Southern Showplace Landscapes

Do not use this company, we had a beautiful home built in Locust, NC in March 2023. BJ and his crew were a nightmare. We paid them $16k for a poorly done job. Many things went wrong. First, they did not put weed preventive liner in our flower beds, now we have weeds growing everywhere. We are going to have to remove the pine needles ourselves and lay the liner to make it look pretty. Second, we had 6 Sakura Japanese Cherry Trees planted, 3 are dead. We have contacted BJ through text, email, and phone without any success. $16k? I should had use Pikes Nursery for the same price. I only use BJ Fisher because my builder recommended him.

I have been a NC licensed GC (residential and Commercial) for 22 years and built my first personal home in 1997. I hired Southern Showplace Landscapes to install our landscaping for our newest home (personal home 7). BJ Fisher (owner) has been one of the best sub-contractors that I have ever delt with. He communicates extremely well and got the job done in a very timely manner. I have been using the same plumber since 1997, and now I will be using Southern Showplace Landscapes every time. I could not be more pleased with this company. I have had landscaping done cheaper but I will never go back to other companies that I have used. I do not give a review like this lightly and I feel that I have a high level of integrity. If I truly didn't feel this way, there would be no way I would post this for possible future customers to read!

We have had the worst possible experience with this company. BJ Fisher has been an absolute nightmare to work with. We purchased a brand new Gary Laton house in July of this year and after the first heavy rain we had what resembled a swamp as our back yard. It was devastating to see that the yard didn’t have the swells cut correctly prior to selling us this house which is odd considering all three houses were Gary Latons and all of them apparently were worked on by BJ Fisher and his crew. The last time they came out they began to chop away in our yard with their bobcat and they didn’t even get permission from 811 to dig, which is a huge no-no. BJ and his entire crew lack professionalism in the sense of they just show up and don’t announce themselves until you walk outside and there are men doing work on your property. BJ Fisher was bold, arrogant and unprofessional the entire time. He blocks his customers when you contact them to fix their mistakes and we learned that firsthand after he blocked my father. BJ was so confident in his work that he told us by the end of November we would have to mow because the grass would be growing like crazy. Well new flash, a good chunk of the yard is still struggling to grow any grass and your men missed several areas completely but we knew it would be like talking to a brick wall so we opted to not contact him. I don’t understand how a landscaping company can’t even get grass right. We don’t know if this time the swell is correct because we haven’t had a heavy rain yet. As for the yard as a whole it’s sloppy, choppy and quite frankly a perfect reflection of what this company stands for, mediocre work and a boss that’s a total pain in the *** to deal with. When you bury trash and natural sediment that should be cleared at the time of sod and building a new turf (water bottles, blades, dead tree chunks, and large rocks) that in itself should be a huge red flag—but sadly we didn’t know until it was too late. If we learned anything from buying this house it’s to share our experience with anybody and everybody who will listen so they won’t encounter the same nightmare we unknowingly signed up for. When we kept complaining about the lack of acceptable progress in the yard Gary Laton told us they have done nothing but try and he put in $10k trying to fix this yard even through it was a waste of time in the middle of summer but he did it to appease us. Well we explained to Gary if BJ did this right the first time you wouldn’t have wasted any of your money so maybe take it out on the incompetence of your contractor. Even the erosion control nets that were placed before we moved here kept getting people to trip and fall so we had to ultimately take most of them up in the fenced in part of our yard because it was becoming dangerous to us and our dogs, our dogs had multiple cuts to their paw pads and had to end up on meds from the infections, we even tried to get BJ to provide an alternative to the nets and he didn’t even try to help us, it was nets or nothing which apparently was not true because we had multiple companies come out and give us quotes on how to fix this cluster-f we were placed in when we bought this house. BJ told us how lucky we were that Gary was willing to come back multiple times to fix our yard—I still can’t wrap my head around this. How are we lucky that Gary is trying to fix the mistakes BJ and his company made? Why the world wouldn’t you fix this when you know this whole thing could have been avoided if proper steps were taken at the time the houses were being built? We finally heard back from Gary and his response about BJ was this: I’ll check with Bj on the yard repair. He said he wouldn’t go back unless I told him to go back, because of the way his guys were treated and disrespected. So, if you talk to them, treat them as you would want to be treated. We’re all trying to our best to get you satisfied. Thanks.” Treat people how you want to be treated? Are you serious right now? Pictures are from July through now. Buyer beware, do your research…we wish we had.

We met and talked a few times and then he disappeared. He won't return my phone calls or emails. He's completely unresponsive and unprofessional. BEWARE!
