Excellent.. I had two units that stopped working. One had to be replaced and the other was repaired. I was not pressured to purchase the 2nd unit and was advised that it was easily repairable. Honest without upselling pressure!

They are good. There is nothing outstanding but they are not horrible either. They did an adequate job. I would recommend them. If I find a better company then I won’t be using them.
Description of Work: I have a service contract with them. They come out twice a year and the last visit was the second visit. They just checked the furnace and the heat pump.

It was an excellent service. Their technician came and gave us an overhaul and insight of what he felt like we needed to do. He set us up for an appointment for him to come and install a new one. They were on time for both of those. They couldn't have been nicer gentlemen. The two who installed it worked their tails off. They never complained a bit. They got along well with each other and they knew what they were doing. I gave a recommendation for both the technicians and the estimator too. They were the only ones who said that they were going to do what they did. They were just super.

Outer Banks Heating and Cooling offers a HVAC inspection and maintenance contract for our OBX home. They come out before the summer and inspect the system and perform a system cleaning in the spring and fall. Then they provide priority service if there is a system issue, which is critical if your property is in a vacation rental program. They are punctual and thorough. The techs and the office are very responsive and accommodating. I find the investment to be both reasonable and effective. I highly recommend them for service in the Outer Banks area.

We bought a fixer-upper house on the Outer Banks this spring, and one of the things we knew needed major attention when we bought it was the HVAC. Ron took the time to analyze our needs carefully and advise us on how to proceed. We had to wait a few weeks to get it installed, but it was prime season, and they needed to schedule two men for 3.5 days to do the installation. The price was higher than we would have wished for, but I'm not downgrading them for this on Price as this was a more complicated installation than usual given our desires to relocate the heat pumps and run a new length of ductwork and our decision to go with top-line units. (They did give us alternative options at a lower price, but we were persuaded that their first proposal was their best proposal for us.) I do believe the **value** for the price paid was a solid "A" given the quality of the new HVAC units and the quality of the installation from Hugo, Johnny, and Tom. OBH&C consistently came when they promised to come--something that doesn't always happen on the Outer Banks! All the debris was cleaned up and removed. The new HVAC units are performing great. I will be happy to have OBH&C service the new units semiannually. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: OBH&C replaced two heat pumps and two air handlers with new Carrier units, built a new heat pump stand, relocated the heat pumps to a backyard location we preferred, and ran a new air duct where we needed one.

The cost was pricey, but the work started on time, finished on time and was performed by two very professional and courteous installers. The work was overseen by a knowledgeable professional who followed the progress from beginning to end and asked us several times if we were satisfied with the on-going installation. Carpets were protected with drop clothes and all debris was cleaned up at the end of each day. At the end of the job, Outer Banks Heating & Cooling filed paperwork for us to receive rebates from both the manufacturer and the power company. We are very satisfied and will use them for periodic maintenance on the new units.

Thanks for taking the time to enter a review. You chose really nice systems for your home. The Carrier Infinity "Coastal" systems are our top of the line systems for coastal applications and should provide you with substantially improved comfort over a standard system in both heating and cooling mode. They should also last much longer due to the heavy duty outdoor coil design. Thanks for allowing us to take care of your heating and cooling needs. Brian McDonald General Manager

Instead of providing an opinion on what needs to be replaced, they provided a quote to replace everything, including the air handler that is working properly. But, that was not the problem. When accessing my HVAC systems, they trashed the access panels, did not reinstall them properly, and left the area a mess. They were a little high in price, but they will never be allowed back in my house because they trashed it! I also do not trust them to provide an honest opinion. Three other contractors told me one of the air handlers was working properly, but OBHC provided a quote to replace it.

In my opinion Mr. [member name removed] has his facts incorrect and should have called us before posting this extremely slanderous review. We were never allowed to meet or talk to Mr. [member name removed] and his Realtor did not have time to meet us at the home he was planning on buying. We received an e-mail request from the Realtor representing Mr. [member name removed] in the purchase of this home (constructed in the year 2000 based on Dare County public records) to provide an estimate for several things that were noted by the home inspector. 1 - Pricing for a Service Contract. 2 - Pricing to relocate two recently installed 2013 Payne brand heat pumps out from under the deck based on the home inspection. 3 - An assessment of the upstairs airhandler since the home inspector had made a note recommending repair by an HVAC contractor and a price to replace it if we felt it was needed. Our project manager (Mark) called and spoke to the Realtor before going to the house to confirm exactly what she wanted us to do and the Realtor forwarded us a portion of the home inspector’s report. Once we received the report, we found it to indicate the upstairs system performance was substandard and the home inspector had not inspected the airhandler for the mid/lower level since it was sealed into the wall of the home. Mark explained to the Realtor that replacement estimates are performed at no charge but in order to perform an assessment of the operating condition of the upstairs system we would need to send a service technician to the home and there would be a charge for that portion of work. At that point, the Realtor told Mark she did not want to pay for a service technician to perform the assessment and she asked that we just provide an estimate for replacement. As a standard practice, Mark asked a few more questions and one was “did the Realtor know if the airhandler built into the wall was the original airhandler or if it had been recently replaced” she replied she did not know. Mark then asked if she would like him to try to look at the airhandler while we were at the house and she said “YES”. Upon arrival at the home Mark found the airhandler serving the mid and lower level of the home had indeed been sealed into a chase in the wall of the mid level hall. The access panel was screwed shut then someone had installed trim boards over the edges of the access panel and nailed them in place. Then they caulked and painted the trim boards to the wall so there was no reasonable access to inspect the airhandler and other components located in the sealed chase. Mark called and spoke to the Realtor and told her he needed to remove the trim boards and cut the caulk to inspect what was inside the sealed compartment. She told him to “do what you have to do” to get into the chase to inspect the airhandler. Once Mark opened the access panel he found the airhandler model number and serial number tag was no longer legible but it appeared the airhandler was original to the house. Since the airhandler appeared to be original to the house and the house was built in 2000 the efficiency of the airhandler is approximately 10.00 SEER. This Goodman brand airhandler is not a factory approved match for use with the 13.00 SEER Payne brand heat pump manufactured in 2013 that is currently installed at the home. It is not even a match to a 13.00 SEER Goodman brand heat pump. Not only that, but the airhandler was not installed per manufacturer’s specifications. It is set up in the counter flow position (blowing down) and it is sitting directly on the plywood floor without any protection of the plywood flooring from the potential of a fire due to the close proximity of the electric strip heater to the plywood flooring. After Mark inspected the mid/lower level airhandler he reinstalled the access panel and the trim boards. He did not caulk and repaint it since the access needs to be reconstructed to allow for future service and replacement of the airhandler. He then cleaned up the area and threw the paint and caulk scraps into a trash can in the house. The Realtor told Mark we were the only ones she had contacted to provide an estimate. It was obvious no one had opened the chase up before we arrived since we had to open it. That leaves the question; if Mr. [member name removed] was told by three other contractors that one of the airhandlers was operating properly which one were they referring to? The one in the attic the home inspector said was not working properly and we were asked to provide an estimate on or the one in the chase for the mid/lower level that they never inspected because they did not have access to it unless they arrived at the house after we left? Was it one or all three of the other contractors that were at the house after Mark cleaned up after himself and left? No matter the case, Mr. [member name removed] is getting bad information from incompetent and possibly unlicensed contractors if they are telling him there is no reason to replace the existing 14 year old 10.00 SEER airhandlers that are not rated with the existing heat pumps. There is a substantial amount of documentation on the internet that backs up and quantifies our opinion that an airhandler manufactured in 2000 and designed to work with a 10.00 SEER heat pump is not a correct match up to one of the newer 13.00 SEER high efficiency heat pumps manufactured in 2013. Mark’s inspection of the upstairs airhandler also found a model and serial number tag that was no longer legible. This Goodman brand airhandler also appears to be original to the home and manufactured in approximately the year 2000. This Goodman brand airhandler is not a factory approved match for use with the 2013 Payne brand heat pump that is currently installed at the home. It is not even a match to a 13.00 SEER Goodman brand heat pump. We did not provide an estimate to “replace everything” as Mr. [member name removed] states. Mark recommended leaving the current heat pumps in their existing location and save the money necessary to relocate them and spend it towards installing the correct matching airhandlers for the existing heat pumps. We did what we were asked to do by Mr. [member name removed]'s Realtor. We’re an ACCA certified Energy Star 3 contractor, Mark and I are both NATE certified, we are a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, we are state licensed, fully insured and have been in business on the Outer Banks since 1987. We do not recommend things to customers that they do not need in our professional opinion and we did not leave a mess at the home Mr. [member name removed] was planning on purchasing. Here is info for a booklet provided by the Department of Energy through the Energy Star program that backs up our recommendation to replace the airhandlers. Energy Star calls it: A Guide to Energy Efficient Heating and Cooling It is document number: EPA 430-K-09-004 and it is dated: August 2009 The URL for the document is: http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/publications/pubdocs/HeatingCoolingGuide%20FINAL_9-4-09.pdf?e210-1c64 Page 5 Headline is: “Consider Making a Change if Any of the Following Statements Apply” Further down on page 5 it states: “Your heating and cooling equipment is more than 10 years old. Consider replacing it with newer, more efficient equipment.” Page 17 states: “It’s very important to replace both of these units at the same time. Installing a new outdoor unit without replacing the indoor unit is likely to result in low efficiency, and may lead to premature failure of the system.” Furthermore, read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page when you post on Angie's List, it states what you are entering is true and accurate and represents your actual first-hand experience. Mr. [member name removed] was never at the house when we were there, so he has no actual first-hand experience as to what actually occurred and when. Statement provided by, Mark B. Thanks for taking the time to submit a review for our service. Rest assured that we're very competitive when it comes to service. As you mention it was an after hours call on a Sunday, the same work during regular working hours would have saved approximately $100.00. It's actually possible that if you had one of our Performance Service Agreements there would have been no need for the service call at all. During our Service Agreement check up we clean the condensate drain, add up to one pound of refrigerant, and also inspect a lot of other operational components and come out twice a year, all for only $159.00. If there is a need for service during the term of the Service Agreement you would also receive 15% off any necessary repairs and quite possibly extend the life of your heating & cooling system. Thanks again, Brian McDonald

All three units were checked for operations while tech was on site. I had noted that one unit seemed to perform inconsistently. Tech found it low on chemical and added it as required. An expansion valve was projected to be replaced but tech found it unnecessary to replace it thus saving me around $456. This honesty and thorough check of my units was one of the reasons I contract with this company for my heating and cooling needs.
Description of Work: Checked all three systems. This was provided under the annual service agreement cost ($417).

Thanks for the review. I agree, maintaining a home's heating and cooling system is not inexpensive. We feel the price for the Service Agreement at $159.00 per year for two visits is a pretty good value. We figured out the work performed during the check up would cost approximately $590.00 if it was done during two emergency service calls. So, when you look at it like that it's a really good value. Brian McDonald

Thank you for the nice review. You are correct that pricing for repairs can be considerable. In the case of your unit we were able to get the factory to pay for a portion of the repair cost even though we did not install the system for you. We recommend annual maintenance on all heating & cooling systems in an effort to extend the life of the system and hopefully prevent this type of major break down and the associated expense before a failure occurs.

Brian McDonald and his crew were very professional throughout the entire job - overall system design, specific product selection, system installation and then follow-up. We are located oceanfront in the Outer Banks, so we needed a unit that could stand up to the barrage of salt air, would perform dependably, would run quietly and would be backed by a solid manufacturer's warranty. Brian led us to the proper system - couldn't be happier with it - and the installation and follow up were excellent. We have since installed internet-capable thermostats so that we can check on settings when we are away from the house and Brian's expertise, installation and follow-up were great here, too. Overall, we could not have asked to find and deal with a better company for our HVAC needs.

We have worked with Brian McDonald at Outer Banks Heating and Cooling before and their work was excellent. He recently replaced our heat pumps and one air handler that were destroyed during Hurricane Irene. He was the most professional and certainly the easiest to work with. His price was reasonable and the work was done in a timely manner. We in fact never saw him or his crew personally because they were working on our beach house and we live 120 miles away. When it came time to reoccupy the house everything was completed. He and his company are one of the few businesses I would have worked with in that kind of situation. Our general contractor said he could do the job but I knew the quality and reliability of Outer Banks and didn't feel comfortable dealing with anyone else.

The owner, Brian is great, as well as the woman in the office who handles the phone calls and all technicians who came to our home and office. The one exception, is the guy who came to our home to give us a quote on a new unit. He was condescending and unpleasant to work with. If we did not already have such a long favorable history with the company I probably would not have purchased the unit. Also, he did not advise us on a unit that would give us a tax break.
Description of Work: Many times at our office and home for at least ten years, probably longer. They have provided too many jobs to list a price. Mostly service calls, a new unit at our home two years ago.
