MICHAEL ANGELO'S PAINTING & HOME IMPROVEMENTS

My mother got this contractor's name from another contractor on Angie's List who was too busy to do the job. We initially had a new front entry door installed, which we were very happy with. JP, the person who did the job, is a master carpenter, and is about as meticulous as you can get. Based on that, we asked Michael Angelo's to give an estimate for the installation of kitchen cabinets, tile floor and trim work. A deposit check for $1000 was written on 14 January 2008 and another one for the trim work about the same time. A short time later Michael and Tim came to install the upper kitchen cabinets, during which time they drilled a hole into the gas line so work had to stop while the line was repaired and the gas company called. About this time JP's wife was having pregnancy complications and he was taking family leave to be home with her, so I was told since I liked his work so much, they would wait until JP was able to return to work before they came back to start on the floor. In the meantime, Tim told me to put out the tile sample for them to pick up so they could get the tile, but he never came and got it. I went on vacation with my mom in April and upon our return, we both made calls to Michael in an attempt to get the kitchen finished. Finally, I sent him an email, which he returned a week later, indicating that he was "about two weeks out" in scheduling. I asked him to contact me when he was ready to proceed with the work. Well, it's mid-August and I am still waiting. Emails have not been answered, phone calls have not been returned and my mother is freaking out, thinking she has been bilked by a contractor who has literally taken the money and run. Additionally, when Tim was working on the gas line, he walked off with my son's Mag Lite and has yet to return it.

I found Mike's company through Angie's List as well as through a recommendation from the buyers agent on my house. When I talked to Mike and his cabinet person about what I needed, they were very good about listening to my description of what I wanted and offering suggestions to improve on it. But I appreciated that Mike didn't try to talk me into a lot of "bells and whistles" than I didn't need. His estimate was prompt and reasonable, and since I needed to minimize the time I took off from work, he made an effort to work around my schedule. After the weather didn't cooperate for them to do some of the initial work on site, his crew built the units off site. Then they did the actual installation very quickly, accommodating the boxes and furniture that were still in the room. The bookshelf wall (now completely filled with books!) is both sturdy and attractive. I'm already planning on some projects next year and Mike will be the first person I call for an estimate.
