I could not recommend Skillin Tree Care more highly! The crew was highly professional, friendly, accommodating, and Ron, in particular, had a great smile and sense of humor, which made the experience delightful! They removed a very large fallen Maple and took down a smaller one, along with a stump grinding, with care and expert control of their complex machines! My husband and I really appreciated their crew’s willingness to cut up pieces of the maple tree into perfect firewood gratis, though we sent extra money to help this wonderful local company! We will be recommending Skillin to friends for sure! They also treated some shrubs that were in front of windows to slow their growth and still, their estimate for the package was quite reasonable. Would not consider using anyone else in the future!

The crew was professional and the site was left in good condition. I do however want to mention one bit of miscommunication. The job description we both agreed to mentioned "chip all small limbs." I have cut down dozens of trees on my land in the last 40 years and to me small limbs are those that are too small to serve as firewood in my stove. For me that usually is anything smaller than 4 inches in diameter. The limbs in the 4-12 inch range are the sweet spot - the size that I either don't have to split or usually one single split will do. Well, all those limbs were chipped, rather than saved for firewood. I suggested to Skilliin that they be clearer in advance with customers about what is saved and what is chipped. I came away less than pleased.

This company is the best. Mike and his entire crew are extremely professional. Brooke is awesome with scheduling and communication.Arrive promptly when they say they will for both quotes and service. Extremely safety conscious when cutting the trees and respectful of your property bringing big equipment in. Blow and pick up debris in your yard afterward that was not even due to their work. Leave the place looking better than when they start. Could not recommend anyone more than I do this company.

Lost a couple of trees during a recent storm. One was uprooted and leaning against the house. Skillin was recommended to me to do the removal. I had them bid, along with four other very reputable tree service companies. Skillin was the most professional in the bidding process and also the most affordable. Even with a 12 week work backup they showed up within a few days to do my job because of the danger and precarious nature of the leaning tree. The crew was courtious, professional, and extremely efficient. I would hire them again in a heartbeat... and would actually wait to have them do the job over another company even if it meant a delay in getting the work done.

I recently moved into the house. the pines were close dead and close to the house. Mr. Skillin came in February, and was not the cheapest, but, certainly the most professional. Skillin was great. they had great equipment, were professional, cleaned up after themselves, and were considerate to me and my family (and dog). Skillin has great equipment. He had to use an apple picker that connected to the truck and prevented them from climbing a really dangerous tree. They had a tractor with a scoop for cleanup, and a massive chipper that effectively chipped the whole mess in seconds. I would have only 2 complaints. One big, one small. the big one is the scheduling. Initially, i had said 'yes' to the bid, and didnt hear back, so, a month was lost in getting back on track. then, when I was told that it would be 2 weeks, and after 2 weeks, i had to write to get them in the next week. They are busy. The small one is that some of the falls off the tree broke a pipe in the septic system. that needed to be repaired. the cost for the parts to repair was taken off the bill, and i could do the job myself. no big deal. They were wonderfully professional, and a team. there were 3 guys, and they all knew where to be an how to work. very efficient! The whole job was only 2 hours from parking to clean-up.

The crew was prompt, hard working and considerate. They did the work planned, cleaned up after themselves, picked up the debris and completed the job earlier in the day than I expected.
Description of Work: I had four Loblolly pines removed that were crowding two oaks and causing them to start to lean and a sweet gum tree removed. I had two stumps ground down. In addition, I had the two large oaks trimmed and 9 seven foot emerald arbovitae trees along my property removed since they were damaged by deer and weather and were not healthy. Mike was professional, personable, and knowledgeable about the trees in my yard and what was and was not needed. I will definitely be calling him again when the oaks need to be trimmed in a few years.

Excellent and highly professional and efficient tree work. Skillin Tree Care arrived as scheduled and set up equipment, including chipper and a ditch witch fitted with claws to move limbs and logs. Mike expertly fell 3 tall poplars by climbing each tree and removing limbs and tops and then moving all wood debris to the chipper with special equipment before cutting off 8-10 foot sections from the top-down. The 8-10 foot logs were expertly placed close to the base. This approach and method requires significant expert tree climbing and chain sawing but resulted in minimal to no damage to nearby trees and bushes. Logs were stacked exactly as agreed for cutting firewood by the homeowner. All limbs and brush were chipped and exhausted directly into truck bed for removal. All of the work area was cleaned and any disturbed earth was repaired.
Description of Work: The Skillin Tree Care team cut down 3 approximately 120 feet tall yellow poplar trees, stacked logs for firewood, chipped and removed waste, and thoroughly cleaned and repaired the earth where the work was performed.

Description of Work: I contacted Skillin Tree Service because of a dead tree, leaning on the limb of another tree and threatening my house. Mike was able to promptly schedule a visit to look it over, and showed up in spite of ice. I asked his advice on a few other items, and he was very knowledgeable and honest about what was and was not needed. The work was performed as requested and even though I was not here, it was all done to order. I highly recommend Skillin Tree Service and will call them first at my next need.

Hi [member name removed], I would like to offer me apologies for completely over looking your request for services. I am an owner/operated company, while that has many perks for my customers it also, sometimes, leaves me a little short handed as we maintain a very full schedule. I am sure if we are given another opportunity in the future you would be very impressed with the overall quality of our work. Regards, Mike Skillin.

Arrived on time. Discussed placement if our vehicles and Skillin's vehicles. Joint oral review of projects.. Re-agreed on some previously discussed options. Began work. Later, between trees, notified me of small puncture holes in garage roof caused by previously fallen dead limbs NOT SOMETHING SKILLIN CAUSED. I had already notified roofer of possible problems from fallen dead limbs. Skillin finished work, informed us of stress and disease activity that caused the tree to die.. Cleaned up everything even tough I told Skillin that the yard service was coming tomorrow and would be raking and blowing the entire yard. This guy is good and stays booked way ahead so if you want his services, which I recommend, plan on as long as six weeks wait from when you get the estimate. Mike Skilling told us how long it would take for our appointment and his work date, today, was a couple of days short of what he estimated...and that was with frequent area rans. He phoned the week before for a heads up and a day and a half before to say it was a GO for today.

Mike's services were well thought out, on time, perfectly executed, and neighbors have already asked for his number. His services come with a very straight forward and engaged consultation, delivery-as-promised job and a more than reasonable price. He and his team showed passion and confidence in their work and were very friendly from the first handshake to the last goodbye. Truly, and without a doubt, Mike's a top-notch arborist who got the job done and is on my short list of companies to trust.
Description of Work: My wooded yard was in much need of shrub removal and tree maintenance. Approximately 20 very very overgrown shrubs (some as tall as the 2-story house) removed with stumps ground down, 4 trees removed and several trimmed up/dead limbs removed.

Description of Work: We had a HUGE dead oak tree in our yard. Mike came and took it down without having to bring a crane into our yard, which was suggested by all other people who gave us estimates. He said he was 100 feet up in that tree, the largest he had removed in Wake County. He got the job done, pruned a couple of other trees for us, removed all the wood and put down topsoil. He was very professional and very good at what he does. Will use him again if need be.

Description of Work: I've used Mike's company a couple of times, and have been consistently impressed at their professional attitude, their good value and their friendliness. On the first occasion, it was to take down around 4 trees in our (at that time) heavily wooded front yard. The second time (2 days ago) it was to take further trees down to basically open up the yard and make it much more sunny. Mike and his two guys felled the trees expertly and neatly, taking off the high limbs by climbing up, and then felling the bare trunk. They ground the stumps with a very heavy-duty stump grinder that's incredible to watch, and then smoothed the grade with a lighter-duty skid-steer. Mike was very obliging about what I wanted done with the wood: some I wanted to keep to mill into boards, some to chip and some to dispose of. The yard was left very neat and tidy. I have some further tree work to be done and wouldn't hesitate to call Mike. And it's a bonus that he's a fellow Brit.

After interviewing three other tree services I found and quot;Skillin's Tree Careand quot; here on Angie'l List. Mike was prompt in coming by for an estimate which was significantly lower than the others. He was able to appreciate that my job could be done without any heavy equipment and just a couple of (really good) guys. Because he was able to tailor his service to exactly fit my needs the price was good for both of us. He said that he'd be able to get to me within a few days and sure enough about three days later he and Josh arrived about 9 a.m. in a single vehicle and got to work. Mike is an expert tree climber and it was amazing to watch him work. Josh stayed on the ground as support and to remove the pieces as they were cut away. I noted that safety was of high priority in their work. Mike's equipment was first rate climbing gear in excellent condition. He and Josh would maintain close communication about everything that was going on and especially before Mike would drop anything to the ground. He was very careful to avoid any damage to the house and (as much as possible) any of the smaller plants and underbrush below. They worked non-stop for 2.5 hours, with Mike up in the trees the whole time, before breaking for lunch. After lunch it took another 2.5 ~ 3 hours before all the trees had been cut down. I really appreciated how Mike was careful in where he 'dropped' the main trunks so that they'd be left in a safe and organized fashion. Then Mike did some additional trimming and shaping of some other trees that weren't part of my original project, but made for a much nicer outcome. Josh cleaned up all the small branches and raked the fallen leaves, etc. out into the woods. By the time they'd finished everything looked really great. Mike said that he'd forgotten his leaf blower otherwise he'd have even blown off the decks and sidewalk of the remaining sawdust. All in all it was a really good experience and I highly recommend them!
Description of Work: Cut down 5 large trees that were leaning over the house. The average diameter of the trunks at the base was about 20 inches and I would estimate that they were over 75 feet tall. I didn't ask to have any of the downed tree material removed because we have a wooded lot and are fine with letting nature break it down over time.

Mike and Josh arrived on time; we took a quick walk around and went over everything that was needing to be done and they went right to work. Mike is a master at getting trees down correctly with minimal disruption to anything around it. I was amazed at the care he took and the way he made it look so easy. Josh and Mike cleaned up and I will tell you that they left my yard BETTER than when they began. Both Josh and Mike take a lot of pride in their work and it shows. I have recommended Mike to my boss; Mike has agreed to come back later this year and plant some replacement trees. I am sure I will not be disappointed.

Due to insurance concerns and just general overgrowth of my property I need some trees removed and trimmed. Mike returned my email in a prompt fashion, came to do an inspection then gave me the quote a day or so later. We scheduled the date for the start of work after agreeing to the quote. On the day of the work, he arrived around 8 in the morning with his crew and equipment. They promptly got to work removing the trees and trimming others. By the end of the day, all but one tree was down and the rest had been trimmed. I had two large piles of chips (that I wanted) and they loaded up the trunks. The next day they took away the trunks and took down the last tree then cleaned up. The process went very smoothly and I was quite impressed.
Description of Work: Mike removed 6 trees from around my property and trimmed back other trees that were overhanging my roof. It took him and his team two days to do the job. The trees were taken down in a safe fashion and in the case of the trimmed trees, they ascended the tree of ropes rather than using the boot spikes. They arrived on time each morning and left the site clean. I was very happy and impressed with their work. I would recommend him highly to anyone.

He climbed up all the larger trees and took them down by section. All logs were taken away and all areas were cleaned up where branches and twigs had fallen by mulching. The brush was cleaned and placed in a designated mulching pile. The trees were pruned. He took a huge pile of branches out of our low growing maples (about 25ft) and I couldn't tell it had been done. In other words the integrity of the trees was still excellent but all the useless branches were gone and they have grown excellently. The cherries and maples look excellent from the house and road. The river birches, willow, and another birch also were pruned and are lovely even a year later. He did little to no damage to the plant beds of the garden and lawn. He got rid of the wild raspberries that were trying to invade the lawn and lowered the brush level making the trees stand out a bit more. He consulted on what additional trees to remove to promote other trees. He loves trees and you can see it in the lack of damage to neighboring trees. He does not run up the bill. He charges the agreed upon price. He also showed me several things about keeping my trees healthy. This is actually the third time I have used him, and this time he told me that he thought everything was under control enough that he didn't think he would here from me for four or five years. How many would do that? His prices are great. His methods are great. He loves my trees. What else can I say?
Description of Work: I have 1.5 acres of which 1 acre is forest. Skillins removes trees and prunes trees throughout the property. He removed a 120 dead oak that was too close to the house along with other trees. He mulched the smaller branches which I used around the property and took away any wood that was too large to mulch. Much of the removal was in among other trees I did not want damaged. Also the lawn and garden areas had to be damaged minimally. We also have decorative trees like cherry and maples that had to be pruned and shaped. He also cleaned out low lying brush from trees and consulted with me on what trees to take down and what trees to keep.

It was awesome -- it would have been a much bigger pain to have had to deal with the pole myself if the crane company had just left it there. His cost was the same as the only other quotes I had been given, but it included removal, which the others did not. I think Mike's price was extremely fair, especially when faced with my other options. I'm guessing a reasonable portion of it had to go towards the disposal fee.
Description of Work: I had an old pole in my backyard, similar to a utility pole, but apparently put in place by the original owners of the property (50 years earlier!) to hold a short-wave radio antenna. At some point the base of it rotted beneath ground level, and fell into the neighbor's very large oak tree. It was essentially being held upright by the tree's branches. When this happened, I was desperate to find someone who could remove it quickly, before it fell and injured someone or caused any damage. I called a number of tree removal companies, none of whom were willing to deal with poles (to complicate matters, it had an iron track running up the full length of it; presumably to guide the antenna up and down). I finally found a tree company who told me they could put a huge crane in front of my property, stretch it over the house, lift the pole up into the air, and put it back down on my property, intact. And leave it there. For $1000. To compare, I contacted a crane company (construction, not trees) who gave me a very similar bid to do the work, and also gave me Mike's name and number. I contacted him, and within about 10 days, the pole was gone (no crane needed). He accomplished the task by climbing the neighbor's tree and anchoring the top of the pole in its branches with a complicated pulley system, while his colleague cut 2-3 foot sections off the bottom of the pole. At each cut, Mike controlled the pole to keep it upright as it became shorter and shorter. After they got it down, they hauled away all the pieces (including the metal). The whole thing lasted about two hours.

It went well. Mike came to our home, spent about 1/2 hour on walk-around estimate of work needed, then sent an email that evening with a cost estimate. On the day of the job (about a week after his visit), he sent 2 co-workers to begin the job, then arrived himself (after dropping a child off at school). The sizable job was finished within a few hours, all wood and leaves were cleaned up and hauled away, and our yard was left looking like no one had been there. The crew even cut up and hauled away an old tree trunk lying at our back fence that had not been included in the original estimate (at no additional charge).
Description of Work: (1) Prune 1 Pecan and 1 Maple to allow better light and air circulation through the back yard. Clean-out the area along the back fence. Prune 1 large dogwood to remove all dead, diseased and broken branches. (2) Remove the large Mulberry to the rear of the garage. (3) Formative-prune 2 Maple and 2 Cherry at the front of the home.
