I had originally scheduled a different contractor to come pour the concrete foundation for my workshop but rain had set him back to the point he recommended I call Mark. My father had purchased airline tickets to fly in from Texas to help me frame the building and the delays would have made the trip useless. I wanted to have a brick knee-wall to match the house and also provide an additional 12" to my walls; I wanted 9' ceilings. Mark showed up on 13 March with a friend Darryll Reid, who Mark said did good work with brick. Both Mark and Darryll knew I was in a severe time crunch so it was of little surprise when they had an impromptu meeting in the truck then approached me with an estimate $2,000 more than the original contractor. It was a "take it or leave it" deal. I had no option as another airline ticket would have cost an additional $500 and my father and I were both unable to change our leave. I agreed with the reiteration I needed the brick walls and the concrete complete by Friday, 15 March. "It's a day and a half job for the brick and the concrete can be done in hours after the brick." Darryll said he would "be right back" with his workers. He showed four hours later. I should have stopped the entire process there! Darryll took 6 days to get the brick walls up. This is a whole other story/nightmare. By this point, Mark didn't "remember talking about" a small concrete ramp into the workshop. One of many things that should have been written into a contract. Mark poured the concrete while I was gone for the day but when I returned that evening, the walls and floor did not look level. I grabbed my laser level and confirmed it wasn't. I called Mark and explained the disaster I thought had happened; he agreed to show the next day. I called a surveyor to bring his equipment. It was confirmed, with all parties present, the walls and floor were off level by 6 1/2 inches over just 26'!! The walls were screwed up by two full courses of brick! Upon realizing the situation, Mark couldn't believe it; neither could anyone but Darryll who made excuses. Mark then said it could be fixed but he wouldn't be the one paying for it! "I go off the brick when I pour the slab." He did not check to see if the brick was level or even check his own pour to see if it was level. He does this for a living and I was able to see how bad it was at sunset with no concrete experience! His recommendation was that he could put a drain at the low end instead of re-pouring the slab or putting a "cap" of concrete to level it (cheaper option). I demanded Darryll re-lay the brick correctly. He did show up the NEXT day and his guys fixed two walls (not four). While this was occurring, he tells me Mark reminded him about the drain and gave him a concrete saw to cut a drain in the slab. Well, if that's Mark's plan, I guess it's the only option I have. Darryll never showed to finish the other walls, constantly made excuses, ignored my calls and even took OTHER JOBS in the meantime. I fired Darryll and hired another mason who finished the job in ONE hour! Bottom line: Mark sub-contracted Darryll to complete the brick, Mark didn't quality check before pouring, didn't check his own work and now claims he never agreed to put in a drain. I have a floor that isn't level and a 9"x9" hole cut in my floor that goes nowhere! I paid $6,300 and did not get the product I was promised. It will cost another $2,000 to have the foundation fixed. $8,300 if I want it done correctly. The original contractor quote was $4,500!! Avoid Mark, Rock Steady Concrete and especially Darryll Reid of Goldsboro! Neither one have the integrity to accept responsibility for their mistakes and give me what I paid (overpaid)for.
Description of Work: I contracted Mark to pour a concrete slab with a 12-inch knee wall as the foundation for a 600 sf workshop I was building.
