This was an excellent experience. Shawn, the owner, came out to bid on the job. He took time to explain everything to me, brought samples to show, and was very professional. He was on time and well prepared, but not super-aggressive about pursuing the sale, which I really appreciated. On the day the job was to start, the project manager encountered an unexpected and serious issue which prevented him from being on site. However, the rest of the crew showed up just a little late and did the job as promised. Shawn called or stopped by each day to ensure the job was progressing smoothly. That performance just speaks volumes about this company. Our new roof looks great--we're still getting compliments on it--the job site was kept clean and tidy, and the workers were extremely courteous and efficient. I just can't say enough good things about them.

They were very professional and prompt. They came out within the week of the call. They were very specific with the estimate. They gave me details on how they would perform the work and how long it would take. They are a very knowledgeable company.

A few months back we heard a drip in the living room after a storm. Last week, we heard a drip in the master bath after a storm. Turned to Angie's list to find a roofer. There are several top rated ones. Southern Home Services was one of them. (I had remembered reading about this company in Angie's List, January issue of Best and Worst Contractors of 2007.) I picked four, including SHS. The others wanted to send out an estimator (7 to 10 days out) to assess the situation. They would get back to us w/ an estimate at which point it would be another one to three weeks to get on the schedule. Well that was a long time when you don't know what will happen next time it rains. I called Shawn he said he would have his Estimator/Project Manager call me back the same day and probably be out the next. Within an hour Robert called. He came out that afternoon!!! We were very relieved. He said he would be here between 4 - 4:30 pm. He called at 4:15 to say he was running a little late and would be about 5:00. We appreciated the call. When he arrived he asked his questions and climbed into the attic. Inspected both areas. Found nothing. Then went up on the roof. When he came down he again said he found nothing BUT he put some silicon in some possible spots just in case. THANK YOU! My husband asked him how much we owed him for the work? I said wait until we get the gutter estimate and pay all at once. Robert went back out and instead of giving us an estimate for the gutters he put his ladder back up and checked several of them himself and said they are all clean, you don't need them cleaned. Understand my husband is in a wheelchair and I couldn't get up there....he could have sold us a gutter cleaning and we would not have known the difference. THANK YOU! Again. So now what do we owe you??? NOTHING! He says. Just remember us in the future. You can count on it!

We contacted several roofers to get estimates for the cost of re-roofing our house. Southern Home Services won our business hands down. They had the most detailed estimate, used the best materials, AND had the lowest cost of anybody else. Shawn was awesome in the customer service area, very responsive, courteous, and informative. Most of the work went without a hitch, the roofing work was completed in two days. There was a problem, though, and I was really impressed with how Shawn handled it. We had a pot rack hanging over our smooth-top stove. One of the roofers dropped a bundle of shingles on the roof, and, since we don't have an attic, that was enough to dislodge several large pots so that they fell and shattered the smooth-top. When I came home, I was shocked to see the carnage, and fully expected to get a "hey, it's not my fault" response. Shawn was SO concerned he arranged for a repairman, offered to bring in a replacement stove, and held out $900 of our payment to him until we were satisfied. I think it's telling that, when a job has an unexpected glitch (even though it really wasn't his fault), he made every effort to make things right. I would recommend this company to anyone needing roofing work done.

I called 7 or 8 companies, siding and handymen services, over a week period looking for someone to fix this problem. SHS was the only crew that called back quickly, showed up when they said they would and actually completed the job. One handyman service called back and quoted the job, but when we scheduled twice with them to complete the work, whether through poor professionalism or honesty, they never showed up to do the work. I'm purposely not naming names, because maybe it was just two bad days for them, but they have the number 4 in their name. In any case, SHS was friendly and attentive, they emailed the quote and got right out and did the job. One thing should be noted, though. This job was subbed out. It was not handled by SHS directly, so the price I paid was likely considerably more. But, my wife and I are happy as this is finally getting done thanks to SHS. Lupe is the sub and he is great. He showed up early, which worked for us, because I work from home and got right to work after answering my questions.

If we could give SHS a grade higher then an "A", we would. They were one of the best contractors we have come across. We dealt with Shawn (who did our estimate and gave us periodic updates on the progress) and Joe (the on site installation point person). Shawn was great from the estimate (no high pressure sales tactics, described all the window facets in "every man" language, didn't try to oversell us on what we didn't need) all the way through the installation (we received an email or a phone call every day detailing what was done, what still needed to be done and a summary of what should be completed day by day). Joe and his crew were excellent as well during the installation; he was professional, polite, prompt and took very good care of our home. Joe even was happy to keep an eye on our dog while he was replacing our doorway. The work was impeccable, they cleaned up after each day and did not seem bothered at all when we asked questions about what was going on in the installation process. The door was even extra work to get it just right and he took the time to make sure that it was done right so we didn't have problems in the future. We would not even bother to call anyone else again for any needs SHS could meet. They were very fairly priced vs. the competition and we Got way more then we paid for just from their top of the line service. Use Shawn, Joe & SHS with 100% confidence.

Called and scheduled an appointment for an estimate. They didn't bother to show up, and never called back.

The company did a fine job. They showed up when they promised to be here, and completed the job in a timely manner. I had some questions about the work performed, and the project manager addressed my concerns in person to my satisfaction.

The work was done very well, in a timely manner. There was a little confusion on the part of the contractor installing the gutters to begin with, but things were cleared up in less than an hour. Can't ask for better communication than that!

I contacted the company by phone and left a message. They returned the phone call the next day. The guy that did the estimate was on time for the appointment. I was expecting for the roof to be replaced. He looked at the roof and said it was in very good shape and that I did not need a new roof. He did recommend the repairs where there were leaks. The repairs were done the following week. I was at work when it was done. They were so fast I didn't know they had finished.

Darn fine job. Shawn and Rob were on time for the estimate, on time for the initiation of work, and on time in completing the job. Their crew worked steadily except for rather short lunch breaks, and did a bang-up job. I was home the whole time, so would have been aware of any goofing off. There was definitely none of that. At completion, they cleaned up the site.

Went very well. We discussed the problem over he phone, and then Shawn book an appointment to view the problem. He sent an e-mail confirmation which was helpful. On the day of the initial appointment, Shawn showed up on time and conducted an estimate. He then was flexible as to the scheduling of the work. Shawn and crew returned on time (once again) and completed all the work, to our satisfaction. Shawn is very nice and professional, and they are reasonably priced. I would certainly use Southern Home Services again.

He was very polite in setting up the appointment and emailing to confirm. He came to the appointment and never called back with an estimate. I followed-up and no response. Even a response of "not going to be able to do the work" would have been better. I was very disappointed.

Didn't leave a mess, punctual, easy to work with and did more than what I asked him to do.

Shawn arrived on time and was very pleasant. He discussed shingle options, showed me his portfolio and insurance certificate, and got up on the roof to look around. He was up there for about 15 minutes, and when he came back down, he told me that my current roof was in good shape and would last probably two more years before I started having any problems. He gave me a quote for the gutters, but he told me that they would be quite expensive and that I would be better off just getting a gutter cleaning service to come out and clean mine regularly. It was amazing to meet someone who is in the business of replacing roofs and selling gutters but who was so honest with me about my options. Based on his advice, I decided to wait on the roof (and not replace the gutters). When I am ready to move forward, however, he will probably be the only contractor I call. I received one other estimate (with far less personal service) and it was $1,000 more than his was.

Took their time to do the job completely (did not rush). I highly recommend them. Thanks for doing a good job.

Rob Drumm did a great job! Came across as personable & honest. He arrived when he said he would, he always called before he showed up, he returned phone calls, he did what he said he would. He did good work - quickly and at a reasonable cost.

They were very prompt, friendly and professional. Would use them again in a heartbeat.

Shawn arrived at our appointment on time and took his time to talk with us about what we wanted. I mentioned that I had heard about options for adding some light upstairs and he went into the attic to see what could be done. We decided not to pursue it, based on his feedback. Shawn and his project manager kept us informed as to when the work would be done, what time the crew would arrive, etc. They called the night before to tell us that we should not park in the driveway to be sure we wouldn't be blocked in when the dumpster was delivered. The crew did not rush through the job, taking almost four days to complete it. They were courteous and thorough, and completely cleaned up the property when they were finished. The only negative was that they didn't come one day because it looked like rain and nobody called to let me know. Shawn was very apologetic, and I would not let that cloud our otherwise great experience with SHS.

The job was done impeccably. I was very impressed how efficient and professional the siding and the gutters were installed. Shawn and Clinton were wonderful and I was tickled pink about the price. I'm still smiling. Great job, thanks to all the guys!

In all my years of having home improvement projects done, I have not experienced dealing with a nicer and more honest and conscientious contractor than Shawn Kalgren of Southern Home Services. Shawn and his crew take the extra steps needed to be sure that their work is top quality from the general installation of the roof to every detail in the finishing process. You can depend on Southern Home Services to use only those materials in the installation and in the detail work that they know will give you the best performance from your new roof whereas some other contractors will cut corners in this part. Southern Home Services may be a younger company and may not have been in business as long as some other companies but you should not hesitate using them because Shawn and his crew are well experienced and will give you nothing but a top notch job. I also would like to commend Shawn for his promptness in returning my calls to answer all questions during the installation process.

It was a real pleasure working with Shawn. Our home is mostly brick with some old Masonite here and there. Shawn s team did a very good job of applying vinyl shakes and siding over the Masonite and adding vinyl clad aluminum to the soffits, frieze boards, etc. He had extra shakes, so he applied them to other areas in front which really tied together everything nicely. Rotted wood was replaced and the gutters were cleaned. When finished, Shawn encouraged us to look over everything and write up a punch list of anything that needed attention. He quickly took care of these items plus two more we didn t notice. When we asked Shawn for his opinion on how to clean our faded vinyl shutters, he volunteered to paint them at no additional cost. All we had to do was provide the paint. In my opinion, our money was well spent. If you see Shawn, be sure to congratulate him. His wife is expecting their first child in March, 2008.

Great! Responded quickly, gave me a detailed proposal and they came when they said they would. Everyone I dealt with were very courteous and professional. After they completed the work (on schedule and on time), you couldn't even tell they had been here because they cleaned up after themselves!

Shawn returned my phone call in a timely measure. He was on time for appt. He was one of the 3 finalist for the job and was right in line with other estimates. I checked out some of his prior job sites and had no complaints about his work. He is very professional and knowledgeable. He is very easy to talk to and does not pressure for the sell. The only reason he wasn't chosen was due to the fact that some of my friends had used one of the other companies and had liked his work.

I couldn't be more pleased with my experience with Southern Home Services. I reached out to Shawn after seeing their reports on the list and they lived up to expectations. He was very prompt in getting back to me with an estimate that came in more than $2000 cheaper than the other roofing company I requested an estimate from. We scheduled the service for 2 weeks after accepting the bid. They finished the work in the 4 days that they promised even though temperatures were near 100 degrees. One of the most impressive things was that they cleaned up every day and when they were done there was no indication that I had just had contractors on my property doing this type of work. Shawn was great to work with and his staff is also very professional and courteous. Both Shawn and his supervisor continued to check in while the work was being done to make sure we were happy. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
