concrete repair, replacement windows

They were extremely slow in completing the work for the porch that we had built. They didn't consider us to be a primary candidate as a customer because after the very first day of putting up the structural parts and the heavy beams, it was two guys and from then on it was one guy. Most of the time, he'd show up after hours and work by flashlight which is just nutty to do. They didn't think through their process and didn't have their measurements correct. They have a beam above the windows which was supposed to be about 12 inches tall but they miscalculated and it was about 20 inches tall, just a whole stack of two by fours laying on each other which is again the wrong way to do things. The porch itself was basically all windows, with posts in between them and they ordered a special kind of window that I had researched on online and decided to purchase. The new walls that they built had special windows in them and they measured the space between the posts, they were supposed to measure that and send it to the company, the company manufactures the windows and sends them back and they install them. If you measure right, everything works well. There's one set of windows we cannot move, its bound because the space is so tight and all of the others squeak from one degree to another, its extremely hard to get up in that. It defeats the whole purpose of this type of window. I haven't called them back, I've had a bunch of other things going on. I'm just not confident that they did things right. They also messed up in the inspection process. The contractor didn't call in for certain inspections that were to take place during he construction process and they almost had to tear the whole structure down to show that there was certain attachment to hold the posts made to the concrete, so if it wasn't for me vouching for the fact that I saw them actually put an attachment then they'd probably have had to do that and that would not have been very good. I did the whole project out and got 4 or 5 prices and they had the best price but it wasn't best by much. The owner was professional but the subcontractor he had to do the work was lees than professional and pretty mouthy. I wouldn't recommend them.
Description of Work: They did a concrete porch that was already existing and they put a roof and two walls around it to form a room.

Response from We are no longer accepting new customers.
As in all our reviews we address the customer’s comments thoroughly so that new clients can have both sides of the story to better judge our work and future relationships with them. Please read our response. Home Renu Member: They were extremely slow in completing the work for the porch that we had built. They didn't consider us to be a primary candidate as a customer because after the very first day of putting up the structural parts and the heavy beams, it was two guys and from then on it was one guy. Home Renu: As with any general contractor, business does not stop when a new job is acquired. Ongoing work must continued, staff, subcontractors, marketing and overhead must be watched and managed. The business must be properly and professionally lead so work gets done and bills get paid. When our team takes on a new project the rest of our projects do not stop dead in their tracks. Whose does? Everyone is a primary customer. We do not gauge the importance of a customer by the size of their wallet and we treat all our clients with equal courtesy and respect. Member: Most of the time, he'd show up after hours and work by flashlight which is just nutty to do. It defeats the whole purpose of this type of window. I haven't called them back, I've had a bunch of other things going on. I'm just not confident that they did things right. Home Renu: Many times when standing around talking about a design measurements and concepts change by the time implementation happens. All parts of design and concept are in a state of flux until plans are drawn and as is frequently the case the client does not know details that construction and/or methods of building might differ from original brainstorming. We thought a 12” header would do the job but later felt the pitch of the roof was not going to be as steep as originally thought so a taller header was designer. Multiple layers of two by material was most certainly the smartest way to create the desired result. When there is a small job such as this little sunroom frequently we will only allot one carpenter. If there is no need in wasting resources by paying two or three wages then it is not wise to do so. Work by flashlight? Really? This was a case of an existing slab where we built two headers supported by equidistant four by four supports which then supported a shed roof. We shingled with like-styled shingles, sided the gables with like-styled siding, covered all wood with beautiful white vinyl post sleeves, installed a superior 1-3/4” thick storm door and installed well engineered EzeBreeze windows. We were well versed with the great EzeBreeze system and knew exactly how they were supposed to be ordered and installed. We created the spaces, ordered the windows according to the spaces we created and they went in perfectly. If you had a concern about one of the sets of windows not operating right you most certainly should have called us to see what was causing the problem, not wait 12 months to complain and leave negative feedback. We have no idea what happened in 12 months of use that could have altered our work or caused one set out of four to become hard to operate. We could have inspected the window to ascertain if it was a manufacturing defect or not. The manufacturer is terrific in their customer service. Member: They also messed up in the inspection process. Home Renu: This statement is simply erroneous. We did not mess up the inspection process. You were the contractor on this job not Home Renu. You were very proud to tell us in the first meeting how you had 30 years experience in the field and you had done drawings of the screened porch and you had already pulled the permit yourself. That is public record. It was discussed then and there that you would be calling in the inspections since you had pulled the permit. Inspections were not called in when instructed to causing delays in our timeline. We never had to “almost tear the whole structure down” to satisfy an inspector’s questions. We removed some previous work to expose the parts in question because the inspections were not called in properly by the permit holder. We do thank you sincerely for choosing us in the beginning and stating that our owner is professional. We also thank you for considering our pricing to be valued at an A. We wish you all the best. Best to you, Eric Cook of Home Renu

My patio was disintegrating and the stones were getting detached from the ground because the grout was disintegrating. In addition, the water was not draining properly and a water was stagnant at the back of the patio close to the house. Renu gave us a very competitive price and they also offered to paint the patio. They did a very good work in painting the patio, even though had to be performed twice for satisfactory results; the first time the paint was disintegrating. Also they strengthened the construction of the patio. In the beginning, the work happened as scheduled. However, when the work finished the draining of the water was not resolved. On the contrary, became worse. I called them to fix the issue, and they came back and forth to fix the issue. Unfortunately, the issue was not resolved and still the patio had the same problem. In addition in order to fix the problem they hurt the aesthetics of the patio. The owner of Renu admitted the problem and he promised to fix the issue and is going to add more slope to the patio. Unfortunately, he did a minor fixes and the problem of drainage is still there. The communications back and forth happened for one year. Not happy.

Thank you very much for hiring Home Renu. We are very pleased to have saved you thousands with our competitive pricing. Your patio is in much better shape than it was after years of deterioration. We cleaned and repainted your retainer wall a brilliant white and it looked outstanding. We completely demo’d the existing old flagstone patio, installed new stone and thoroughly cleaned the completed job. The natural uneven surface of flagstone was catching some water and causing a little pooling which proved unavoidable and evaporated naturally as water will do in an outdoor environment. Upon returning several times to reinspect the work we saw that a hot tub installed on the patio was allowed to drain quite frequently onto the natural stone and chlorine bleach from the tub’s water was staining consistently leaving a very unpleasant appearance. We hope this practice has stopped. We wish you the best in your new jobs. Best to you, Eric Cook of Home Renu

Provider was reliable in keeping appointments and completing work, took time to give accurate estimates and followed-up to assure work was done accurately and of high quality. He required sub-contractor to re-do part of work that was not to specifications (which we would not have known about). We are pleased with the work completed.

Thank you for your great review. The damaged soffit and fascia repairs came out beautifully, the new painting and those new white vinyl handrails really added a striking feature to your home's appearance. The safety bonus for your aging parents isn't to be overlooked either. The new roof you added now drains properly to the gutter and leaf guard system we installed and the nice big downspouts will efficiently take water away from your home's foundation. At Home Renu we take our performance, our responsibility and our accountability seriously in all aspects your projects though you may not see it or even know about it. We were very happy with them. They were very good. We weren't living here and we trusted them with the work and they did a good job. They were creative and willing to give suggestions and that was important to us since we were not present at the site. Pricing was competitive with the other estimates we got.

Thank you very much for hiring Home Renu. We were very happy to save you a whopping 33% over the other three contractors you interviewed. Your new closed crawlspace turned out spectacularly and will save you thousands in heat and air conditioning bills not to mention there will no longer be any mildew problems from that swamp under your home we removed by installing all the french drains and sump pumps. When we had the opportunity we upgraded materials above and beyond the contract and at no increase to the client. It was a decision I made to further improve the value of the final project. As your general contractor my job is to have the crews there working hard, correctly and efficiently. I do not have to be there every day otherwise the dozens of other jobs we are doing would not get addressed. When workers prove to be ineffective or show that they have misrepresented themselves or violate Home Renu's policies they get removed from the job. Only occasionally does this happen but it does happen. That is also part of my duty as your general contractor. When a client adds or deletes or alters original items on a contract it's called a change order and those can delay or speed up a job's completion. Change orders almost always add cost and time to a job and in this case thankfully the change orders were minimal. As was also the case here a crew on Friday was asked not to return on Monday due to violations of company policy and a new crew began that Monday. It was that second crew's exemplary work that created no delays and the job was finished efficiently, completely and with all financial considerations in place not to mention on time. I called to set up a time to meet so he could look at our house and give us a quote. He showed up promptly the next morning and was extremely helpful and friendly. I bought the would from Home Depot and Home Renu was able to quote us a far less price and they even fixed part of our floor that was damaged (which Home Depot refused to do). I can't say enough good things about this company. They definitely went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the finished product. They were always there on time (if not earlier). They did a phenomenal job and worked after hours to make sure everything was perfect. They even fixed a few things around the house for us that I hadn't even asked about. I can't recommend Home Renu enough. I've already told a lot of my friends and neighbors about them and they are planning on using them in the future. I will absolutely use them again the next time I need anything done with my house. Thanks again guys!!!

We had gotten a couple of quotes and Home Renu's quote was very competitive and they were the only one to come up with a solution for the water issue. We were very happy with the results, the screened in porch exceeded our expectations and the workers were prompt and courteous. We had to have them come out and do additional work beyond our original contract as the water issue was worse than we both realized. They rerouted a downspout and installed a french drain next to the patio and that has resolved our water issues in that area. Overall we were pleased with the results and have already spent lots of time in the new screened porch. I would not hesitate to use Home Renu again in the future.

First, let me be clear that this group did not do any work for me. The issues and the reasons for my rating is their lack of responsiveness. When they first came out to see my project (deck addition and/or porch expansion) they told me it would take 2 weeks for me to receive their estimate. I was surprised and told them I'd really like it sooner if possible. Others that came out gave me pricing on the spot or the next day (and these were experienced contractors). Well, after I had to call and email them several times and did not always get a response, I became a bit frustrated. Finally, when Eric said the costs where coming (now 3 weeks) he said the delay was due to how busy they are. Well, that is actually great for them but not for those of us that are looking for contractors and help in a timely manner. So, bottom line, if you are not in any sort of time line, call them, but if you have a timeframe in mind, you might want to call someone else. The other contractors do great work as well, so these guys are not the only game in town.

Very professional and confident. I spoke to 3 different contractors and Home Renu made it a very simple to chose them. The price was reasonable and the work was very good. Home Renu managed to jack the floor up and correct the problem without breaking the ceramic tile in the foyer. They started the work in a reasonable time and completed the job quickly. This was important because the house was up for sale and we need to show it. It's difficult to find contractors it seems (for me at least) that are punctual and professional and do not make you feel like you are being over charged. I highly recommend Home Renu and I will definitely use this company in the future.
Description of Work: Corrected water damaged wood under the house from where water was seeping in from the front entry for years. Joists, sill plate and beam were rotted out. Floor had to be jacked up a little and the sill, beam, and 4 joists needed to be replaced. Eric Cook owner of Home Renue is a Professional Craftsman you can trust. Before moving to Oregon I had the pleasure to get to know Eric when I hired him to do deck repairs and drainage work on my home in Oak Hollow Estates in High Point, NC. He Fenced in my back yard. His carpentry skills are flawless and his knowledge of home systems make him a leader in the construction / home repair business. His pricing was on target and he does not ask for payment until the job was correct. My drainage problem baffled 3 drainage specialists. Eric was determined to find a solution and he did. He has done painting and porch repairs for me, also. Unforeseen events led my family to move to Oregon. Our home in NC was on the market for 9 months. During this time Eric inspected and made minor repairs to the house. When the home under contract Eric did repairs that were requested by the buyers. It was reassuring to know that Eric Cook was on the job. Not only is he capable for the job, he is worthy of your trust. He has a personality that is enjoyable. I know you will be pleased to hire him. I recommend him for any job and I would hire him again. My dog even misses him.

On Tuesday 6/4, Eric answered the phone and came over immediately to look at the frensch doors and kitchen. He offered suggestions and seemed very interested in the job and was very knowledgable overall about what the project would take. I explained my situation and told him I was in a bit of a hurry for the french doors to be done and he took some photos and said he would get back to me soon. I hadn't heard anything by Monday 6/10 so I called him and he said he was putting it together and would call me back later that day or the next day. By Wednesday 6/12 in the afternoon he hadn't called so I tried and got his voicemail and left a message. I never have heard a response. It appears that Home Renu is a solid company due to the previous reviews, but upon further inspection it seems that they really only prefer larger jobs near the 5 digit range. I am disappointed that Eric didn't simply respond and say that they were not interested in doing the work, because he knew I was on limited time. This simple courtesy could have allowed me to save time by seeking someone else to do the job.
Description of Work: I called to get an estimate on replacing some interior french doors and refacing cabinets in the kitchen.

Uh Oh..I did it again. I could not quite get to a valued customer quick enough. I am sorry and am trying to speed up our pricing process. Our work load as you can see from our great reviews is creating an avalanche of requests for us to help with more and more great projects big and small. It is not the size of the projects that creates an hierarchy of considerations because we value all requests equally. It's the volume of wonderful folks who would like us to do work for them and my lack of organizational skills to get to everyone quickly. I'd be mad at me too. In fact I am. We are getting better and better as our business grows and thankfully less and less prospective work will fall through the cracks. Thank you for your review. Best to you, Eric Cook of Home Renu

It went very well. I called them the first day and he called me back immediately. He came and had a look at the area. We got a senior discount. We were very happy with work. We had to get approval from our homeowners association and I didn't know how to fill out all the areas on the form and they helped me complete it through email.

We thank you so much for your confidence and call to us to help with your accessibility problems. Many times as we age it gets more and more difficult and uncomfortable to climb and even step up onto areas you really want to enjoy. Your deck was definitely in need of demolition and rebuilding and we lowered it for you as well so you could enjoy it with minimal effort by you and your husband. It was a pleasure working with you and we look forward to helping with your next project. Best to you, Eric Cook of Home Renu

Eric came on his own one time (was prompt about calling back as I left the initial message on the Saturday before Memorial Day and he returned my call that Monday - on Memorial Day) and then brought two other people to see/discuss what we're hoping to do to the deck two days later. We are still waiting to hear back from Home Renu with a quote - it's been about a week.

Thank you very much for your review. We were very happy to come out and price your large two level deck rebuild. I only wish you had been a little more patient than 3 or 4 days before leaving your review. It takes a little time to design and price such a project as we discussed especially using such an exquisite material as the bamboo/HDPE recyclable and sustainable decking. We understand you were under a lot of tension and pressure from your husband's accident and we hope he recovers quickly and completely. Best to you, Eric Cook of Home Renu

We wanted an enclosed deck and they did some designs and it was very nice and it turned out well. Initially it was almost $20,000 and we brought it down to $16,000. We eliminated a few of the more involved architecture. They can be expensive but they can work with you so you can still be within budget.

We are very proud of the screened porch design you choose from our professional design team. It really enhanced your home and created a beautiful new living space to enjoy year round. We do realize that things can get expensive and we try very hard to match your budget to the very best possible design to increase value and pleasure to your environment. We hope your husband keeps creating those fantastic paintings too. I hope to buy one from our next project.
