The most important thing to note before I start is that there are many different branches of this company with different management and cleaning teams. This review is for the Cary/Apex team. I can only assume the sterling five-star reviews are for the other areas because our experience has been so much different. My wife and I have been using Carpe Diem for about six months now. Initially they were pretty good and our biggest complaint was that the cleaning team would not replace items they cleaned in the same location once they were done, so we'd have to run around the house every other week to move pictures, electronics, kitchen equipment, etc. back to their original positions. Over the last two or three months, however, there have been several management changes and just terrible service. The best way I can describe it is that the cleaning teams have no respect for the house. To summarize some of my issues: they have chipped the wood on my banister, gouged my hardwood floors, dented and marked up my walls, clogged a toilet with cleaning supplies, missed entire rooms, discolored a wooden bench with bleach cleaner, and damaged my coffee machine (and they still don't put things back the way they were). Most of this is due to slamming equipment around (particularly this shop-vac they use) and generally trying to get the job done as fast as possible. At the same time, they spend a good amount of time texting and talking on their cell phones. I work from home and see this activity but have been told not to try to communicate with the teams directly and to only discuss issues with management, which is incredibly frustrating, particularly when the management changes ever couple of weeks. For those rooms that they do clean, they do an alright job, but there is still plenty of dust on ledges and corners -- not a very detail oriented operation. As I said at the start, this is just my experience with the Cary/Apex team, but I have a hard time believing all of these glowing reviews given how different my experience has been.

We are very sorry that your experience with Carpe Diem was not fully satisfactory! What you've described is by no means a typical experience for our clients. We did undergo some recent changes to our Cary Branch which may have compounded any issues with communication about your home and your concerns to upper management. Both the Manager and the crew member who were responsible for the issues in your home have since been let go. Currently we do have solid management in place with the Cary Branch, and are confident that we can continue delivering the high quality service and communication that has put us on the map. We are very sorry that we were not able to resolve your concerns to your full satisfaction and want to extend our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

I have been using Carpe Diem for about a year. I use them just once a month to come in and vacuum, dust, wipe down surfaces, etc...just maintain the house in a way that I could not do without spending an entire weekend of cleaning. I work from home so they show up and I let them in and they go about doing their work. I am satisfied with the quality of work and the team that they send. The team is made up of some very nice women who are polite and efficient in their work. Price is reasonable -I have had cleaning services in the past that were a bit cheaper but the quality was very poor. I also appreciate that their management office is easily accessible by email and responsive. I appreciate the reminder emails they send a few days prior to the appointment. A few times I have had to change my cleaning day or time due to personal scheduling conflicts and they have always been very accommodating. If you are looking for a reliable cleaning service in the Triangle - I would recommend!

Carpe Diem made bleach spots on my carpet and is refusing to pay for replacement. The first issue occurred 3 years ago. We had just a few weeks earlier had all of the carpet throughout my house replaced to the tune of 6k when, after a regular cleaning, we noticed a bleach spot on the carpet directly in front of our master bath. Carpe Deim decided that the only thing that they could do was to put a patch in that area which I was not happy about considering we had just had the carpet installed. But we let it go. 3 years go by. After returning from vacation we noticed that there were bleach spots on the carpet on our stairs in the entryway of our home. 2 different ones and 2 different steps. One was 1 inch x 2 inch and the other was 1 inch in diameter. We had a cleaning occur while we were gone and these are the only people that were in our home while we were gone. When we contacted them they indicated that the team had noticed some stains on the carpet however, they never told us about them before we called. They came out to try and clean it because they thought it was a stain however, that didn't work and this carpet professional mentioned that it was a bleach spot and that he has seen this very thing in several other homes that Carpe Diem has cleaned. They then sent the QA person for Carpe Diem out to examine the problem. I was currently on a teleconference and could not stay with her. I showed her the spots and went back to my office to finish my call. After I was off the phone I came back to her and she said she was able to 'clean' the spots. Bewildered and astonished I asked what she used. She vaguely said she used some "professional cleaning products". It was at this point that I noticed a black bag with spray bottles in it. I again asked what exactly she used. She pulled a piece of paper from the bag careful not to open the bag and said they got some products from bleachstain.com. I said that I'd like to wait until it dries and then let them know how it looks. I then checked the website. Without my authorization Carpe Diem came into my home and in an attempt to "fix" the bleach spots, tried to stain the carpet back to its original color. The original bleach spots were purple. I now have 2 yellow stains on my beige carpet. They then offered to re-carpet the stairs. However, a carpet that matched both style and color could not be found by their vendor. They agreed verbally to replace the carpet in my whole home as it's only 3 years old and I don't want mis-matched carpet in my home. I got several estimates for this. The first one came in at 10k and I let them know this. I also told them that I'd be getting additional estimates. The other estimates ranged from 6500 to 8k. The President of the company called me yesterday to discuss what the options were. She asked if we'd consider pulling carpet from our closets, using that to carpet the stairs and then either put carpet or wood in the closets. I said no. She also asked if we'd consider pulling the carpet from our study, using that on the stairs, and then putting woodfloors in the study. I told her that I'd speak to my wife and I'd let her know. Moments after that call she sent me an email stating that they would no longer be cleaning our home. I then received an email from her indicating that she had spoken to her insurance company and advisory board and that they all agreed that a fair and equitable solution was $750 toward carpet replacement. The carpet in my home when purchased 3 years ago was intended to match throughout my home. I spent roughly 6k dollars at that time to have my home carpeted. As Carpe Diem's carpet vendor could not find a carpet that matched to replace our carpet on the stairs then they should replace the carpet in my home in order to set things back to how they were prior to the bleach spots. That is, matching throughout my home. I believe that Carpe Diem at a minimum owes me 6k dollars for the replacement of the carpet in my home. In the end, I received several emails from the President of the company even after I got the estimate for wood floors which she asked for yet were only willing to give us $750 toward carpet replacement. During the course of my conversations with the President she indicated that they have had several of these same issues in other homes. Beware! Not only did Carpe Diem bleach our carpet on 2 different occassions. They refused to pay for the cost of replacement making the homeowner bear the cost of Carpe Diem's error.

Response from CARPE DIEM CLEANING
During a cleaning of this former client’s home, there was an accidental bleach spill on their stairway which resulted in a stain sized 2” by 1” and another sized 1” in diameter. The spill was unintentional, but as a conscientious business it is our responsibility to find a solution which would restore the stairs back to their original condition, pre-accident. The first option that we considered was to neutralize the stains and dye them back to the correct color. One of our staff accomplished this at the time of the client’s cleaning appointment. Due to a miscommunication, the client was not properly informed that one of our staff members would be dying the stain. Once we showed the client the results of dying the stain their initial feedback was very positive, however they contacted us again after the cleaning indicating that they were no longer happy with this solution. We gave the client this cleaning for free since they were not happy with our solution, and decided to pursue the next logical option of having the stairs patched. At no point did Carpe Diem agree (either verbally or in writing) to replace the entirety of the carpet in the client’s home. Instead we indicated that we would need to explore what other options were available in order to find an equitable solution. We arranged for a representative from Sherwin Williams to visit their home in order to do an estimate on the cost of patching or replacing the carpet on their stairs. This representative also brought carpet samples for our former client to look through in order to decide on a match. Although the representative had access to thousands of carpet samples, the client was not happy with any that they were presented with. After the appointment, the representative called our office to discuss options. The rep suggested a good option would be to use the carpet from the client’s music room to re-carpet the stairs, and we could then install new carpet in the music room without there being a mis-match issue since the music room was not adjacent to any other carpeted areas. The contractor that we work with on flooring projects gave us a quote of $600 to take on this project. We also ran this option by our advisory board and they agreed that it would be an equitable option. We presented this option to our former client with this proposal and offered to send them a check for $750 if they wanted to use their own vendor for the job rather than ours. The client insisted that we should replace all of the carpet in their home (~$10,000) or replace the carpet on their stairs with wood treads ($2,275). We declined to perform either of these services as we believe that they far exceed what our responsibilities are for resolving this situation. The client began to threaten us with a smear campaign in an attempt to persuade us to agree to their demands. They notified us that they had filed a claim with BBB and would be posting negative reviews on Angie’s list and other social media venues, and would send a negative message to their HOA list serve urging people to switch from our service to our competitors. We responded that their attempts to bully us through social media would not cause us to agree to their demands and we continued to offer the solution of $750 for the re-carpeting of their stairs and music room as we had previously offered. We received a phone call from the client on October 7th indicating that they would accept our offer of $750 and that that would be the end of the disagreement and they would not post negative reviews on social media after all. The check we sent to them cleared on October 15th, and unfortunately on October 16th the client posted a negative review of Carpe Diem on Angie’s List – contrary to what they had said they would do. We are sad that this situation has progressed the way it has; we work very hard to ensure that our clients are happy and that any issues are resolved satisfactorily for all parties. This situation has been unusual to say the least; we have not had an experience like this with a client before.

They were great for about a year, but then they changed my team. The new team never came at the same time, got smaller, and then started to get careless about where they put things back. They even put ant poison in the dish strainer with my baby bottles. Another example of their carelessness is that there was a cobweb in the kitchen that they missed on several visits, and it was not cleaned until I pointed it out.

Carpe Diem came highly recommended by three of my friends, all of whom I respect and whose homes are clean and well-kept. We asked the company to come in and set up a one-time deep clean as we were about to put our house on the market. We really wanted attention paid to the baseboards (which were admittedly in sad shape as I told them prior to them coming out) and the windowsill tracks, as well as general cleaning (kitchen, bathrooms, dusting, floors, etc.) It was easy to set up a time for the crew to come over and we received prompt replies to initial emails. The crew arrived at our house and had not received communication from the main branch as to where to find our keys - the company called me at work and fortunately I was able to tell them once again where to find the key. I arrived home that evening and found clean bathrooms and kitchens, but the following issues: 1. A plug-in air freshener was left upside-down on our wood end table and the liquid all spilled out, stripping the stain and ruining the finish. 2. A picture frame was broken, having fallen down off the wall and scratched the wall and snapped the frame in the process. 3. There was still visible dust on many surfaces. 4. Baseboards in most rooms still showed all the dust and dirt they had before. 5. The floor of the smallest bathroom had not even been touched. We had not received any communication from the team or the company regarding the broken frame or overturned air freshener, so I emailed the company that evening. I received a reply the next day apologizing for the errors and offering either a different team coming out to do a complementary "re-clean" with a 50% discount on the original cleaning or the cost to repair the damaged items and a 20% discount off the bill. I was impressed with a lot of the work they had done and respected the managers for responding so agreed to have a second team come out the next week to touch up the missed areas. I returned home after the second cleaning and found: 1. Downstairs window left wide open on the ground floor, in the summer, with the AC running. 2. ANOTHER overturned air freshener on a different end table. 3. Baseboards still exactly the same and untouched. 4. Powder room floor still untouched. They had clearly vacuumed and dusted, and once again bathrooms and kitchen looked nice. I again emailed the office with my frustrations and - no response. At all. I took a wet Swiffer to the powder room floor and after ten minutes and three Swiffers, the floor was about four shades lighter. (We had repainted the entire house a week before so there was sanding dust that had settled downstairs, especially onto that floor.) I respect the company's initial response and remedy, however the second cleaning was sub-par and the lack of response to the second email really rubbed me the wrong way. We will look elsewhere for cleaning services in our new home.
Description of Work: We asked Carpe Diem to come in and do a one-time "deep clean" on our house prior to putting it on the market. We specifically asked for attention to the baseboards and also cleaning the interior window tracks, in addition to the standard in-depth home cleaning.
