Company was very confident and assuring that they could complete the contract for the contract price. As the project went on it was difficult to get them here to perform the work. They came to work with attitudes. The craftsmanship was horrible and we were not allowed to comment on it without an argument. The owner has entitlement issues. He commented several times, "tell your husband to just get more money from the bank." In the end I was sent a letter that he was walking from the incomplete job and was $20,000 over budget and had been paid in full(contract price plus additional $20,000). There is nothing on the project that exceeded the cost of the original contract price. It was a tough lesson learned.

Description of Work: I hired Carolina Outdoor Aspects to replace fescue with zoysia in my back yard. I believe Michael Nye underestimated the job. He had to get more sod twice and still did not finish the entire area we agreed upon. Also, the quality of workmanship was poor. He put down 12 to 18 inch squares, but did not take the time and effort to put them adjacent to each other - just wait and let them grow together. Also, around the borders, he did not edge them. It looked like stair steps instead of an edged line of sod.

Another reason I don't like Angie's list! I just got notified of this posting without any phone calls from customer about there concerns. This was a referral job and should have charged two times more than I did. Yes, the homeowner is correct that I underbid the project and have corrected this problem after there project and have actually tripled my business since. The zoysia grass is actually cut in square and as the zoysia grows in, it is normal practice to topdress with sand every year. Out of hundreds of projects over 12 years of business it is really sad that people hide behind a paid service.
I hired Michael Nye to replace the bermuda grass in my backyard with fescue. This involved killing the bermuda in two phases and then aerating and seeding the lawn. We only discussed doing this to the backyard because it is fenced in and has a shrubs/mulch around the fence which will help keep the neighbor's bermuda from creeping into the yard. However, Michael accidentally killed the grass in the FRONT lawn as well. He apologized and said don't worry because the neighbor's bermuda will eventually grow in my lawn. It's still completely dead a month later and I'm going to have to hire someone else to fix it because he won't. He did put some fescue seed down at my request so there'd be something green... but he didn't prep the soil or aerate. I put down mulch along my fence all around the backyard after killing the bermuda and before planting the fescue. I had asked Michael for a quote and he was going to charge $2900 for 60 cubic yards. My entire yard (front and back) is only 1/3 acre. I did the calculation myself and 20 cubic yards was plenty for 3-4 inch thick mulch in a 6-8 ft wide bed all around my backyard. He explained that he must have done some calculations wrong. Anyway, I paid about $500 for everything and it took me about 6 hours. When he aerated and seeded the back lawn, he punctured the drop irrigation system in several places even though I had clearly marked it with little flags and had explained to him to avoid it. At this point, I asked him for a refund of $400 which is 50% of what he had charged me. I did not want him to repair the irrigation system because at that point I did not trust the quality of his work. He refused to refund anything even though he caused more than $800 in actual damage to my lawn, between killing the entire front lawn and causing extensive damage to my irrigation system. I'm disputing the charge with Visa since that is how I paid. I don't think Michael Nye is outright dishonest or out to defraud anyone, but the quality of his work is very poor and he makes a lot of mistakes. He does a fine job of mowing lawns, but don't hire him to anything more than that or you may regret it.

The Member's goal from the beginning was to try to get grass to grow in his backyard. Since I handle clients around his house, he asked me for my opinion. I gave him a price and he accepted the work. I completed the work and worked to repair his front yard. If anyone does any research, bermuda does not grow from seed!! He wanted me to lay down new sod for him. I refused that since that would have cost us more than we made on the job overall. I have won the first round of arbitration with Visa and we are now working on round 2 which I hope will be done soon. The issue that is the most interesting about this whole project was that we did the work on a Tuesday, and he complained about it on the Friday of that week. Most people complain as soon as they have issues.

The project is very poorly done, unprofessional, sloppy and unsafe. The pergola and the gazebo are not on footings that meet code and they are not attached to the footings which is causing safety issues. The footings were supposed to have been 2 feet deep to meet code. The pergola is attached to the house with a jury-rigged 2x4. It is the only thing preventing the pergola from falling over at this point. The back beam is not centered on the columns, the front beam leans backwards. The pergoal is toe-nailed together and the structure has little support. It is made from low grade construction lumber with many rough hewn edges, knots, and twisted boards. The end result is shabby. The legs of the gazebo are not attached to the footings. They are not square to the top and are visibly crooked. From the backyard you can see that the columns on the right side of the gazebo are much taller than the colums on the left. There is a six inch drop in the floor from one side to the other and it cannot be used as an entertainment area. There are electrical problems with the fan. The ridge caps snake down the roof and are visibly crooked. The soffit vent is not mitered in the corners and is sloppy and unprofessional looking. The railings were left unfinished. There is excessive slope on the paver patio that causes the water to run off too fast and washes all the sand from between the stones. The blue stone patio is a complete mess. The patio slopes back towards the foundation causing water problems. The mortar used between the stones was installed in batches so there are seams. It was not level either. Mike took a grinder to the mortar to even it out and that scarred and damaged the bluestones, caused a discoloration of the mortar and a loss of dimension in the pebbles in the mortar. Some of the bluestones are loose and cracking. The accent lighting is just crude cut off plastic canisters with a bare bulb and wire. They stick up too far and are not covered. Painting was never finished. Paint was slopped all over the bluestone and the pavers, and brick. The fence around the garden is not level and the gate bangs in the wind. So much finish work was never done. This included painting, caulking, clean up of the site, covers on lights, and drains, etc.
Description of Work: I hired Carolina Outdoor Aspects/ Mike Nye to do a complete outdoor living area. This included a bluestone patio, a paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, a pergola, a gazebo, a brick arbor, a hot tub, and landscape work of planting around the perimiter of the property and the installation of a raised platers for vegetable garden. Electrical lines were run for lighting and a ceiling fan, a gas line was run for the grill, and a water line was run for the sink. I was looking for someone who would provide quality at a fair price and someone who could "see" the vision of what I had planned. Mike seemed to fit that bill and I thought that we had a good rapport. Unfortunately, I was very wrong. He seemed to be concerned with is reputation and quality but judging from the poor quality of the work and lack of attention to detail, that was all just talk and empty promises. And what wasn't talk and promises were just outright lies. I checked him out on Angie's List and I found no information either good or bad. I checked him out on the Better Business Bureau and again there was nothing to indicate that anyone had ever had an issue with him or his work. I contacted all of his references and the feedback I received was what I expected to hear; essentially that he had done a good job and that he had corrected problems where they had been encountered. Based on the results of my inquiries I decided to hire Mike on to do the work. To begin, I asked Mike about obtaining permits for the work. He told me that he didn't need permits since nothing was going to be attached to the house. I am new to the area so I blindly accepted that things were different in North Carolina. I have since learned that in fact permits are needed for any construction project. I should have insisted on the permits. They were needed to insure proper inspection of the footings, the gas, and electrical lines. Also of importance, Mike needed a contractor's license to undertake a job of this size. He is not a licensed contractor and it is actually and act of fraud to do construction work over $30,0000 without a license. Mike did do the work and the project moved along for 6-8 weeks. Everytime I raised a concern about something, I was told that the item would be taken care of. This is where we ran into problems since nothing was taken care of and the work is sloppy and unprofessional and in the worst case unsafe. I chased him around for 4 months trying to get him to finish the job and address the problems. In the end I fired him. Now I have to spend another $20,000 to get the problems fixed. Further problems arose when his subcontractors started arrving on my door step asking to be paid. Mike was not paying them and telling them that I had not paid him. I paid him all but the last payment which was justifyable withheld since the work was not finished. In total I paid him 90%, I have since learned that he is in financial trouble and that the bank has foreclosed on his house.

I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY COMPLAINTS AGAINST ME EITHER WITH THE BBB OR ANGIE'S LIST. ALL THE ISSUES CAN BE RESOLVED AND WE HAD PULLED PERMITS AFTER HOMEOWNER QUESTIONED OUR WORK. HAD THE COUNTY INSPECTOR COME OUT AND APPROVE ALL PLUMBING/ELECTRICAL WORK COMPLETED AND HAVE ABOUT $4000.00 OF WORK TO FINISH REPAIR WORK. HOMEOWNER GAVE US A TIME LINE TO FIX HER ISSUES AND THEN 15 DAYS BEFORE OUR TIME WAS UP, WROTE AN EMAIL TO FIRE US AND TELL US THAT SHE WOULD HAVE THE POLICE ARREST US IF WE CAME BACK ON THE PROPERTY. I HAVE ALWAYS PAID MY SUBS TO THE POINT OF TAKING CARE OF THEM BEFORE I EVEN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF. I HAVE DONE OVER 30 JOBS THIS PAST YEAR AND THIS WAS MY FIRST PROBLEM. I EVEN JUST FINISHED UP TWO JOBS THAT WERE PUT ON HOLD TO FIX THIS CLIENTS' PROBLEMS. I LIKE MANY OTHER CONTRACTORS WOULD LIKE TO RESOLVE ALL ISSUES THAT MIGHT STILL BE AT HAND FOR OUR REPUTATION SAKE AND ALSO FOR OUR PORTFOLIO'S. THERE ARE A LOT OF OWNERS THAT WOULDN'T EVEN CARE TO RESPOND TO ANY COMPLAINTS BUT THAT IS NOT HOW TO RESOLVE PROBLEMS. HOPEFULLY, WE CAN RESOLVE OUR DIFFERENCES.
