Our experience with Paul from Leisure Landscapes was positive from the start. He created not only the most detailed quote we had seen from any of the contractors we interviewed, but he also created some drawings that projected what the project would look like when finished. The quoted price was typical compared to what we received from the other contractors. As the start date for the project approached, Paul let us know that they would be delayed. Ultimately, they were delayed by about 3 weeks. From that new start date, it then took about twice as long as expected to complete the project. During the work, I reviewed progress daily. Every time I had a concern about a portion of the work, I emailed or texted Paul, and he was always quick with a reply. When some matters required that I be on site, Paul or his foreman was always able to meet me there to work with me on an answer. There were a few instances when I had to ask them to re-do some work; for example, when they did not align the pavers in the walkway the way I had intended. To their credit, they always re-did the work for me without complaint and adhered to the guidelines I gave them. So, while I wish these things had been done right the first time, I was very pleased to get them done right the second time. Despite the delays in completing the project, we finished it on budget except for the addition of a few more yards of mulch. We are very happy with the work and the materials used, and we love spending time in our newly renovated back yard!
Description of Work: We contracted Leisure Landscapes to demo existing walkways and patio areas, re-grade our back yard, build a new retaining wall, and build new walkways, steps, and a patio.

The general clean up was done in february and went well; they did a reasonably good job there, but after that it was all down hill and spiraled so. I was required to pay a month in advance of the service. In april they did not mow biweekly; it was almost 3 weeks before they returned, and the grass/weeds were so high you couldn't see my 50 lb dog lying down in the grass! They returned the first week of may for mowing, and then were not seen again for just about 3 weeks, at which time the grass was again significantly noticeably high; so much so that I got a nasty letter from my HOA, suggesting I "consult with a professional landscaping company". I promptly sent them a copy of my contract so that they could see with whom I had consulted, and the services that I was paying for. Their initial second mowing for may was actually one single pass up and back the width of the lawnmower in a single strip down the side of my property line and that was it! So it looked ridiculous for over a week until they returned on the 30th to complete the mow after several phone calls and emails from me. They did no pruning weeding or other care for all of april or may, until their last day of service with me on 5/30, at which time they almost left without completing except I was home and made sure they did the work that was contracted for. They also kept trying to pressure me to pay for the mulch, before they did the weeding or gave me any of the info I was looking for on plantings. I'm not a professional landscaper but I am reasonably certain that it makes no sense to lay down mulch BEFORE you weed and plant. They were given a detailed list of desired plantings, as well as a blueprint plan that I have previously paid for regarding how I would like the property to look over time. I made it clear that I am on a budget so would need/want to do plantings in increments. I have pics I would like to share because I believe one should have information/facts to back up such strong statements. When I posted a sign on my front lawn that said "this property is maintained by Leisure Landscaping" (in the poor state they maintained it) , 2 neighbors in my subdivision came by to tell me that they had used this company briefly in the past, but cancelled due to very bad/terrible service as well. The person (Rhonda) in the office seems very nice and attempts to be responsive; it is the owner Paul who makes one believe that the name "Leisure" in Leisure Landscaping is for the benefit of the company, not the client.
Description of Work: quoted a price for a cleanup, and then regular monthly service contract to include: biweekly mowing; weeding, pruning, blowing, edging, spraying, and rose care as needed. Separate price quoted for mulch delivery and application; attempted to get prices and schedule for combination of annual and perennial plantings, including small aromatic bushes (gardenia, lavender, etc).;

Response from Leisure Landscapes Inc
Thank you for taking the time to share your views on our service. We are always eager to listen to comments whether they are compliments or complaints. We are happy that [member name removed] had such positive thoughts about our initial services and while we strongly disagree with some of her assertions about later efforts we appreciate her feedback. Our company would like to take responsibility for the days missed in April. We did miss or rearrange our maintenance for some of those days. Landscaping is highly dependent upon the weather to maintain a tight schedule. Unfortunately, sometimes the weather is not cooperative. When it rains it slows our crews down or stops them entirely. This is part of what happened in April and May. We also had some issues with equipment which caused delays. We apologize for any inconvenience anyone may have experienced during these times. We feel in this instance there was a misunderstanding concerning the scope and nature of our contract. Our company strives to provide a quality product at a fair price. We are a proud small business that provides jobs to a small cadre of hardworking individuals. Our pricing is competitive, and our service is a value as made apparent by our 20 years as a business leader in the Triangle area of North Carolina. We make certain recommendations when we agree to service a property. When the recommendations are discarded the final results become progressively more unreliable. Our very strong recommendation in this case was to begin the soil building process and to give the whole property a more finished appearance with the application of hardwood mulch. Mulch is also very beneficial for the suppression of weeds. We repeatedly suggested that the best way to get ahead of the weeds would be to apply mulch before we proceeded with some of the plant installations. The client had not applied mulch in several years and was resistant to our suggestions of better quality product in larger quantities. She attempted to modify the estimate we sent by letting us know that she could get cheaper mulch from the city. She tried adding her neighbor’s mulch to hers to get a discount. We are not a retail company and do not provide discounts for buying in bulk. This was explained to our client numerous times but she insisted that we should give her a discount. Because she was on a budget we made many attempts to modify her payment. As with all of our services, we offer mulch at the rate of 50% payment when ordered with the balance due upon completion of the job. While our client was insistent that we discount her order, she refused to pay the 50% advance payment. We tried to accommodate her budget and against our broader policy allowed her to add the mulch payment to her monthly maintenance. This was not part of the initial contract but done in our effort to work with this client. It is true that she provided a list of plants that she wanted to be installed but the beds and spaces for new beds were not adequately fertile for the plants she requested. There was also the problem of the plants themselves. Many of the plants would have done quite well in our North Carolina fall or winter but were completely inappropriate for spring or early summer here. Likewise, there was a desire for planting fruit and berry trees and bushes with the expectation that there would be fruit by this spring. We did not begin work on her property until February, a month when we routinely expect to see our fruit trees in bloom here. To expect such prolific growth on poor unimproved soil was completely unrealistic. Even in the best improved gardens one cannot expect to eat strawberries during the first season. As with the mulch, the client was unwilling to pay for any plantings but rather kept insisting we install plants we felt were wrong for her property. Our maintenance schedule clearly marks the times we set aside for pruning and we feel that we adhered to this schedule. Some of the pruning she desired was requested for the wrong time of the year or was inappropriate for the plant species. Much of the pruning would have been done in the next few months had [member name removed] remained our client. Some of the weeding requests would have been unnecessary had the mulching advice been followed. Lastly, we would like to agree with [member name removed]. Rhonda has worked hard to communicate with our entire client base and is truly an asset to our company. We like her too.

The whole project turned out beautifully and looked just as we had hoped. Paul Martin, the owner, was courteous and charming when he came to gather info for the estimate, which came back promptly. The negotiations over price were very professional and courteous. Paul was very knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions for design and materials, all of which we turned out to be very good advice. He came by several times to check on the progress of the project. The two men who did the actual work were very hard working and always showed up as they promised. They worked cheerfully in spite of the terrible heat, and worked as long as they needed to be sure the project finished in a timely way. They seemed to be of fine character, very dependable, with an extraordinary work ethic. I would use Leisure Landscaping again without hesitation.

Though friendly, I found the services to be sorely lacking. After going back and forth with the company for most of this year, I have terminated our contract. The quality of work was not to my expectations. The irrigation system is still not working properly. Pipes installed to aid with drainage were not the proper pipes and were not buried deep enough. In addition, nothing was done to cover the area dug and old pipes were not removed.
Description of Work: Contracted with Leisure Landscapes to provide monthly lawn servicing to include irrigation and fix drainage problems. Some landscape design and planting.

Response from Leisure Landscapes Inc
Leisure Landscapes did not install the irrigation system that [member name removed] refers to; we were called upon to get it operational. Here's what we found. The irrigation system was a nightmare. What had clearly started as a conventional underground system of rotors and sprayers was now a mismatch of tubing and microsprayers it had been partially converted over to a drip system, probably during the drought and resulting water restrictions of 2007. At that time the only permitted watering was by hand or low gallonage drip systems. At the time of our service, the watering prognosis was stilling unclear. Cary was under phase I mandatory conservation which allows watering only on certain days of the week. Any return to drought conditions would be followed. by a near-automatic return to a ban on automatic irrigation use (except for drip). It was decided that the most prudent course was to repair the existing "hybrid" system and keep the drip. Now let me say at this point for our design of new systems we rarely incorporate drip into general watering applications. The sole application we have found it to be appropriate are container plants on decks or hanging baskets Where others would use it for shrub beds, we do not, preferring to let the lawn large-scale rotors do double duty of irrigating beds and lawn. We have found this to be the most efficient and reliable. Our customers apparently agree: we have had no cl- backs for this design strategy. The problem with drip systems are they are fragile and prone to failure. The are constructed of lightweight plastics and are installed above ground. Because they are surface systems, They are exposed to UV sunlight and become brittle and break under foot traffic from shrub pruning or bed mulching. They are often attacked by dogs and chewed up, probably due to the hissing noise they emit as air escapes from the drip holes as the system pressurizes with water. And they can't take the pressure; they must be preceded by pressure reducers (a step often skipped in retrofits) or the lines will blow out emiitters. So why is drip encouraged and used? It has a viable application where point-source watering is desired (pots) and underground installation is not possible (decks) It is encouraged by conservationists because it uses much less water. Emitters drip out small amounts of water--1-2 gallons PER HOUR versus 1-2 gallons PER MINUTE for traditional heads. It is used and promoted by installers in shrub beds because the materials are inexpensive and it can be quickly installed. So it's use is highly profitable while having the caché of being ecologically responsible. These facts were explained to [member name removed] in an email dated July 21. 2011. [member name removed], I apologize; I was unaware of your phone call with Paulina. I was out of the office until 9PM Tuesday on sales calls and Paulina was not in the office yesterday, taking care of getting her daughter to the doctor. So we did not have an effective hand off of communications. I assure you that I wish to retain you as a satisfied customer. There are several issues that you point out that need our attention. I will summarize them with the necessary course of action:● irrigation - at the time that repairs were completed, all systems were operating. However, your irrigation system is somewhat of a cluge of a conventional underground system and low-volume drip components. It appears to me that portions of your system were converted to drip to allow for shrub watering when we were in drought conditions and 'drip' systems were the only ones permitted to be used by the Town of Cary. While these components will frugally administer water, they are fragile, prone to failure and have a short operational life. Your options are to: ○ replace these drip components with new (expect a 2-3 year life) ○ remove them ○ replace them with conventional hard PVC piping and new low-volume nozzles (15-20 year life) DRAINAGE [member name removed] asked Leisure Landscapes to fix a drainage problem where rainwater from a gutter downspout and AC condensate was pooling on a concrete pad facing a basement sliding door. This was a repair that had been undertaken by her father (visiting for a week) but was not completed to her satisfaction. In addition, she wanted the drain line, which daylighted at the beginning of a wooded natural area, to be extended through the natural area to drain off her property. I explained that while we could easily solve the problem of the standing water on the pad, I could not advise extending the drainage line through the woods. Doing so had philosophical issues for me: 1. Best management practices (BMP) for water runoff recommend containing the water on site where the solution is located as close as possible to the problem source. Here the problem source is an impervious roof which has displaced woodlands that can allow runoff to percolate and be filtered as it returns to groundwater. Her drainage situation definitely was suitable to this approach. Gutter run-off would be allowed to soak into the wooded area where it could be available for uptake by the remaining trees and was over a large enough area to percolate into groundwater. 2. BMP says it is better to let water dissipate over a large area instead of being focused to one point where the speed and volume of flow are concentrated causing erosion of topsoil. By running the line through the woods, [member name removed]s solution would miss the opportunity to dissipate water over this area and would cause an erosion problem off her property. 3. The process of installing the drainage line would potentially cut tree roots and undermine the trees. Despite these reservations, I wrote to [member name removed] in the same July 21, 2011 email that ● drainage - I failed to insist with the installer your desire to run the drain pipe to the end of the fence. I was persuaded that that would not be necessary since the end emitted among the trees and their root systems would absorb any and all water emitted from the pipe. I will have them extend the end to the fence as you wish and the drain pipe in the front. The work site will be cleaned up as appropriate. [member name removed]’s response to this letter was to terminate our landscape maintenance service, a separate contact, effective 8/20/2011. She did not pay her final invoices for her maintenance service of $141 and $208.35 for the drainage and irrigation repairs.

Planning to redesign our front yard, we started researching available contractors. Leisure Landscapes seemed promising until I looked into our archives of estimates. When we moved into this house about 3 years ago, we contracted for lawn maintenance. Leisure Landscapes was one of the first to come by to give an estimate. My wife still remembers Paul Martin, who walked right into the house through the open garage door, past her, without so much as an introduction or a knock on the door. He crafted a well detailed estimate, with a very useful schedule of services including an actual drawing of the property (with suggestions for improvement). It was pricey so I asked which items were negotiable: essentially none. We settled on a more cordial and far, far less expensive. Our lawn doesn't look great but our wallet sure is green, and that's what matters most for us.
