The service man didn’t arrive until after six pm on a Friday night. He was very nice and seemed very experienced. He was efficient and wrote up the issue for the company to provide a quote. It was going to take 2, 25ft flex ducts, two boots, and two hours of labor. The company called me on Monday and quoted over $1,000! I went and bought the parts for less than $100 and did the job myself with the help of my dad. I normally don’t write reviews, but this isn’t the first time this company has been below satisfactory. I had problems earlier this year that took three diagnosis to resolve the issue of a thermostat that just needed to be reprogrammed. One of the service techs that misdiagnosed it said that the whole system was wired wrong and needed to be reinstalled. Overall, the quality of the service techs was hit and miss. Some new what they were doing, others didn’t know their elbow from their knee. In the end, I’ve decided that it is not worth going back to them.
Description of Work: Requested a quote to replace ductwork and vent boots for two floor vents that my dog peed in.

After being in my home only a year or so, my outside coil needed replacing. Then just a few days ago, my inside TXV and coil went haywire. I was told it needed replaced. So both coils will be replaced in under 5 years. First I was given an estimate of over $1750! Then it was reduced to $800 and finally $600 and some change. The problem seems to be these units are poor quality and may be undersized for the homes. Several neighbors have had similar issues. Many thousands of dollars in costs to families with poor HVAC systems. My unit struggles to keep temp under 76 degrees in summer months. Very frustrating!

Mr. [Member Name Removed]. Our RNC President & VP met you at your home along with one of our Service Technicians. We reviewed the load for your home with you showing the equipment installed in your home was properly sized. As discussed, we are the installers and the warranty length & coverage of refrigerant, etc is determined by the manufacturer. Your coil and txv were replaced on March 2nd and we have not had any visits to your home since so we hope the issues remedied themselves once the parts were replaced. Thanks again for allowing us to work through this with you.

My experience with Carolina Comfort Air has been frustrating and disappointing. I was referred to Carolina Comfort Air by a co-worker and reviewed your information on Angie’s List. We installed a unit for approximately $9000.00 in the hot month of June. We chose an XR16 Trane unit for our 2nd and 3rd floors and added zoning for the two floors. We chose the company with the middle range price. Upon accepting the offer for a same week installation, I was informed that they would not be able to install for another week. To accommodate, they did provide a window unit to help us at night get through the 90+ degree weather. The installers were very friendly and professional. During installation the electrician came to complete the electrical work for the new unit. Unbeknownst to us, he swapped out the existing units’ circuit breaker and put a smaller one on our downstairs unit. That afternoon the breaker flipped twice on our existing unit (not the one we were replacing). Upon completion of the installation, the breaker kept flipping every few days. After a week or two of constant flipping of the breaker, we contacted Carolina Comfort Air about the problems that we were experiencing that began when the new unit was installed. The electrician (contractor) returned to the home and apologized for the problem that he did not have the appropriate breaker size at the time of the installation and he would put a better breaker on the unit. The breaker problem seemed to be fixed. A week after installation the unit stopped working on a Saturday afternoon. Due to the weekend, we had to wait unit Sunday for repairs. Gary came out established that the system had shut off due to water back up and unclogged the drain lines and the unit was working again. Inspector came out and approved the electrical but failed the inspection due to CO2 detectors and automatic closing door to the unit. Our sales person, Terry, had pointed out the possibility of the automatic closing door and had identified the CO2 detectors needed on the 2nd and 3rd Floor. A week later, we noticed water on the ceiling on the 2nd floor. The air conditioner was spraying water from a pipe near the shut off valve. Apparently this had been going on for several days as the attic space was all wet (it did not flow into the pan because it was spraying upward). An additional pipe needed to be added to assist with the circulation/flow. On Monday, a repair person came out to paint the ceiling damaged due to the water and install the C02 detectors. He did install one detector when I asked him about the 2nd one it was not on his order. The initial paint did not cover the stain. I spoke with Phillip regarding the frustration and was very professional and apologized for all of my issues. A second visit was required to repaint the stain. He did not install the C02 detector on the second visit saying his manager told him not to do it. The breaker was still flipping a few times per week and I called in a request to have the electrician come back out to fix it. The electrician (not a contractor) came out and explained that the wrong size breaker was on our existing unit and should have been a 25 amp. He put in the correct breaker and the problem was solved. Another appointment was made to install the missing CO2 detector. Gary came out and installed on the 2nd floor. Terry called and apologized for the confusion. The Raleigh City inspector came out and approved the installation. After discussions with Anna she informed me that the rebate was reduced due to a different thermostat being installed. The wrong thermostat was put in based on the rebate from Duke Energy. Terry contacted me and apologized for the error and assured me that it would be taken care of for my rebate to be $500.00 as quoted. The service manager, Carol, apologized profusely and said she was going to send a $150.00 gift card as a token of good faith that they are working to resolve the issue (this was never received.) The inspection was completed and an upgraded thermostat was installed on September 7th by Barry. Today 10/5, I contacted Duke Energy and they are not in receipt of the rebate. Duke also informed me that they will only accept the rebate up to 90 days after installation. I contacted Anna and she stated that she was waiting for an internal invoice from Management and that due to the late installation of the thermostat I would still get the rebate. Anna assured me several times this is an internal process issue. She stated she would call me back tomorrow to confirm the status. I am a patient person and understand life is too short to get upset about the small things, however, I am beyond frustrated. The gift card that was never received plus the $500.00 from Duke Energy is a large amount of money -- This is still outstanding.

Terrible Customer Service. My AC unit stopped blowing cold air overnight, so I contacted CC and the only appointment was between 2-5 PM. Since CC was the last company to service my AC unit, I elected to wait it out. At 5 PM no one had contacted me, so I called them and they said that I was next customer on the tech's list. Approximately 20 minutes later, I was contacted by another CC rep & told that the tech could not make it and that they would hand me off to another tech. It was too late to contact another AC service company, so I had no choice but to wait for the after hours tech. After 4 hours of waiting, I called them again around 9 PM & I was told that the tech had two more stops before he could make it to me. It was 9 PM and the tech was in currently in Cary. I made the appointment with the Clayton office & I could not see how the tech was going to make it to my house before midnight, so I cancelled the appointment & checked into a hotel. They were given a 7 hour window and still could not make it. Overscheduling at the customers expense. Thanks Carolina Comfort.

Everything went fine until we got down to dollars. Their quote for the exact equipment and work done by another Trane certified comfort specialist dealer was $2,600 higher. Yes, a full 33% more than the competition. We discussed this; they do not price-match, and were not willing to budge on the price. So, I go the work done for $7,747 instead of $10,300.

My experience with Carolina Comfort Heating and Air was not good. The sales presentation and proposal were excellent. Then things started heading south. My system was installed on a Thursday. Friday morning when I got up it was short cycling; on for 5 seconds and off for 4 minutes. I called and two techs came out in the afternoon. Their diagnosis (incorrect) was a defective part that they would order on Monday. Wednesday I checked to see if the part was in and scheduled a service call. This technician was great. I told him the symptoms and he said didn't believe the part was defective, and suspected that the installers had wired it incorrectly. He fixed the wiring and checked over the rest of the installation. A few days later, Carolina Comfort Heating and Air sent out my salesperson to go through the installation and hopefully sell a service agreement. Needless to say, I passed on the service agreement. He also told me I would get a rebate from my power company for 300 and a tax credit of 300 dollars when I file for 2017. When he left, I looked up the details on the tax credit and it turns out that is only for systems with a higher efficiency than mine. I can't in good conscience recommend them.

Our first call was met with two different individuals who were only interested in selling us a maintenance plan (you HAVE to go through marketing to set up an appointment). The scheduler also was intent on selling us a plan. We were supposed to have someone out on Monday, Oct. 10. No one came - no one called until Wednesday afternoon. The person explained that because of the hurricane, their entire system was down and this was their first day back and could they reschedule? No apology was given. We rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 14 between 9-10. On Friday at 11:30 we received a call that the technician was running behind and wouldn't make the 9-11 window. We asked how long and they indicated he'd be there within an hour. He got to our house at 1:30, did the work, left fingerprints on the wall and also left our upstairs thermostat set to 85 degrees. Since we don't go up often, we didn't realize this until the following morning.

Our first experience with Carolina Comfort Air was not positive. We were surprised when we were contacted by the company offering to send out, free of charge, another technician to check/service our HVAC system. We decided to take the offer and Kevin came out. Although the earlier service was completed properly, Kevin rechecked everything. In addition he answered many questions we had. He also was able to locate the source of an annoying rattle that occurred overtime the furnace came on and fixed that. It was a positive experience and we also got a call from the company following up after his service call.

Very well! Having just returned from a trip abroad, we found our house essentially unlivable - on the hottest day of the year i.e. a temperature of 97º and about 90% humidity! We called several companies, including the one who had installed the unit 8 years ago, and not one of them would agree to even come and inspect it for about a week. Except Carolina Comfort Air - and a technician (Gary) was at our property within 30 minutes - even on a Friday evening! The problem was swiftly diagnosed. On the Sunday morning an estimator (Justin) arrived, found the serial number of the unit and deemed the compressor to be under contract from Trane. (This saved us considerable expense). The new compressor was ordered and arrived a few days later and was efficiently installed by Gary (the entire A/C unit had to be disassembled) with no problems on yet another sweltering day. The bottom line is that this company went out of their way to be helpful, courteous and efficient at all times, especially on a weekend, and at a reasonable cost (just for labor). We would not hesitate for a moment to recommend Carolina Comfort Air to anyone with HVAC issues. And ask for Gary....he is very good!

The units are nice Trane high efficiency. The installation was quick and painless. AFTER, not so much: 1. Was told these units would work with my Nest Thermostats (V2). Upon completion of install, the installation folks couldn't get the AC to switch on. Only heat. They asked ME for documentation on the Nest Thermostats. Then I had to call Nest. Then THEY would talk to their lead service guy. Heard nothing..I ended up having to buy two new Honeywell thermostats to work... 2. Upstairs AC stopped working 3-4 months after install. We turned it off, waited an hour, turned it back on thinking the lines froze (common with our old Goodwin unit). It worked, but I called service to come out and check the unit. They mentioned something about freon being a little low, something about a switch that MAY be bad (didn't replace, didn't do anything)... Now I wonder if this unit fails after 1 year I'm now stuck paying for labor when it should have been fully diagnosed and fixed NOW! 3. Noticed alot of water building up around the AC exit tubes in crawl space. During routine spring maintenance, found two drain tubes thrown into our shrubs from the old system - Comfort Air NEVER PUT THEM BACK ON! Called immediately. Original time was 1-6 PM, no call until 10:15 PM where I was informed that I had to reschedule. Poor! Called the next morning, guy came right out. Put on the drain tubes. 2 weeks later, tons of water still! Took a bit to get someone to reach back out to us, but today (8/4) they came out and HOPEFULLY got them installed correctly. Not sure what kind of damage has been done to our foundation from the glaring error on their part. I would rate them a solid C. However, they are moving lower and lower over time with things that just weren't done right to start.
