Ken arrived together with his partner Josh on schedule with a track-hoe and a skid-steer. Due to the nature of excavating and the soggy conditions, we had to make adjustments to our plan as we went. Ken was accommodating to my added requests and offered helpful suggestions to improve the outcome. The yard was too wet to complete the job on the project day. As it stands now, we are waiting for the land to dry a bit and I'll contact Ken later about returning to put on the finishing touches, and I'll probably throw a few added tasks his way.
Description of Work: Graded driveway including clearing out and replanting a clogged culvert pipe, graded yard, including adding a new drainage runoff, cleared scrub underbrush around perimeter of property, pulled up stumps.

The work went well and pretty much according to plan. We are very happy with Ken's work and will continue to use him. He has done other work on our farm moving boulders, fixing pipes and doing any sort of excavating work. He has been a reliable contractor that we continue to use over and over. We particularly appreciate that he is concerned with the entire job and will do all of the detail work that makes for a successful conclusion. He doesn't bid something and then say "That wasn't included". He is a small company working to make a name for himself and is thus very engaged in providing a quality service.
Description of Work: Ken performed work on the drainage and surfacing of a riding ring for our horses. The ring is approximately 100 x 180, and the original installation was not done properly so that water was pooling up in some areas and running off in a torrent in other areas. Ken studied the situation and let us know what changes had to be made. He cut new trenches and installed drainage pipe and gravel. He resurfaced the original ring, adding new screenings and making sure that the fabric underlayment was the correct type for proper drainage. He then helped install the electric fence around the ring and made it all look perfect. This was one year ago. Aside from a minor area at one entrance, the surface remains intact and functions perfectly. Even after a 2" thunderstorm, the ring was dry in hours.

We found Ken a while ago and had him do the work to open one uphill side of the barn so we could put in dutch doors for a stall. He has two machines, a small track hoe and a skid steer. He did the entire job in a weekend, including a beautiful retaining wall made of big rocks found on the site. He discovered and fixed the uphill drainage on the barn too. We have called him back several times to do more and bigger projects. The paddock preparation took longer and required larger equipment than he had, so he collaborated with someone who could loan him the equipment. Ken has continued to do a variety of projects including a 120 x 90 riding ring, on which he fixed the drainage, put down the screening rocks as a surface, and then installed the fence. He has recently worked on additional ditching and piping to ensure that the run off water is going into the drainage system. He is currently finishing pasture improvement that involved moving over 200 tons of rock and then raking and smoothing the area with his trackhoe. He has really shaped things up beautifully. When he works, we give him the general idea of what we want, and he takes it from there. He makes sure that things are as they should be, not just what you asked him to do. He is a hard-working and honest guy who will tell you the best way to do something, and then finish the work as promised. We tried to get the riding ring finished with someone else, but had to come back to Ken to fix the stuff those guys did wrong. I will continue to go back to Ken as often as I need to as I have complete trust in his abilities.
Description of Work: Ken has worked on the drainage and retaining walls for our horse farm, which is on the side of a ridge. He first opened up the side of the barn so we could build a door for the stalls. He also built a half-circle paddock with 30 foot radius that has a beautiful stone wall on the uphill side, has drainage underneath and is finished with screenings. He also then worked on a large riding ring, finishing the drainage and surface and installing the fence. Finally, he has moved many large rocks and dead or dangerous trees off the property and smoothed the land afterward into much nicer pastures. All of this has worked to integrate the pastures, paddock, barn and ring into a beautiful layout that is enjoyable to see and use.
