Everything was good and I would use them again for my electrical needs.
Description of Work: I used the services of Maccallum's Electrical Service about a year and a half ago. I had had a wire with a shuttle for my lamppost lifted and that was causing shorting in the electricity and other places.

We originally found Scott Mac Callum via Angie's List in 2006. We were very happy with the work that he previously performed (see previous report) and therefore decided to call him again. I called Scott and he promptly returned my phone call that same afternoon. He came over the following day to take a look at what we wanted done and provided his expert opinion. The very next day he provided me with a written estimate. Once I approved the estimate, he purchased all of the materials and was able to start the work two days later. During the installation, Scott had to carefully work his way around some plumbing in the ceiling (from our master bathroom above), as well as various floor joists. The ceiling fan that we had ordered did not arrive as planned and therefore, Scott finished everything that he could and then returned the very next day to hang the new fan. Everything from start to finish went exceptionally well. We are absolutely thrilled with the finished product. Scott was meticulous and paid close attention detail. He was extremely polite and professional and always cleaned up well after himself. We will most definitely use Scott again for our future electrical needs.
Description of Work: FAMILY ROOM: a) installed four (4) new 6" recessed light fixtures in our family room ceiling (with halogen bulbs); b) installed a single pole decor dimmer switch for family room recessed lighting; b) removed existing ceiling fan and installed new ceiling fan. KITCHEN: a) installed one (1) new 6" recessed light fixtures in our kitchen ceiling (directly above the island); b) removed old trim kits and installed four (4) new trim kits on existing kitchen recessed lights. This enabled all (e.g. existing and new) recessed lights to match throughout kitchen and family room; c) installed a 3-way decor dimmer switch for kitchen recessed lighting. NOTE: Total cost included ALL parts and labor (except for the new ceiling fan that we purchased).

Scott arrived a few minutes early for our appointment. With me being a prompt person, that is always appreciated. He got right to work on the install of the lights, and was able to get a particularly tricky light installed properly. The final price was also less than I expected it would be. Scott did a great job, was prompt, knowledgeable & efficient. This is the 3rd or 4th time I have used Scott. I plan on using him again down the road, and have already recommended him to several people.
Description of Work: Scott installed three outdoor, motion detector lights for me. He also set the timing and sensitivity levels of each light. The entire job took about 1 hour. Also, he met my schedule by coming by late in the afternoon.

I called Scott about a kitchen light. Every time we changed the bulb the light would work, when you cut it on later the bulb would blow out. I thought it was the light can. Scott looked at the cans and bulbs and knew it wasn't the problem. He started looking at the light switch. He said it felt loose. He took it off and sure enough, the light switch had cracked. At that time I had him look at the dishwasher switch as well as the garbage disposal. All of the switches were broken. Scott replaced them all and everything is working perfectly. Since he was here, I had him look at the outlet on my porch. It hasn't worked since we bought the house. He identified the problem and took care of it immediately. His prices were reasonable and fair. He took the time to explain everything to me. I told him I want him to come back in a few weeks to install a new ceiling fan.
Description of Work: Replaced several light switches and a circuit switch.

One of the ceiling cans wasn't working. Scott determined that the can had been installed incorrectly (6 years ago) and recommended that I replace the can. When I asked him if ALL the cans had been installed that way, he said yes. So I figured, while he was here, might as well replace all of them. The dimmer switch had been a special order from Lowe's. Scott called his electrical supply house and they had one in stock. So Scott drove 25 minutes or so in each direction to pick up the cans and switch and did the job. This is the third time I've used Scott and once again, he did a fine job.
Description of Work: Replaced 7 ceiling cans in the kitchen and a dimmer switch.

This is some of the best service that I have ever experienced from a company. Scott charged me only for a service call, but he stayed for over an hour to allow the circuits to cool so that he could turn the power back on and test the breakers. Very thorough and extremely professional. I sure wish that my builder had hired him!
Description of Work: The main circuit breaker for the house was tripping and would not re-set. Got an immediate response from Scott who arrived about an hour later. Found the problem (builder did not tighten the wires in my circuit box-- could have caused a fire!) and took the time to check all the connections in the breaker box, meter box, and A/C panel box.

1) Scott showed up right on time 2) Explained to me in detail what he was going to do 3) As he was doing it, he explained it to me so I could understand 4) Explained the electrical code to me and the right way to wire the receptacles and why that was important from a safety standpoint.
Description of Work: I hired Scott to help troubleshoot a light fixture that I couldn't get to work. In addition, since I just purchased the home, I wanted him to take a look at the breaker box and ensure everything was safe. Just recently, a relative on my spouses side had their home burn down through old faulty wiring. SCARY!!! Scott examined the breaker box, investigated which circuits were powering which receptacles. Also, he changed out an older type receptacle for a GFCI which will shut off at the receptacle rather than the breaker in the event there is a problem at the receptacle. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for receptacles near sinks due to the proximity of water.

Mr. MacCallum promptly responded to my phone call requesting an estimate for miscellaneous electrical repairs (conversion of 220V outlet, repair of wiring for hall light, etc) and we agreed that he would come to my house at a designated time to provide an estimate and if acceptable, go ahead and perform the work. Unfortunately, Mr. MacCallum never showed up for the appointment, and he never called.

The work was completed flawlessly. The can light was a challenge to install due to the age of the house and cracks in the old plaster ceiling, but Scott was extremely careful and precise, and he got the light in perfectly. He then installed the new kitchen pendant in a breeze. He also advised me on some problems I was having with a couple of existing light fixtures where the lights were going on and off, and he fixed the problem while he was there. I really appreciated that Scott was willing to take on a small project like mine. I feel I got an amazing value for what I spent, and would absolutely hire Scott back for any future electrical projects.

I am having my garage finished with drywall/paint and cabinets for better organization. The cabinet installer suggested having outlets placed in my garage before the drywall is placed. Well, the drywall was going up the next morning, so I needed an electrician quick! I logged into Angie's List to find a recommended electrician and found Maccallum Electric. I called Scott Maccallum and he was at my home within the hour (I chose Scott because his location). He is very pleasant and easy to work with. He came over and made suggestions on placement and immediately got to work. My only qualm may be his avoidance of my questions on the cost. Since I was in a bind at the last minute, I was prepared to pay above market average to get the work done. But when I asked him twice how much the work would cost, he seemed to "talk over" me. I will admit, I don't deal with contractors very often (my husband handles this stuff), so I was a little put off with this tactic. When I asked him a third time, I found out his hourly rate is in line with other electricians in my area. I don't mind paying people for their time, just be upfront on what the time is gonna cost!

I could not have been happier with the price, the finished project or the experience of meeting Scott.
Description of Work: My attic exhaust fan died last summer. I read about Scott MacCallum's work in your September edition of Pages of Happiness, so I gave him a call. He appeared at the appointed time and went straight to my attic, carrying a ladder, tools and supplies up my disappearing stairs. He tested the fan (and it was indeed dead), replaced the fan, the thermostat and the control switch, making several trips up and down his ladder and my stairs. After installation, he tested the new fan, was not pleased with a vibration rattle, and devised a way to minimize it. Great job!

Scott was great. He came over within a couple of hours on the Saturday we called and gave us an idea of what we needed and what it would cost. He returned when we had everything ready for the electrical part and completed his work in just a few hours. His work was neat, efficient and he made sure it all worked before he left. He was courteous and a pleasure to work with.

Scott is just the best! I bought an old house that was far from meeting current code and he has done almost all of the electrical work over the past year to bring it up to code and make it safe. This has included moving the main service from a cramped interior wall, installing a whole new electrical connection with more power and a new outdoor panel, installing GFCI's, new fixtures etc.. He took the time this visit to chisel out the brick and re-mortar it so that the outdoor boxes and covers would not stick out far off the wall. When he replaced the hall light and found that the light switch was worn, he went ahead and replaced it so I wouldn't have to call him back. I've recommended him to a several of my friends - something I'm very careful about.
Description of Work: Wired and installed two outdoor outlets in brick walls for the front porch and back patio, installed new hall light fixture, rewired hall light switch and replaced some old two prong outlets with GFCI's required by some new appliances.

We first thought the issue was in the actual appliance, as it was working fine, then suddenly not. After appliance repair organization serviced the unit, the repairman indicated the problem was within the house wiring, not the appliance. We contacted Scott MacCallum. That same day, he came out and within a reasonable time deduced the source of the problem. The cost of the repair was nominal ($5 part), but it did take 2 hours to determine the cause (as it was found in the crawl space under the kitchen). Scott did an excellent job, overall.

He had a long drive here. He charged a flat fee to come out. The man was very nice. It was a very easy fix for the outlets in the kitchen, and it only took him a minute. Since he was already here, I found some other things for him to do. He definitely helped me and I appreciated him coming all the way here. I would definitely use him again in the future and have already recommended him to others.

Scott MacCallum is a highly experienced electrician who knew just what to do in "retrofitting" an older house with bathroom vent fans. He also checked out our attic vent fans while he was installing the ductwork in the attic and discovered that one of the vent fans had a burned out motor. Scott made some great suggestions about other possible lighting updates in the master bath and we have scheduled him to return to do that and some other repair work, including installing a new motor and cut off switches for the attic vent fans. We will call MacCallum Electrical in the future whenever we need electrical work done.

We had a bit of a ghost in our upstairs hall fixture for a couple of weeks and the light fixture in the attic quit working. The ceiling mounted light in the hall would sometimes work, sometimes not, sometime flicker and sometimes dim. I called Scott MacCallum, left a message and he called me back within an hour. We talked about the problem and he graciously agreed to fit us in between jobs the next day. He arrived early and went into detective mode immediately. Apparently, it is easier to find an electrical lighting problem if it goes out entirely, rather than working intermittently. His comment was, "That's OK. I like a challenge." As a funny note for those of you reading this, the only problem with the attic fixture was a tripped breaker. Scott isolated the ghost problem to the ceiling fixture, but also opened all of the related wall switches to check and tighten the connections. He removed the tired old fixture and made suggestions for a replacement. My husband and I were both pleased that Scott charged us for a service call only. I bought a new fixture today and left Scott a message to arrange for him to install it, again between jobs. We will be having some new wiring done next spring and will definitely call Scott MacCallum again.
Description of Work: Scott did some troubleshooting in our upstairs hall, stairway, attic and attached storage to find an elusive loose wire causing a flickering light. He was able to pinpoint the problem as a failing fixture in the hall. As a bonus, he also activated an unused hall plate with a switch to replace the pull chain for the attic fixture.
