First, the cable was ran backwards. He did NOT complete the work, asked me to sand the drywall mud so he didn’t have to come back. Was very aggressive when I didn’t want to pay him for incomplete work and gave him a check against my better judgement. When I asked him to fix his error, he told me he would gladly come back and stick the cable up my a$$.
Description of Work: Run HMDI cable from AV Closet to TV. Fill in TV nook above fireplace

I must say Larry was on time for the quotes and also to do the work. The one morning that he was late he did call to tell me he was going to be arriving late to start. I also pulled his name off a sign in my neighborhood and decided to give him a shot. Half the reason he got the work was most of the other carpenters didn't show or never sent a quote. It was a few months from the initial quote until I called him to do the work. So he came back and looked over the job again. We walked the house and he agreed to the same price again. That was a Friday and he started the work the following Monday. At the time I did give him a check for $650 for materials. It was deposited promptly as it hit my bank account that night. He showed up Monday morning to start the work and continued until about 4pm. He called me to let me know he would be back the following morning to complete the work. I did check all the first days work that evening and it all looked OK. There were a few small items I noted for him to fix the next morning. Small things that he wouldn't have really noticed since it was on the inside of the house. He called me the next morning saying he was going to be late. Not a problem as I understand things happen and as long as I get a call I don't get irritated. He showed up and we went over the few items from the 1st days work and he fixed them no problem. We did a final walk through when complete and noticed two things he missed. Again no problem and he fixed them with his assistant. They did a less than average cleanup job after everything was complete. I did opt to save a few $ and do the caulk and painting myself. Overall I'm satisfied, bit I don't think I would use him again. I sit here and think he did not do the most detailed job like others have but I didn't pay those prices and it was still an adequate job. He didn't do a beautiful caulk job and hidden nails, but not a hack job at all. Adequate work that got the job done satisfactorily. ADDED After I did all the caulk work I look at his job and think he did it was fast as he could to get out of here. So I changed my review to say I would not use him again. Also I noticed yesterday he broke something at my house and never said anything to me. It wasn't an expensive item but he tried to hid it which just made me irate. Everyone need to avoid this "Quality Carpenter". UPDATE** I went back and updated his work to an F. I got a closer look at the work on the roof and its an absolute fail. He cut corners because he didn't want to buy the additional materials. !!!!AVOID!!!!
Description of Work: I had Larry replace some rotten wood on the outside of my house. Mostly corner boards, siding and window frames.

On October 27, 2011, Larry Young and Daniel, who he stated was his son, visited my house to discuss work on the deck, building rooms and creating storage space for this house. After checking out 4 references that Larry provided (they all provided very positive statements about the quality and reliability of Larry Young’s work), Larry Young and I agreed that he would come by on January 19, 2012 to start the work. At my house on January 19, 2012, Larry and I agreed that he would start by building a large storage shelf supported from the ceiling in the garage, for which he estimated $875 total cost, of which was $350 was for materials. I provided to Larry Young a check for $350 to purchase these materials. Larry Young cashed the check on January 19 and then indicated that the bank did not make the funds immediately available to him, so he proposed rescheduling the work one week later on January 26. On January 26, Larry Young called and rescheduled the work to February 2. On February 1, he called and rescheduled the work to February 6. He did not arrive to do the work on February 6 or any time thereafter. He did not answer voicemails that my wife and I left for him at 919-817-7063 on February 6 and 8 and in which my wife and I requested that he inform us about when he could do the work. On February 10, 2012, I called him at 919-817-7063 from a telephone number that he did not recognize. He answered the telephone and hung up once he realized that I was the person calling. A minute later, I called back to Larry Young’s telephone number 919-817-7063 and left voicemail in which, due to lack of communication from him and due to indications that he would not carry out the work as agreed on, I cancelled the agreement to build a storage shelf in the garage and stated that the $350 needs to be returned. Larry Young has not responded the voicemail and has not returned the $350. No materials were delivered for the $350 and no work was ever performed. Pure fraud.

Found Larry via signs for "quality carpenter" in our neighborhood. Figuring he was out of work we decided to give him a job repairing our aging deck, stairs, and potting shed. The potting shed is located under the deck and had a leaky roof. Really we wanted the leaky roof fixed and the deck was in the way so we decided to kill two birds with one stone. Initially Larry came out and estimated $1000 for repairing the deck and stairs -- mostly labor where he would attempt to reuse the existing deck boards by flipping and cleaning them. Being somewhat green, this idea seemed fine to us at the time. He had some other jobs lined up but would return for an official estimate and begin work in a week. Three weeks later he gave us a call and said he was ready to go. The prior jobs had run long, but he hadn't contacted us to tell us what was going on. Eager to start work at this point we had him draw up an estimate which came in at $1400 -- $1000 for the deck and $400 for the stairs. Thought it was unusual that the price was not what was originally quoted but figured we had misunderstood that the stairs were a separate charge. He said that there would be an additional quote for sealing the roof of the shed once he tore up the deck and had a look. Cut a check for materials and he said he would return the next day. Larry returned the next day with materials and ready to go. He began with the stairs, tearing out the old steps and solidifying the handrails which had become wobbly. He placed down new wooden stairs and banisters. He went quickly, but reviewing the work later we noticed there were several stairs which were not screwed in correctly (missing screws) which we had to repair ourselves. Next, we helped him move the furniture off the deck and he started to bring up the existing decking board. As he brought up the deck he noticed several rotten boards and told us the entire deck needed to be replaced not just flipped and cleaned. This was an additional charge that we agreed to and he left to go find deck board (11:00am). Apparently he could not find the appropriate board he needed as he did not return until the next day, opting to drive to a Home Depot an hour away to obtain the material (14' vs 16' which was available locally). After the deck was pulled up we inspected the roof of the potting shed and talked over an approach to seal and clean. I had several concerns with the approach he wanted which included power washing with bleach as we did not want to ruin the contents of the potting shed beneath. He indicated things would be fine and proceeded to wash. As he washed the bleach water was seeping into the potting shed ruining the contents. We asked him to stop so we could move things to locations which would not get doused. After stopping for a few minutes he continued to wash as we were moving things...not offering to help. This caused a couple hundred dollars of damage to the contents of the shed including brand new plantings we were working to establish prior to putting in the ground. Larry ended up quickly sealing the deck, without testing for leaks. Larry assured us that the roof would not leak and plowed ahead installing the deck. At this point the deck looks good, but the shed roof still leaks around the edges, which was the whole reason we brought him out in the first place. In the end we cut a check to him and decided to cut our losses and move to another contractor to get what we wanted. Larry was not very professional, at one point telling me "I'm the expert...shut up and let me do my job" and not willing to help me understand what he was doing or listen to my concerns and needs. His work was good on the easy aspects of the job, but he did not seem to know what he was doing with the sealing of the roof...which should have made us stop right there. We would not use Larry again, or recommend him for other jobs. His work is good, but the attitude and professionalism needs to be improved.
Description of Work: Repair, replace, and clean bad deck boards, stairway, and seal roof of potting shed underneath deck.
