Kevin Gais is very personable and easy to work with. He had performed work for several other homeowners on our street. The job was challenging for several reasons: We wanted no support piers in the new garage or in the enlarged bonus room; the existing bonus room contained a permanent model railroad that was to remain in place and undamaged despite the fact that one side adjoined the outside wall that was to be demolished; the design of the outside wall of the new recroom should conceal the fact that it was originally a garage; the original brick was long out of production and difficult to match, as were the shingles. Kevin succeeded on all counts. The job was bid by three other contractors, one of whom could not guarantee that the model layout wouldn't be damaged; the others were going to use support beams or a truss design that would "bounce" under dynamic load. Kevin solved the problem by using I-beams to support the second floor, and demolished the wall himself to make sure the layout wasn't damaged. The recroom wall looks like original construction. Finally, the brick and shingles used match reasonably well. The project is very functional and looks great. It was completed reasonably close to schedule. Kevin has high standards and insists on re-doing work that does not meet them. The only problems were with no-show subcontractors (he "fired" a couple) and with errors by the building suppliers. You wouldn't know there's a depression going on with the building trades. Overall, he did a very nice job and I would use him again.
