We pay so much a month. They come out 2-3 times a month. This company just took over from another company we were using, so they are pretty new. We just started paying them in March. They are very persistent, friendly, and professional.
Description of Work: We get the full service of what they offer. That would include cutting the grass weekly and seeding the ground so that the grass would grow and be green for the summer.

Southscape Landscaping has done my mowing, fertilizing, weed eating, etc on a monthly basis for years. The original company I dealt with was wonderful; the showed up on time and I had no issues. They were unfortunately bought out by Southscape Landscaping and I've had nothing but problems since. I was having an issue with the landscapers blowing all the mulch and leaves in my natural area off leaving bare dirt. This went on for over a year and despite talking with 3 people in this company detailing the problem, sending a picture of the natural area with all the leaves blown off and having a representative come out to take a look at the problem I couldn't get anyone to address the issue or offer up a solution but they were quick to send me notice in the mail that prices were going up and that they wanted me to sign a years contract. Pretty gutsy when you can't fix an on going and basic issue I was having. WORST customer service I've ever had on Angie's List.

The only thing we can say about the service is that they actually do show up. They may not do the work they are paid for, but they show up and pretend. I oversee my mom's bills for her, and in turn her service contracts. I'm not local to her, so I don't see the actual work. After paying for 8 months, my mom finally had enough and had me contact the service provider. While they will say that they showed up, did the services, and went above and beyond when they were issues, they are lying. The grass is full of weeds, they claim it is because she does not water. Prior to them taking over care of the lawn, it was never watered. Grass goes dormant if weeds aren't taking over. Now the weeds cover her lawn. They were contracted to weed and maintain the beds. You should see the "weed shrubs" she has now. ANd when I got involved, because they could not handle someone upset and frustrated, they instead cancelled my mom's contract stating she was in violation for not doing her part. They will give some line on hear in response that I was rude (yes, th

I have dealt with Southscape for over 10 years and found them to be professional and responsive - doing what they promise in a high quality manner. At my former home, they did everything from flower and tree installation to irrigation system repair and maintenance to weekly mowing and seasonal seeding/spraying. Through their efforts, the grass in my yard was often so thick we had to mow it twice a week at some times of the year. Many of my neighbors stopped to ask how I kept the yard so healthy. If we ever had a problem, they were quick to respond and make it right. We have moved into a new home and, after the builder did his usual minimal amount of landscaping, we asked Sean to give us a plan for making the yard a showcase. Sean has an amazing way of visualizing what would work best in the lawn and what would compliment the design of the house. He has an extensive knowledge of which plants will not only work best together, but which ones will actually thrive in our climate. What we really appreciated was the way he structured the design in phases, so that we could address segments of the yard as time and funds permit. I will continue to count on Southscape in the years to come.

Coordinating doing the project was not a good experience. Was told they'd come out one day, then another due to delays in their other projects. When they did come out they only planted the shrubs and left the top soil and they didn't spray the same day. I contacted the owner and he was quick to respond back and said that they forgot to do that and that they would come back out and put the topsoil in the areas we discussed which they did. The spraying took place a little later and I had discussed having them come back ever so many weeks to respray. So far one application has been done and I received notification as I was told they would that they did the spray. Since then I have not seen anyone back to respray the yard or received any communication as to why it hasn't been done or when it will be done. The people including the owner are very nice but communication and staying on track with the date of the projects need some improvement IMO.

First job in spring was ok. Job foreman stayed on site for a while to supervise the trimming. Although I questioned the bill being charged 30 minutes to much from the time they showed up to the time they left. He mentioned that the crew was not there normal crew because they were trying to hire someone just to cut bushes. Called this winter to get the bushes trimmed again. Office said they would have the foreman call me to set up the appointment. He wanted to be on site for the first few jobs so everything was done right. Never received the call after two weeks waiting. I got an email from the company treating me like a new customer and I was asking for an estimate. I sent an email I had located a more responsive company.

Overall they did a pretty good job, I think are main problem was with the landscape designer putting plants in the wrong places. Plants that needed shade were put in direct sun and plants that needed sun in shady places. Plants that would attack deer were place for them to feast on. The previous owners had them do the pool patio and other landscaping that is beautiful and I'm sure what attacked us to buy this house. If you work closely with them I think they can do a good job but be firm about what you need and want.

In the beginning of the job, we were working with Derek and were very happy with all aspects of the job which was approx. 80% complete. Then Derek left the firm without informing us. His firm did not call to tell us that he had resigned, that he wouldn't be keeping his appointments with us (I was stood up for two days) and the name of his replacement. It was only because I called the company that I learned about Derek's departure. After Derek left, subsequent work has been substandard. When we call about problems, the responding supervisor seems to minimize the problems or recommend that we take steps to address it (spray pesticides, adjust nozzles, apply systemic fungicides & pesticides) rather than Southscape doing what's necessary to fix the problems). We have had problems with a)irrigation coverage -- either excessive or inadequate in spots, b) drainage --drains get clogged with mulch , c) plant failure -- a few plants that Southscape installed are either not thriving or dying, and d) incorrect placement of drip nozzles resulting in death of our own shrubs. Even though I have asked Southscape to replace the failing plants that they installed, as per their 1 year warranty, I've been told that it is unlikely that they will do so.
Description of Work: Provided landscape design & installation for a large berm, installed irrigation system, planted 6 holly trees for privacy, build french drain in wet area, installed large stone pathway, created firepit area using lumber and stones, and widened the porch stairs.

Irrigation Related: I (Steve Woofter) personally went through all drip lines to ensure that they had the proper emitter and placement on the plants, both existing and newly installed. At time of installation, all planting were verified by myself to have a proper emitter placed. A few adjustments have been made since install. 4-5 lawn irrigation heads were adjusted one time o make sure they had proper coverage…they were off by about 1 foot. 2 lawn Nozzles had to be replaced since they were not covering the entire area on 9/25/13. Admittedly these were not the correct nozzles and we replaced them at no charge. However, these affected the lawn area only and if fact the lawn was in good shape where they were not correct so no detrimental impact. Flooding: After receiving an email from the customer, I went to the property the following week to find that the irrigation was running daily and the zone times were set too high. Some zones running twice the recommend time. I made the time adjustments and cut the watering back to 3 days a week. This was the main cause for the flooding due to over watering, as well as the large amount of rain we have received this year. Drainage: This was due to the large amount of rain we have receive this year, that side of the yard has no irrigation to cause the drain to fill with mulch. This could be remedied by installing atrium grates to the catch basins which is an elevated rounded grate. Recommendations Made: Any recommendations made were for existing plant materials, as well as the turf, which was being maintained by a different company. As I gave a price to do any application, our price was too high. Customer was very hands on with her property, and I recommended products she could purchase at any local garden center and how to apply said product. I was on this job about every other day while this job was going. Running materials, helping out the crews as well as doing some of the work myself. Any time the customer would call, I would be there, even after the job was complete. I have done numerous walk around the property at initial installation in early spring as well as more recently with the customer to make sure that she was satisfied. It was only until recent that these issues have come up.

VERY POOR EXPERIENCE. 1) Did not start out by pressure checking the system which was at 100 psi. Replaced w valves only rated to 70 psi then seen confused as to why they were blowing immediately. Charged me for the blown valves at wrong rating. 2)Showed up at my house without confirming or making apt then surprised I was not home. 3) left job incomplete and threatened bill collection/liens. 4) Didn't check system when parts replaced to see if system worked when done requiring multiple calls and visits.

Response from SOUTHSCAPE LANDSCAPING
The member called us on October 2, 2012 nearly 2 1/2 months after the initial irrigation repair visit (July 11, 2012) and only after we had begun collections procedures when attempts to contact him for overdue payments netted no results. At this time he stated that the system wasn’t working right and that the only reason he hadn’t contacted us sooner was because he didn’t want to “cause a fuss”. Thus, we were unaware that his irrigation system was not functioning properly. However, when we left the property from the original repair it was, in fact, working properly. We responded within a timely manner in each instance. Yes, once we showed up at his house unannounced and that was only because we had a tech in his exact neighborhood with a little extra time between. That is a very rare occurrence we tried to take advantage of. He wasn’t home so we called and scheduled an exact appointment with the member (Oct 1 @1pm) because he stated that he “wanted to be there to see the work completed first hand”. He wasn’t there for the Oct 1 appointment, thankfully his son was, and he was able to provide us access to the controller in the garage. We determined during this visit that the system required a pressure regulator. A quote for time and materials was provided to the member which he approved and then we scheduled the final repairs. These were done on (Oct 5) in-spite of that fact that the member still hadn’t paid his bill that was still past due. During the 10/5 visit, the member kept our tech at his house for an extra amount of time requiring he check the entire system yet again while he was present to make sure it was working properly. The system was found to be working correctly with the exception of 1 sprinkler that we suspect was damaged by the neighbor’s lawn maintenance crew per comments from the member. Our tech said the head was indeed hit by a weed eater. Finally, installing a pressure regulator on an exterior irrigation system is a fairly rare occurrence. In fact, over the past 11+ years of installing and maintaining irrigation systems we have only deemed it necessary less than a dozen times throughout the greater Charlotte area. Thus we did not lead off with checking the static water pressure of the system and normally do not. The member also states that we replaced the irrigation valves with a valve not rated to handle the pressure. The valve in need of repair was replaced with a different valve that what he had originally and there hasn’t been one problem with it since. As for the other valves that were worked on, we made repairs with the exact valve and/or parts as he currently had installed. His claim that we replaced the parts with inadequate parts is incorrect unless his system was installed using inadequate parts to begin with. Southscape Landscaping had nothing to do with the original installation. It’s truly unfortunate that the member is unhappy with our work as we have hundreds of satisfied customers. Based on our knowledge of the repairs needed, which were working when we left originally, the job was complete. Had we been contacted immediately afterward and made aware of an inadequate repair, we would have rescheduled service to be done as soon as we could get there. Generally, that would have been the next day. Sadly, we were not contacted about this problem for over two months and the member is upset with our work and invoice. We have, however, gone over our repair charges and feel as though all charges are warranted as billable under our Time & Materials structure.

They brought in new topsoil when we first bought this house. There was a bad rainstorm and there was a lot of damage to the lawn. They walked all over the topsoil and then they seeded it, instead of bringing a big roller and fixing the gullies. So my lawn even after three years is growing somewhat with footprint marks. The gullies were really deep and my husband measured it with a measuring yardstick. There was grass growing out of the 5 foot deep foot prints where the landscapers had walked. They never came back to pack it down before they put the seeds. They dumped it and filled in the gully a little bit. They put down seeds after filling the gullies and then we never saw them again. It?s very rough and very unsafe to walk in the backyard. They didn?t come back to get it finished and there were several things about them which made us very unhappy. We didn?t pay them the balance until they came out. So they finally came out and I didn?t want to mess with them anymore and I didn?t want them to put a lien on my house. So I just paid the balance but I would never recommend them to anybody. I can?t use my backyard now. I should have taken pictures but I couldn?t do so because of my family situations. I just couldn?t put up the fight that I needed to put up. I just wanted them out of my life. It cost us about $7000 and we didn?t know anybody that could give us a recommendation. Their brochures were very glossy and beautiful. It looked like a good quality advertisement as compared to others which were hand written and spelt wrong. So it looked like a very professional flier. It was my mistake that I went with them and I learnt my lesson. They were supposed to be here on several days and they didn?t come at all and it took them a lot longer to get started. The sales guy who initially came out to draw all the pictures was great. However, he wasn?t the one who was concerned with the work being done. I wouldn?t use their services again. I couldn?t try and explain to the owner what was going on. They were not my best vendors that I have used since I moved to Charlotte.

I was initially having problems in the past with the mowers leaving trash in the yard such has soda tops, cigarette wrappers, etc. which I reported to Angie's list. I do still find bits of trash in the driveway or yard from time to time. The lack of timely pruning is very disappointing. I am a good and prompt paying customer, and expected better service than this.
