I guess it was ok, but I did not end up buying any of the other services from them. They said it was leaking and recommended for me to purchase additional services that they offered, but the big deal was ok. Their customer service didn't stand out like some of the other companies that I have used.

I contacted Energy Tight for a home energy audit. I was routed through an automated system with many options (must be a big company) until I finally got to a secretary. I told her I was interested in a home energy audit and she said I needed to speak with ***** and he would call me. I provided my name and number and waited. It's been almost 2 weeks and I never got a call. I went with another company who was actually responsive.
Description of Work: Took my information down. That's literally it.

They did a great job on that. The scheme of their business plan is after they do that they try and push green energy products like the aluminum reflection in the roof and solar. It helped us decide what we are going to do to improve our house efficiency.

They identified a couple of areas where cool area could get in, but everything was in good shape so there was no need for follow up. They gave me a few options of work that could be done, but I chose to not go through with the work. They did a good job with the assessment and they gave me a full report of what they found which was nice.

Matt provided us with a very thorough energy assessment. His 24 page report included thermal images of our home showing where energy was escaping. He provided information on the efficiency of our furnaces and air conditioners (we have a finished basement) and our windows. He assessed the performance of our wall, floor and attic insulation and told us where we had air leaks throughout the house. He then offered suggestions about what we might want to do to make our home more energy efficient. We agreed to sign a 2 year agreement for twice annual checks of our two systems for $259.00 total. After the first year we called to schedule our Spring 2012 inspection, only to find out their phone had been disconnected. After a few calls, we found a number for Ross and Whitman Inc. who apparently had bought out Energy Tight and it's customer lists. All ended well as Matt was with the new company and did our inspections for 2012. We have been pleased with Matt's work and will continue with the company as long as he is there.

There were additional charges to the Big Deal because we used the whole thing and then had to pay more. The pricing was just about right. Every inch of the house was inspected for air leaks, a door blower test was done, thermal pictures were taken. the inspection was followed up with a thorough report which included the photos, results of the blower test and the other tests that were done. We were very impressed with the service and professionalism of Energy Tight - highly recommend them!
Description of Work: We just built a new home and wanted to see how well insulated our home was. The audit was very thorough and professional - we were impressed. It provided us the info we were looking for - our new home was well insulated. If we ever need their services in the future, I would definately use them.

The operations team arrived on time and performed the services in the course of one day. They were professional and pleasant. The attic insulation looked fine – and plentiful. We were unable to inspect the air seal work of the attic and crawl space but were shown pictures of examples of the work that had been done. We were able to see the work done on the windows and doors, and we were not at all satisfied. For the doors, we were able to see gaps in the seal and light still coming in through the door frame. The work on the windows was not what had been agreed to with Mitch. Using his equipment, Mitch showed us that all of the windows needed some amount of sealing. He said they would use a foam insulation inside the window frame. When the operations techs arrived, instead of using equipment, the foreman eyeballed the windows and decided that not all of them needed seal work. And further, instead of using a foam insulation that Mitch had described, he used a silicone sealant only on the outside of the house and only on the bottoms of the selected windows. The seal work was very messy and not at all what we were expecting. The silicone sealant was showing on the windows and on the siding of the house. We contacted the company about the problems with doors and windows. Mitch reassured us that the silicone would cure and blend into the siding. It didn’t. An operations tech come back twice to address the door seals, and ultimately decided that he could not fix the problem. With this company, there is a discrepancy with the services that are sold and execution of said services. We were guaranteed a 20% energy usage reduction for the house. We have monitored our kilowatt usage every month and have seen less than a 5% reduction. Our belief is that while we received value for the insulation, we received no value for the sealing of the attic, crawl space, windows, and doors. We also contracted with the company for yearly maintance of our HVAC system. However they contacted us in the fall of 2011 saying they were declaring bankrupsy. Because of this, we never contact them about the energy usage guarantee. We are honestly surprised that this company is still in business, and feel ripped off.
Description of Work: Mitch came with instruments to measure the energy efficiency of the house. He checked the attic, the crawl space, windows, doors, and duct work. He came back with the results of the analysis. He presented his recommendations and reviewed the pricing of the services. We contracted for additional insulation in the attic, and for air sealing in the attic, crawl space, windows and doors. Mitch was very professional and friendly, and very enthusiastic about the potential improvements to our home. Updated Review: After they responded to our review, we called the company to see if there was something that they could do. Brandon Tucker and his team came out and agreed that the previous team had not done a very good job. At their own time and expense, they corrected the problems and added materials. They did the best that they could do to upgrade to the new company standards. I really appreciate that they did this when they did not have to.

Customer, Im sorry that you had such a poor experience with Energy Tight. Our company, Ross and Witmer, aquired Energy Tight at the beginning of 2012, and yes they were in fact about to shut down. We valued their tools, experience, and believed that that the energy consultants were professional and knowledgeable. I can't speak to their service before our aquisition, and Mitchell was only part of the team for a short time under our ownership, but I can assure you that we have redefined the Energy Tight approach. We are proud of our abilities, customer service, and results - as are many other satisfied Angie's List members. In fact we just recieved notification that we won the Super Service award for the second year in a row. It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience with the old Energy Tight team but we welcome you to give us another shot at any future home performance needs. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Regards, Geoff Eloge Director of Residential Services Ross and Witmer, and Energy Tight

I was quite happy with the process and the service. They come out and perform the audit and you get a detailed full colour report a little later. They were able to discuss my concerns clearly and concisely and helped me prioritize any improvements I might choose to make. The only mistake they made was to point to an uninsulated wall based on observations from one side of it. After I read the report I verified the wall is actually insulated, but I can see how the structure in the area could fool them. From the attic side it looks like an uninsulated wall, but a more careful look when you crawl in shows it is the vertical component of trusses against exterior sheathing and the wall is insulated behind the exterior sheathing (I verified it to be sure). I was very happy with everything except this one error. In the worst case the mistake might have led me to spend money I did not have to, but even that worst case wouldn't be so bad - more (properly installed) insulation is never a bad thing and even new houses in my area have pretty poor R and U values.

The crew was very professional, kept everything clean and explained every part thorougly. For someone that had just purchased the home a year before using a home inspector I couldn't believe how bad the house was. For story, see above. And if asked I would recommend them very highly.
Description of Work: Energy Tight did a complete energy audit and examined furnace and ducts and inspected attic. After finding multiple problems (i.e. heat flow in three rooms low and one room way too hot, inadequate insulation) they wrote a detailed report and scheduled work date. They insulated the entire attic and redirected the ducts including straightening and sealing and checking all connections to furnace. After repairing a broken part on furnace, they redid the whole house test for air flow, leakage, etc. and while not perfect, it was vastly improved. They also serviced the furnace and insulated the hot water heater (in the garage) and the door to the attic.I had a warmer house (three rooms were very cold before) and my gas bill was consistently lower. I was very happy with the results.

The initial audit was 2 or 3 hundred dollars. The work Energy Tight did was pretty good. I think they were more expensive than I would have liked. If I had the chance again, I would look into more companies. I could have had it done for less. But I don't know if the quality would be as good.

Brandon had to cancel the first two appointments because of an emergency but he did call or make sure I was called prior to our morning appointment time. He arrived today on time and took off shoes before entering the house which I appreciated. He asked for access to the attic, energy bills for the year and any concerns I wanted to address during our telephone contact and we viewed and discussed the bills and concerns first. Brandon then inspected the entire house and asked questions to make sure he had all the information needed for his assessment. My major concern was high energy bills and return on my investment. Brandon was very professional and explained his findings and what we could do to fix the problems. He suggested at least one more cold air return because the only one on the main floor is not centrally located. The ducts and vents need to be sealed with mastic. An attic fan would improve ventilation and keep the attic and top floor cooler. Two access panels to the attic need a zippered seal or another form of insulation and the bonus room could be easier to heat and cool if he installs some kind of board on the attic side of the wall to seal it off from the attic. Brandon is also checking code on my dryer vent to improve on the existing very long circuitous vent duct run we now have. He agreed to break out each seperate repair on the estimate and said he has software to show the estimated energy savings for each item. He asked that if I am having multiple repairs done to bundle them so he can send enough workers and allot time to eliminate multiple trips when possible. I am waiting for his estimate. I can then decide repairs to do first for the energy efficiency and cost savings I am looking for. If the price is right I will be on my way to lower utility bills and a safer, more comfortable home. I will update this reivew when I get the estimate and if any work is performed. For $99 I feel it was worth it to get a game plan to reach my goal of more energy efficiency for less money. Only time will tell if it works. And by the way, if Energy Tight does the work I get credit for the the $99 toward the work bill.

The energy audit was very detailed. We discovered that we didn't need to replace the windows after all -- there were many other areas that made for a better ROI. The work was done in a timely manner after we decided to go forward with the project. Within just a few days of the work being done, we could tell a difference in the house. The air conditioner and heater didn't have to run as much to keep the house at a comfortable temperature. (before the work was done, even with the AC running full blast, the house didn't cool down) Right after the work was done, we discovered that the front door had been insulated so well that the lock would no longer close. they were very prompt to come out and fix that. When it was time for our spring inspection of our HVAC system, we discovered that the filter door on the humidifier had been sealed shut. Brandon responded very quickly and made sure that the additional mastic was removed.
Description of Work: Whole house energy audit and work based on recommendations: - attic tent- boxes over lights to prevent cool/warm air from escaping into attic- blew insulation- sealed ducts- chimney insert to prevent cool/warm air from escaping house- weather stripping on doors- thermal "blanket" for the hot water heater- rerouted a duct to a back bedroom

The Audit: We purchased the audit, and scheduled both the assessment and results review one week apart. Brandon arrived at our home and did a full energy assessment in October. This included: -A preliminary visual inspection of each interior room of the house -Listening to my comments regarding walls and areas of the house that felt cold -Full Infrared imaging of ceilings areas and exterior walls to determine areas of thermal leakage -Air penetration testing, by use of a Doorway pressure vacuum door which de-pressurized the home so outside air was drawn into the home. -Air quality assessment for water heater/furnace CO2 leakage and fresh air quality in every room of the house. Immediately during the Infrared imaging, there were eye-opening experiences... I could see where the vaulted ceiling in the Master BR was causing the cold interior wall problem. I could see how the leaks around the fireplace were penetrating only from the right side. And most interesting, Brandon found that one of the upstairs bedrooms (11x11) had *NO* insulation over more than half the room. This was because a roof gable (from the builder's elevation change) never had an attic access hole cut out of the roof deck material into that area--so the people performing the original insulation never even know that there was a space to be insulated behind it. Eye-opening initial results for sure. To think... we bought this house 2 years ago.... it was built in 1998. That's a LOT of energy wasted heating and cooling against those voids over the years. A week later (the pre-scheduled 2nd appointment), Brandon presented the results of the assessment to us. It was a bound stack of paper of about 40 pages, and he spent nearly an hour going over it, page by page. Much of it were the results of the testing with pictures and description. A number pages of it were a detailed work plan to mitigate the identified issues. The rest of it were products that are choices to mitigate the issues. Brandon presented the full document to me, then the very last page brought together the services that they could provide, broken down into 6 options(Insulation, Air sealing, etc, specific to this particular audit), each with individual prices, for different categories of work. This was NOT a hard sell at all. In fact, completely the opposite. It was clear that I could take care of some or all of the tasks myself, subcontract it myself, or use them as a service provider for some or all of the recommended categories. Shortly after the results presentation, we had some family issues, then the holidays, then some medical items, and before you know it it was early February, and this was the first time that we were contacted (by Brandon, again) regarding if there was any items from the list of that they could service for us from the audit. It was shortly after that contact that we were in a position to proceed, and we did. We chose the first three options from the last page of the results document to be performed. We chose the days that worked for us for the work to proceed, and our work was scheduled for three days. I could not be home the first two, but my wife was. When I arrived home after the first day, I could not even tell they were there (except for some vacuum cleaner marks). Both my wife and I were impressed with how polite and professional they were. They worked very cleanly, independently, and with focus. The entire process was completed within the time scheduled, and without any debris for us to dispose of or additional cleaning required. While the results will really be apparent in the future, we already notice improvement in the Master Bedroom temperature and we are confident that the other work performed will also provide benefit. We could be more pleased and satisfied, and we highly recommend them both for an assessment and remediation.
Description of Work: We bought our Charlotte home about 2 years ago. Since then we noticed that in the winter, there was a strong draft coming out at the bottom of the gas fireplace area. I mean socks-wearing cold on the loveseat a few feet away. The first floor Master BR was colder in the winter/warmer in the summer and one specific wall interior wall in there was VERY cold in the winter. We also noticed that there was a significant draft coming out between the kitchen cabinets, particularly in the corner. We had a very high gas bill the very first winter, so this is why we looked into an energy audit.

This included: visual inspection of the home including attic, crawl space and living areas Infrared imaging of the home identifying specific areas of thermal leakage Air penetration test, where he installed an exhaust blower on the front door to determine where air was entering the home Air quality assessment Mitchell came out for an inital visit to determine what we wanted, then came later to do the assessment. He then left us with an air monitoring device which we placed in different areas of the home to monitor air quality. We did this over several days. PROS: The review seemed very complete and touched on all the major areas including insulation, sealing holes, HVAC ducting, appliances (including water heater) The reviewer identified several opportunities for improvement with some sense of level of importance. The reviewer also identified a potential moisture issue in our crawlspace that needed to be fixed. CONS: Although the presentation was good and thorough, I felt like it was all a pretense to sell me their own services. Included in the audit report was a set of estimates for doing the work to remediate the issues they identified. Included in this were options to completely seal the crawlspace. The total estimate for work was over $12,000. After doing further research on Angies list, we were able to find much more reasonable estimates for the tasks we felt were most critical. The recommendations did not include spray-foam insulation to the roof deck and crawlspace, which would have solved both the air penetration and insulation issues. My personal subsequent research found that this was a quite viable and cost effective option to achieve similar results. The Air Quality monitor created an electronic report which EnergyTight sent to me. The first page of the report was a warning that the monitoring device was mis-calibrated and needed to be fixed. This didn't give me much confidence in that aspect of the review. The reviewer did identify potential moisture issues, but I really felt like he exaggerated the severity of the problem. Subsequent review by other contractors suggested that the mold that was found was typical of houses this age, and that the moisture in the crawlspace was acceptable. Although this review seems quite negative, I actually felt like this was a positive experience. Since the cost was only $200.00 via the Angies List big deal, I felt like it was a good deal and I am glad to have done it. Regarding cost: I think the cost of THIS energy analysis was quite reasonable. I felt like the estimates for other work were on the high-side which is why we did not contract with them to do other work.
