru. After all, they are there every day..all day long. Finally, a large challenge we had with this kitchen was leveling the cabinets. The client decided to have his brother come to town and help him with replacing the flooring. They left the flooring very unlevel and there was a 2" difference between the wall and the front of the cabinets, which was left for us to deal with. It's very difficult and very time consuming to fix this large of an unlevel floor. We had to use extensive blocking and had to order in a completely different floor molding to cover the huge space between the floor and cabinets. If he had used one of our subs for this floor, we would have required them to come back in and get the floor more level as it was certainly not done to the specifications we would have required. So the flooring level of work was acceptable to the client but he made a point to complain about things like his trash compactor was not centered in the space. The right gap was 1/16" different from the left gap. It was very frustrating. My guys gave him 100% effort and their kitchen looks fantastic. During a final walk thru, all items were acceptable to the client and he made no mention of his unhappiness to our owner. We encourage our clients to communicate with us so we can ensure their satisfaction. We want that so we can make sure the client is happy and also to make any internal changes we might need to make. Feedback is essential and welcomed and is much more productive than filing a bad report on us a full year after the project is completed. Lastly, this client created a very ackward and stressful environment for us. During the project they offered to play for my guys a porno video where one of their family members was one of the participants. This was highly inappropriate and made my staff very uncomfortable when in their presence.
