I should say that first I got sucked into an estimate from a home improvement store--they hire young people to flag folks down and offer a free estimate for cabinet refacing. When two guys showed up, I knew I was in for a pitch and that they were out to make a hefty commission--they were not craftsmen, but salesmen with a limited set of offerings and a "big discount if you sign tonight". They wanted $15,000 just to RESURFACE my existing crappy cabinets with laminate and put in laminate countertops with a 4-inch backsplash. If I went with solid wood doors and drawers, and a Silastone-type countertop, then $23,000! A friend referred me to Mr. Bobbitt, who came over when he said he would and listened carefully to what I was dreaming of for my kitchen. He had some good ideas about how to make it happen, helped me patiently to make decisions and then set to measuring. His price--for completely new solid wood cabinetry and tile counters, plus a full tiled backsplash--was less than what the sales guys wanted just to resurface with laminate! So like I said, I started adding things--all three bathrooms and some extra cabinets. They make the cabinets in their shop and bring them over to install. I went shopping for tiles and decorative bits for the backsplash, plus door and drawer pulls. Mr. Bobbitt even met me that weekend at Lowe's to look at tiles with me and make wise decisions about what would match. He also helped me figure out tile accents that would tie my off-white cabinets in with the existing darker woodwork so that I did not need to replace or paint the trim and window woodwork. I chose different tiles for each bathroom, designed some accents and picked out new faucets. He took a paint sample I chose because it matched my off-white appliances and had lacquer mixed up a Sherwin Williams. It turned out perfect. Mr. Bobbitt and sons arrived a few days later, right on schedule, with a moving truck full of my new cabinets. They had the kitchen ripped out in a matter of hours. Cabinets started going in immediately. They were done with most of the installation in a day. Then I threw a monkey wrench in the works when I decided I wanted that step-down 14-inch snack bar tacked on to the tile countertops. We worked out a solution for hiding the braces and making the tile work fit so that no odd cuts were needed along the edge and they came back the next day ready to put that in too. The tile guy, John Moore, helped me pick out some new accent tiles to set that off nicely. He did a great job too, and incorporated my quirky suggestions into the kitchen and bath cabinets so that it all worked well. I am well pleased! Mr. Bobbitt used to be a general contractor, but now he and his sons specialize in cabinetry. They can figure out how to make adjustments as needed and they are VERY committed to satisfying the customer. Don't resurface or overpay for your cabinetry when you can get it done cheaper and better by master craftsmen.
Description of Work: Removal of old (c. 1976) dark cabinets and laminate countertops. Replaced with solid wood cabinetry with a bright lacquer finish, tile countertops and full tile backsplash. I also added extra counter space, an extra row of storage cabinets below the counter and cabinets above the refrigerator and in the laundry closet. The price was so reasonable, I decided to also replace the cabinets in all three bathrooms as well. All solid wood with tile tops and designed to my specs. Now I have storage space and because I have no garage, this is priceless! Finally, after the countertop got put on and tiling had begun, I realized that with all that countertop space I might as well add a tiled shelf along one side to use as a lunch/snack table or bar. Now there is a place for us to congregate in the kitchen while we're cooking and enjoying a glass of wine. It's beautiful! I was thinking about doing this work to prepare my house to sell--now I love it so much I am staying! Some plumbing work was needed and that was subcontracted. So was the tile work (someone he had worked with a lot before). The tile work is very good and I got some extra work thrown in for free, which was very kind. I had to find my own electrician to put in a new over-the-range microwave and new lighting in several places, new switches, etc.
