Richard Laney Landscaping is the real deal. Richard and his team contracted with us to put a firepit, patio and retaining wall in place. A job that I had hired out to a previous contractor, who totally botched the job. Richard came to the table with some ideas, worked with us on the overall vision and quickly brought it all together. I believe the whole job only took him ten days. The final result is beautiful and my wife and I could not be more happy. Initially I thought the quote was a little high, but the end result was worth every cent. I highly recommend working with Richard and his team, they quality and craftsmanship is outstanding.

Description of Work: Very Professional, showed up on time, and somewhat knowledgeable. However - provided a verbal quote for work over $12,000 (which is what I expected) and did not back it up with a quote in writing. Asked him to provide a quote in writing so we could review it - He said he would have one to us asap. Never heard from him again. Basically he wasted about 1.5 hours of my time. Maybe $12,000 to $15,000 worth of work is to small for him.

I had a good feeling about Richard to start. He was nice on the phone, and was willing to meet me after work (6:00PM) at my property to give me a quote on some landscaping to help make my property look better. We were trying to work around the weather forecast and Richard scheduled to come over Tuesday evening. I left work early, 4:30, to get home ahead of traffic to meet Richard. Richard missed our first appointment. I called him to see what happened, he said he had a mechanical issue. We rescheduled for the next morning around 8:00 AM. The next day, Richard did stop by and we walked the property. Richard drew up an estimate on the spot. Seemed okay. The price for labor ($3100) looked high for a day and a half project which was mostly spreading a LOT of mulch and seeding a few hundred square feet of my back yard - but he seemed like a genuine guy and I thought the work would come out okay. We weren't doing major landscaping and didnt have any major vision for the property - our only request was "make it look nice from the curb". Plus he was willing to accept trade dollars (another story) for part of the job. I told him I wanted to discuss with my wife and we'd call him back later that day to confirm. I called Wednesday evening Richard and told him we were good to move forward, and asked for a contract, describing the materials he planned on using, the start and end dates, payment requirements, etc. You know, what you'd want if agreeing to spend $6000 on mulch and plants. His original quote was a bit vague and I didnt want to pay for mulch and get pine needles. He told me he'd sent it over and by the weekend, I called Richard to tell him it never arrived. He suggested we meet at the property. I wasn't sure why we had to do that, he already came by, but I agreed. So I left work early again to meet him at the house. We walked through the proposal in detail with my wife, hoping this would iron out any of the finer details. Richard then "drew up the contract" which was 100% identical to the quote. I asked him to add in some additional details, like the start and end date of the project and the kind of material he planned on buying, which he begrudgingly did (he gave himself 4+ weeks to do a day and a half worth of work). His plan was to fit me in between other projects, like when it rained since my project was mostly trimming bushes and spreading out mulch. I was nervous this would take a month to get done, but we agreed to the project. Richard left my home, and about 10 minute later, he called to quit. He said he had a bad feeling about the project, and didnt quite know what it was, but didnt want the work, reiterating it was his prerogative to decline the work (that he just 10 minutes earlier agreed to). He said he didnt think he could make us happy, which was unfathomable to me since we are pretty easy going about the landscaping and just want it to look good from the curb. In almost any case we would have been satisfied as long as it was done in a reasonable time frame and made the landscaping appear "well looked after". I get that Richard has that right to turn down work, and this review isn't about him turning down the job (although we did have a signed agreement). My big complaint is that he totally wasted my time. I left work early twice and was late to work by and hour a third time, and wasted 2 weeks during the heart of Spring planting season. I have to admit I was disappointed in Richard and his cavalier attitude to walking away. To him, another day of work. But to us, we are trying to get a project done and he is just wasting our time and putting us further behind in other projects we want to get done this spring. Based on him flat out missing an appointment, not following up on the contract, wasting my time 3x, not knowing or willing to write a proper contract or agreement for a $6000 job, and walking off the job before he even started, I just cannot give him good marks in professionalism, punctuality, or responsiveness. It seems like other reviewers had different events but similar results. Richard, if you look at my other Angie's List reviews, you'll see that we are easy to please and leave great reviews and are loyal to our contractors. I think you misread this situation.

I just happened to run into Richard at the Garden Show at The Park and went to introduce myself since I had only met him face to face once before. As soon as I mentioned my name he curtly answered "I know who you are, I got all your emails". Up until that point his attitude wasn't a problem however this time I felt he was dismissing me and what questions I had were gone by the way he spoke to me. Another couple walked up and he apparently knew them so he walked away from me. He may be a very good landscaper but from all the reviews I've read and my most recent run-in with him I would not hire him. I felt if I had a larger project for him he would have had a better attitude.
Description of Work: We didn't make it past the bidding stage. He was all smiles and concerns when he first came out and took pictures and listened to what I wanted and, his designer did come up with some nice ideas however, I never spoke with Richard and after the first design was presented I still had concerns (questions on warrantees, plant choices, etc.).

I would never recommend this guy. First he was referred to us and I can't believe he could ever be referred to anyone. We went into this project with the best of intentions and negotiated a fair contract value. The job to be done was to create a custome landing and a 430 sq. ft. paver patio. The patio came in under by 40-45 sq.ft. and the customer landing was a complete mess! He told us he personally constructed the landing and steps, however he cut wet wood, left all the stampings on the porch face up and actually placed a piece of wood that was completely cracked and chipped as a bottom rail to the landing railing. Nothing was flush and you could tell the guy shouldn't have been building this custom job. Also, there were cracks and discrepencies with the leveling of the pavers...4 days after they put in the patio. We approached Richard about the discrepencies and reviewed what went wrong. He got extremely heated and defamatory. He used the "F" word over and over, called me a derogatory name and walked off the job. I would never use this guy again and would caution anyone on here to do business with him. He comes across as a nice guy, but check his work. He will tell you one thing and do another.

Mr. Laney called from the nursery on the day the work was to be performed to advise that the nursery was out of the 15 gallon Crepe Myrtles which I had wanted. He was able to provide two 7 gallon Crepe Myrtles for which the quoted price would be adjusted. He arrived with the trees and bushes with two men (one was his son) and they started digging holes for the trees. I asked why he didn't have top soil. He ran out and purchased some. I assumed they would be extending the existing shrub bed, Instead they dug individual holes for the plantings. He advised the weed barrier would stop the existing bermuda grass from breaking through the landscaping rocks. The grass was sprayed with roundup which I supplied. He left after dropping off the top soil to see another customer, leaving the workers to finish the job. They left with my weed barrier along with the roll they had provided. I was disappointed with the size of the trees but he said they would grow quickly to reach the size I had originally requested (which they did). The knockouot rose bush was as small as a bouquet but the azaela bush was adequate size (however it did not have the same leaves as my other azaela bush already in the existing shrub bed.) They also just placed the edging stone on the grass instead of digging them into the ground a little as was done with the existing shrub bed (which they were extending) A few days later I called to ask if he could come back and fix one of the trees which was leaning backwards. My husband had put a stake in the ground to pull the tree forward but it wasn't done professionally with the proper materials. He said he would stop by..... but never did. I called again and by that time the azaela had bloomed and it was not the color flower I had requested. (I had requested pale pink but he provided a dark pink). I asked him to come out and look at it, giving him the benefit of the doubt that prehaps the nursery had given him the wrong color azaela. He said he had forgotten to come out but would be by during the week. He has never shown up, to my knowledge as the tree looks exactly the same as when my husband staked it and he never addressed the wrong color azaela. I work during the day so if he stopped by, I wouldn't have known unless he would have left me a note or corrected the tree. The Bermuda Grass (which stops at nothing and the weed barrier was useless) or weeds are growing through the barrier and it looks terrible. All the grass should have been removed. About a month after the work was done I saw the 15 gallon Crepe Myrtles at Home Depot for the same price I paid for the 7 gallon trees. Home Depot had huge knockout roses for the same price I had paid for the bouquet sized bush. Home Depot would guarantee the trees/bushes for a year. When I asked what was the quarantee he asked if I had a sprinkler system. When I advised that I had sprinklers, he told me he would guarantee the trees/bushes for six months.
