It went very well -- Parke was quick to respond to phone calls and usually more exacting than we were when it came to workmanship from his crew and subcontractors. Easy to reach by either phone or email, came out frequently to check on the crew's progress.
Description of Work: Renovated a basement room, turning it into a craft room.

When we moved into our house, we knew it was going to need some significant renovations right from the start. We got several estimates, and decided to go with Shade Tree Services. We could not be more pleased that we did. Parke was incredibly helpful- he helped us consider different shower options and came with to shop and pick them out. He is easy to get in touch with and was quick to respond to any questions I had. The new roof looks great. We would definitely use Shade Tree in the future for other renovations, and would recommend him to friends.

ShadeTree Services impressed us from the initial walk through of the project until the completion. They were very conscientious, thorough and over communicated through out the project. Pros - over communicated; met their commitments and appointments; final contract estimate was accurate; notified us when the sub contractors changed appointment times; handled unplanned expenses in a professional manner and shared the cost when appropriate; cleaned the job site on a regular basis; built rapport and trust during the entire process Cons - some challenges scheduling the sub-contractors, we actually were two weeks late on a 12 week project due to their availability In summary ShadeTree was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them to anyone that is planning to renovate their home or have and addition added.
Description of Work: Finished basement including a wet bar, laundry and game room. Shade Tree was the general contractor who managed the plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and painting contractors. They also provided carpentry services and oversight for the cabinets and flooring.

It was our privilege to work for the [removed members name]. We were disappointed that we didn't make our deadline. Several unexpected events deterred our efforts, most notably losing our plumber of several years due to health reasons, and a spike in the post holiday season market, leaving all our tradesmen with hectic schedules. Attics and basements are the toughest projects. Eight trades operating in a somewhat inaccessible location never progress exactly as planned. Other than that, the job went well. The [removed members name] were instrumental to the outcome and their effort is greatly appreciated.

Absolutely, and unequivocally, perfect. Parke Wagner and his team were exceptional throughout every aspect of this project. Initially we were unsure we had the budget for our dream, but Parke was amazingly thorough and his work, and billing, matched his estimates at the beginning of the job. Initially, we did not include the hardwood floor installation but the exacting perfection with which Parke Wagner executed the fireplace/shelving unit design and installation convinced us quickly that Shade Tree Service, Inc was the right company to do the additional work we desired. With the expert help of Shade Tree and Parke Wagner we have a transformed home that exceeds our expectations and perfectly fits our budget. Please understand, in the beginning we were unsure how to proceed, unsure how much it would cost, unsure what were the right materials to choose -- our blessing is that we found Shade Tree and Parke Wagner here on Angie's List and it could not have worked out better. Parke was consistently professional, always available for advice, many times found us better deals and options on materials, always ready to offer sound advice on the many options that must be considered in a remodeling job of the size and scope we needed. SHADE TREE SERVICES is your right choice. Parke Wagner is GOOD 2 GO. We offer that you can contact us anytime for personal reference regarding the work we have just finished with Parke at brassobob@hotmail.com. I will send you before & after pictures of the work he has done for us. We have other projects for our home in the coming months and I assure you we will not look for other general contractors, we will use SHADE TREE SERVICES. Trustworthy, dependable, reliable, absolutely, the best! Bob & Jeannine Harrison, Fuquay Varina, NC

Parke was very responsive, polite, and clearly knowledgeable about his work. We had several other estimates and he was the only to fully inspect the problem and explain exactly what needed to be done. He commenced working very soon after we hired him and the work was done quickly (which is important when you have 2 kids and a dog; this type of work can be disruptive in your life). We are very satisfied and will certainly hire him again in the future.
Description of Work: We had a rotten band joist on the side of our house by the patio. The band was exposed behind the brick steps on the patio, which allowed water to seep behind them. Parke removed the brick steps and the rotten band joist, siding and other components. He coated thoroughly all water stained and molded components in the affected area with stain blocker, primer. He used fiberglass filler to fill any voids at the underside of the threshold. Installed silicone and metal flashing under threshold. Installed new band section, sheathing and siding at affected area with pressure treated lumber. Removed over-sized trim from door and replaced with rot free material and secured existing trim around door. Primed, caulked and painted the affected areas. And finally, he built pressure treated steps to replace the brick steps and attached them to house.

Mr. Wagner was professional from the very beginning, coming out to do an estimate and providing a few different ideas for the layout of the decking boards and a different way to do the screening on the porch. He promised an estimate by the end of the week and delivered that estimate two days later. We accepted his proposal and he began work a week after that. His crew showed up promptly when scheduled and they began demolition of the old deck and removal of old screening on the porch. His crew was efficient and professional, taking care to not damage anything that could potentially be staying. The decking boards were to be kiln dried so that we would be able to stain them immediately. We had agreed to this because Mr. Wagner was given a great deal on the pricing of the kiln dried materials. As it turned out, the supplier had promised something that they were unable to deliver, and Mr. Wagner had to fork over the extra money to get kiln dried lumber at a higher cost. He made it clear from day one what had happened, and immediately made it clear that I was not going to be held responsible for the additional cost of the lumber. It should be noted that it was a significant difference and essentially eliminated the profit he would have made on this job. Despite several cost overruns on the job, Mr. Wagner never expected us to pay the additional costs unless it was something that we specifically requested as a change to the original proposal. The deck was built within two days or so and looked great! The team then began inserting the new trim pieces needed to accommodate the new screens that would have to be put it. A new floor was also put down. A few days later, a sub-contracted team came in to paint the entire screened in porch prior to the screens going in. They completed in a day and the screens were measured for and created within a few days. The screens were put in and finally the carpet went down, completing the project overall. Over the next week, we worked with Mr. Wagner to make small changes or fixes to the final product. Mr. Wagner made all of these alterations or fixes without complaint and with attention to detail. He was every bit as concerned with ensuring that we were nothing short of 100% happy with the final product as we were. To sum up, we had a great experience with Mr. Wagner and his crew. They did an excellent job and the deck and screened in porch look absolutely fantastic. Given that we spend 9 months a year on that screened in porch, it needed to be great, and it is. We were so satisfied with his work that we are currently working to contract him for two other projects (an additional floating deck and closing in a shed area underneath the screened in porch). Mr. Wagner and his crew were professional, polite, and took great care to not damage the yard and to clean up after themselves at the end of each day. I highly recommend Mr Wagner and his company to anyone that is interested in having work done. He goes the extra mile to ensure that you are happy with the end result and he is extremely easy to work with. Most important, he cares as much about the outcome of the project as you do, which goes a long way with me as I have worked with others in the past who just wanted to get paid. It was refreshing to not feel as though this was all about the money for Mr. Wagner.
Description of Work: Parke and his crew removed old decking boards and put new ones on our deck. Additionally, they removed the old screens on our screened in porch, put down new carpet and painted and re-screened that porch. We also had Parke contracted to add new gutters to the screened in porch and add very large planter boxes to the deck, along with new stairs.

What a wonderful experience! Parke is not only our contractor but now a friend as well. We can't wait to see him again next week to discuss the construction of our screened porch and deck addition. He had to construct exterior siding to match the existing siding as it was no longer available. He had to handcraft chair rail molding for the area where the bookcases had been as the original was not available. We discovered plumbing within the interior wall we wanted removed but he came up with a wonderful solution which is even better than our original plan. He then strengthened the new opening as it was a structural support wall. He and his crew carefully removed all the existing crown and chair rail moldings for the interior remodel in order that it could be re-used and save us some money. He consulted us about every decision, listened to our ideas and concerns, answered every phone call or email promptly, always arrived on time and used the same crew throughout the job. We were not living in the house at the time so he and his men had a key and free access to the house. They cleaned up every day and not only removed their rubbish every day but also happily disposed of ours as well. Parke was happy to work with our electrican, plumber and heating engineer and also happy to let us do work wherever we could to save us money. We all read horror stories about remodelling, contactors disappearing without finishing the job, poor workmanship, escalating costs, different people turning up at the job every day etc. That will not happen with Shade Tree Service. Parke and his crew were a pleasure to have around our house and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Parke and his crew did timber rot repair work, replaced windows, removed fixed bookcases and removed an interior wall.

Words fall short of expressing how much we appreciate this review. The Owner's elected to take on most of the contracting work themselves. They performed plenty of heavy labor too. This couple worked as hard as we did. They surely earned an A from us, for having strong backs and stronger resolve. Fortunately we have an opportunity to show them our gratitude on the next project.

Description of Work: We contacted the provider to get a quote for our garage addition with 2 additional bedrooms and bonus. This was his response: "Are you planning a pre-bid meeting with all invited contractors at one time or are you arranging individual times? What time would you want us there on May 12? How many contractors are you accepting bids from? Do you have any photos, plans or sketches to share with us?". I responded that with 5 children, one time would be great, BUT we were more than willing to meet him seperately if he desired. I told him that we would be getting 5 quotes overall - which seems to be standard for a job of this size. I also told him that I have a simple sketch that I could send him. His response was slightly surprising to me: "There is no problem meeting with other contractors present but with five of them bidding, the prospect of winning the bid is low, especially without architectural/structural plans from which to base our numbers. We specialize in personalized service, investing a lot of time in our proposals and projects. Most of our business comes through building a close relationship with our customer and our reputation for performing custom solutions. While your reasons for shopping for a contractor in this way are totally understandable and sensible, I feel we are out of our forte in this circumstance". He decided not to bid the project - which is fine, BUT I'm not understanding his reasoning. He states he has a lower chance because we have five bidding - so if I only got him to bid, he would be willing to do it? I'm not willing to invest tens of thousands of dollars on a project without making sure it is inline and reasonable. If he was opposed to meeting in a group - as he suggested - we clearly offered to meet him seperately. As far as not having plans to work from, I'm hiring him to do that. His website CLEARLY states a page for drawings. This is a service he provides. I'm not sure why US not having the drawings is a downside if that is what he is being hired to do? If I am capable of drawing plans, I would contract it myself - not hire a general contractor/builder to do it for me. I cannot state to the quality of his work because it seems like he only wants the "guaranteed" jobs - and I am sorry I cannot give someone a job without first protecting my family financially. This is a cash job and we want to make sure the job is done correctly and in the smartest way possible. We were looking for an average of costs to base our opinion, as well as meeting face to face with contractors to get a feeling for them.

According to the client, she has received two proposals for a 1,000 sf addition. She wants four more for a total of six. One has been rejected already and she will be rejecting four more. To accurately price a project this large, we prefer to have professionally prepared plans. It is possible to price the job without plans but basically it entails designing the addition so that you may calculate the quantities. Otherwise it’s guessing, by applying average unit costs from previous projects. This is done all the time by others and can be detrimental. In addition, the bidders will be bidding on their own designs of which there will be five at least with varying qualities and structural configurations i.e. roof trusses, TJI’s, steel girders, floor trusses, foundations, etc. Our decision to not participate was based on the amount of effort it would take to make the proposal, the amount of competition, the location of the job and our current workload. We are not overextended in any way but we are busy. This was a difficult business decision that we had to make. We informed her promptly and thanked her for thinking of us. I believe that should earn A’s in both Responsiveness and Professionalism. We offered our design services for $30.00 per hour. We would also welcome the opportunity to bid a fixed price on the plans alone if she would be interested. There are Architects on Angie’s List as well that will offer quotes. With some plans, all contractors could bid on the same thing and level the playing field. This sounds like a great job. Hopefully she will give us a chance on the plans. We have nothing but A’s on every report here on Angie’s List for projects undertaken. My job is to make sure that continues.

We are at the moment working with ShadeTree Service which I know I got on Angie’s list. They haven’t completed their job because it is remodeling, but so far we are very pleased with Park Wagnor who is the owner of the company. They actually don’t do trees. I’d rather not say too much until they are finished. They are removing windows and enlarging opening for bigger windows. They are installing French doors. They have removed an interior wall to allow an open plan environment. They repaired some rotten timbers underneath the house and the crossways. He has been great. He has been fine. We haven’t had any problems with them. He is very quick with email responses. We are having a delay at the moment while we await certain inspections. The work has to hold for inspectors to come out, but he keeps us informed of that. He is due out tomorrow or the next day to finish off the project. We should finish within ten days. He uses the same guy and doesn’t sub out which we don’t like to happen. So he has same guys working for him who are very very polite. Only one speaks English but you can still find a way to communicate. They are clean and tidy. They are polite and extremely hardworking. Park lets them in as he has his own key and stays with them to make sure what they are doing and sometimes he comes back at lunch time. He always comes back in the evening and takes their rubbish away each day as well.

I contacted Parke numerous times before he finally got back to me saying that I gave him the wrong number to call. I rechecked every email and found the correct phone numbers on every one. We finally set up an appointmen,t of which he never showed up for, calling two days later saying he was to sick to call and cancel. So I gave him another chance and yet again set up another appointment. Guess what.... he was late, brought his dog and son and told us that if we were looking to have our deck done in a timely manner that he doesn't work like that. BUT that when it was done it would be perfect. We asked what that meant and he told us that sometimes he starts a job then goes on to another one but will get back to mine. Overall he gave a very impression. I am sure when and if he does do someones house it is perfect but it won't be mine.

It went great overall. The communication between the company and myself was excellent and the price came in where it should have come in. The workers were very friendly and cleaned up the work area at the end of each day. They were also very careful to not track dirt into the house and took off their shoes plus laid cardboard, etc. over the walk area. I was very pleased all the way around and would highly recommend them again for projects.

My husband and I decided to go with Parke after interviewing several general contractors from the area. He has been easy to work with, responsive, and flexible, which made this process much easier for us. Parke was effecient at coordinating the work that had to be done and ensured we were happy with it during each phase of the process. He also coordinated the permits and inspections required. We are very happy with the quality of the work and customer service we received. I highly recommend Parke and we will use him in the future for any other work on our house.
Description of Work: We hired Parke to lay a brick foundation under a bump-out of our house. The settling of the bump-out was causing sections of plaster walls inside the house to crack, which was unsightly. We contracted Parke to install the foundation which included an access door and vent, and repair the cracks inside the house and repaint severals walls that were repaired. All of this was done according to code, with permits and inspections.

Shade Tree Service was hired to rebuild our 12 by 12 back deck that was extensively weathered and had been built with not-so-good-carpentry skills. I called Parke in late February to come out to see the old deck and to quote us an estimate. He was very professional from beginning to end. Parke kept us in the loop when it came to his schedule and the other projects he had going on. He itemized and explained the proposal in plain writing. The things that were to be done on the job were written in contract form. If any extras were needed to be done, he itemized those and gave us copies of reciepts for extra materials. This was good considering that he and his assistant discovered irregularities on the old deck that has to be addressed. He even submitted two quotes, one with a high grade lumber and the other with a slightly lower grade lumber, to give us a better picture of the overall cost. Parke and Stephen built our new deck with a professionalism that is hard to find. Looking at the completed project, it is apparent that it was built by people who are actual carpenters. They know their craft and take pride in making functional and beautiful structures. Our old deck was a case study on why you have to use deck screws, bolts, proper lumber, concrete, and stain on a deck. Our new deck is a case study in how to do the job right. Sometime soon, the before-and-after pics will probably be up on the Shade Tree site. This deck is the one with the two-tone staining; a near black stain on the legs and framing and a tan cedar stain on the flooring and rails. The only items on it that are pre-fab are the step risers and the post caps. It is awesome.
Description of Work: Shade Tree Service demolished an existing 12 by 12 deck to the frame and made the frame stronger, rebuilt the deck with picket style rails, replaced the steps on it, did repair work to the flashing, stained the deck, and hauled off the debris from the job.

Thank you so much Members. We totally enjoyed working for you. Not that it is important really but, the step risers are not prefab. We cut them in the field in an attempt to match existing dimensions, which in hindsight, I should have just started from scratch. Regardless, I beleive it's going to work perfectly with the landscaping you plan. If you remember, we removed a riser to bring the bottom to above grade. Please send us some photos after you get the landscaping done. The construction photos are now posted on the web at www.shadetreeservice.net.

ShadeTree originally completed the design work for the deck approximately 1 year ago, at that time I was very impressed with their professionalism and attention to detail, but thought I would construct the deck myself. Approximately a year later, without completing the deck myself due to time constraints, I decided to contact ShadeTree again and have them complete the project. The project started out a little slow, but Parke explained that he sometimes starts slow in order to ensure that the project is planned out thoroughly and that surprises are minimized, which made perfect sense and I very much appreciated the level of thought and effort that went into the planning phase, and looking back it wasn't really that slow! The construction started and I was immediately put at ease and my beliefs of ShadeTree and Parke were quickly confirmed, he is a perfectionist and the level of quality was outstanding. This was also confirmed as I had friends, relatives, and contractors/trades "inspect" the project throughout the construction process, all were amazed at how well the deck was constructed and the high attention to detail. Construction continued for approximately 3 weeks, which was approximately 1 week longer than the original timeframe, but this was 100% due to design and material changes that we (homeowners) made during the project. Parke was extremely helpful in providing great advice and design options throughout the project, most of which were on target and we chose to implement. It was during the construction of the stairs (multiple levels with landings) and the detail work around the hotub/spa where I again realized that I made the right choice utilizing ShadeTree for the project. Parkes' attention to detail and high standards for his and all ShadeTree employee's work is truly impressive. Parke also identified a few concerns with the way the original deck (built when the house was built) was constructed and took it upon himself to correct, which I greatly appreciated. In addition to Parke, I found that all the ShadeTree employees were extremely professional, pleasant, and very respectful of my property. I honestly feel that Parke designed and built this deck as if it were his own, and that provides me with a great deal of comfort and confidence that it was done right and will be enjoyed for years to come. I also feel that in the event I do have an issue with the deck at any point in the future (which I'm sure I won't) I am 100% confident that ShadeTree will stand behind their product and address the issue, and best of all they would do it in a non-confrontational extremely professional manner. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with every aspect of ShadeTree and our project and we would not hesitate to use them again and we would highly recommend them to anyone who asked. ShadeTree probably won't provide you with the lowest bid for your project, BUT if you want the project done correctly for a very fair price then ShadeTree

I invited Parke Wagner to interview for the general contractor role on the strength of his website and little else. But when an old friend won that job, he invited Parke to bid on the framing, siding and exterior trim. It worked out very well. Joining the addition to the existing house (built in 1901) posed several tricky challenges and Parke (an engineer by training) worked them out with the general contractor (Paul Konove of Carolina Country Builders -- also an engineer by training). Parke also communicated with his crews extremely well and everyone had fun on the job. He loves what he does and his enthusiasm for fine building is contagious. It became clear to me that he could indeed have managed the general contractor role very well and I would not hesitate to hire him for that role in the future. Or recommend him to a friend. Although he came to my job with no more than an average knowledge of the latest in applied building science, he latched on to the opportunity to learn under the t******* of Paul Konove, a past president of the state sustainable energy association and a green building trainer on the side. Together they built us an extremely durable, safe, healthy and energy-efficient addition, without sacrificing good looks and functionality. There was a small bump in price, but that only took him up to the level of my estimate and the losing bidders. Parke's work hours varied as he might knock off at 3:30 to watch his son's ball game or meet with the school teacher (he's a single dad). But he always came when he said he would, honored my property and landscaping, cleaned up at the end of the day, and met his deadlines.
Description of Work: Framed, sheathed and sided a 660 SF addition and installed windows.
