We appreciate the review shared with other Angie's List members and are pleased to know our technician was able to assist with your cooling issue. Our apologies if the standard and customary assessment fees were not confirmed, and we do hope our response times and quick resolution proved to be worth the cost of the service. Our team will review this communication and look for any areas of improvement, and we are again thankful for the feedback. We look forward to earning an overall "A" on our next visit. Thanks for your business! Chris Horne

Jim C. arrived on time and was very personable and professional. He did a thorough inspection of our system and provided us with detailed pictures and explanations of what he noticed and suggestions. He offered us several options and even told us that our furnace didn't need replacing at this time and would probably be fine a few years. His pricing for a Trane system was phenomenal - we couldn't believe it could be that affordable. We did decide to go with a competitor ~ it was a close race and difficult decision. I would not hesitate to call on Horne Heating & Air in the future. We were very pleased :)

Thanks for your feedback. This is an absolutely unfair review as we did not perform any services and the Big Deal Tune-up CLEARLY states the system(s) must be operational for services to be performed and any additional diagnosis and/or repairs would be billable at the time of service. We are sorry you were not able to understand the terms of the Big Deal, and we wish you success finding a service provider that is willing to meet your unreasonable expectations. I welcome you to contact me directly if you would like to discuss further. I may be reach at 704-393-3273. Thank you, Chris Horne

I had a very difficult time making my final decision between two providers. I naturally wished I could have hired both of them. Would definitely consider and recommend Horne based on my interview experience.
Description of Work: Met with me in my home. We walked through all the areas of the home to be serviced by new furnaces(2) and air conditioning units(2). I called the company about 8 am to schedule a technician to get our a/c working on the second floor. It had been out for several days. I did some trouble shooting myself, ordered and installed a new fan capacitor which got it running but not cooling. I was told by the office personnel that I would be "worked in" to a technician's schedule. I was sent an email that fully explained this process. It also had tips of things to do while I waited for a call from the tech, very helpful. At approx 3 pm that same day I received a call from Bobby, a tech with Horne, to inform me that he would be there in 20 mins. When he arrived he greeted me professional and went right to work, gathering as much info from me on the unit and the situation, taking notes as he went. I was impressed as to how much inventory they carry in their trucks as far as parts. I'm not going to get into all the technical details of this repair but, he informed me of everything he was doing as he went, was respectful of our home, was very personable, gave me great tips for future upkeep of the 3 units that we have, was not in a hurry and very competent in his diagnosis and repair. He did provide additional pricing for a maintenance agreement, which we are going to do. I could not be happier with this tech and this company. Change nothing and keep up the good work! I will be calling soon to set up Maintenence agreement.

The project consultant was very knowledgeable and presented the options in detail. We had a second estimate from another HVAC company at the approximately the same price and so had that for comparison. With the Horne representative's plan, we felt we got a more customized plan for our home situation. The installation of the 2 new systems took 3 days. The crew was efficient, removed & installed equipment with no damage to our home, cleaned up each day, and kept us informed regarding the progress of the work. We were given through instructions for operation of the thermostats and filtration system. Supervisory personnel checked on the progress of the work each day. We are very satisfied with our new systems and can feel a positive difference in our home's air conditioning. It's much quieter, the air feels "crisper", and the variable speed capability of the systems works very well. Horne will be back in the Fall, to make sure all is operating properly for the winter.
Description of Work: Replaced 2 entire AC and heating systems with state of the art Trane AC and gas furnaces for both 1st (dual fuel furnace) and 2nd floors, 2 programmable thermostats, 2 Clean Effects Filtration systems, replaced 4 air return grills, added 3 supply ducts, and 1 air return. The systems come with 10 year parts and labor warranties. City building permits were obtained with a final city inspection.

Horne has really helpful office staff to schedule appointments, and there is a worker, Jason, who really knows how to maintain & repair the fairly unusual water-based HVAC units our condo community uses (Aquatherm HVACs). He has helped me & many others in our community in the past years. This time he came to check on a possible leaking gauge in my upstairs HVAC, and to find whether both HVAC units were cooling properly since the home inspection report listed concerns. After carefully checking both units Jason determined that the temperatures were normal ( & I had thought so too since my home stays cool with the units running). He also found that there was no leak in the water pipes, but one pipe needed better insulation to prevent condensation drips.. He used heavy-duty insulation so that the HVAC stayed dry. Jason kept the areas he was working on clean and dry, and worked quickly. .I was able to use a $30 off coupon from the Angie's List monthly magazine, which also helped keep the cost down. I have found Horne is an excellent company to rely on for honest, dependable heating and air conditioning service.

The woman who answered when I called was very helpful - and knowledgeable about lots of issues enough to give me short term help until the tech could arrive. The gentleman that came was great - very knowledgeable, and told us what our long term issues would be with our older AC units without actually overselling or pushing us - I always appreciate that. He was honest, and worked hard. Having an AC unit go out in July in the south makes for a busy season, but they squeezed us in as soon as they could. They also emailed me a packet of information, along with a phone number to call at any time to get a ballpark estimate of when they might arrive (since we were on the "on call" list). They don't want us missing them when they arrive, either! When it's time for a new unit, I'll definitely be calling them.

I called on Monday to get our HVAC fixed and was told that I was on a list for service. They didn't set appointments at this time, we must wait until our turn for service. After two days of waiting for a call to fix our air conditioning, I called another company who gave me an appointment for the next day. I have used them in the past and it was great. My suggestion would be to go back to the way you used to do business with appointments for customers, instead of a wait list that never got to our name!

We appreciate the review shared on Angie's List. In an effort to clarify the service call history for other members, please note when you originally called our office on June 26, we had an on-call technician available and headed in your direction, only to be cancelled by you that same evening. Fast forward to July 14, you called again and were indeed put on a work-in list. An appointment confirmation e-mail was sent explaining our work-in status and that it may indeed be a day or 2 before we could service your home. Unfortunately the demand from our service agreement clients was overwhelming that week and we are truly sorry we could not get to you sooner. We hope this clarifies the situation for other members that will read this review, and our company looks forward to having a future opportunity to be of service at your home. Thank you, Chris Horne

They came in and installed my new thermostat in a timely manner. They also performed an inspection of my HVAC unit and vents, and made some good recommendation. I was impressed with their work. As a follow up, I had them come out and do a quote to install a new intake to fix a ventilation issue (the air being pulled came partially from the crawlspace, so wasn't as clean as it should be). They gave me a quote, but given the age and condition of my system (~18 years old, and not well maintained before I purchased the house), recommended that it wasn't worth doing this with my old system. They recommended I held off on doing this until I bought a new system. I appreciated the honestly, and they will be the first people I call to get a quote on a new system when I'm ready.

I arrived home to find that my house was 80 degrees. I called Horne HVAC for after hours emergency service at 5:25 pm. After a few calls back and forth a tech arrived just prior to 9 pm. He quickly diagnosed the problem. We had a bad capacitor which which was replaced. PROS: We were comfortable for the night. The tech was professional, diagnosed the problem correctly, and quickly. CONS: I had to call back a second time, after over an hour wait, to get an initial response. There seemed to be a communication gap from the office and the tech. I had no idea of the cost until after the work was completed. Expecting roughly $300.00 but the bill was $532.00.

Horne Heating and Air set me up with an appointment about 2 weeks out and I stayed out of work to meet them at the house and after waiting 30 minutes past the scheduled time, I called them just to find out they decided I was out of their service area, but no one called me or e-mailed me to tell me. I needed a complete heating & air system replacement and I received 5 bids for a Trane system. From the moment I initially called Horne, they stood out from the other guys. The office was very friendly, sent me a confirmation email with who will be coming to my house (with his picture), a description about Horne and links to all their online reviews and accreditation. The others guys spent between 15 min to 1 hr determining what system my house needed (sizing). One company knocked on my current system and gave me a quote on a replacement based on what I currently have. Michael at Horne measured my house, my windows, climbed in my attic, walked through each room, then plotted everything on his computer, even detailing the type of windows I had. I am 100% confident his sizing was the most accurate of all the bids. Another ?above and beyond? service detail was all of the other guys were fine with me keeping my current Nest thermostat with the new Trane heating & air system. Michael explained to me that technically I could use it, but there were were a handful of features I would be buying with the new system and not utilizing, as the Nest wasn?t built exclusively for Trane. Horne?s customer service was extended to the install day when they brought in 2 portable AC units to keep the house cool while they installed the new Trane heating & air system. This was a concern of mine as we had a 3 week old, and it was 94 the day of the install. The attention to detail that Jason and Jeff put into the install impressed me. The install is so clean, with every gas line, wire, hose, etc having a purpose of placement. Where they placed the portable AC units and replaced the return grill was left cleaner than they founded it. At the end of the day, they were so proud of their work. I could tell they loved what they did, and they were happy with how it went. When the Mecklenburg County inspector showed up, I met him at the driveway and he saw the Horne sign and told me ?This is a Horne Install. I am not going to have any problems here.? A complete replacement of my heating & air system was a big decision, and it?s a big investment. With Michael?s help it went very smooth, and we are very, very happy with our decision and system.

They shared with me the cost of the service call ($90), but when I asked their charge for a very specific item they refused to offer that over the phone. I take this as a red flag. I had asked how much they charge per pound for old type of freon. There is no reason they cannot share this.

Thanks for the feedback on Angie's List. Our organization feels this report is not justified as it our company policy to disclose only assessment fees over the phone, and the member will find that most reputable companies in this market do the same. There are many, many factors other than Freon when it comes to the operation of a heating and cooling system, and that may not have been the specific problem with that system. Our trained technicians will analyze the system and determine the exact problem and provide recommendations to repair or improve the functionality of the system. Quoting that type of service over the phone is simply impossible. The fact that this member was not satisfied with our refusal to quote specific repair prices verbally suggests he was calling several different companies to find the lowest price, and was not as concerned with the quality, value and professionalism that our team provides on a consistent basis. two Well my issue is not paying 640 dollars for the freeon, but the return phone call that I got Saturday when I called to report that the system was not working properly. I was made aware of the diagnostic fee. I had a problem with this. I asked why do I have to pay for another diagnostic fee when less than 48 hours ago, a technician had already done one. I was told to wait, and see if there was leak. To schedule a "sniff test" two weeks later. In retrospect this makes no sense. If you are telling me its a leak why not just do the test once you have placed nearly 1000.00 dollars worth of freeon into the system. Instead saying I think there is a leak, wait and we will do a leak test later. I tried to explain to this to the person that called me back that this made no sense. He says "You have already had 3 companies look at the system." What does this have to do with your company. "Well if you do not do annyal maintenance on the unit, then it will be prone to break down." I just shook my head and said someone comes out usually twice a summer for service, its never worked long enough to start a maintenance agreement. Yeah insinuate that I am being negligent, while its 86 degrees inside, after I just wrote a check for 640.00 dollars. The tone of voice was disgusting. We finally agreed to have someone come out Monday. The diagnostic fee would be waive, as if it was some kind of favor. I feel like it should have had a proper assessment two days ago. The technicians were very professional, but everyone I spoke with on the phone need some customer service class refreshers. I have reviewed this company once before, and gave them accolades for service perform in 2013. I do not know what happened in one year, but at this point I would never use this company or refer it to anyone. I did threatened to block the check for 640 dollars, he threatened me with collections. I said fine we can deal with it in small claims court. Its not the money but the principle. Use at your own risk. I called another HVAC company, who agreed to a diagnostic from scratch, which is what should have been done Thursday.
Description of Work: This service provider came out to my home in 2013 relaced a mismatched capacitor and OEM fan in the unit that was installed by another company. The airconditioner worked fine until this summer of 2014 when the same problem occured. Since I had a good experience with this company prior in the past, I called for service 6/11/2014. The technician came out to do a diagnostic. Stated that the system was low on coolant. Refiled the system with 640 dollars of freeon, and told me to schedule a leak test for freeon 2 weeks from now. That sounded fine initially. Yet after paying 640 dollars for at this point essentially freeon that has probably just leaked back out, its agan 83 degrees. Great assessment. Why not do the leak test once you have filled it with freeon, instead of waiting for it to leak out?

Thank you for the review. Please find below some important background notes, in an effort to clarify the recent service and history with this member. The member's first service with Horne was on August 28, 2013, our team was called out for a tripping breaker. Our technician found that [member name removed] had another company change out condenser fan motor. The motor had failed again because the other company had put the wrong capacitor on the unit. Our technician recommended preventative maintenance on the system at that time in 2013. In February of 2014 the member called Horne back to his home because he saw water in his condensation pan. The member accused us of creating a higher water bill. Our technician explained to the client that the water in the pan had nothing to do with a high water bill, and found a hose clamp pulled off on the condensation pump. The member was not charged for this call and it was in no way connected with the previous visit (Aug 2013). The call in question on this particular review took place on June 12, 2014 for a failed motor, and the member immediately accused our company of installing an inferior product in Aug 2013. The member was adamant about getting the service for free, but we explained we had to have a credit card as per our standard company policy for non-Service Agreement clients - and our team even noted to him on the initial call that we had recommended a service agreement on the previous 2 visits. At the time of service our technician diagnosed a refrigerant leak and had to add 8lbs of refrigerant. Our technician explained to the client that we needed to return and do a thorough leak test on the system. The recommendation was rejected by the client (and our invoice shoes this in writing). At that point the member was clearly advised the refrigerant charge would not last, and this was also documented on the signed invoice. On Saturday June 14, the member called our company again and our on-call technician responded within 15 minutes Our technician explained there would be a charge for the return visit. The member became upset and refused. Our technician contacted his Field Supervisor, who then spoke to the member. Unfortunately the member argued with our Field Supervisor and hung up the phone. Our Field Supervisor then contacted our Service Manager. Our Service Manager called the member, and was quickly advised the member had contacted his bank to stop payment for the June 12, 2014 repair, the member stated he was not going to pay anything and that our company would return to his home and re-charge the unit for free. Our Service Manager explained to the member we would not be returning to his home without a credit card to cover a weekend response and repairs. Our Service Manager also recognized the system installed was fairly new and asked the member about contacting the installing company (not Horne HVAC) to inquire about responsibility or craftsmanship warranty. It was also discovered that this member has gone through (3) HVAC companies in the last 4 years. Our Service Manager explained the need for regular maintenance and that every Horne representative that had been o his home recommended routine maintenance. The member refused and stated our company was looking to blame him for our mistakes. During the final phone conversation, the member threatened to give us a negative review on Angie’s List and that he would also file a complaint with the BBB. Our Service Manager explained Horne would not be blackmailed into giving a free product, that this was unfair to our paying clients and the hardworking technicians. The member didn’t seem to care, and the conversation ended. Upon further review on Angie's List... the member shows that 67% of his reviews are negative for all services. We feel this member site is clearly used as a negotiating tool and this review is absolutely unwarranted. Horne Heating and Air Conditioning wishes this member success with future services, unfortunately those services will not be provided by Horne Heating and Air Conditioning. Chris Horne

I have had both units checked and serviced twice a year since new. Surprised to get such a long list of recommended items. All I can say is it felt like the techs were being paid based on what they sell. It did not "feel" like the experience I was hoping for. I elected to have two capacitors replaced based on the sense of urgency they expressed one for fan and one for compressor unit. They finished both in less than 30 minutes and charged us $400. I can't imagine the parts cost more than $20 so it appears they charged us about an $800/hour rate. This is ridiculous. We only did about half of what they recommended. I was looking for a new company to start annual manintenance plan but I have to say I don't feel good about using them based on this first experience.
Description of Work: Came out for a/c system check on two units. Gave us laundry list of recommended items. Replaced two capacitors.

Thank you for the review on Angie's List. Please find below a series of events for this particular service. The member's first and only call to Horne was a $39 Angie’s List big deal tune up. Upon arrival we found customer’s unit running and but low on refrigerant. Our technician found the unit a little low on the charge and with a bad capacitors. Our technician also found leaking ductwork and repaired this at no additional charge for the customer. Customer opted to purchase the two capacitors, our technician physically showed the member they were weak. The low refrigerant correction was rejected by the member. When authorizing the capacitors, the customer complained that he could buy these for a lot less. Our technician explained that these are not the small capacitors that you see off the shelf at local consumer stores, and part of the price is the labor and knowledge required to put them on and test the system for operation. We were the second HVAC company to work on the AL members unit and hope to have future opportunities to show our Super Service Awards have been well earned. Thanks, Chris Horne

The experience with Horne was fantastic from the sales experience with Jim Chandler, to Mark coming to do the pre-work measurements and to get the materials list made to Jason and Jeff the installers. If anyone is lucky enough to get the team of Jason and Jeff to do the install on their job, those individuals are extremly, extremly fortunate. Jason and Jeff could not have worked harder, been more professional or detail oriented. They always kept extremely positive even when faced with diversity or while working in a 100+ degree attic for most of the day, When one of the units they were installing did not work correctly, they recommended that the company bring out a new unit rather than fight the issues they were having with the unit they were installing. The company took their recommendation and brought out the new unit even though re-installing a working unit added 3 hours to their job. I was truly impressed from start to finish with Horne and would recommend them to anyone who is considering either HVAC repairs or a full install. Too bad they don't do landscaping. I would hire them for that. Great job, Horne!!!

When the technician arrived, I explained what I experiencing down stairs. Patrick was friendly and knowledgeable about the system. Within a few minutes, he identified that the cause of the lack of cooling was due to the unit being low coolant. He provided three options for resolution. I chose to recharge only given the age of the system and the fact that the leak seems to be slow (the unit was recharged 2 years ago). There was no pressure to do otherwise. I will likely use them again.

I found Horne on Angie's list after getting a $6200 quote from another Heating and Air company that I've been using for the last couple of years....This is after I recouped from price-shock I checked with 2 other companies that were all in the same ballpark for quote $, including Horne (about $1000 less than the 1st quote). [It seems the 1st one was way off the mark]. I live about an hour away from Charlotte now so was managing this from afar. Horne seems like a well-oiled machine! Love that. This was a very busy time for them. I spoke to 3 individuals - the main office/service coordinator Dee, Mike (the guy who knew his stuff and prepared the quote - sales person/owner?...) and another service coordinator (when Dee was on another line). They were all on the same page and were communicating constantly (for quotes, timing, installation, etc). Though tremendously busy they were patient, detailed, caring and responsive. I have a tenant in the unit and the work was well-coordinated all around - they kept me informed and coordinated directly with the tenant to meet them and for installation). I was very impressed with the quote layout that Mike provided....it was extremely detailed and proactively told me pretty much everything that I needed to know and more (including about required city inspection, warranty, all-in price, options...)...awesome - loved it and that made me feel much more informed and comfortable about this decision. (this is especially in contrast to the other quotes I received with 3 lines (Part #, Part # and total price)). Mike was extremely patient related to answering questions (before hanging up double checked to make sure I didn't have any other questions that he could help with) and providing a temporary solution (thank you - thank you! - it was the 1st really hot week of the year) Dee was awesome! and seems to keep things ticking, activity organized and great with follow up. They also were able to work a tight schedule and had us up and running in a couple of days. I feel like we got fantastic service for a fair price and they made what was not a great situation - no AC - a very pleasant experience. Thank you Horne! We would highly recommend Horne Heating & Air!
