Bob Lubbers is a great arborist and he cares about preserving trees. He went to extra efforts to do the best job for the trees and was very easy to work with throughout the project. I obtained 3 quotes and Piedmont Tree beat the competition on price, service and timeliness. Bob responded within an hour on every correspondence. His team was very thorough and provided a certificate of insurance for the project. They were able to take care of the job within a couple weeks. When the first appointment was canceled due to a storm, Bob rescheduled the next week. His team arrived promptly to start the work. They worked a full day and cleaned up all debris. I would highly recommend Piedmont Tree to anyone looking for high quality work, excellent and friendly service and a competitive price.
Description of Work: Removed a large oak tree and pruned a large pecan tree in back yard. Also removed some smaller trees at no extra charge.

After finding termites in our living Tulip Poplar last October, we were very alarmed. We called this service and Bob called back promptly, and came out the next day to take a look at the tree. He told me the tree could be saved with a termite treatment, and also recommended we get the tree properly pruned. He looked at all the old & large trees in our yard, and recommended we prune them all. We haven't had this done in 10+ years of living here, and I agreed we should do this for the health of our trees. He also recommended banding our oaks, which again, I agreed to. He gave me an estimate of around $5,000 for all the work. I told him I wanted to speak with my husband. I called back a day or two later and told him we both wanted to move forward, he told me we needed to wait until the leaves dropped in order to prune properly. I asked him about splitting up the services, so we could get the termites treated immediately and also band the oaks, since he told us that needed to be done in the next couple of weeks to be effective. He said that would be $300-$500 and he could split it up. Told him I would call back after speaking to my husband - when I called back (same day), got his voice mail so I left him a message telling him we wanted this done ASAP. Over two weeks later when we hadn't heard anything, I called again and got him on the phone. He told me he "didn't realize I wanted a call back" and that I was "on the schedule" and they should be out in a couple of weeks when the rain cleared up. He also said he would call closer to the date. We waited and waited, approximately 3 more weeks. The time for banding had already passed and we were worried about the termites. We also didn't have a "real" quote from him with a breakdown of the services, so I called again and got his voice mail. I left a message asking again about the termite treatment and moving forward with that immediately; and also asked for a written quote with a breakdown of services to ensure we knew what we were getting and how much it would be. It is now late February and we never heard another word from Bob - we are sorely disappointed. We were willing to spend $5,000+ and after an fantastic initial meeting and prompt responses from me, they just apparently are too busy or just don't care. As much as I liked Bob and what he had to say, I will not do business with a company that doesn't honor their "schedule" - call back and give us any information or provide a written quote with exactly the services detailed. Very unprofessional.
Description of Work: I initially contacted this provider regarding a living Tulip Poplar that was infested with termites. We additionally wanted our oaks banded and all of our very large, old trees pruned.

Thank you very much for your review Mrs [Member Name Removed]. Neither you or anyone should have to put up with that kind of service, you were right and we were wrong. Whether its 5000 or $500 it makes no difference. We typically send quotes by email but will also write one up on site. I'm not exactly sure what happened with you and scheduling 6 months ago but something didn't work out. For that I apologize. I have left several messages and would love to rectify if not too late. You are truly 1 in 5000 clients that I remember that this has happened to. We are typically very punctual on day and time of arrival. Your review has helped us grow as a company and for that I really appreciate it. Bob L. Piedmont Tree Experts

Great. Bob Lubbers was great to work with. I have a huge black walnut tree that I was concerned about limbs breaking and falling. Bob scheduled me two days after I called and arrived when he said he would. He made a thorough examination of the tree and decided the tree was very healthy and did not need anything. I am very thankful for him telling the truth. He did not charge me anything. He even looked at the other trees on the property and said none of them needed anything either. Bob is very personable and easy to talk to. I would definitely recommend Piedmont Tree Experts to anyone.
Description of Work: Bob Lubbers examined about 10 trees on my property and was honest enough to say that they were all healthy trees and did not need anything. This speaks volumes to me. I was very impressed with his honesty. He did not charge me anything for his time or gas. He called me the same day to give me the good report which helped me have a more restful weekend.

Thank you very much for the kind words. It doesn't happen everyday, but at least a couple times a week we have the opportunity to share great tree news. In your case it was 100% that the trees didn't need anything, so we were truly lucky to be able to share that great news with you. Integrity is the name of the game in arboriculture. Whatever town your trees may reside in, please find an honest arborist for your tree care needs. Always, as such in this case, get several opinions from Certified Arborists. Bob L.

We needed to have a very large oak tree removed from our house after Hurricane Joaquin dropped it right on top of our chimney. The way that our house and the tree are sited, with a stream running past it, and a hill, and a gorgeous Japanese Maple that we hoped would not be damaged, it was a very tricky job. Bob came in and assessed what would be the best way to remove the giant tree while doing minimal damage to anything else around it, and was very thorough in explaining just how they were going to accomplish that. It was really quite a spectacle to see how they used nearby large trees to rig up a support system for the fallen trunk to hold it in place while the dismantled it piece by piece. Our neighbors kindly gave permission for their trees to be used for support, and Bob and his son Cody took good care of them, keeping our relationship with our nice neighbors! Our insurance company's reps came by just as they were starting to set up the rigging to support the tree, and the insurance adjustors were certain that the tree could not be removed without a crane. Bob explained to them why a crane would not only be more costly by a few thousand dollars, but would not even be practical because the ground next to the stream bed would not safely support the weight of the crane's outriggers. I can only imagine how disastrous it could have been if we had used a company that had not thought of that possibility and had tried to do the job with a crane. I initially thought that the price quote was expensive, but even the insurance company thought it was going to be higher, and when the insurance company is paying out and they think the quote is reasonable, it's probably pretty darn reasonable. The job took 2 1/2 days from the original rigging set-up to final removal of all of the debris, and Bob and Cody were a pleasure to be around throughout. Not only did the Japanese Maple come out unscathed, but even the ferns planted below it were not harmed. The bucket truck that they used to access the roof branches and the higher parts of the trunk was parked very snugly against the Maple, but none of its branches were damaged at all. Frankly, I don't know how they did it, but they obviously take great care in doing a good job. The only evidence that they were even here are a few muddy tire tracks on the lawn, which of course are unavoidable, and the fact that the area of the yard where they worked is cleaner and more free of fallen leaves than the rest of the yard. We would not hesitate to use this company again and will definitely recommend them to any neighbors who need an arborist in the future.
Description of Work: Removed a large (almost 100 ft.) Red Oak tree that had fallen on our house during a storm and was precariously positioned on top of our chimney. Removed all branches and logs, cleaned up leaves and other debris from the roof and yard.

Told him he wasn't the right person for the job
Description of Work: Contacted about removing a tree and got questioned about our motives. He asked what was wrong with the tree, are we trying to grow grass, etc. if you don't want to remove trees you need to update your advertising. At the very least update it to say you'll question the homeowners motives. And get someone with some customer service skills to answer your phone, whomever I talked with was seriously lacking them

This review is based on a 15 second phone call. When told that your tree needs to come down we simply ask, "What seems to be wrong with it?" When you say nothing and I ask "Why do you want to take it down then?" After two simple questions you tell me that I'm not the right guy for the job, abruptly hang up and post a review saying that we don't like to cut trees down and you received poor customer service is untrue on both counts. We absolutely love to cut trees down, but we also love to take care of trees. These are typical questions that your arborist should be asking you. If he or she doesn't, then it may be time to find a new arborist. We have saved thousands of trees over the years that the customer thought needed to come down and have been thanked many times over. Honestly this is the first time I've ever seen a complaint about our customer service. We probably see 4 - 10 trees a week that someone thinks needs to come down, when all it needs is maintenence. Most people appreciate the fact that they don't have to take their tree down, unless necessary, and it saves them thousands of dollars. Trees are vital to healthy neighborhoods and like the old saying," Take a deep breath and thank a tree for it" really has alot of substance. (No pun intended) I apologize if you felt like you got poor customer service. That was not my intentions. We ask those same questions to every call for tree removal because spending money on removal is always the last resort. I could have made a lot more money over the years cutting every tree down that was requested, but we have to have a moral compass. Thanks for reading this comment. Best of luck on your tree care needs. Bob Lubbers, Piedmont Tree Experts

I contacted Bob from all the positive reviews from Angie's List. Told him I wanted my Pear Tree trimmed and cleaned up. He stopped by the house, assessed the job and called me with a quote. Unknown to him he came under my budget so I asked him to include my neighbors limbs that were hanging over in my lawn too. He quoted me $550.00 for everything and he cleaned up after himself as well. He made a huge difference in the view from the street. House, yard and over all esthetics look fantastic!

Bob and his two assistants arrived when he said they would. They worked very efficiently and carefully. They removed the three trees and ground the stumps. They had a truck with a chipper and cleaned as they worked. When they finished there were no remnants of the trees left and the area where they had been removed was cleared and there was a soft mound covering the holes where the trees had been. We talked to Bob about possibilities for replacement tree(s) which we expect to contact him to plant at the appropriate time. In each of our three experiences with Piedmont Tree Experts, we have been totally pleased and feel that charges are very fair.
Description of Work: We contacted Bob earlier in July regarding trimming a tree which was encroaching on the roof of our house. When I called, I left a message . He called back very promptly saying he was on vacation but he wanted to let us know that he received our message and would call as soon as he returned home and schedule an appointment--which he did. He came for a consultation and we then decided that we wanted him to remove three trees which we really didn't like much and he agreed with us that they could become problematic. This was totally our decision. There is never any pressure from Bob to do anything. He just provides us with what we consider very good advice and we decide what we want to do. This is the third job that he has done for us and we very much appreciate his expertise and professionalism. We find him a very pleasant person with whom to deal. We contacted him initially based on reviews that we read on Angie's List.

Very well. Bob loves his job and is very capable of discussing what he is doing and why he is doing it. I always do this before winter to prevent tree damage to the house and also to let more sun into our yard. Bob never cuts anything unless there is a good reason for it.

Highly recommend Bob. He is a true professional, knowledgeable Arborist and experienced tree climber, good for his word, punctual, calls ahead, and safe. Bob was a pleasure to work with, and he exudes loving what he does. He also has ALL the equipment to do any type of tree work. He was decisive on what trees should go and what trees should stay. If your project has multiple aspects I would recommend as with any contractor getting a written estimate so both parties know what is to be expected in time and cost. Only concern was communicating location of equipment on property, for lawn & sprinklers etc. Will use again.

Originally I had given Piedmont tree an A rating and I was/am satisfied with their work to remove a large sweet gum tree and do some clean up on another tree in some distress due to the driveway poured over part of its root system. It's entirely possible my experience is simply an anomaly as part of my experience was perfectly satisfactory, but overall I have to revise my rating rather significantly. In order to provide context for this update I have to take a step back and note that when I had originally reached out to Bob back in early July I had explained that I was having a fence put up in early August and I had one tree, in particular, that I was concerned about given its proximity to the planned fenceline. When Bob came out, even though he acknowledged that the tree was essentially dead, he insisted it would not pose a ?threat? and when I kept insisting ?are you sure??, he said something to the effect that it would be years before the tree would need to be addressed. Having grown up in Michigan in a rural setting, I have a pretty decent idea of tree health, but I figured a NC arborist would certainly know better than I since I?m rather new to the area. He recommended I have a large sweet gum removed from proximity of the fence line instead, and that was the service he provided on 7/28 and which was previously rated and that portion was indeed worthy of the original A rating. Imagine my surprise and annoyance when I looked out my window on Tuesday, 8/4, exactly a week later, and saw that the original tree in question had indeed fallen over into the back yard on a perfectly still morning between 5:00 and 7:30 am (I know because those were the times I took the dog out). I called Bob, who did return my call saying he would stop by and take a look later that morning. He came out sometime between 3 and 4 and looked at the tree and stated nothing like this had ever happened. Since I had already written my positive review on Angie?s List, he said they would come back out and take care of the tree for free. Mind you, I?m fortunate to have a treed lot and we agreed it would be fine to just pick up/push the trunk back into the wooded area out of the way of the fence line. I wasn?t insisting it be cut up, hauled away, etc. That conversation was on a Tuesday and I again very plainly stated to Bob that my fence was being installed that next week, so I didn?t care what day he took care of it as long as it was done by week?s end so it didn?t impact my fence installation. He acknowledged this statement without offering a day for scheduling (admittedly not an issue for me as I didn?t need to be there and had clearly noted the deadline). By week?s end, I hadn?t heard from Bob and the tree was still lying in the fenceline. I hadn?t gotten a day from the fence company yet either, so I planned to follow up with Bob on Monday morning. As it happened, my fence contractor showed up Monday morning before 8:30 to do the install. Plug for Matthews Fence, they were awesome and cut the limb that was most at issue. I was supposed to have a gate installed at that place in the fenceline per my HOA approved plan and ended up having to move it. Hopefully, that never turns out to be an issue? In fact, I haven?t heard from Bob since that conversation Tuesday, 8/4. ?Forgetting? doesn?t seem a plausible excuse, and any other reason at least warrants a phone call. Bottom line, unfortunately I cannot recommend Piedmont Tree based on their knowledge of tree health, or their overall customer service.

Bob promptly returned all calls, stopped by for consultation and estimate, and the work was done on schedule the next week, perfectly in my opinion. He and his three staff members could not have been more professional, courteous, and careful. The quality of work is first-rate and was completed in good time. They used very quiet electric saws and hand saws, so the only noise was at the conclusion of the project during the time the chipper was in use. All the limbs and debris were removed and the driveway, walkways, and yard were cleaned up and left in excellent condition.Bob is a perfectionist in his arboreal artistry, and that extends through his staff members as well !

I initially left a message for Bob about getting a quote for the work. Bob was great about calling back and leaving messages letting me know he was trying to get in touch with me. He wasn't able to come out same day to take a look at the job, but would call me the day before he came out. This ended up being about 3-4 days after we spoke initially. This was ok with me as I was in the process of getting quotes. Once Bob came out, he called again to let me know what he'd seen, what he recommended for work and went into great detail about his recommendations. He answered all of my questions, specifically about one tree which overhung the roof of my house. Once I decided to proceed with Piedmont Tree, Bob let me know he had about 2 weeks' worth of work in front of me. He put me on his list and again told me he'd call me the day before he intended to come out and do the work, which he did on a Thursday. The work was done on a Friday while I was at work. The actual work: there are three very large oak trees lined up down my driveway along the property line. One overhangs my house and they all overhang the power lines that lead to my house. The trees are now at least 20 feet from the roof of my house and above the power lines. They look very tidy, but natural and are shaped to grow around my house. They still offer some shade, but no longer overhang my house. My driveway was cleaner than when I left for work that morning and there was no debris anywhere in my driveway or yard. Bob and his crew showed up to pick up one of their trucks a few minutes after I got home from work. He took his time explaining to me what he'd done and pointed out a few specific areas of the trees that he'd done work to. He also took the time to give me a quote on another large tree in my backyard. The best thing about Piedmont Tree: Bob is great to work with. I've had a difficult time getting call backs from other potential providers and have even scheduled time off from work to be home for a quote and no one shows up. That is absolutely not the case with Piedmont Tree. Bob calls when he says he will call and shows up when he says he will show up. Bob even spoke to my neighbor to let them know he'd be working on the trees along the property line. He's a little more expensive than other tree companies, but the money is well worth the professionalism. Piedmont Tree is definitely my go-to tree company for ongoing tree service from here on out.

We used this service in the past and knew they would do a great job. Bob and his associate removed the trees and cleaned up the yard thoroughly after they finished. We neglected to move a bird feeder and birdbath prior to their coming out to do the work. They carefully removed the bird feeder from a tree that was to be cut and set it aside. They also moved the birdbath out of the way. After the work was done, they rehung the bird feeder and moved the birdbath back into place. Now that's great service!

We couldn't have asked for or received better service. Not only did Bob go out of his way to help us in our time of need, he did it with a smile. Clean up was fabulous. I also had several small plants scattered around the area and they managed to work around them and avoid damaging them. We plan on having them back out to do some additional maintenance work in the near future. One of the other things they did while they were here was clean up our Red Bud. At first, there were so many branches on the ground I thought there was a mistake and they were taking it down. But when they finished, it looked great. I can't wait to see how good it looks when it blooms this year. We also had a tree that we were going back and forth on with removal. They were very patient with us during the process. In the end, we elected to have it removed and were pleased with the results. I want to add that we had 3 other companies give us estimates before Piedmont Tree Experts. The first didn't even notice the tree with the rotten stump. And it fell literally ~3 weeks after we got the first estimate. That's how bad ended up being. The second person brought the rotten-stump tree to our attention, but it was beyond his level of expertise to remove. (This was a BIG tree). The third was qualified but encouraged us to get another estimate because he didn't really like to work the north side of Charlotte. His add on Angie's List said 'Charlotte & surrounding area", but really should be 'Ft. Mill and surrounding area'. I am very pleased with Piedmont Tree Experts and will definitely be using them again.
Description of Work: Bob to the rescue! We were in the process of getting estimates for a tree than needed to come down due to a rotten stump, a tree that outgrew its space, and pruning of several other trees. Bob was the last one we spoke with and a few days later, the rotten-stump tree ended up falling down. Before it fell all the way, though, it fell half-way onto another tree. Bob came over at ~5 pm that day to re-evaluate the situation. If I could give him an A+++ for responsiveness, I would! The tree fell the rest of the way overnight. We got very lucky in where it fell- inconvenient but no damage to anyone's home. Even though it was technically not an emergency anymore, Bob rearranged his schedule and got the tree removed (as well as all the other work we needed done). This was an enormous help to us because it allowed us to get our fence repaired (that the tree took out when it fell) that weekend. Our dog appreciated that more than anyone!

I contacted Robert Lubbers and Piedmont Tree Experts after I saw the numerous positive reviews on Angie's List. After leaving a message, I received a call back in approx. 30 minutes and we set a time the next day to meet at my home. Robert showed up (called before coming) as promised, reviewed the work to be done, answered my questions concerning the job and the company, and provided me a quotation for the work which was lower than a previous quote I had received. We agreed on proceeding with the job in 3 days, once I received their insurance information which was provided by the insurance company via e-mail promptly. On the agreed upon date, Piedmont called prior to coming to the property. Upon arrival, the crew professionally approached the job, was safety conscious, and completed the job within the indicated time frame. Over numerous years, I have contracted many service companies for a variety of reasons, but this experience would rank as a high performing AAA+++. I would highly recommend this company and will plan on using them again as needed.
Description of Work: Piedmont removed two large trees, one of which was dangerously leaning toward/near our fence and house and trimmed a tree which the branches were touching the roof of our home. The trees were cut and sectioned as promised without infringement on the neighbors property. The trimmed tree was left natural while cutting back the branches that touched our house. The clean up was excellent without any need for follow up by myself. The work was done as scheduled and within the time frame promised. Outstanding Job by Mr. Lubbers and his crew!

They came out and gave me an estimate. I had gotten two other estimates and theirs was the most expensive and most also the most thorough. I had asked for a copy of their insurance liability and workers comp info. I called three times, sent three emails and never received any of the insurance information. He sent me an email response telling me that he was withdrawing the bid to do the service for me. I would not use them again in the future and I absolutely would not recommend them to anyone. In the email he sent, he made it seem as though there was an issue with us receiving the estimate. We had received the estimate, we only wanted the insurance information. My email that I sent to him clearly referenced only the insurance information request, it said nothing about an issue with the estimate. There is nothing that this company can do to remedy the situation or change my opinion on the matter.

Response from Piedmont Tree Experts
I personally pride myself with the best customer service possible. Taking care of trees is my passion. I am thorough with my work and did see a few extra trees that needed attention. I am truly upset that this relationship did not work out. I try to treat all customers the way I want to be treated. As for the insurance, I was assured by the insurance company that the information was sent twice. In previous reviews, insurance has been provided.

Went very well. Fence was damaged during removal, and Piedmont repaired it at no cost. They also cut p the tree into fireplace-sized logs. I am considering using them again for tree crowning and removal.

Bob provided me his quote in writing on the spot and followed up with an email confirmation from his smart phone (very efficient). The insurance certificate we asked for was immediately provided in 2 days by his insurance agent. The 3 person crew was very professional. They all used the best equipment, hardhats and even had built in intercoms/walkie talkies built into their headset and hardhats. Trimming arborvitaes can be tricky for inexperienced service providers as if you cut too deeply you enter the "dead zone" and kill the tree. I'm a certified master gardener and watched them with interest and I never had to say anything as they knew exactly how much to cut and how much needed to be remain in order to keep the trees alive. I had much of the wood cut into 1.5 ft lengths for using in my firepit. They cleaned up all debris and you can barely tell anyone was here today. Might be a little more pricey than cut-rate tree servicers - but he knew what he was doing and it showed in the final result. VERY HAPPY !!
Description of Work: My yard borders a thick woodland area and requires tending to every few years. I had 6 Giant Arborvitae trimmed in width (volume) as well as cut down height-wise. I had a box elder and several smaller tulip poplars removed as they were invading some fruiting trees I am giving preference to. About 5 medium sized trees removed completely along with trimming on arborvitae.

They came out to give me a quote, and would only give me the estimate by word of mouth, and would not provide me with a written estimate or proof of insurance. He was very nice, and I would like to work with him, but I first need that written estimate and proof of insurance.

Response from Piedmont Tree Experts
First of all I would like to apologize. I take full responsibility for this situation. I have no problem providing the information requested. As a professional arborist that has been in business for over 25 years we are family owned. I had a family emergency that required my undivided attention, I know this is not a good excuse but this rarely happens.(maybe twice in 25 years) I have full intentions of rectifying and providing the information requested, if not too late to make sure all of my customers have excellent customer service.

This is the second time that we have called Piedmont for tree removal and trimming. As before, Bob responded promptly to our call, came and gave us an estimate, and said he would call to schedule when he could return to do the work. Because it was a small job, he was going to fit it into his schedule, which was fine with us. He called and returned in less than two weeks. We had to be away from home when he could come but we trusted him and did not feel the need to be there. When we returned home, the tree was gone, the limbs trimmed, and everything cleaned up perfectly. Bob is a very pleasant person to deal with and we are again as pleased as we can be with the work done. We highly recommend him.

Piedmont Tree came out to look over our property and access what tree work needed to be done. One of the reasons we called Piedmont Tree Experts was we have one tree that we wanted to decide to either take it down or just prune it as it is close to our home. We wanted the opinion of a certified arborist and Piedmont felt the tree was healthy and did not need to be removed. They recommended what work would keep the trees on our property looking good and structurally sound. We scheduled to have the work done in a few weeks and they came right on time as promised. We had six total trees trimmed/pruned. Piedmont gave us some suggestions for future work to consider on a few trees that were not part of this work to promote overall health and stability. All work was done very quietly (very quiet saws )and neatly. All debris was cleaned up and hauled away. They yard looked great!
Description of Work: We had several trees that needed pruning, many which were quite large. Two of the trees were large willow oaks that had not been cleaned out for several years. We also had two fairly large maples and a tall pine tree that needed normal pruning to keep healthy.

Bob and his crew performed tree removal for my mother-in-law this past summer. She loves this company. She decided to use them again to remove 1 or 2 more trees in front of her home and to trim numerous other trees throughout her yard. They worked at her home for 3 full days. She raved about the awesome job they performed! She told me that Bob and his crew were so personable, professional and that they don't quit until the job is done! She thanked me numerous times for finding Piedmont Tree Experts for her through Angie's List.

Bob came out to our house to give us an estimate. He was very thorough in answering our questions and made helpful suggestions. Work started a few days later and was completed in a timely manner. Bob and his crew were very professional and the quality of their work was very high. Very satisfied with their work. Looks great!
Description of Work: Cut down a tree. Removed several bushes and their stumps. Trimmed seven trees removing dead limbs, general shaping and other branches as requested. Cut back several crape myrtles. Removed all debris including blowing off concrete areas. Upon request, Bob left us with some of the wood chips.
