I had an extremely positive experience with Southern Home Services. Shawn was a pleasure to deal with. When he came to examine my house for the quote, it was clear he really knew what he was doing. I had planned on replacing my siding myself at one time so I had read through all of the Hardi literature. He was the only individual I received a quote from who clearly knew, understood and could quote the manufacturers recommended installation instructions. Shawn was very patient with me while I gathered quotes and decided exactly what I needed. We emailed back and forth for probably 2 or 3 weeks. He provided samples of materials and colors wherever possible so I knew exactly what I was getting. Every product that he recommended was a quality product by a good company. And even when there were decisions he could not make for me (like picking the style of dentil moulding) he answered any questions I had and provided great advice. In the end, I was very comfortable with the contract and felt he would deliver exactly what I wanted. His price was in line with other quotes I received. The appropriate building permit was applied for. The crew was extremely courteous and neat. They showed up when they said they would. They worked quickly and with phenomenal skill and attention to detail. When any questions came up, they called me immediately. They offered suggestions for resolving the issue and their suggestions were always well thought out. All of the work turned out absolutely beautiful. Tiny details that I would have never thought about were handled and the end result is a pleasure to behold. When they finished, my yard was clean. The inspection passed the first time. Even the company they used to deliver and remove the construction dumpster was very professional. The gentleman loaded the dumpster onto his truck and then actually spent 10 minutes or so sweeping every last tiny piece of construction debris off of my driveway. I would absolutely use this company again. I could not ask for better service.

SHS did a great job! We started working with Shawn by getting the estimate. Shawn showed up on a rainy day, and while he did not get up on the roof, he was able to get some visuals from the ground, and we provided him with some specifications from our adjuster. Shawn was able to provide us with an estimate within 2-3 days, and sent it to us by email. Within another 2-3 days, we made our decision to contract with SHS, and we made contact with Shawn. He mentioned they were about 5-6 weeks out on their jobs at that time. We had a special situation which would have made October 26th an ideal date for us to get the job done, which was only about 3 weeks out. Shawn said he would see what he might be able to do and would keep us at the front of the list in case of any reschedules. Robert from SHS contacted us on October 20th and said they would be able to do our job on October 26th and they would be delivering the materials on October 25th. The crew showed up around 7:30am on October 26th and were done just after noon. Robert came by once around 10:30am to check on their progress and promised to be back later in the day after the job was completed. Scheduling difficulties prevented him from coming back that day. The crew were very professional, worked fast and cleaned up their mess as they went. We only found one or two nails in the grass, and none in the driveway or road. Robert did come back on the following Saturday for a quick walk around and to deliver the invoice. We were very pleased with the quality of work and the service provided. We have already recommended SHS to a neighbor investigating having her roof replaced. And we are considering hiring SHS in the spring to replace our gutters.

We contacted Southern Home Services because of its good ratings on Angie's List and set up an appointment for an estimate. Robert Drum, Project Manager, came by as scheduled to do an estimate and provided his business card. He spent 10 minutes with me going over the work that needed to be done, promised to contact me with an estimate, and then never called us back. Also gave him our email address and requested a written quote. Never emailed us either. We were quite disappointed by their lack of professionalism. This was the first time we used Angie's List to obtain a service referral. We have since had the necessary work done by another contractor, and the scope of work exceeded what was originally contemplated.

He was on time and very professional. After we discussed that State Farm had already paid me for repairs and that I had other estimates, he went on the roof. While up there he said that he "hated to throw good shingles in the dump". He said that what damage I had appeared to be normal from installing the siding etc from when the house was built in 2008. He said there may be a few shingles that may have dents from the hail but if it were his roof, he would bank the insurance money and not worry about it. He said that it may have shorten the life span of the 30 year roof by at most 4 years. I told him to come on down and don't bother writing up the estimate. I wondered why no one in my neighborhood had done any roof repairs...they didn't need any! He said that he had seen this before where State Farm had been generous in their evaluation-which made me glad I was with them. I am keeping his business card because when I or anyone I know needs a roof, I will be using Shawn. I appreciate his honesty and professionalism.

The house looked terrible because of the extensive damage caused by the vinyl installation 30 years ago. Southern Home Services did an outstanding job repairing all. The job was extensive and detail heavy. They were able to do detail work I thought impossible to do without tearing out all the siding. I recommend them highly.

Shawn was very punctual and professional with our estimate meeting and every time we corresponded. He left samples of roof shingles to select from and also was familiar with what my HOA would accept. He had very good recommendations on which shingle 30, 40, 50 yr to buy since I was interested in something longer lasting than a 30 yr. It was so nice to solicit rather than be solicited as I had been for the last 2 years by all kinds of people wanting to reroof my house. S&H had guys at my house at 6:45AM to start the job and we're completed by 5:30PM that day - they were gone before I came home from work. I've seen other roofers work on my neighbors houses well into dark! So I was very pleased at how they came in early and got the job done. The roof looks great! They had tarps covering my landscaping all around the house and were very careful. The roof looks great!

From estimate to final walk through I cannot speak highly enough of owner Shawn Kalgren. He spent a significant amount of time with me, and answered all my questions. Shawn is always thorough, polite, and professional. During our roof installation, issues arose regarding the quality of the installation crews workmanship, as well as a lack of communication on the part of the project manager. I contacted Shawn, with my concerns, and he responded with immediate action. Shawn went above and beyond to correct and rectify all my and my husband's concerns, and from that point on, Shawn personally over saw the project. He even took the time to check in with us each day and see how things were going. Shawn is a man of his word and will see the job through to the end to make sure it is done right. I will not hesitate to use Southern Home Services again in the future.

They did an excellent job, and I was very pleased with their service. They were very knowledgeable, and they gave us great advice on which colors to pick out.

I called for a whole-house roof estimate on Sept. 2, and left a message. I got a call back Sept. 6. We talked about the job and set an appointment for an estimate on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. I took time off of work to be there. The guy never showed and never called as of the Sept. 20 date of this review. I would not do business with a company that is this disorganized and disrespectful of its customers.

Best experience from a contractor I've had in a long time other than our pool. These guys were professional, took extra care of my landscaping and had it completed in a couple days with a crew they've worked with for years so no surprises. they were the best price, and had the best references out of everyone. The roof is quite large and hand drove all the nails and only found 3 after searching my property when they left. covered my pool and took extra special care of removing the old roof. I couldn't believe how good it looked and they even threw in free gutter guards for me and painted my white exhaust pipes to math the brown on the rest of the house. i couldn't believe how awesome of a job and professional these guys were. Rob also had some great contacts for other projects too! They also took my AMEX which allowed me to get points on my card too! :)

We wanted someone to check our roof for storm damage after all the hail this year. I was worried that many roofers would tell us we did need new shingles, knowing that we'd file an insurance claim for it anyway. We called SHS because, based on previous experience with Shawn, I felt that we would get an honest answer. Shawn was on time and confirmed that we did NOT need a new roof and there was no charge for the inspection. We will be definitely calling SHS again for future contracting needs.

Nicest company ever worked. Did a great job. My son said, he couldn't believe what a good job they did. Very nice gentlemen, always on time and very professional. Worked hard in 95-100 degree heat, without complaint.

We really liked him. He said that we didn't need a new roof, which was very unusual for a roofer, who normally would try to sell us a new roof. He was very personable and he was on time. He was polite and neat. He did what he said he was going to do. He appeared to be very honest and forthright. We would highly recommend him. We would absolutely use him in the future.

After a hail storm earlier this year, many neighbors had their roofs replaced. Since I had replaced mine about 4 years earlier, I wasn't look to have insurance replace a roof at the end of its life. But when it became apparent that I was only one of a handful in my neighborhood, I chose to have it inspected. SHS came out and inspected the roof and indicated the previous installer had done good work and there was no sign of damage, due to my newer shingles providing greater protection. They didn't charge me and were very professional. I would recommend them.

The problem was when I returned home and did a inspection for myself they had left a wires exposed that used to be part of a actic fan, I also found a hole in the new plywood that they had installed. I called SHS and they came out to inspect it. Shawn apologized for the work and promised that the roof would be completely inspected and repaired again at no cost to me. They came out and removed the damaged piece of plywood they had installed along with an additional 4 pieces of roofing that they did not orginally replace. This work was completed within 3 days of the orginal roof replacement.Overall the job was well done however had I not inspected the roof myself no one at SHS would have said anything about the damaged new roofing that was installed or the exposed hot wires that were simply hanging in my attic. I was promised that Shawn or his manager would be present all day during the roof installation. Instead all I received was a crew that only one person spoke some English and no manager/owner was present.They did fix the problems with the roof as promised with no extra cost to me as promised. Had Shawn been present for the installation I believe that I would not have had the problems I did. Shawn was very upset about the work and did not deny the poor workmanship present. All materials and time was covered by the crew and Shawn's manager was present for the entire redo. Shawn did hire a licensed electrician to come out and secure the wires into a electrical box and tape them off as the power to that fan also supplies power for the upstairs lighting. I think SHS is a good company and Shawn is a good man however the overall rating I would give is a B, just a little effort by Shawn's employees would have made this a much better installation the first time, the repaired work was excellant.

I previoously used SHS around 7 years ago to replace the roof on my 1920 Craftsmen bungalow. They did a terrific job, removing 2 previous shingle layers and repairing / replacing any bad wood they found. The crew was prompt to arrive, worked hard through completion, was careful to avoid harming the shrubbery and left the yard impeccably clean when they finished up the job. Due to that good experience, I used SHS a few years later to renovate my front porch. Their master carpenter did a beautiful job creating tapered columns, fence rails and installing a new mahogany front door. Everything came out beautiful and looks like original construction.On June 5 a tree fell across our house during a storm and I left Shawn a phone message that evening. He contacted me within hours and by mid-morning the next day following tree removal, his carpenter arrived to assess the damage and to put temporary cover over the roof to weatherproof it. The following day his team was on site and beginning repairs that would continue through August 1, 2011. We opted to remove the aluminum siding that was put onto the house in the 80's by the previous owner, and to restore the original 1920 cedar shake underneath. Shawn's professional staff had to replace all original window and foundation drip moldings along with many of the decorative moldings, as these were removed to facilitate the siding installation. They removed all of the damaged and cracked cedar shakes and replaced them with new shakes. Our 2 chimneys were destroyed and had to be replaced. Shawn's mason,; Doug and his crew rebuilt the chimneys in a couple of days and they look better than the originals. Several windows were destroyed, and a total of 10 new windows were installed. We had Shawn replace the masonite siding on our garage with pine siding and cedar shake gable accent. The garage turned out beautifully with the masterful work of Kelly and his helpers. We value our relationship with Shawn Kalgren and SHS and would highly recommend them to anyone. He is professional, reliable, reasonably priced and employs a very dedicated and talented crew of craftsman.

Southern Home Services performed the work on time and on budget. They talked with my tenant prior to starting the work and provided an opportunity for me to evaluate the work prior to payment. I chose this company based on their reputation and I wasn't disappointed. If I have another issue somewhere else, I would use them again!

Very well. We sustained extensive roof damage as a result of the April 9th hail storm in Fort Mill SC. Almost immediately the "door knockers" begin to show up making all kinds of promises about doing the work for whatever the insurance company would pay. Having been involved in home construction myself I knew enough to look for a local company to do the work. Most of the local companies were so overwhelmed with jobs it was all they could do to simply supply an estimate. On Angie's list recommendation I called Shawn at SHS. They went above and beyond my expectations. Always prompt, courteous, and thorough, they provided a competitive estimate. He even spent time with the insurance adjuster to help us negotiate a fair settlement on the claim. Was able to contact them via email, and get documents electronically, saved both time and effort. They were even able to expedite the job, knowing that we had to be out of town on the original schedule date. The supervisor, Robert, was very professional and the crew did a great job with installation and cleanup. I have recommended SHS to others. Thanks SHS

Shawn quickly responded to my request for an estimate, and left me shingle samples to consider. I also requested and received an estimate to do the same job with tin/metal roofing. In the end decided on high end shingles (metal was about 2.5 times as much). One major advantage with SHS is that they can do more than just roofing, so they were able to handle installing the gutters and fixing the roof joist. The entire job was done between the time I left for work and the time I got home. Excellent work, total cleanup and I wasn't invoiced until the job was completed and I was happy. An excellent experience, and I certainly will call Shawn and SHS anytime I need home repair or remodeling of any kind.

This company was a pleasure to deal with. They have very detailed workmanship.

Their initial inspection and work with our insurance agent was professional. Rob worked with us and answered all of our numerous questions before, during, and after the work. This is an area in which SHS really excelled, the provided us with information. They scheduled the work and replaced the roof in short order with a large crew in one half day. The work was high quality and they left the work site clean. The price was comparable with three other quotes, falling near the middle. I like how they hand nailed, looked out for plywood that needed to be replaced, and used lead collars on fittings that do not degrade like the rubber ones. Their roof vents to not extend to the end of the roofline like H&S, but they do not need to in order to function. Our one concern was with a furnace exhaust pipe. While they replaced our hot water heater exhaust pipe and fittings, they were unable to replace the furnace, saying that they wanted a plumber to perform the work. Later, when they sent out the plumber, the plumber said that he did not want to damage the new roof and said that a roof should do it. Hmmm. In the end, I replaced the hot water heater ten months later and with that the exhaust. Concerned that the HHAC contracted roofer had not supported the roof warranty, I called SHS the day the work was being done. Rob, while still on vacation, immediately called me back and advised me and then sent out a crew ASAP to redo to work and bring it up to our roof warrant quality. One minor hiccup, but I am using them again for fascia/trim work now.

SHS and specifically Shawn Kalgren was great to work with. I selected 3 siding contractors from Angie's list to provide estimates. Of the three, Shawn was the first to respond and came out almost immediately to talk with me and understand the work. He showed up exactly when he said he would and provided the estimate exactly when he said he would. The quality of his estimate and his approach was more than enough for me to award the job to him. The work started approximately 10 days after the award and once again, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of work, the efficiency of the effort and the respect the workers showed for the property and me personally. Throughout the project, we came across a number of issues outside the original scope and they were handled without question. I can honestly say in all of my years of contracting for work on my house, this is far and away the best experience I have ever had. I am an engineer by profession and I could find nothing to question about their approach. I would recommend SHS to anyone in an unqualified manner.

The first time that the work was done, it was not done very professionally; the siding had too many nails in it. I did contact them; there were several times that I called, and I did not get a response right away. However, they came out, redid the work and took care of the problem. This was the first time that I used them, and their price was very good. I would use them again in the future if necessary.

The insurance company is evaluating to replace the entire roofing and SHS would get the job. They were outstanding in the way they presented themselves. They were professional. They were very competitive. The quality is good as it doesn’t leak anymore. They responded very well in terms of getting out for the other and then when I mentioned that I needed to have it fixed by a certain date because I had the leak, they really jumped forward and got it done. Their professionalism was excellent. This is far and away the most professional group of people I’ve worked with in the working industry.
