My husband and I vacation every September in the Outer Banks. This year, we rented a two-bedroom, oceanfront unit with large balcony facing the ocean from Midgett Realty for the week of Sept. 8-15, 2019. Because of Hurricane Dorian, we were not able to use the unit from Sunday to Tuesday; no fault of Midgett of course. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, we were allowed on Hatteras Island and made our way to our vacation rental excitedly. As soon as we exited our car in the driveway of the unit, the smell of rotting trash in unemptied trashcans filled the air. Upon opening the front door to the unit, we were then hit with a gross smell and hot air. There was also a large dying bug on the floor. After reading other reviews, I am afraid this was a cockroach. My stomach turn as I write this. My husband tried to turn on the central air only to find it wasn't working. We called Midgett, but did not get an answer and left a voicemail. We tried using the screens in the storm doors in order to get a breeze to flow through, but both doors were broken in such a way that the screens were not usable. The hurricane is not to blame for these doors and I have pics to prove it. Only 3 windows in the unit had screens, but 2 screens were torn so badly that they were not usable. When we were not getting a return call from Midgett, we unpacked our laptop and contacted Midgett through the chat feature of their website. A maintenance man was sent over. The maintenance man informed us that the central air could not be fixed and that it had been broken for over a week -- well before the hurricane, which I am sure Midgett would try to use as an excuse. The maintenance man arrived with 2 very small window units, which also goes to show that Midgett knew the air was not working, could not be fixed and sent the maintenance man over with these 2 insufficient units. These window units could not even cool the living room/dining areas let alone either bedroom. Again, Midgett knew well in advance of our arrival that the central air unit was "shot", yet did absolutely NOTHING to address this issue and allowed their "guests" to walk into what felt like an oven. Were they just hoping we would just endure this without complaint? Unacceptable management of property. A complete failure of their job. After the fiasco with the air, we then started to unpack. This is when we noticed how utterly filthy the unit was. The furniture in the living room and dining room had dust, dirt and dried food in multiple places. Sand was abundant throughout the unit. The dishwasher handle had caked on black gunk of some sort. Because of this, I have no idea what the inside looked like. The refrigerator was dirty, pieces of food on the shelves, and the handle was covered in grease with plentiful dust atop the grease. Multiple light bulbs were burnt out. There was a crack in a wall in the bathroom with black mold growing out. The light fixture at the front door did not work and was hanging off, as well as one of the fixtures on the sand-covered balcony. The windowsills were filthy with sand, dirt and what looked like "droppings". We did our best to deal with these issues, but the place was just too disgusting. When in the unit (which we tried to stay out of as much as possible), we wore slippers. Instead of enjoying home-cooked meals eaten on the balcony, we ate all of our meals out because there was no way we would use Midgett's utterly filthy kitchen, appliances, etc. As we were packing up to leave early, Bryan Fail, a Midgett property "manager" showed up. Apparently, the people staying in the unit next to us were also having issues and had called to complain. When Fail came to address the complaints of the people in the other unit, they informed him that we too were unhappy. This prompted his visit to us. I personally gave him a "tour" of the property he was supposed to be managing. As with other reviews I've since read on this site and many others, he was not as sympathetic as one would expect a manager would be with unhappy customers, and seemed to want to blame all of our complaints on the hurricane. I am fairly certain Dorian had nothing to do with the dishwasher gunk, greasy dirty refrigerator, etc. He asked me to send him an email detailing all my issues and he would see what he could do. Well, he apparently cannot do anything. Upon returning home, I sent the requested email along with some pics. It is now October and I have never even received a reply. As I stated above, I've read multiple reviews regarding Midgett since returning home. I am appalled at the responses from Midgett on the reviews that allow a response. It seems they do not want to take responsibility for maintaining their rental homes and blame their "guests" for their own negligence. No worries. We will return to the Outer Banks again next year and find other accommodations. We will never rent from Midgett again and will warn others away from them as well. The hurricane did not ruin our vacation - Midgett Realty is to blame for our complaints. I do have plenty of pictures to prove all of the above and will post them on a review site where they can be uploaded. Look for them please before giving Midgett a dime.
