Though I started my company 16 years ago with the idea that customer satisfaction should be #1, I have been in the construction industry for 28 years working in all phases of building. I pride myself in the knowledge that I listen to what the customer wants and am able to give the customer a final product that they are happy with. I'm able to do this because I am on the job doing the actual work or there when my sub-contractors are working. I keep a connection with my customers by letting them know that they can call me any time that I may not be at the job. My goal is to design a project so that it blends in with the house and neighborhood and looks as if it was there from when the house was built. I use sub-contractors for the specialty trades such as electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, and other trades such as drywall, insulation, block masons, and framing specialist if the jobs are bigger and need more manpower.
My company consist of myself and one other employee so to keep that personal touch there.
I also work with homeowners who are trying to sell their homes and need small repairs done after the home inspectors have left their list, or to enhance the curb appeal.
I also love working with people who have small jobs that need to be done around the house that may be more than they wish to handle.
I have also worked with owners who have wanted to build their own homes and do work on it themselves but need guidance in the planning and implementation of such a project.I will do as little or as much as the owner wishes.
I do not charge for estimates. If the owner wishes me to design and draw plans fees are charged based upon what the owner wishes for me to do and develope.
I will give a homeowner a price based upon what they want and work with them if their wants are over their budgets to get the most for their money.
We are especially sensitive to homeowners knowing that they are living in the home when we are doing work and make sure that we use every precaution to keep the jobsite clean and safe for everyone in the family.

Rick and Josh did an incredible job modernizing our North Asheville home. The quality of the work was excellent and they were communicative and transparent. They added an entirely new deck to the lower level of our home and the craftsmanship was top notch. Rick is a true professional and I would absolutely work with him again.

Rick has been so great to work with! He's good at communicating his progress and transparent about things that are happening outside his control (ex: COVID-related delay from the screen company). The deck and patio he built are BEAUTIFUL and will last for many, many years. His prices were also more than reasonable. Would definitely work with him again!

I have used the Carolina Carpenter (Rick Cox and son) for many years; the most professional and trustworthy of any contractor I have ever hired. This time, the water damage was hardly visible, but behind the facade there was considerable damage all the way to the framing. The problem, caused by improper drainage, was identified by the contractor. He used the very best materials to fix it. Most important, he came back several times to make sure what he did was working as intended. The finished job looks beautiful and I know it will last for a long time. Rick Cox is the best!
Description of Work: Reconstructed a whole section of the house that had water damage due to improper drainage. Alo repaired siding and front door threshold.

Absolutely Fantastic I have worked with many wonderful contractors over the years but Rick Cox (dba Carolina Carpenter) is at the top of the list. He and his son, Josh, are extremely talented, resourceful and get the job done at a reasonable cost. They and the electrician, plumber and other professionals they use are delightful to work with and of the highest honesty and integrity. In June 2018 my wife and I purchased a house in Connestee Falls, Brevard, NC which was beautifully located but in need a great deal of work. After interviewing a number of contractors, we chose Rick because of his directness, obvious competence and easy manner. The renovation required complete gutting of the core areas, including the removal of several walls and a faux stone wood-burning fireplace. Rick started while we were still in NY and when we arrived in mid-August, he had neatly removed the fireplace. In the following 11 months, he replaced it with gas burning fireplaces in the living room and adjoining Master Bedroom (a very difficult thing to do in the space we had), expanded the rear hall, closed several exterior windows, installed 4 exterior windows and sliding doors, re-floored, re-sided and painted most of the common areas, rebuilt and upgraded the stairway to the lower level and put in a fantastic new kitchen. The project cost six figures and encountered many setbacks as removal of walls and floors exposed poor electrical work and many other preexisting deficiencies. However, in each case, Rick, Josh and his associates developed creative solutions and, as we went along, they helped us refine our vision of what we wanted so that the finished product far exceeded our initial expectations. With his fine carpentry expertise, Rick provided a new beamed ceiling and log mantle and wood work around the new living room fireplace which is itself the artistic focal point of the room. He also transformed an eye-sore half wall into a beautiful built-in cabinet which is integral to the new dining area. Rick and Josh work quietly and efficiently and are upfront about timelines and their availability. In fact, when the demands of a difficult new client caused them to fall behind the timeline they set, they worked on weekends to get current. You would be fortunate to have Rick and Josh working with you. We were. They came as workmen but stayed as friends. See above. Seems like a nice and knowledgeable guy, but dishonest nevertheless.
Description of Work: We hired Rick to remodel our ho,e while we lived away. The agreement was that he would keep careful track of his time and we would pay him by the hours plus materials. It took much longer to get things done than expected and the bills seemed ridiculous. We finally asked for a detailed calendar of hours/days worked. He billed us for full days of labor for 2 people on days no one even came to the house. On days they did work, they were here for 2-6 hours and we were billed for full days. This resulted in us being over billed by over 30% (over $20,000). We know this because we have a security system. He disabled most of it on day one but did not realize we could still determine the exact date and time our doors were opened and closed. We refused to pay his full amount and demanded a receipt showing that our account was paid in full. He promptly complied rather than face legal action..

I have been in this business for over 35 yrs with the last 22 yrs owning my own company. During that time my customers have been my only source of advertising of which my honesty and integrity have been the number one attribute that has stuck out to them. These particular folks have decided not to pay their final invoice and stated some misleading things about me. I did complete their project and all the many extras by the date that we agreed upon. To my knowledge never knowingly tampered with their alarm system. I only billed them for the hours that were associated with the completion of the their project both on and off site as needed same as I've done with many satisfied customers before. As far as my honesty I believe my other customers say it best and I stand by my record. I will continue to do business as I always have in the past by giving quality work and being honest with my customers and everyone I meet. I firmly believe that in the end all a man has is his word.

Project went very well - we're excited about the house that we used to enjoy as a weekend retreat but now see as more of a real home that someday might be full-time. Rick and Josh and the subcontractors they work with do high quality work. Rick came up with a couple of design change suggestions that resulted in a beautiful place. One of them - to open the wall between the kitchen and the sun room, providing a breakfast bar in between - "made" the project. What used to be a cool place, but dark and closed in, is now an open, light, inviting space. We were across the country when Rick first imagined this change while replacing the 'offending' wall - he rearranged the construction schedule around our trip, enabling us to get back in time to agree to the change. Although we're not highly skilled we wanted to do as much as we could to contribute sweat equity to this project, and Rick was willing to work with us on a cost-plus basis. We saved some money by doing a lot of the destruction and cleanup as well as painting and some of the finish work (molding). Rick and Josh were patient working with us and very willing and able in teaching us techniques. We mostly live on the other side of the state and also traveled out of state for about two months just as the project started. Rick has been very good throughout at maintaining communications via phone, text and email. We were pleased with his communications and also, as he got to know us, his ability to distinguish which decisions to consult with us on and which to make on his own. We knew going in that the total cost would exceed any estimate (as all construction does), an issue exacerbated here by working with an old house that had issues we couldn't know until we got in there. Rick provided very detailed information on costs throughout the process, and we're very pleased that he was fair and honest all the way through. We're very happy that we chose Carolina Carpenter for this work, will call Rick again if we ever do another project in the area, and highly recommend the company.
Description of Work: We did a major renovation of our vacation home near Hendersonville. This house was built in the 1950's and has had a lot of wear and tear as well as quite a bit of DIY work done through the years. The project involved 3 expansions - a new kitchen, a new sunroom, and a new master bath/utility room, increasing total size of the house from about 900 ft2 to about 1500. Additional work entailed repairing parts of the house that had deteriorated (new roof, almost entirely new wiring, new plumbing) as well as other fixes like replacing living room ceiling.

We hired Rick to convert our existing screened porch to a sun room. He had wonderful ideas to make this happen and great follow through. From tearing out the walls, rebuilding the room (but saving our existing slate floor), installing windows and a new door, and the final painting, it was an excellent job. He paid a great deal of attention to design and detail. He will be our go-to guy for any additional projects we may want to do. We highly recommend him.

Work to be done on an older house to add updated and efficient spaces that would blend in with the style and quality of the home. Construction was to be done while occupied. Can't say enough about how easy Rick was to work with. He even traveled out-of-state to meet with us before starting. He always was so accommodating, always ready to discuss any fine tuning. He was always cheerful and a complete gentleman while working on the premises, with adults and children. He worked hard to find the appropriately designed parts and pieces (custom doors, handles, hinges, molding, etc.). We went over every detail carefully and we came to a consensus. I always felt reassured that it would be done right, and if there was a problem or slight delay with a part, he'd call. His price seemed very fair, as far as I could determine. We clearly defined and decided all costs up front and there were no overages. This was a deciding factor I really wanted. The quality of work was high. He showed up on time to begin, worked most every day and left it finished as per our desired deadline.

Rick Cox and his crew at Carolina Carpenters were skilled and professional from the very beginning to the very end of our project. They designed and created a focal point in the living area of our home. There were two aspects of the work that we felt were exceptional: The quality and care that was put into the project was outstanding and unlike many contractors, Rick Cox did exactly what he said he would do and when he said he would do it. We will happily use the services of Carolina Carpenter again for our next home renovation project.

Rick was very responsive to my emails and phone calls. He consulted with me if he found any additional work that needed to be done and kept me up to date on the progress. The damage needing to be repaired was a little more extensive in some places than anticipated and he repaired all of it so it would not become a problem in the future. His work was high quality, he used good materials and my railing looks even better than the one he replaced. I would highly recommend and plan to use him again in the near future for some additional work.

Rick and his helper spent 3days making sure the jacks in the crawl space for the foundation were on the right amount of concrete and spaced right.
