They were able to come out shortly after I called to do a diagnostic on my dishwasher, they waived the diagnostic fee when I decided to get toilets installed, all work was done in the next day or two. They were very professional and so far everything they did has worked like a charm.

I have had a annual service contract since about 1993. The quality of the technicians is great. Over time the technicians have been turned into sales people and the last 2 years it have been annoying. The technicians seem to try to sell service or a product that just does make sense. I had a couple of warranty repairs the last 2 years and the cost was excesive. I had to escalate to management to get the charge reduced to an acceptable level. Even though I got the issues resolved I do not feel I can count on this company to service me in the way I expect. I just do not like to deal with companies that are not customer focused. I have a high regard for the technicians. I have come to dislike the company policies and I do not want to take it any more. I have begun the process of contacting and interviewing other companies from Angie's list to support my Heating and Air requirements. No service company is perfect but this company's history is less than 50%. I do not see it getting better. I will no longer engage them for any work.

I had a good experience. They were prompt today and one of the things I love about ARS is that all of their repair people, when they come into the house, will cover their shoes so they are never tracking things in and scratching the hardwood floors. They are professional and have been straight forward and real clear with me so I feel comfortable with them. One of the things I also really like about them is they will always call you before they come, which is something I appreciate.
Description of Work: My AC wasn't working when I came home last night from an out of town trip. I called them first thing this morning and someone was out within an hour. It turned out to be a fuse which I would of never found. I also have a service contract with them; they come in the fall to service my heat and in the spring to service the AC.

They did great work and I was well pleased with them. I would call them again if I need to.
Description of Work: I had a clogged sink. Another plumbing company that I had used worked on the sink for hours and couldn't get it unclogged. They then told me that they would have to dig up the concrete and even use a camera to go through the pipeline to get it unclogged. They then said it would cost a couple thousand dollars. I then contacted ARS and they came right in and brought some sort of pressure pump to unclog it. It took them about 15 minutes and only cost me $175.

We called ARS and they scheduled service for the afternoon of the following day. The plumber, Nestor, called 45 minutes before the scheduled time to say he was able to and arrive on time. Before providing an estimate he checked a variety of aspects of the plumbing beyond just the kitchen drain to determine various options of accessing the drain to clear it. He provided an estimate based on the most reasonable approach to clearing the drain and for the additional repairs we agreed were necessary. While my first reaction was that the work was expensive, by the time he finished I was so impressed with his expertise, efficiency and the overall quality of the work I was convinced I it was good deal and it was well worth it. The bill he submitted was the same as the estimate.Nestor said he had 30 years experience, and after watching him do the work, I believe it. It was apparent that not only did he have extensive experience he also excellent judgment. I will definitely call ARS again for my plumbing needs.
Description of Work: The main purpose of the service was to clean a kitchen drain, but I also suspected there would be additional repairs necessary after the pipe was cleared. This additional work included replacing the sink drains, traps, connection to the dishwasher drain, and addition tees and connections. Some of the old plumbing was so rusted and/or corroded so badly that it had to be cut out. I had previously done temporary fixes for various leaks so no of this came as a surprise to me.

The whole installation process- overseen by I believe Justin and Alex was superb. My 83 year old mother who lives with me acted as on site contractor LOL- and was treated with such respect that I was totally amazed. She can ask a lot of questions and they patiently answered them all. Christopher ( the salesman) told me that we would be without air for a day- and he kept to his word even though it was going to take longer than the original 2 days to install that had been planned. It was extremely hot for the installers but they kept on task and worked tirelessly throughout the experience. They cleaned up everything and left us in much better shape than when they came. My mom and I both knew this was not going to be an easy experince but they truly did everything in their power to make sure we were comfortable. At one time there were 5 trucks in our front yard with men hustling about to get all finished for us. Each step was carefully explained as to what the next step and its sounds-smells- and vibrations so as to not worry her. I have never been so impressed with such service. I know that we paid top dollar for this unit and I could have gotten the exact units somewhat cheaper but the service has so far made up for the hesitancy I first had. Christopher ( our salesman) was totally professional and extremely knowledgeable and because of his careful explanations - I felt that this was an honorable and reputable company. ( to be fair-as a foot note- I do not know positively that I could have gotten the units cheaper as ARS would not break down the units by individual cost- but looking at totals and estimates from others- it appeared so)When Alex came back to inspect, he took the time with mom to carefully explain why the AC was running so long at night- humidity- and how the thermostat worked and waylaid any fears that mother and I still had.I want to thank Christopher and Justin especially for their kindness & professionalism.
Description of Work: ARS- through Home Depot- removed my old HVAC unit and all the ductwork. They moved the new unit under the house and replaced all the ductwork and the outside unit on to a new pad. Installed new Thermostat and CO2 detector.

Thank you for your kind words. I am very happy that we were able to provide the service that you and your family deserve. I wanted to clarify our policy concerning flat rate pricing of installations. We do this for 2 primary reasons both focused around the customer. We feel that each homeowner investment should reflect an amount that is based upon a time and material level expected by a senior technician. We guarantee that there are never any surprises with our price. So if a job uses more materials or requires extra manpower, your price does not change. The second reason has to do with saving the customer money. In NC, sales tax is not charged on services but is charged on materials. The standard method and the most cost effective for the homeowner is to have the company (ARS) pay the sales tax on the materials when they are purchased rather then when are sold. This way we do not have to track each small screw, etc to charge tax on the invoice separate from labor, permits, etc. It also saves you money since if we buy an item for (as an example) $100 and sell it for $120, we only pay tax on the $100 amount. When you multiply this by thousands of dollars, this can represent a significant saving for the homeowner. The state of NC prefers this since it simplifies accounting. Again thank you for your support.

The heating technician said we had to replace the whole system, the cage holding the motor was bad and he would probably break it if he had to open it to test the motor, several thousand dollars to replace system. Had a handy man working there with experienced heating and cooling and he took a look at it and replaced the heater motor for $125. Works fine. Also they sent someone over to look at hot water heater. Said I needed a new one and the cost was $2,500.00. I priced them at Lowes for $277 and a plumber for $90 an hour to install. I would never use or recommend these guys, they are gouging folks.

This est was done to an investement property (not the above address)on March 9, 2012. The technician discovered the unit badly rusted and recommended replacement of the system due to condition. The most critical factor is that the unit could not be properly serviced without the removal of sheets of plywood which is a code violation. The investor indicates that she had a handyman replace the motor for a cost of $125. ARS as a licensed contractor for NC with $5 million in insurance is bound to follow the laws and codes of the state. We could not legally perform the same repair as the handyman for legal issues. ARS only charged her $99 for the diagnostic and trip charge. However she later visited our office in Durham and expressed her negative feelings that we did not do the repair and that someone else performed the work that we refused to perform for only $125. Our General Manager of Durham explained our requirement to follow the codes and refunded the full amount of $99 to her. She said she was very satisfied with the outcome and how we handled everything since all of her money was refunded. In addition, she mentions that we quoted $2500 for a water heater. We do not have a record of this quote but feel there is a misuderstanding of the product. All of our replacements are posted in a price book by the company and the tecnician can only read from the flat rate up front prices. A standard water heater is is less than 1/2 the price she listed so this quote would have been either for a specialized unit or something requiring major changes to the home. Except for tankless, none of our water heaters would ever be that expensive. We are sorry that we have an unhappy customer but we were not aware of the situation. When we last spoke and refunded all of her money, we all thought she was happy. Again I hope everyone understands that HVAC is a licensed trade and must follow the rules and laws of the state and local jurisdictions. We have no option. Handyman is not a licensed trade and is very limitted to their scope of work. I wish her well with this investment property. thank you

Technician was very professional and worked to actually save us money. He was the kind of guy who seemed to feel bad about having to tell me that things were wrong with the system. Biggest complaint is the price of one of the parts. $200 seemed outrageous for an electricalcontact bus. But that's where they really make their profit. I could probably have bought it online for $20, but I wouldn't want to install something like that.
Description of Work: We have 2 air conditioners. One of them was blowing hot air. Technician came out and discovered 2 problems. We had a bad control unit which he replaced and the compressor started working again. But then he discovered that the refrigerant pressure was low due to a leak. He recharged the system with expensive RF-22 (it's a 12 yr old system). Then I had him do a $89 service check of the other system and he found two failing electrical parts. Which he replaced. Repairs to both units hit $974.

We will be going out at no charge with a supervisor to review her home. However the facts are confusing. Please note this report was just made but we did the work in 2008! ARS in 2004 installed a new outdoor unit. This unit did not operate properly and was replaced under warranty in 2005. In 2008, the inside part of the system (the air handler) was replaced. We show no records of any maintenance being done on the equipment since each piece was installed. The manufacturer recommends servicing the unit yearly and the outdoor unit has been 7 years. She experienced a recent problem which would be expected after this time period. It would be like driving your car without normal service for 7 years. But in any case we are going to her home at no charge to see what we can do to help them out and get them running efficiently. We are currently waiting on the homeowner to schedule this free appointment. I can not update this report after our next visit since Angie list only allows one reponse. However I request that the homeowner please update the report to commentif we have done everything possible to satify her situation. I also invite her to call me directly at 919-291-4682 David Dombrowski

Description of Work: Last year they put in a new unit (heating and air) for me. When I turned the unit on today, it smelled, they came out and said the coil was bad so they would spray it for me. I told them it did not sound like a permanent fit. They told me a UV light would help, which would be more money every 2 years to replace. I told them I just wanted a new coil instead.

This was a heat pump system that had signs of what is known in the industry as "dirty sock syndrome." For reasons unknown and not related to brand, some heat pumps put off an odor that actually smells like dirty socks. The correct solution is to clean the coils and see if that helps. In most cases, we then replace the coil with a model that is coated to help prevent the situation. Again this is an evironmental problem across brands. ARS has provided for this customer a full replacement coil under warranty at no cost what so ever. This has been completed and will take care of the situation. The service tech mentioned adding an UV light since that has been proven to be an effective accessory product in assisting in purifying air conditions. The odor was an issue in this home and this was an additional solution. I would kindly request that the homeowner rerate us from a B rating with a C in price to an A rating. ARS provided a complete new coil at no cost at all and the only sales option mentioned was a direct relationship item to the odor. Since we did all of this for free, I would appreciate your rating the price and value as an A since free is certainly a great price. If there are any other concerns please call me directly and I will be glad to help Thank you David Dombrowski

Every time a service tech came out they would make sure I knew that our system was old and about to fail. Every other service call some part (a capacitor, a heating element) would be failing and require a several hundred dollar part. After years of listening to this (but no failures) we decided it would be more cost effective to get new units (both because of energy efficiency and maintenance). We made an appointment for an ARS rep to come gives us a quote at noon on a Saturday. The rep was a half hour late, which was a bit of an inconvenience because we had not yet had lunch since we thought that this would be a quick visit. We were wrong -- by 2:30 the rep was still at our home and I had to start making lunch while he went and did more calculations in his van. In the meantime it was a non-stop high pressure hard sell like I have rarely seen. After initially complementing our duct work, the rep became convinced that we needed new duct work and new intakes cut into our walls. As part of the sales pitch the duct work was half off and the intakes were free. A literal good cop-bad cop routine was employed via walkie-talkie, in which the rep "negotiated" with his manager for a better price for us. My wife and I had been interested in a dual stage, higher efficiency heat pump but had been told that it would cost $5000 more per unit. Given that we were quoted $8000 per unit for the lower grade HVAC, that seemed like too much, so we were left with a quote for two mid-range units for a bit more than $16000. That price, of course, was only good if we agreed to the deal on the spot. After we finally convinced the rep to leave our home with a quote, we were told that the price would in fact be good until 7:59 am Monday morning (I wish I were making this up). I was given a manufacturer's brochure (Rheem) for the mid-range unit in our quote and, after the rep finally left, I was able to check out the specific model number in our quote on-line. I found out that that model number was not the mid-range unit that the sales rep had told us it was. Instead it was the bottom-priced, economy unit by Rheem. (I still have the manufacturer brochure he left us for the mid-range unit). Later in the week when I called this to the attention of the sales rep I was told that that the economy units were "just as good". We decided to go ahead and get additional quotes rather than agree to the questionable offer by ARS. After not calling by 7:59 am on Monday, I was called by ARS and asked if I still wanted the units at that price. When I said no, I was told then that I could probably have until Thursday. By Thursday I was able to get cheaper quotes for more efficient, higher-end equipment from two different vendors. During the following weeks I was repeatedly called by ARS (at least once a day) and told that they could price match, but after the bait-and-switch and the hard sell I was no longer interested. Despite telling them this they kept calling until I told them that someone else had already installed new units. I feel like I dodged a bullet between not getting the equipment I wanted, not getting the equipment I was told I would get, and saving thousands of dollars, but I also feel like a fool for all the years I paid ARS to do maintenance on my previous units. I recommend avoiding this company like the plague.
Description of Work: ARS had already been servicing our home's HVAC units when we purchased our house. We had them perform service in the fall and spring for three years. At their prompting we asked for a quote to replace our home's original dual HVAC units, which were 25 years old and, though still functional, seemingly driving up our energy bills more each year.

I am very sorry about the concern mentioned by the homeowner but they appear to be communication issues and incorrect expectations. Please note that at 25 years old, these units were well past their expected lifespan and extremely inefficient based on todays energy saving products. They are r-22 based and this equipment was outlawed by the government for manufacture 2 years ago. The comments that they experienced continued failure of componants is normal for units of that age. I apologize for the rep being late however there was an initial miscommunication in that the appointments all take between 2 to 3 hours and this is confirmed when the appointment is made. By law, we must perform a series of measurements and calculations on the home and present these in a document named Acca Manual J and Manual s to the permit authority. This is code and since every window, wall, floor, duct etc must be measures, this calculation takes at least an hour. so the expectation of a short visit was unrealistic. The equipment selection is based upon these reports and it can not be simplified into categories since all of the componants are variable. All of ARS pricing is published and is not at the discretion of the project manager. There are 3 discounts that may be issued to reduce the cost. The first are published rebates from the manufacturer or promotions offered by ARS via mailings or the Web. The second is discounts related to associations such as armed forces, teacher, senior citizen, etc. The "good cop-bad cop" description is a complete misunderstanding of the Managers ability to discount based upon productivity. HVAC is a weather driven business and demand is slow when the weather is nice. ARS hires drug free, criminally background checked professionals typically withfamilies to support. When business is slow the Manager has the discretion to reduce the cost to keep people working. ARS feels it has an obligation to their employees to accept work at a lower price rather than lay off people or reduce hours. These discounts are entirely time driven and based upon work load so we have a strict limit on how long the offer may stand. A good analogy is a hotel lowering prices when occupancy is very low and maintaining normal pricing during busy times. This is viewed as a Win-Win situation since it keeps a paycheck for my workers and provides discounts to people willing to adjust their schedules for us. In addition, the homeowner as part of our normal process was provided the following guarantees to show their is no high pressure tactics. The homeowner has a price match guarantee (just like Best Buy) that states we will match the price of any dealer offering the same product, services and warranties. ARS also offers a comfort guarantee that states we will maintain a specific temperature within 1 degree at the thermostat at design conditions or we will take every action possible to make that happen including replacing the units at no charge if needed. Our strongest guarantee is our 2 Year guarantee of satisfaction that states if we can not make the homeowner happy and meet the performance needs, then ARS for 2 years will refund 100% of the investment and remove our system These guarantees should provide complete assurance that we are professional and stand behind our products. ARS has serviced the triangle for 40 years and is involved in servicing over 60,000 homes each year. We will make mistakes as any big company but we provide outstanding customer service in making every situation right. Our BBB rating which ranks complaints against volume shows us at A+ and a complaint rate of less than 0.01% with all resolved. Again I am sorry for this negative experience but I wish that they contacted a Manager if they were unhappy with any employee so we could have cleared up any misunderstandings. Please feel free to contact me directly if I may be of any help in any way. Thank you.
